Video of the Week - Bike with Square Tires…That Works!   Endurance News:   WORLD CHAMPIONS, BRAVE DISPLAYS AND RECORD BREAKING CROWDS: 5 THINGS WE LEARNED FROM ARENA GAMES TRIATHLON LONDON   Last week mentioned – American golden couple Chase McQueen and Gina Sereno to complete in the Arena Games Triathlon in London.   It was a fast, frenetic and entirely unpredictable conclusion to the 2023 Arena Games Triathlon powered by Zwift World Championship Series.   From stellar performances to shocks and twists and turns, the race at the sold out London Aquatics Centre had it all.   Here we take a look at five things we learned from the final of Arena Games Triathlon.   LINN ON TOP OF THE WORLD Sophie Linn sparkled in the opening event in Montreal but ultimately faded just a little to finish behind Gina Sereno. However, a fire had clearly been lit as she realised this format could be one to really suit her.   The Australian initially wasn't going to come to London, such was her lack of confidence to secure a World Championship title, but after giving it some thought she committed – and then some.   Arena Games Triathlon, Grand Final, London, Uk, 2023, Linn put in a significant training block to give herself the best chance of success, and really delivered on the day. She was not only to eventually take the world title, but made a race that could have been dominated by Beth Potter and Cassandre Beaugrand ultra competitive.   Linn may not have started the Series as any kind of favourite, but is now an official World Champion.   HENRI'S COMEBACK COMPLETE Arena Games Triathlon has really been Henri Schoeman's redemption story.   Three years of injury and illness have dogged a man so used to success at the very highest level of the sport. His road to recovery has been bumpy, and hugely emotional. There was a time he thought he may never get the chance to race again.   Arena Games Triathlon, London, Uk, 2023 But Schoeman stuck in there, even during the dark moments, and has got his reward.   He really went the hard years for it too, racing all three events even when mathematically he didn't need to.   But this was always about more than racing, it was about proving to himself he can have a second coming in the sport. And how he did that.   BETH IS A BOSS Beth Potter may not have raced enough Arena Games events this year to be able to defend her title, but she showed her class in smashing the London event, and in front of a baying British crowd.   Potter has achieved so much in Arena Games racing, but she had never actually beaten Cassandre Beaugrand when the pair have raced together. She put that right in emphatic style with a convincing victory.   GUSTAV'S CHAMPION MENTALITY They say a champion never quits. Gustav Iden proved why he already has some of the biggest titles in the sport in his collection by proving what it takes to be the best.   The weekend presented him with so many challenges, A delayed flight and a missed briefing saw him start his heat – the so-called ‘Heat of Death' – with a five second penalty before he had even stepped on the race course.   He pushed hard but ultimately was in the repechage. He was – in Arena Games terms – a mile back coming out of the swim in Stage 2 and his exit before even making the finals looked all but assured.   However, he dug in, pushed himself to the absolute limit and was ready as soon as there was a sign of weakness to pounce.   After such efforts to get to the final there was a suspicion he could come last, but that was proved to be nonsense as she actually got himself to fifth by the end of the final. A remarkable performance, that displayed a quite remarkable mentality.   ELECTRIC ATMOSPHERE The London Aquatics Centre and the British crowd ensured an incredible day for triathlon. The venue was sold out, with a record 2,000 fans in attendance. The atmosphere was loud and happy, and the athlete thrived on it.   Fans turned up to support Para Triathlon as well and were treated to some stunning performances, including a virtuoso display from Grace Norman.   The venue is fast establishing itself as the pinnacle of Arena Games, but with more fans than ever packing in for the events across the Series, it is clear that triathlon is growing.   https://www.dcrainmaker.com/2020/08/super-league-triathlon-arena-games-behind-scenes-triathlon.html     IRONMAN Brings New Voices to Call in Finishers TAMPA, Fla. (April 13, 2023) – The list of voices calling athletes across IRONMAN® and IRONMAN® 70.3® finish lines will be expanding in 2023 to include some familiar voices as well as new ones. As the IRONMAN community bids farewell to Mike Reilly, the most famous voice in the sport of triathlon who has retired following a storied career spanning 33 years, athletes can expect to hear a variety of different voices greeting them at IRONMAN and IRONMAN 70.3 events over the coming year.   In addition, more women announcers will be picking up a microphone at IRONMAN and IRONMAN 70.3 events in 2023, including for the first time ever, a fully female announcing crew calling athletes in at the 2023 IRONMAN Maryland triathlon, part of the VinFast IRONMAN North America Series on Sept. 16, 2023.   “There's nothing quite like those final moments before an athlete crosses an IRONMAN finish line,” said Shane Facteau, Chief Operating Officer for The IRONMAN Group. “Our athletes work for months, and sometimes even years, to hear the illustrious words, ‘You are an IRONMAN!' made famous by our beloved Mike Reilly. While we will all miss Mike, we are proud to bring a diverse cast of emcees to our events in 2023 and we know our athletes are keen to meet these announcers as they help enhance their race day experience.”   Mike Reilly also shared his appreciation for the craft and the impact this crop of race announcers can have as they encourage athletes at events. “For over 30 years, it has been an incredible honor to support IRONMAN athletes as they cross finish lines worldwide,” said Reilly who is also in the IRONMAN Hall of Fame for his contributions to the sport. “I have no doubt that the dynamic and diverse team of announcers assembled will continue to uphold the legacy of IRONMAN and create unforgettable experiences for competitors and spectators. When you hear those powerful and life changing words, ‘You are an IRONMAN' at your next finish line, know that they are delivered with passion and a deep commitment to your success.”   Below are many of the iconic voices and new announcers that athletes can expect to see and hear at IRONMAN and IRONMAN 70.3 events this year.    Americas Jill Blankenburg –  Jill is now a seven-time IRONMAN finisher, beginning in 2009 when she completed IRONMAN Florida and since then has gone on to cross IRONMAN finish lines in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho; Lake Placid, N.Y.; Whistler B.C. Canada; Louisville, Kentucky; Cozumel, Mexico and Panama City Beach, Florida for a second time in 2019.  Jill is no stranger to the microphone – she's been a radio DJ, recorded lead and backing vocals for various music projects and fronted a rock and roll band for many years. Jill was delighted for the opportunity to combine her experience on the mic and her passion for triathlon when she began announcing multisport races in 2016 – and she's often called upon to sing the National Anthem at her events. Jill joined IRONMAN's announcing team in 2022 is proud to be one of the new female voices on the IRONMAN stage.   Otton Bernardelli –  In 2011, during a 10k race, the announcer failed to show up, and Otton had to step up to the microphone to lead 5,000 athletes in the event. This experience made him realize that he wanted to pursue a career in sports announcing. Four years later, in 2015, he received his first opportunity to announce an IRONMAN 70.3 event. Since then, he has worked alongside Dave Ragsdale and Tony Lugo at IRONMAN 70.3 Miami in 2017, and proudly shared the microphone with William Bonder at all IRONMAN 70.3 and full-distance IRONMAN events in Brazil for the past 7 years.   William Bonder – Javier Clavelo  Nick Edwards  Carissa Galloway . She has also been one of the most recent additions to the world championship announcing team and will help call athletes in at the women's IRONMAN World Championship in Kailua-Kona, Hawai`i.   Eric Gilsenan – Many have heard Eric at IRONMAN Village expos during past world championship events, and he will expand his role at the VinFast IRONMAN and IRONMAN 70.3 World Championship events in 2023.   Erick González Velázquez – Originally from Mexico City, Erick has been the voice of IRONMAN in Mexico. Two of his passions outside of being an announcer are playing the guitar and heading out every morning for a run with his Husky, Cookie.  Dave Kappas   Rachel Kazez Andrea Kooiman Dave Latourete Tony Lugo   Sara McLarty – Sara McLarty has been racing triathlons since she was a child. She enjoyed a successful 15-year professional career representing the United States at 13 world championships in seven different sports and raced on every continent with the exception of Antarctica. After retiring in 2015, she transitioned into coaching and athlete support with the USA Triathlon elite squad, culminating with a trip to the Tokyo Olympics 2020. Today, her passion is with the SLAP Tri Team #SLAPPERS in Central Florida helping adult, youth and junior high-performance athletes achieve their goals and dreams!   Dave Ragsdale – Dave has been around the Endurance Industry long enough to remember grabbing a popsicle stick at the finish line of a college cross country meet. After a stint in corporate sales in New York City, he moved to South Florida with a buddy so that they could train year-round for the then emerging sport of triathlon. Since then, he's been in the Event Management business, sold media for Florida Sports Magazine, a precursor to Competitor Magazine and Rock ‘n Roll Running Series and headed up a 6-person sales team with The IRONMAN Group. Currently, Dave helps connect brands and events in the active lifestyle space. Dave's time on the microphone dates back to his earliest days in the event management business, when he realized that holding a microphone and talking for hours was a lot easier than moving cones or barricades. Thankfully, he had the skill needed to succeed in that spot and in his more than 20 years as an announcer, he figures to have greeted close to 500,000 athletes to the line. Born in Minneapolis, Dave grew up in Pleasantville, NY was educated at Colgate University. He and his wife, Molly, live in Juno Beach, Florida.   Colleen Rue Tom Ziebart     Mental Mastery With Mark Allen Week 7: Swim Speed Reset Six-time Ironman World Champion shares what he calls the "ultimate race-prep drill" to find a new physical and mental gear in the swim. APRIL 10, 2023 MARK ALLEN   As a triathlete, you likely do a ton of steady-state swimming, and not a lot of top-end swimming. That's good for building endurance, but as you head into race season, it's good to reset your body's gauge of what it can do at a fast speed – physically and mentally. That's why this week's installment of our nine-week Mental Mastery series will take you to the pool for a fast and furious workout.   Going fast presents perhaps the biggest challenge to keeping your three pillars of Mental Mastery dialed in and active. Hard efforts can be uncomfortable, and physical discomfort can be a distraction to staying locked into a champion's Mental Mastery focus. This swim workout will blend physical and mental skills to ensure you get the hang of this demanding aspect of athletics.   These types of sets were extremely important for me to do from time to time even when I was getting ready for an Ironman. The intensity of short and fast is like a concentrated form of what takes place over a much longer period of time in a race.   This type of set also reinforced my ability to do the ultimate athletic race prep multitask, which was to go fast but to also stay focused on economy of motion, on keeping my mental chatter to as close to zero as possible, and to resetting my fast gauge.   Sometimes, just thinking about a hard workout can be a mental roadblock. I would always have to rein in my anxiety and the anticipation of how the set would feel, and just launch into doing it. Remember: It's always so much easier to deal with it while doing the set, than it is to let your mind spiral about what-ifs. The what-ifs in your head are almost always worse than how it actually turns out in real life.   Before we get to the workout and the Mental Mastery drills, let me remind you again what the three pillars of mental mastery are:   Body Awareness- This is developing the ability to be aware of how your body is moving, especially when you are fatiguing or going at a very fast pace or high-power output.   Internal Dialogue- This is being aware of when chatter is getting in the way of performance and developing the ability to change the channel quickly to a space that supports your physical efforts rather than weakening them. Mental Race Prep- This is remembering what the day-to-day work is going toward and using that vision to propel you to your personal best in your pursuit of the extraordinary.     What's New in the 303: How do you know when it's time to replace your helmet? 303 Endurance | How do you know when it's time to replace your helmet?   By: A.V. Schmit   Well, there is one obvious reason why you should replace your helmet — A crash. No matter the severity, a crash indicates a mandatory helmet replacement. It makes sense, when you consider all bike helmets are single-use pieces of safety equipment.   A compressed foam impact-absorption area can often be invisible from the outside. Photo: Bicycle Helmet Safety Institute.   They are not designed, nor intended to absorb the energy from multiple impacts. Even in what appears to be a minor impact, the integrity of the internal structures within the helmet may be compromised and be unable to perform when called upon in a supplemental impact.   But there is good news, well, kind of. Many helmet manufacturers offer a discount to replace a crash-damaged helmet. Giro offers a 30% discount as a crash-replacement incentive. To access the discount, you can call their 1-800 number or use an online form on their website.   Other circumstances, like accidentally leaving your helmet in an excessively hot car or truck, cause not so obvious reasons to replace your helmet. Extremely high temperatures, such as those experienced in the southern United States in the summer months, can create temperatures that can damage the impact absorbing foam that make up many modern road and mountain bike helmets.   “Excessive heat can damage your helmet. For example, in direct sunlight a dark gear bag, the interior of a car, or an automobile trunk can get hot enough to cause heat damage (damaged helmets will appear to have uneven or bubbly surfaces).”   Bell Helmets FAQ   Excessive heat, exposure to caustic chemicals, and impacts both on and off the bike, are all circumstances that can necessitate replacing your bike helmet.   So, you have not crashed your helmet or let it cook in a hot car, how do you know if you should replace it?   “We encourage riders to replace their helmet at least every 3 to 5 years,” said Tara L. Giro Consumer Services Representative. “At Giro, our focus is safety. With the advances in safety technology, we feel that is an appropriate range for the usable life of a helmet, barring a crash.”   UV, Ultra Violet, light can degrade a helmet's polycarbonate shell, but this takes an extended period of time out in the sunlight to occur. Most helmet shells incorporate a chemical UV inhibitor in the material that resists UV damage. Even with that, an extended period of time in the sun or high-altitude exposures can damage the shell of the helmet, as evidenced by fading color or cracks in the shell.   If you observe either of these situations, it's time to replace your helmet.   So that should give you some general guidelines as to what can damage your helmet, and when it makes sense to replace it. If you are unsure about the condition of your helmet, most manufacturers have a 1-800 number listed on their website where you can seek additional advice.   And… when you do get a new helmet, mark the month and year on the interior with a permanent marker somewhere so you know when you put it into service.     Video of the Week: Insane Square Cycling     Closing: Thanks again for listening in this week.  Please be sure to follow us @303endurance and of course go to iTunes and give us a rating and a comment.  We'd really appreciate it! Stay tuned, train informed, and enjoy the endurance journey!

Thank you for tuning into "Starting Small", a podcast about brand development, entrepreneurship, and innovation in the modern world. In this episode, I am joined by Jeremy Howlett, co-founder of Altra Running, one of the top manufactures of road and trail running shoes. Jeremy grew up in Utah, where he was nurtured with an entrepreneurship mindset for discovery and marketing. As contrary as it may sound, Jeremy was not a runner, nor into running growing up. His aunt and uncle owned a running shoe store, where his cousin began to modify customers existing shoes, to fit their stride needs. Realizing the demand for this modification and no existence in the current market, Jeremy proposed to create and sell these shoes from scratch... enter Altra. Altra was launched in 2009, partnering with Pulse Labs, an engineering firm at Brigham Young University, and with contract manufacturers in Asia. They were able to create this shoe that enabled runners to correctly form their stride, with the right heel angle. Jeremy and the team quickly found massive success, winning awards in Runners World Magazine, Competitor Magazine, Men's Journal, and more. The company has grew at a major annual revenue growth rate, and has been fully acquired by VF Corporation in 2018. I was really looking forward to my long run that day.  It was just a plane Jane 3-hour and 15 minute surge run that would get me 21-22 miles.  Nothing complicated.  And I woke up with a fever headache.  After a few seconds of indecision, (you know me), I said ‘you'll hate yourself if you don't go try'.  I met my buddy Tim who was only doing 2 hours and we got out.  I could tell I was hurting so I called it at 2 hours.  Got a solid 13miles in.  Went home.  Took a shower and laid in bed the rest of the day.  I was concerned because I had a busy week with a 2-day road trip.  I figured I'd be out on the road, sick in airplane - you get the visual.  It turned out better than I thought.  Coach had me scheduled for a recovery week anyhow.  There weren't any monster workouts to add to being sick and traveling.  I was able to drug myself up and made the travel and meetings look easy.  And, most importantly it didn't turn into something awful.  You always run into some blips in your training cycle.  My training cycle has been going so well that I was due.  A couple more big weeks would be good for my confidence, but for the most part ‘the hay is in the barn'.   Today I called up our old friend Dave McGilvary, head of DMSE sports and race director for the Boston Marathon.  I had a simple question to pick his brain about.  “What does it take to run across the country?”  We also chat a little about that other race… Section one – the hay is in the barn… What to do when you have late-cycle training issues. Section two – continuing homilies on being … Speaking of the Boston Marathon, they released the bib number assignments.  If you want to track me I'm 18,543.  Think about that.  As hard as I train, with my finishing time around a 3:30 I'm nowhere near the mid-pack of this race.  There's 30,000 runners in the race but only around 25,000 are qualified.  That means close to ¾ of the pack is in front of me.  You'd have to run my old Boston PR of 3:06 just to make it into the first wave.  When they changed the standards by 10 minutes people wondered if the runners could keep up.  There's your answer.  They certainly can.  The entire curve just shifted by 10 minutes and the race is still over-subscribed.  Amazing.  This will be my 21st running of the race and I pulled out all the stops for this one.  I think I'm going to have a good race.  Regardless of what happens it is and has been an honor to be part of this thing, this slice of local history.  On April 15th this year, Patriot's Day in Boston, my buddies and I have done the work and earned the right to play – and play we will! On with the show. … I'll remind you that the RunRunLive podcast is ad free and listener supported.  What does that mean? It means you don't have to listen to me trying to sound sincere about Stamps.com or Audible.. From his extraordinary 1978 run across the U.S. to benefit the Jimmy Fund and Dana-Farber Cancer Institute to serving as technical director then race director of the BAA Boston Marathon since the 1980s, McGillivray has helped organize more than 900 mass participatory events since founding DMSE Sports in 1981, while raising millions for worthy causes close to his heart. Here are a few of his many career highlights: In 1978 and over the course of 80 consecutive days, McGillivray ran across the U.S. from Medford, Oregon, to his hometown of Medford, Massachusetts, covering a total distance of 3,452 miles. He finished to a standing ovation of 32,000 fans in Fenway Park, home of the Boston Red Sox. His effort raised thousands of dollars for the Jimmy Fund, a charity that supports research toward eliminating cancer in children. The 1980 East Coast Run to benefit the Jimmy Fund consisted of 1,520 miles from Winter Haven, Florida, to Boston, Massachusetts. McGillivray was joined by Bob Hall, one of the pioneers of wheelchair marathoning, and raised thousands of dollars for the Jimmy Fund. He also met with then-President Jimmy Carter at the White House during the trek through Washington, D.C. In 1980, McGillivray competed in the Hawaii Ironman Triathlon, the premier individual endurance event in the world. He finished 14th overall and was only the 30th person to have ever competed in an Ironman. The Ironman consists of three back-to-back distance events: a 2.4 mile rough, open ocean water swim, followed by a 112-mile bike race, and finally finishing up with a 26.2-mile marathon run. He completed the event again in 1983-1989 and 2014, for a total of nine times. The Wrentham State School 24-Hour Run was designated as the "Run for Our Dreams Marathon." In 1980, this run traversed 120 miles in 24 hours throughout 31 cities within southeastern Massachusetts, ending in Foxboro Stadium during half-time of a New England Patriots football game. Held to benefit the Wrentham State School for the Mentally Retarded, this particular run raised more than $10,000 for the handicapped. 1981 brought an invitation to participate in the Empire State Building Run-Up. The course consists of 86 stories, 1,575 steps, 1050 feet in elevation, 40" stair height. Finished 10th place overall in a time of 13 minutes, 27 seconds. His 1981 New England Run was a triathlon (running, cycling, and swimming) of 1,522 miles throughout the six New England states. He raised $55,000 for the Jimmy Fund. Unusual segments included running up and down Mount Washington and swimming two miles across Lake Winneapesaukee, both in New Hampshire. In addition, highlights included swimming one mile from Woods Hole toward Martha's Vineyard, Massachusetts and running three miles with inmates inside Walpole State Prison. Officially completed his New England Run by swimming more than seven miles from Martha's Vineyard to Falmouth, Massachusetts, again raising more money for the Jimmy Fund. McGillivray was greeted by thousands on shore including some of the world's greatest runners, including Alberto Salazar. In 1982, McGillivray ran the Boston Marathon in 3:14 while blindfolded and escorted by two guides to raise more than $10,000 for the Carroll Center for the Blind in Newton, Massachusetts.. He traded his running shoes for swimming shorts in 1983 for the Jimmy Fund 24-Hour Swim. He swam for 24 consecutive hours in the Olympic-size Medford High School pool, swimming a total of 1,884 lengths and covering 26.2 miles (distance of Boston Marathon), again raising funds for the Jimmy Fund. Over the course of 14 days in 1983, he bicycled more than 1,000 miles throughout six New England states to raise money for a scholarship fund for McGillivray's alma mater, Merrimack College. In 1986, he formed the first sanctioned running club inside a maximum security institution at Walpole State Prison. He also conducted and ran in numerous distance races inside the prison yard, including completing and winning a full 26.2 mile marathon against inmates. Also in 1986, he biked for 24 consecutive hours around a five-mile loop course in Medford while simultaneously directing the annual Bay State Triathlon, which was being held on the same course at the same time. He covered a total of 385 miles, again raising money for the Jimmy Fund. Since 1988, he has been the Technical and Race Director of the Boston Marathon. He manages and oversees all technical and operational aspects of the oldest and most prestigious marathon in the world. McGillivray's many endurance events for charity are legendary, including running 120 miles in 24 hours thru 31 Massachusetts cities; an 86-story, 1,575-step run up Empire State Building in 13 minutes and 27 seconds; and running, cycling and swimming 1,522 miles thru six New England states while raising $55,000 for the Jimmy Fund. In 2000, he was chosen as Race Director of the Year by Road Race Management/Running Times Magazine. That same year, he received the Lifetime Achievement Award by Competitor Magazine for more than 30 years of service to the sport of road racing and triathlons. In 2003, McGillivray created the DMSE Children's Fitness Foundation to support non-profit organizations that use running to promote physical fitness in children and help solve the epidemic of childhood obesity. In 2004, McGillivray and a team of veteran marathon runners journeyed across the country following the same path he took in 1978. Trek USA raised more than $300,000 for five charities benefiting children. The race director of the Boston Marathon as well as an accomplished runner, McGillivray has run the marathon each year since 1973. For 16 years he ran it with all the other runners and since he began working with the race in 1988 he has run the course afterwards. His 2006 book, The Last Pick, which he co-wrote with Linda Glass Fechter, chronicles his childhood and career as the last pick for team sports because of his small stature, motivating readers to never underestimate their own ability to set and achieve goals. Order here on Amazon. In 2009 he was awarded the prestigious “Jimmy Award” from the Jimmy Fund of Boston for his 30-year association and his work with helping to raise money to fund cancer research at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. A skilled motivational speaker, McGillivray has displayed his signature ability to engage and inspire listeners to more than 1,600 audiences from corporate executives to high school students. McGillivray has received numerous awards –  valedictorian at both his high school and college, 2005 Running USA Hall of Champions, 2007 Runner's World Heroes of Running Award, the 2010 Fleet Feet Lifetime Commitment to Running Award, 2010 Ron Burton Community Service Award, the 2011 Massachusetts General Hospital Cancer Center's 2011 100 list, inducted into the USA Triathlon Hall of Fame in 2011 and also received the prestigious "Jimmy Award" by the Jimmy Fund and Dana-Farber Cancer Institute for 30 years of contributing time and expertise to help raise millions for cancer research and treatment. In 2015, he received the MarathonFoto/Road Race Management Lifetime Achievement Award, and was named One of the 50 Most Influential People in Running by Runner's World - tied for 6th place. In 2017 he was inducted into the Road Runners Club of America Long Distance Running Hall of Fame, joined by Ryan Hall, Desiree Linden, and George Hirsch. In 2018, he completed the World Marathon Challenge: seven marathons on seven continents in seven days. McGillivray has logged more than 150,000 miles, most for charity, raising millions for worthy causes.  He's completed 155 marathons, which include 46 consecutive Boston Marathons (with 31 run at night after his race director duties are fulfilled). In 2018 he published his first children's book, Dream Big: A True Story of Courage and Determination, co-authored with Nancy Feehrer. The illustrated book is based on his 2006 autobiography, The Last Pick. Dream Big may be ordered here on Amazon. His personal bests? Marathon: 2:29:58 and for the Ironman: 10:36:42. Each year he runs his birthday age in miles, starting when he was 12, and has not missed one yet. He was born on August 22, 1954 – you can do the math. McGillivray, DMSE Sports and his DMSE Children's Foundation have raised more than $50 million for various charities, including: The Jimmy Fund, Carroll Center for the Blind, Cystic Fibrosis, Lazarus House, Massachusetts Dietetic Association, Massachusetts Special Olympics, Moth- ers Against Drunk Drivers (MADD), Muscular Dystrophy Association, Sports Museum of New England, Wrentham State School.   Section two – Future, Past and Now - Outro Well, my friends you probably have not run 3000+ miles across the country to the end of the RunRunLive Podcast episode 4-406, but maybe you will some day.   One thing I would encourage you to do is to look at Dave's resume.  He has accomplished so much in his life.  But, that's not what's special about Dave. What's special is that most of his accomplishments are focused on helping others, he lives his life in service to the greater good.  And even with all he's done he's extremely approachable and humble. A good role model for us.    I've had a great couple weeks since we last spoke.  I did get that quick fever/flu/cold whatever it was but I got through it in a week.  I had a bit of a anxiety spot when I bailed on that long run.  As you may remember I did most of my long runs on the treadmill in February and early March.  I was hitting my paces but in the back of my mind I was always cognizant of the fact that the treadmill is not the road.  Until I road tested some of those paces I was going to be tentative.  Last week was a rest week but coach gave me a nice long tempo run for Saturday.  And of course, the weather didn't cooperate.  We had 20 MPH gusting, swirling winds and I was almost ready to drive into work and knock it out on the treadmill again, especially coming off that cold.  But, I stuck my head outside and it wasn't too bad so I suited up and hit the workout.  The workout was to warm up for 20 minutes then run 50 minutes at faster than race pace. The out and back I run these on starts out as a rolling downhill.  This means that when you make the turn-around, the second half of the run is a rolling uphill.  Which, in theory is a great workout, but in practice sucks as you climb those hills at the end of the tempo session.  It turned out that the wind was a tail wind on the way out and a head wind on the way back.  I don't really look at real-time splits as I'm doing these workouts.  I try to run them by feel.  When I hit that tempo I try to ease into what I think feels like, in this case a 7:50 mile.  I get feedback on my pace every mile.  I was a bit horrified when the first mile split was a 7:30.  Too fast.  I tried to ease off a bit and the second split came in at 7:30 again.  Going into the turn around I really tried to ease up and managed a 7:45. The challenge here is now I was turning back into the wind and up the hill.  In previous training cycles this is where my legs would have gone on me.  But I was able to hold the pace at a 7:39 a 7:49 and a 7:58 up the hill into a stiff headwind without my legs failing at all.  And when I made the turn to be running with the wind for the last half mile I averaged a 7:25. A number of positives.  I was able to go out too fast and recover without failing.  I was able to do the hard work up hill and into the wind and my legs felt great.  I was able to close it hard.  All good signs.  And I followed up this week on Tuesday with a similar step up run, on the same route without the wind, with 30 minutes at 7:50's and closing with 30 minutes at 7:30's.  Last night I knocked out a set of 200-meter hill repeats at sub-7 pace and it felt easy.  How is this possible?  Am I just lucky or gifted to be able to pull this kind of speed out of my butt at the ripe old age of 56 going on 57?  No, I mean, yeah of course there is some underlying DNA involved, but this is the result of 20 years of consistent effort over the long run and 6 months of focused effort on this cycle. What have I done differently this cycle to get such great results?  Near as I can figure it comes down to the following: Consistency – I do the work with consistent focus and effort over time. This isn't different from previous cycles, but it's the baseline.  Nutrition – I have dropped close to 20 pounds over the last 6 months. I usually shed 10 pounds in a marathon cycle. The last few cycles I haven't really focused on going the extra 10 pounds.  The combination of less weight and cleaner eating early in the cycle allowed me to have higher quality training and faster paces. Stretching and core – Another difference in this cycle is an early focus on daily flexibility stretches. This allowed me to train harder and probably kept the injuries at bay.  Finally – good sleep – I haven't been traveling as much and my commute isn't bad. I've been getting that full 8-9 hours of sleep every night and I'm sure that contributes to my ability to execute. Turns out the secrets to success are no secrets.  You just have to do it! Which is the hardest thing, right? It's easy to say these things, it's another to actually do them. But, if you do, I guarantee you'll see the results. Next time we talk will be the weekend before the Boston Marathon.  I've got one more long run and I'm into my taper.  Remember, my number is 18543, If you want to steal it you need to be able to run a sub-3:30 marathon.  Your etymology for the week is the word “compass”.  This is a combination of two Latin words.  ‘Com' meaning with and ‘passus', which means pace or steps.  So following your compass means bringing together your paces. And I'll see you out there.   MarathonBQ – How to Qualify for the Boston Marathon in 14 Weeks - Rachel -> Coach Jeff ->

I was really looking forward to my long run that day.  It was just a plane Jane 3-hour and 15 minute surge run that would get me 21-22 miles.  Nothing complicated.  And I woke up with a fever headache.  After a few seconds of indecision, (you know me), I said ‘you’ll hate yourself if you don’t go try’. I figured I’d be out on the road, sick in airplane - you get the visual.  It turned out better than I thought.  Coach had me scheduled for a recovery week anyhow.  There weren’t any monster workouts to add to being sick and traveling.  I was able to drug myself up and made the travel and meetings look easy.  And, most importantly it didn’t turn into something awful.  You always run into some blips in your training cycle.  My training cycle has been going so well that I was due.  A couple more big weeks would be good for my confidence, but for the most part ‘the hay is in the barn’. If you want to track me I’m 18,543.  Think about that.  As hard as I train, with my finishing time around a 3:30 I’m nowhere near the mid-pack of this race.  There’s 30,000 runners in the race but only around 25,000 are qualified.  That means close to ¾ of the pack is in front of me.  You’d have to run my old Boston PR of 3:06 just to make it into the first wave.  When they changed the standards by 10 minutes people wondered if the runners could keep up.  There’s your answer.  They certainly can.  The entire curve just shifted by 10 minutes and the race is still over-subscribed.  Amazing.  This will be my 21st running of the race and I pulled out all the stops for this one.  I think I’m going to have a good race.  Regardless of what happens it is and has been an honor to be part of this thing, this slice of local history.  On April 15th this year, Patriot’s Day in Boston, my buddies and I have done the work and earned the right to play – and play we will! The last few cycles I haven’t really focused on going the extra 10 pounds.  The combination of less weight and cleaner eating early in the cycle allowed me to have higher quality training and faster paces. Stretching and core – Another difference in this cycle is an early focus on daily flexibility stretches. This allowed me to train harder and probably kept the injuries at bay.  Finally – good sleep – I haven’t been traveling as much and my commute isn’t bad. I’ve been getting that full 8-9 hours of sleep every night and I’m sure that contributes to my ability to execute. Turns out the secrets to success are no secrets.  You just have to do it! Which is the hardest thing, right? It’s easy to say these things, it’s another to actually do them. But, if you do, I guarantee you’ll see the results. Next time we talk will be the weekend before the Boston Marathon.  I’ve got one more long run and I’m into my taper.  Remember, my number is 18543, If you want to steal it you need to be able to run a sub-3:30 marathon.  Your etymology for the week is the word “compass”.  This is a combination of two Latin words.  ‘Com’ meaning with and ‘passus’, which means pace or steps.  So following your compass means bringing together your paces. And I’ll see you out there.   MarathonBQ – How to Qualify for the Boston Marathon in 14 Weeks - Rachel -> Coach Jeff ->

Rasputitsa means Mud Season in Russian. It is also the name of a ridiculously fun and tough gravel bicycle race that happens during, you guessed it, mud season in the NEK of VT. Since its launch, the race has grown its participation by a huge amount and has donated thousands to charitable causes. It's been named “Best Cycling Event in the Northeast” by Competitor Magazine and listed in “7 Challenging, Fun Spring Classics to Ride” by Bicycling Magazine.I sat down with the founders Anthony Moccia and Heidi Myers to talk about how Rasputitsa came to be, what's in store for 2019 and what motivates them to continue building this epic event.Rasputitsa Website - https://www.rasputitsagravel.comInstagram - https://www.instagram.com/rasputitsagravel/ Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/RasputitsaGravel/

Many of the common running questions and mistakes that we have all made over time are covered today.  I expect it will serve as a great resource going forward for a variety of questions we all face as we progress as a runner.  Jason and I start off with how to learn the signals your body is sending you and how running on a track for hard workouts can really help you dial into what your correct race pace should be. We cover how your recovery and easy pace runs are often slower as training miles increase as your body needs more time to recover from the harder workouts and your body really needs time to recover from those harder efforts.  You want to be faster on race day, not necessarily faster on your easy days. Are you a beginner or seem to be getting injured a bit too often?  We cover the host of things that can cause the injuries and how you can modify your training to avoid them in the future.  Are you strengthening your body in the right way?  Are you ramping up your milage too fast, are you running too quickly? You will learn how periodized strength training can assist you in being a stronger runner with strong muscles and connective tissue needed to drive you across the ground.  The fastest runners are also often the strongest runners.    Jason and I cover the causes of cramping on longer efforts (especially the marathon).  Are you prepared for the distance and how to get that way.  Are you also prepared for the pace you are trying to run and how to adjust your pacing accordingly.  Should you be making up skipped workouts? Today’s Guest Jason Fitzgerald is a USATF running coach and offers online running, strength training, injury prevention and nutrition training with his company Strength Running.  He started the company in 2010 hoping to assist runners avoid the mistakes that sidelined him in his own running career.  He is also a best selling author of two books and numerous articles for Competitor Magazine, Daily Burn and Active.  He lives in Denver Colorado with his wife and family (of 3 kids under age 5). What you will learn about: He started Strength Running after almost quitting running from an IT band injury in 2008/2009.  He realized while recovering that if he wanted to keep doing what he loved, he needed to change the way he was training, and believed that he could help others do the very same thing.  The site trains those from beginners to those training for 100 mile races and more. How running on the track for your harder/race pace training can help you learn how to understand what race pace feels like while running, as well as mentally afterwards by reviewing the splits in the data.  After doing lots of runs on the track you will begin to learn exactly what your race pace feels like from an effort perspective.  It takes lots of trial and error but you learn each time you try. Your recovery runs should be Comfortable, Controlled, and Conversational.  Your easy pace runs would normally be slightly faster than those but still really comfortable and you should be able to sustain the effort.  Your easy pace can and should also change based on how you feel that day and what your earlier workouts were earlier in the week and how well you had recovered. How runner specific strength training and cross training can can aid you in injury prevention and recovery.  How important those things are to have a long running career vs a quick running career.  Strength training can be used for both injury prevention but also for making you stronger, more coordinated and able to push off the ground with more force.  To run fast you need to be strong and forceful. Cramping is more a sign of running longer or faster than you have prepared your body for rather than an electrolyte balance.  It is also impacted by whether you have paced yourself properly in the early stages of a race. How long term thinking can help you learn to rest, recover and get healthy rather than running through pain or issues.  How as a coach he has to spend more time keeping runners from running when they should be resting rather than having to push them to do more.  What you should consider doing if you miss workouts due to life issues.   Inspirational Quotes: It is important from a wholistic perspective to consider ourselves athletes that specialize in running rather than just runners. “The most important run is tomorrow’s run.  Don’t do anything today that will negatively impact your ability to run tomorrow.” - Tom Foreman Intensity Density:  if you make it so the density of your training impairs the intensity of your training, overall your training will suffer and/or you will risk injury.    I love runners, we are all sort of geeky and nerdy and special. Okay, well at least occasionally :) That’s what marathoner and writer Duncan Larkin argues in his book Run Simple: A Minimalist Approach to Fitness and Well-Being. Duncan, who also writes for Outside Magazine, Competitor Magazine, Runner's World, ESPN, and Running Times, believes the best way to maximize running’s mental and physical benefits is to get back to the basics. While the book is full of training regiments and advice for increasing quality over quantity, it starts off with one resounding message: ditch your gadgets. According to Duncan, runners have become slaves to their electronic devices, and, believe it or not, this reliance can be detrimental to both performance and the very value of a training program. In this interview, Duncan shares with us the principles of his simplistic training philosophy, a little about the coaches and runners who swear by it, as well as a sneak peek at his upcoming book, The 30-Minute Runner: Smart Training for Busy Beginners.

Doping has made us all skeptical. Every time we see a performance that stands out, one that seems too good to be true, we automatically assume it isn't. Years of drugs in the sport has led us to become critical and bitter. Mario and I discuss doping in sport, and the importance of brands taking a stand against it is critical to becoming a clean sport again. Mario and I also discuss every runner out there. How we struggle to maintain balance, feeling as though we are being more committed than everyone else, when in fact, we are reaching obsession with running, and that is when things start to go wrong, our running just keeps getting worse.  We talk about why it is important to have other things in your life, even if running does mean a lot to you. Mario is a very good coach, working with many of the best ultra marathoners in the country, who have won many national titles. He gives advice on when you should hire a coach (and no, he does not believe EVERYONE needs a coach), and what traits to look for in a coach that is best for you. We talk about trail and ultra races and what extra preparation they require (and why Mario knows this, despite never running more than 50k!). This is a fun episode from the eyes and ears of running. This podcast episode is for anyone who is generally interested in our sport, who loves running and cares for the future of it. Today's Guest Mario Fraoli Former editor of Competitor Magazine, Mario is a coach to many elite runners, and has become extremely popular through the honesty he shares in his Morning Shakeout newsletter, which goes out every Tuesday morning. What You Will Learn About What life is like working for one of the biggest running magazines in the world Mario's advice for runners who are very passionate and have big goals, but are not good enough to be sponsored The athletes Mario coaches and how they have been very successful, especially on the ultra scene...even though Mario has never run more than 50k Why you need to read his unpredictablly interesting morning shakeout newsletter Mario's thoughts on the doping situation and how it looks in the future Why Mario doesn't believe in the coffee taper   Inspirational Quotes Having balance in your life is super important. Being committed to it, but having other interests in your life other than running help balance you out, but also sustain you. That will give you something to focus on and pursue when your running career or your best running days are eventually over, because that comes for all of us. Giving yourself something to focus on down the road and developing an ability to roll with the punches. You will get a lot more downs than you will ups, at least initially, and realizing that is part of the process and being okay with it is important. I think its important wherever you are as a runner or whatever roll it plays in your life, to realize, at the end of the day, it is just running. It is not everything. I have coached people to 100 mile races with great success without having ever come close to doing it.  The primary driver (to finding a coach) is the relationship; finding someone you can connect with on a deeper level, who you can communicate regularly and effectively, who understands you as an athlete, and will take the time to better understand you as an athlete; what your inspirations are, your training background, what your goals are, and will put some serious thought into how to bridge those gaps. That has got to be at the heart of it all. Most runners need to be held back if they are driven and a coach can certainly help in that regard. Doping has been a problem in running for a long time, and thats unfortunate, because, not only does it damage the reputation of the sport, but it affects peoples lives, their careers, and their ability to make a career out of it. My view is definitely jaded. You don't know what to believe anymore, and that's whats unfortunate about the whole thing. He’s a barrier-breaking Nike-sponsored athlete, who you may have seen in Nike’s commercials during the 2016 Rio Olympics. He’s a three-time Ironman, and was named Best Personal Trainer in the Northeast by Competitor Magazine in 2014. Chris was the first transgender athlete to be featured in the ESPN Magazine Body Issue, and was named Person of the Year by Outsports. In 2015, he became the first openly transgender man to make a men’s U.S. National Team when he qualified for the sprint duathlon team. He was also a catalyst for change in the International Olympic Committee Policy on transgender athletes. He’s also the vice president of program development and community relations for You Can Play and is an online coach for Daily Burn. Even though I’ve known Chris for years and consider him a very close friend, I asked a lot of the questions I’ve always had about what it means to be transgender, and he was kind (and patient) enough to answer all of them. Chris was never uncomfortable, and reassured me, “You don’t know what you don’t know.” There’s so much good stuff in this episode, and I learned so much during my conversation with Chris. Throughout the episode, we talk about Chris’s transition, what it was like for his family and his wife, and how it affected his sports performance and racing goals. We also talk about his job, what it was like being in a Nike commercial, and what he wishes more people understood about being transgender. Welcome to Episode 27 of the Final Surge podcast where we kick off 2017 by talking to Coach Mario Fraioli. With the new year here we talk about goal setting, new year resolutions and setting yourself up to have the best year of running yet. We also dig into when a runner should get a coach and talk about his new coaching venture. Last week we talked to Olympian Nick Willis and I want to remind you about the contest we have going where you can enter through January 6th to win one of two boot camps with Nick at the Miler Method. Head over to Finalsurge.com/podcast and look for details under Nick’s podcast. Dozens of you reach out to use every week on Twitter @FinalSurge and we thank you for your interactions Follow us and ask us any questions about Final Surge or let us know what questions you would like us to ask future guest. Mario shares with us how he got started in running while in high school and his early basketball career. He also discussed how with the lack of structure in his high school program he had to use the Internet searching other runners training to get his start. Mario recently made a transition from Competitor Magazine to Ekiden, a new coaching service. He talks about why he made the transition. This episode will launch right after the first of the year. So most people are thinking about their goals for the year. Let’s talk about those a little. We ask Mario when he has a coaching client come to him about goals, what advice do you give them in setting goals? Mario does not like the word goals and he explains why. Someone on Twitter recently asked, how do I go about figuring out which event I am best suited for and should focus on? Mario talks about how he recommends experimenting. We talked some about online calculators and how to use them to see what you need to work on. We talked about goals, and if someone has a goal how much is it about just training vs all the other things like diet and sleep? We also discussed setting long term vs short term goals. Mario talks about making a daily check list that you can do daily to help you reach your goals you set. Mario discusses what he learned from Alberto Salazar and breaking the training for the year down into two parts. A couple of questions I got via Twitter and Direct message for you from listeners. I am a 38-year-old runner who has been running for 4 years. My current PR in the 5k is 18:03 and has been since January of 2016. I cannot seem to break the 18-minute mark. What can I do to make the next jump. … Now I did ask him some follow-up questions to get a little more information. Right now he runs 5 days a week, averages about 35 miles a week. His long run is 8-10 miles. A typical week he runs a 4-mile tempo run at 10k pace and does one day of repeats on the track that vary from 400 up to 1600. Sounds to me like he has plateaued, what advice do you have for Jim? Mario answers Jim with some good info including maybe how to get more power out of each stride. We also talk about some pacing for Jim and what he should be doing on recovery days and how Mario uses 1/2 marathon pace to determine that pace. 2nd question that came in: I have been running for just over a year now and want to run a half marathon. My problem is with my family and work schedule I do not have as much time to train. My local Crossfit gym I go to is telling me there is a cross fit endurance program that they claim is a better way to train because it allows me to train more intense but in a lot less volume. Have you seen this program and what are your thoughts? We talk about his new coaching company and why he started it. Coaching is not something for just elite athletes but really is for anyone at any point in your running career. I ask Mario when a runner should think about getting a coach and why a new golfer will get a golf coach or tennis player will get a tennis coach, but runners seem to think they need to be elite before they hire a coach. I first learned about Brian MacKenzie when I was training for my first Ironman’s and I read his books about endurance and mobility and he changed my concepts about what was possible with running. Basically, pounding out miles just doesn’t work as you get older (and when younger too). But this doesn’t apply to just running…… Brian applies exponential training approaches to optimize human performance; he relentlessly challenges conventions and tests assumptions. Recently I was reacquainted with Brian’s work when I started training with Wim Hof's cold and breathing methods and was looking to see who else was interested in them….. So I reached out to ask him on the show.  Major take – aways from this episode are: How you can change anything with 10 breaths. Using breathing techniques to amplify, deepen and quicken meditation benefits. The power of breath work to stabilize mood regulation and reactive behavior patterns. Co2 adaptation + Integrating breathing, ice and heat. How to activate the Vagus nerve. Importance of diaphramatic breathing. Using breathing to access Flow States. Proper breathing technique for sport, business and life. Mobility – the importance of keeping tissue supple. Eating principles vs fads to follow that Brian coaches people on related to a) Vegetables; b)humanely treated animal protein (not stressed); c) High quality fats. The impact of a) sugar; b) processed foods; c) hydration; d) high quality breads. Must read and listen to Netflix video by Mike Pollan, “Cooked” and In Defense of Food – An Eaters Manifesto. Taking personal responsibility of your health by engaging your doctor. Benefits of getting your genetics tested (Wellness fx). Dumbing down technology so that you can feel again. Mike Rowe on the importance of working opportunities not passion. I have linked up all the show notes on redzonetech.net/podcast where you can get access to Brian’s blog publications. Today’s show is with Dr. Kelly Starrett where he answers audience questions concerning how he optimizes human performance. Kelly is a coach, physical therapist, author, speaker, and creator of the blog Mobility WOD. Kelly’s work across these mediums has reached large audiences and revolutionized how athletes think about human movement and athletic performance.   In this episode, we discuss: -Allied relationships between physical therapists and strength and conditioning coaches -Do anatomical variations impact ideal posture and movement? -Why we should be taking a 30,000 foot view in our culture -How Kelly reconciles pain science and biomechanics in his physical therapy practice -How to build a large platform with the use of social media -And so much more!   Kelly advocates that every human should be incorporating a mobility regime into their day to day lives. He states, “What does it mean foundationally to be a human being, what are the things we should be able to do? We remain agnostic about the way you want to train, but you better have a movement practice or at least express full range of motion if you plan on moving fast, lifting heavy, going up and down stairs, or picking up your kid.”   Kelly stresses that enhancing movement is a continual process and every day is a movement screen. “We don't expect movement competence to happen overnight. This is a process but eventually we should all be moving better and better and better because that is what it means to acquire skills as a human. It takes 10,000 repetitions as a baby to integrate a movement pattern. That means we have some tolerance in the system to buffer some less than ideal biomechanics. Overtime we should be refining that.”   Kelly challenges the physical therapy profession to focus more attention on educating the public on preventative care. He stresses, “When you have a fever, you take some Tylenol. If you have a cold, you don’t go see your doctor. If you have a cut, we teach people basic first aid. [Physical therapists] are not doing a good job teaching basic first aid around the body to everyone.”   We also discuss Kelly’s widely successful online fitness platform and the best ways to target and gain influence in your own local community. He states, “People are looking for advocates, they are looking for help… if you set out to influence a bunch of people, you influence no one. It’s not authentic, it’s not real. Solve a set of problems and be of use to your community and people will find you.”   For more about Kelly: Kelly Starrett is a coach, physical therapist, author, speaker, and creator of [mobilitywod.com], which has revolutionized how athletes think about human movement and athletic performance.   His 2013 release, Becoming a Supple Leopard has become a New York Times and Wall Street Journal bestseller. Just call 1-877-209-9439 and leave a voicemail, leave a Skype voicemail to username "pacificfit", or e-mail Listener Brad asks: 24 to 72 hours after a hard full body Crossfit workout accompanying my muscle soreness and stiffness, the swollen feeling, will be a 2 to 6 pound weight gain. When the soreness subsides my weight returns back to normal.  What is the cause of this weight gain? Is it normal or healthy? Listener Michael asks: I was wondering why I don't see or hear about the serious/successful athletes using TI swimming.  Do you know why most seem to just do the standard freestyle stroke and steer away from TI?  Do most not know about it, or do they just feel freestyle is good enough. Andrewheeps asks via Twitter: hey ben, any tips for good recipes if cooking for just more than one? Listener Allison asks: I am a sports/deep tissue and myofascial release practitioner. I wanted to ask you two questions: 1) I have a client who is an insulin dependent type 1 Diabetic, training for her first marathon. She struggles with lots of superficial myofascial adhesions, despite using the foam roller religiously and having a session with me every 2-3 weeks. Do you have any suggestions on how to help her body? Would the amino acids you mention help her? Also, as far as fueling for training and races, she has a lot of trouble, and thinks that will be her make/break as to whether she is able to get through the training. She's done her 1/2, but it's uphill form here. 2) Since I have lots of running and cycling under my belt, I often think of trying a tri ;) However, each time I go to the pool to try and swim some laps, I suffer from vertigo/nausea. I have horrible motion sickness on dry land anyway, and often get sick on boats, long car rides, etc... Can you think of anything I can do to help? (Ginger doesn't work and it's impossible to work out on Dramamine/Scop patches) Listener Kai asks: Recently Consumer Reports published findings of high levels of lead and other metals in protein drinks and other supplements (including some green drinks). 1. What is your take on this / how significant is this risk from your perspective? 2. Are there any “certifications” we should look for on supplement labels that provide guidance as to the quality of the ingredients / lab testing? 3. What is your take on consumerlab.com? In my response, I talk about and (5% discount code BGF). DougLloyd asks via Twitter: Feel unmotivated to restart lifting & running prgrm. Trainer might help. What should I look for in a personal trainer? In my response to Doug, I mention my team of personal trainers at . Listener Gabe asks: I recently have had interest in the Bioletics tests and protocols that you talk about.  I have a limited budget, so I'd like to start with just the Vitamin D test.  Do you think the Vitamin D test is the best place to start with Bioletics? How do I download Podcast episode #53 and #62 (I think) or any other episodes with Dr. Cohen?  Your iTunes page only goes to Podcasts in the #70s, and I can't see how to download episodes from your website.  I use iTunes with my iPhone 4, if that matters. In my response to Gabe, I direct him to Listener Jason asks: I am a cyclist, and last week I was in a crash during a race, resulting in a broken collar bone. My doc says it will be about 4 to 6 weeks until this has healed. I'm wondering if my nutrition over the next several weeks can help or hinder bone healing. Are there certain foods or supplements I should be including in my diet (sufficient calcium for example)? What would you do for a broken bone? In my response to Jason, I direct him to , along with my book, "How To Recover Like Wolverine from X-Men", which you can get Listener Zach asks: I'm a 35-year-old former marathoner that has decided to become serious about bike road racing...I realize I need to drop some weight to realize my full potential.I have a theory that I need to gain some muscle in order to lean out, and then I can worry about cannibalizing some of that muscle when it comes time to get into racing shape. I want to be in good functional shape in general, dropping muscle weight only when necessary to race. Should I focus for the next several months on building muscle in order to have that muscle help to burn fat stores, along with reducing fat through a healthy diet, and once my body fat percentage approaches a more ideal level, then worry about reducing muscle mass for racing? I'm never going to be the next Eddy Merckx, but I'd like to do well, and eventually maybe upgrade to Cat 3 or even 2. How would you go about this? Listener Todd asks: I am a male 45 year ol d and 245lbs. I was wondering if 1500 calories a day is a good goal. I dont want it to be too little and slow down my metabolism to much? I do cardio at least 5 days a week, and if the machines are accurate I am averaging about 700 calories burned each day, as well as weight training three days a week. I believe that the mix of calories are what they should be. I just have a worry in the back of my mind that the calorie intake will put my body into starvation mode, especially with the huge calories that I used to consume daily. Listener Toni asks: Just a quick question for podcast....have you ever used Sportlegs if so what are your thoughts about it. Listener Brad asks: Several months ago I watched a Dr. Oz interview where he told Jimmy Kimmel that your maximum healthy waist size should be half your height. Is this true? I am 74 inches tall and my waist is 35 inches, measuring two fingers above the belly button. Is my waist size healthy in relation to my height? Listener Bernice asks: I am curious to know, what is more than likely to make you fatter.  Consuming excess fat or sugar/ carbs?  I always thought the best foods to avoid when trying to loose excess body fat, is to reduce your fat intake.  As the body would prefer to store fat over sugar/ carbs because it takes less calories to do so. In my response to Bernice, I mention my podcast: "". Listener Karen asks: I would love to hear your opinion about the C-Prime bracelet. I am seeing more and more of these and hearing so many claim that this bracelet has made the biggest difference in their running, biking, and swimming; even golf.  Sounds too good to be true. What is your opinion?   Listener Rich asks: I have seen advertisements for a bar called the pr bar in Competitor Magazine. I called and the Pres. of the company answered and told me how his nutrition program would get my body burning fat for energy. Your thoughts?  Have you heard of this bar?  I could not find any nutritional information about it. Listener Fernanda (from Ecuador) asks: I wanted to ask u if u could give some tips as to what to bring a picnic for maximum four people. just food that gives u energy to run all around the place. also im not sure bringing much fruit will help cause it is easiy digested and then we,ll be in the query for a near bathroom. and one last thing - another tip on activities like hit the ball ? please dont say hunting or fishing. Listener Brian asks: I will be doing Syracuse IM70.3 in Sept and have a question on long distance downhill running after a heavy uphill bike course. The Syracuse bike course contains alot of climbing some 2900 foot change in elevation. Then after what I'm sure will be a tough ride the run course is all downhill for 13 miles! Can you offer up any tips on form, position, or training for either the bike and the run that will allow the quads and gluts to survive this back to back test. Listener Tonya has a call in question about hiking at altitude and training hiking muscles. Do you have a question for Ben? Just call 1-877-209-9439 and leave a voicemail, leave a Skype voicemail to username "pacificfit", or e-mail -------------------------------------------- Remember, if you have any trouble listening, downloading, or transferring to your mp3 player just e-mail And don't forget to leave the podcast a ranking in iTunes - it only takes 2 minutes of your time and helps grow our healthy community!
