On today's episode of the Free Outside Show, we're joined by Grant Barnette—a thru-hiker turned Pro ultrarunner who has tackled some of the toughest races in the world. Grant has hiked the Appalachian Trail and Pacific Crest Trail, holds the DC Peaks 50 course record, placed 2nd at Grindstone 100, 5th at Speedgoat 50K, and was the third American at CCC at UTMB. Most recently, he signed a pro contract with Craft. Follow Grant online: https://www.instagram.com/runwithgrant/ We dive into how he transitioned from carrying a heavy pack on the PCT to discovering Angeles Crest 100 in middle of a thru-hike, his nomadic lifestyle living out of his truck while chasing FKTs, and his journey through ski mountaineering and backcountry adventures in Utah. He shares his take on training with a job, fueling strategies, sponsorships, and the challenges of race selection for the US Trail Team. Plus, we discuss the controversial selection process for the World Trail Running Championships, how social media and live-streaming influence race prestige, and what it's like lining up next to Jim Walmsley at UTMB. Takeaways Grant Barnett has a rich background in trail running and ultra events. The transition from through-hiking to competitive running can be inspired by encounters on the trail. Living in a truck and pursuing a passion for running can lead to unexpected opportunities. Ski mountaineering offers a unique training method for ultra running. The importance of mentorship in outdoor sports is highlighted through Grant's relationship with Joey Campanelli. Media coverage significantly influences race popularity and athlete opportunities. Qualifying races for championships may not always reflect true mountain running skills. The culture of ski resorts can mirror the lifestyle of through-hikers. Nutrition and hydration strategies change drastically in winter sports. Community support and shared experiences are vital in the outdoor sports world. Wasatch 100 is a historic race but lacks hype. Experiencing a DNF can be deeply embarrassing. Bouncing back from a DNF is crucial for growth. The bond between twin athletes can be unique and supportive. Modern running science is complex and ever-evolving. Finding what works for your body is essential in fueling. Crew support can significantly impact race performance. The emotional toll of racing can be challenging to navigate. The evolution of race formats keeps the sport dynamic. Shoes and gear have advanced significantly in recent years. John Maynard appears to be the perfect combination of ultra experience and positive mindset. On the running side, he figured out pretty early on that he was built for endurance, covering 18 miles in the 5th grade to win a season pass to Great America. And he has continued to develop that endurance to the point that he just toed the starting line of the Angeles Crest 100, which was his 3rd 100 mile event in the last 10 months. And we are just as excited to dive into mindset with this guy because he comes across as one of the most positive, encouraging individuals that we have connected with in the space. So stick around to hear how he got into ultra, the powerful rules that he lives by, and all the juicy, painful details of his recent ultra experiences. Enjoy the episode! You have a plan; you prepared relentlessly; and when you set out on your journey everything seems to be going just as planned; and then, when you least expect it; everything falls apart. How do you keep going when what you worked so hard for slips through your fingers? And how do you keep going when everything just plain hurts? In this episode Sally talks about her recent race at Angeles Crest 100 in Wrightwood, California; one of the toughest 100 mile races in the nation. Run entirely in altitude with big climbs, intense heat; and everything in between; these are the trails where Sally became a mountain runner over a decade ago. Sally breaks down the race; offers invaluable insight into tackling tough challenges; and how she kept going after her quads "blew out" with 30 miles/50km left to go. Sally also talks about the importance of this race as number two in the Choose Strong Project and hits hard on the topic of DNFs, Caring for your one body; and Never quitting. Joined by co-host and husband, Eddie McRae; this balanced episode of laughter, real-talk...and singing (yes Singing!) marks their 10th episode! Happy Double Digits Choose Strong Podcast! In this episode we wander around the surprisingly busy Genesee Valley Park with Charlie Granger. Charlie is heading to Western States this year! But he's been out west before this… Angeles Crest 100 was his first hundred miler. He's from the San Gabriel mountains, so you know, it just made sense. As for locally, you may have seen Charlie around Twisted Branch 100k, Many on the Genny or maybe most recently at Cayuga Trails 50k. This was a fun experiment of a podcast, Charlie and I participate in a quite eventful day at Genesee Valley park and chat about how his training is going, how he plans (or doesn't) for these big events and just some life things in general. And as you'll see, both of us have a bit of a fun time trying to remember, well… anything from the past. So feel free to shout into the air as you hear us stumble through a bunch of “thought exercises” Special Guest: Charlie Granger.
In this episode of She Runs Trails, I interview @melissarunstrails.
We sat down with Mireya and learned about her journey to running in the Western States 100 Endurance Run. She started running in high school but it was her experience of crewing for her husband when he ran, and won, the Angeles Crest 100 that inspired her to give the 100 mile distance a shot. In 2021 she earned a Golden Ticket to Western States via the Black Canyon 100k and set her sights on cracking the top ten on her run from Olympic Valley to Placer High school. She hopes that her experience will also inspire Latinas to learn about the sport of ultra running and bring more Latinos into the sport.
Mayra Lopez Garcia is a proud Mexican American, born and raised in South Los Angeles. She currently lives in Palmdale, CA. She works with the homeless families and individuals as a housing stabilizer. She started running in her junior year by joining the her high school cross-country team. As she started running, coming from a softball background, she slowly started to lose weight. As she started to see her body change running became an obsession, she wanted to run more and lose more weight. As a result she began to stop eating and developed the eating disorder, anorexia. She became very good at hiding her eating and exercise habits. Eventually Mayra's coach noticed her weight loss and encouraged her recovery. Mayra says, "I am thankful that I was able to get out from my eating disorder, but it still hunts me here and there today. I catch myself comparing myself to others. I want others to know that any person who runs has a “runner's body” no matter the weight, build, age, ability or health status. It took me some time, but I am thankful for my body per it has endured tough workouts, ran many races." Mayra has run distances from the 5k up to a 58 Mile race. She continues to run with F.A.C.T Team and her current coach. She qualified for and is training for Boston Marathon 2021 and the Rio De Lago 100 which are a month apart. For Mayra, running has brought many good people into her life including her fiancé, who proposed when he finished Angeles Crest 100 Miler in 2016. ****To follow Mayra visit her on Instagram @born2run87 (https://www.instagram.com/born2run87/) *** ****Host, Coach Pilar Arthur-Snead, https://linktr.ee/mindfulrunner **** Leave me a message at https://anchor.fm/pilar-arthur-snead/message*** ***Please Like and Subscribe to The Last Tenth Podcast on You Tube: https://bit.ly/37foa2f ***Listen to The Last Tenth Podcast on: Anchor.fm (https://anchor.fm/pilar-arthur-snead), Apple Podcasts (https://apple.co/3lXB5ek), Please be sure to leave your positive feedback and 5 star review on Apple Podcasts! Mayra Lopez Garcia is 33 years old, Mexican-American and was born in raise in South Los Angeles. She lives in Palmdale, CA, where her current occupation is a housing stabilizer with the homeless population (families/individuals). Her running journey started in High School. She did not know anything about the sport of running until I joined the Cross-Country Team. Running was fun & enjoyed the transition of it all. When she started to see her body change, running became an obsession and eventually an eating disorder, anorexia. While Mayra is thankful that she was able to get out of her eating disorder, it still hunts her here and there today. She writes, "I catch myself comparing myself to others, but I have to remind myself & I want others to know that any person who runs has a “runner’s body” no matter the weight, build, age, ability or health status. It took me some time, but I am thankful for my body per it has endured tough workouts, ran many races (5k, 10k, half-marathons, marathons, 50k’s and currently training for my first 50 miler). I continue to run today with my F.A.C.T Team my current coach, Armand, is amazing, he is not only our coach but our therapist & he gives us such great advice when we are being tough on ourselves. Overall, I am thankful for RUNNING, per it’s brought me so many good people in my life, people that I now consider family and meeting my now fiancé (he proposed when he finished Angeles Crest 100 Miler in 2016). Thank you all for listening to my story." A few topics we discuss include: -How she got started with running, and more specifically, trail running -The role that community plays in her running journey -Aspects that have helped her when it comes to comparison and body image challenges -Advice Mayra would tell her younger self -What being a Strong Runner Chick means to Mayra Follow Mayra @Born2Run87 on Instagram. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/strong-runner-chicks/support
Troy Howard- https://www.linkedin.com/in/troy-howard-a0b4b94/ I completed my first 100 mile trail run around 2007 at Angeles Crest in Southern California. I came in second and had such a positive experience. In 2009 I ran my first Hardrock 100 in Southern Colorado’s San Juan mountains. It was unlike anything I thought was possible. I came in second in the second fastest time on record. That Hardrock experience led my wife and I to decide to leave California and make the move to Colorado where we still live today. I worked for Vail Resorts for 9 years where I led their HR & Finance systems. I also received the CIO 100 award for implementing real-time lift line wait times across all of the destination resorts. A year ago I left Vail Resorts for the opportunity to live more directly in the mountains and for a company more aligned with my values. I now work for Aspen Skiing Company where help run all of Aspen’s systems. Sidenote: I have a heart condition known as a “bicuspid aortic valve” where one chamber of my heart is ~50% less efficient. I’ve been told that if it was 100% I’d see a material improvement in my athletic performance. Not sure I buy that. I think it hinders my anaerobic performance, but has no real impact for ultra distances where it’s as much mental as it is physical. Athletic highlights: 11 100 mile run finishes 6 Leadville 100 mountain bike finishes 5 Elk Mountain Grand Traverse ski mountaineering finishes Countless other marathons, ultra marathons less than 100 miles, ski mountaineering races, ultra endurance biking events & races Continue to play hockey recreationally, ski at least 40 days a season, backpacking --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/executiveathletes/support
There are certain people who choose to be a bright shining light and their impact on others becomes exponential because of that decision. That is exactly who Melissa Danehey has become. Melissa is a champion-level trail and ultra runner who started running in college and quickly grew to love the sport. Her evolution into a high-level runner took a turn when she was sexually assaulted over ten years ago. Running became an outlet for her and a way to help her deal with her pain and PTSD. Melissa continued to run, and run, and run until she was running at a near elite level. She proceeded to win the Angeles Crest 100 and place well at many other west coast trail and ultra races. While running helped Melissa deal with her trauma, she was able to fully come to terms with her assault when she embraced therapy in recent years in conjunction with running. Today, Melissa is now on the Board of Directors at Standing Together to End Sexual Assault (STESA) and helping others who have experienced a similar trauma that she endured years ago. She is also on the Rabbit Elite trail team and sponsored by Fluid Nutrition. Welcome all to episode 27 of the show. In this session, I welcome Arin Baharian whom kindly took the time to call in from Southern Cali. During the day, his profession grants him full access to the deepest parts of the automotive business. During his off time, he straps up in a highly worked Ariel Atom to cast his rule over the San Gabriel Mountain range by way of the Angeles Crest Highway (California State Highway 2). We really touch on the spiritual aspect of what it is, what it means, and how to drive this road. People who frequent the run on HWY 2 have a deep connection and respect with the tarmac, which is why it's no surprise the area is filled with passing enthusiasts. Arin and I chat about the rest of his fleet, all providing a totally different experience than the other. My favorite of his is a Mercedes-Benz Sprinter van fully loaded for on-road living, equipped with a mobile office that gives Arin the oppurtunity to drive to the beach, or the mountains and login to work. This guy knows how to California. Tune in. Also, a special shoutout to my boy David (@bmtrdyoo, featured on #016) for connecting Arin and I! They're driving buddies out West, cheers to that!Intro & exit track provided by the talented @ArifOmariandFranklin production squad. Thanks gents

What up! Welcome to episode 16, featuring my boy David Yoo! He called in from & is based in the Los Angeles area, and is one hell of a driver. A great example of someone who knows their car. He drives a E60 M5 (6MT) with a load of suspension work and is a more than frequent goer at the famed Angeles Crest highway. The M5 is a beautifully unusual choice for the ACH, and it takes a proper driver to run it properly amgonst the many track focused cars & bikes on the same route. We chat about the latter, my experiences at the ACH, and close calls. Thanks for joining our session!Intro & exit track provided by the talented @ArifOmariandFranklin production squad. Thanks gents
Two legendary Race Directors, Scotty Mills and Julie Fingar join The Nation to discuss when we will get back to racing, what to expect when we toe the line, and our responsibilities as racers as we transition back to racing. Scotty Mills has raced over 200 ultras and has directed races from 50k to 100 miles including the iconic San Diego 100. Julie Fingar is an elite runner with many podium Finnishes including Angeles Crest 100, Rocky Racoon 100, Rio Del Lago 100, Headlands 100 and top 10 finisher at Western States 100. She is also owner of NorCal Ultras, the engine that produces some of the biggest and oldest trail races, including Way Too Cool 50K, American River 50 Mile, and Rio Del Lago 100 mile races. Check out ITRA's Race Guidelines: a framework of standard operating guidelines that race organizers from around the world can reference, so that we can restart trail running events confident that we are applying good practice to keep our community of trail runners - including participants, volunteers and host communities - safe.
The laughs and love continue in our second of two visits with Jason Dorgan and Timo Yanacheck, the two former directors of the historic Kettle Moraine 100. In this episode, we get the Dirt on how the legendary RD's met and their extensive racing careers. Jason shares some hilarious stories from running the Great Canadian Death Race, Angeles Crest 100, and the Grand Slam of Trail Running. We (politely) squeeze out of modest Timo his stories from running the Boston Marathon, Western States 100, and Leadville 100. These two may have retired from RDing the Kettle Moraine 100, but they never stop inspiring us. Listen in to hear about their ongoing advocacy efforts and Timo's talents outside running.
Hal Koerner is a legend in the world of ultra-running who was one of the early pioneers of the sport. He has victories at Kettle Morraine 100, The Bear 100, Angeles Crest, Western States hardrock 100 and so many more… He is the owner of a specialty running store, Rogue Valley Runners, located in the mountainous Southern Oregon town of Ashland. Hal featured in JB Benna's feature-length documentary "Unbreakable: The Western States 100". In 2014, he published "Hal Koerner's Field Guide to Ultrarunning" and was released by VeloPress. The book details training for an ultra marathon; from 50k to 100 miles. Recorded in 2012. “Running is about finding your inner peace, and so is a life well lived.” Dean Karnazes I’ve known today’s guest for a number of years. In my past life, before real estate and before network marketing I was in the bar business. I was managing bars. Big, loud, crazy party bars surrounded by booze and bad decisions. And although the time to leave that lifestyle came and I don’t regret it at all, I do miss the relationships that I made then. There are a lot of great people I worked with on a regular basis back then and Melissa was one of them. Melissa Danehey is a native North Carolinian whose love for the California coast drew her there in 2014. She has her Masters in Nutrition and Currently is the Nutrition and Children’s Program Manager at the Food Bank Coalition of San Luis Obispo where she Develops and implements community health education activities and related general health education programs for individuals and groups. In her spare time, Melissa runs trails, lots and lots of trails. LIke lots of trails. Seriously yo. Alot. She competes in ultra marathons. Her ‘no-quit’ attitude has earned her 18 ultra marathon finishes, including 10 podium finishes and 2 overall wins. She Has placed second in 2 24 hour races and FIRST in the Born to run 100 miler AND the 2019 Angeles Crest 100 mile race.. She’s also an entrepreneur as the founder and owner of Summit Natural Skin Care, a skincare and hygiene solution for the outdoor adventurer. She loves to play piano, and spend time with her daughter and 2 dogs. She is also a foster/resource parent and a Big Sister. She’s a fantastic person with a huge heart and today, she opens that huge heart up about running, relationships, divorce and being a single mom. Sean Nakamura is an insanely talented ultrarunner who just became the 4th person to complete The Great Eight - the eight original 100 mile races - in one summer. Hey Cultra Nation! Have we got a good one for you today, it's a very special episode with the one and only Howie Breinan sitting in with us and his story is amazing. First ultra finish before the age of 10? Check. Several breaks followed by huge comebacks? Check. Triumph over adversity? Check. This show has everything, and the term "hundo" is ubiquitous (as is epic, stout, beta, etc.), Art has an extra helping of potty mouth tonight (and gets called out for it), Jimmy makes a bold, dare I say audacious claim re: his finish at Bimblers, Brian is his usual snarky and witty self and #hundojoe adds to his legendary legend. Brian MacKenzie aka BMac joins Schep for episode 026 of The Coastal Athlete Program Podcast to talk about what went into writing Power Speed Endurance, breathing for success, and how to view sport as art. BMac is another one of those guests who has found himself at key pivot points within the field of human performance and if you listen close enough the common themes are starting to emerge. If you have been listening to us for a while a lot of stuff may sound familiar since Schep and BMac have little to no patience for things that detract from the goal of physical readiness. Train like your life depends on it because ultimately that is in fact the case. Brian Mackenzie is an expert in the development and application of custom protocols to optimize human health and performance. His work harnesses and integrates respiratory, movement, strength and endurance-based training approaches to elicit unprecedented positive results. His protocols have been used to accelerate and raise both mental and physical performance in world-class Olympic and professional athletes, top exceutives, and elite military operators, as well as to improve the health for people suffering from various chronic illnesses. Everyday people have also used Brian's tools to reduce pathologic stress and to vastly heighten their mental and physical well being and performance. A highly unique feature of Brian's approach is that he voluntarily and repeatedly subjects his protocols to rigorous 3rd party scientific testing, re-testing and improvement, at top institutions including Stanford University School of Medicine, Florida A&M University and The Center for Sports Performance. Few, if any, experts directly seek to apply unbiased laboratory and field testing to their craft as Mackenzie does. Brian is himself a highly accomplished athlete. He completed the Ironman (Canada, 2004), completed both the The Western States 100 (2006) mile and The Angeles Crest 100 (2007) mile runs using adapted training protocols he developed to avoid injury and fatigue. Also a prolific writer, Brian co-authored the book Power Speed Endurance, The New York Times Best Seller UnBreakable Runner, and UnPlugged, which assesses the integration of emergent technology and human performance. His programs have been featured in Outside Magazine, Men's Health, Runners World, Triathlete Magazine, Men's Journal, ESPN Rise, as well as periodicals such as The Economist. Brian and his protocols have been featured in 4 of Timothy Ferriss' New York Times bestselling books including: “The 4-Hour Body” and “Tools of Titans”. Brian MacKenzie's programs have been taught at more than 400 seminars worldwide and are used by thousands of athletes ranging from beginners to elite medalists and record holders via his “Power, Speed, Endurance” platform and by private consultation. Currently, Brian is the Creative Director at Power Speed Endurance a company focused on the optimization of human performance, corporate performance and the delivery of science based protocols to optimize physical, emotional and cognitive performance for health. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/cappodcast/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/cappodcast/support

Breathing is the physiological intercept to our mental state. So, if things are going haywire, I can turn back to my breathing and control the physiological reactions that are happening in my mind. If I can take a step back and do that, I'm actually fixing the entire system. - Brian Mackenzie How can you enhance your health through nostril breathing versus breathing through the mouth? JOIN THE FACEBOOK GROUP | REVIEW THIS PODCAST 20% OFF ORGANIFI - USE CODE: WELLNESSFORCE On Wellness Force Radio episode 203, the mind behind The Art of the Breath Clinics, Co-Founder of Power Speed, Endurance, and Co-Author of Unplugged, Brian Mackenzie, shares why breathing is a by-product of what's going on in the brain, how to be more mindful of technology use, and how we can change our state of mind at any moment we choose. Discover the process of rewiring the subconscious mind through conscious training, breathwork, and heightened awareness. "There's an integrative piece in the body that breathing is a by-product of what's going on in the brain. Our emotions, pain, or what we're cognitively thinking is actually our respiration rate if we're not consciously aware." - @brianmackenzie http://bit.ly/wfpodcast The Art of Breath Are you ready for the tools that will change your game? Sign up now to participate in an upcoming The Art of Breath clinic. In less than a day you can learn the exact tools to perform better, manage stress & improve health. Imagine being able to mix it with the big dogs in a workout and not get gassed. Imagine being able to reduce your stress in less than 10 minutes in the comfort of your own home or at your work desk. Imagine being able to maximize your Oxygen usage to become a fatigue resistant machine. You can do all this. But you need the tools. That is where the Art of Breath comes in. At an Art of Breath clinic, you will learn: Why you should breathe through your nose during your training so you can go harder and faster for longer. What the diaphragm is and what it does because it may be the most important muscle you’re not using. How to increase your tolerance to carbon dioxide because it is the key to accessing your fuel stores. How to mobilize your upper back so you can use your lungs to their fullest. How your breath is the key to your mental state so that you can manage the stress of everyday life. How to use breath work into training sessions so that you, or your clients, can enjoy the power of the breath. Listen To Episode 203 As Brian Mackenzie Uncovers: What he is currently working on with breathwork and the mind. How to be more mindful of technology use. How we can change our state of mind at any moment we choose. Why we're almost using technology as a crutch for our natural sensory units. How to use non-meditative methods to enhance your state of mind. The process of rewiring the subconscious mind through conscious training and heighten awareness. How we can alter our minds in the present moment in order to re-focus on the task at hand. A common thread between improper breathing and poor performance. The concept that everything is everything and it all can be integrable to the point where anything from breathing to posture affects who we are. Why technology cannot ultimately replace our internal awareness. His thoughts on mouth taping and whether it's beneficial or not. How he trained himself to no longer breathe through the mouth as he slept. Cueing nostril breath practices vs. breathing through the mouth and when one is more appropriate than the other for high performance What you can gain and learn from training yourself to only breathe through the nostrils. The fact that the yoga world has been focusing on breathing solely through the nostrils for ages. Power Quotes From The Show "Meditation is a practice that you put into play that becomes a part of what you're doing. I can breathe, visualize, or focus on some sounds. We need to make these changes in the moment so that we can refocus on the task at hand." - @brianmackenzie http://bit.ly/wfpodcast "By design, we want comfort and we want life to be easy. Just look at the world we live in today. It's so easy today to get food or whatever we want at any given moment but go back a hundred years and it wasn't possible. I'm not saying there's anything wrong with it but we get so focused on what is making things easy and comfortable that we forget that the only reason we make change is because of discomfort. Getting caught in that, we get afraid of stepping outside our comfort complex of technology." - Brian Mackenzie "I daily catch myself spending too much time on my phone but I know what I need to do as a result of that. So, if I've been on my phone for too long, I know I need to take a visual break because my visual system actually works with my physiology and my entire body reacts. In those situations, I do a breathing pattern, look 20 feet away from me in the distance, listen to music, or go outside to easily change what I'm doing for a few minutes to instantly improve how I feel." - Brian Mackenzie "Meditation is a practice that you put into play that becomes a part of what you're doing, but I can breathe, look at my visual system, or focus in on some sounds. I can do a lot of things in the moment and this is what we're really trying to teach. We want to be able to make these changes in the moment so that I can focus on what I need to or be open to what I need to do." - Brian Mackenzie "Technology is only being used to get us back to what it is that we're capable of actually doing ourselves. Technology is going to help and allow us to do a lot more, but how far are we removing ourselves from these basic physiological responses? Technologically is going to allow us to get back to that place." - Brian Mackenzie "Everybody has a response to fear. Even Navy SEALS have the exact same response that you and I have and these are the supposed to be the people who aren't afraid of anything, but that's not true; we're all the same and we all have the same reaction. It's about how fast they come back to their baseline. Most of us have a great jolt of fear and then it takes awhile to come back down or we need to be in that state of anxiety or sympathy for a longer period of time. That's where our breathing is playing the biggest role." - Brian Mackenzie Links From Today's Show Brian Mackenzie Facebook Twitter Instagram YouTube LinkedIn The Art of Breath Power Speed Endurance Unplugged Unbreakable Runner Power Speed ENDURANCE How to Be Mindful When You Have Seasonal Allergies Brian Mackenzie on the Effects of Breathing on Recovery Brian MacKenzie on the Benefits of Nasal Breathing, Downregulation & More! This week we welcome to the show Brian MacKenzie. He is a human performance and movement specialist. He is the innovator of the endurance, strength and conditioning paradigm. He has studied performance and movement since 2001 with altitude, hypoxia, breathing mechanics & methods, along with heat and cold exposure. He has spent a lot of his time training and understanding in and around the water, and desert. He has participated in Ironman (Canada 2004), and has run the Western States 100 and the Angeles Crest 100 mile endurance runs. He co-authored the books Power Speed Endurance, and The New York Times Best Seller UnBreakable Runner. Questions we ask in this episode: When it comes to training, I’ve heard you say quality vs quantity and methods are many, principles are few, please explain? What areas of exercise modalities would you encourage the weekend warrior who wants a rounded approach to their health, movement and longevity? You free dived with Great White Sharks. Why? Where does your passion for breathwork come from? You're currently collaborating with Stanford University's Neuroscience Dept. on how breath can influence our 'state', what have you discovered? I was intrigued by your book Unplugged, what can the reader expect from this? And this week, our fantastic guest is Brian Mackenzie, who is a human performance and movement specialist. Not only that, he's a top bloke and a lot of fun and just got a stack of wisdom and experience behind him, so it was great to have him on the show today. He's studied performance and movement since 2001 with altitude, hypoxia, breathing mechanics, methods along with heat and cold exposure as well. And we also dive into his more recent project, The Art of Breath, which of course I'm pretty passionate about as well. We even get into his book, Unplugged, and why he recently free-dived without a cage with great white sharks as well, which just blew my mind. So it's all in there. I don't care what you do. There's nuggets of wisdom for everyone in this podcast, and I have no doubt you're going to enjoy. And I also want to mention, don't forget guys, we are offering all the podcast listeners a 15% discount on any of our 180 Nutrition products at the moment. All you have to do is go back to the shopping cart and enter the discount code 180 podcast and you can receive a 15% discount. [00:01:30] Yeah, what I will mention as well is check out our new organic hemp blend protein as well, guys. It is phenomenal. We literally just launched it this week, and the laws have been changing around hemp. We've been excited to bring this protein to the marketplace as well, cause it's an all plant-based protein, and personally, I'm in love with it at the moment. Anyway, you can check that out as well, and the discount code applies for that too. Anyway, let's go over to Brian McKenzie. Enjoy! [00:02:00] Hi, this is Guy Lawrence. I'm joined with Stuart Cook, as always. Good morning, Stu. Stu Hello mate! Guy And our awesome guest today is Brian Mackenzie. Brian, welcome to the show, dude. Brian Thanks for having me, boys. Pleasure. Guy It's been a long time coming. Your name has popped up on different views and podcasts over the last 12 months at least. So it's like oh, we gotta get Brian on the show. So yeah, very appreciative of your time, mate. Brian Yeah, absolutely. Guy So we have a question we ask everyone when we kick off, and that is, "If a stranger stopped you on the street and asked you what you did for a living, what would you say? Brian I don't know. Stu Don't speak to strangers. Brian [00:03:30] Yeah. Literally I'd say, "I don't know." I could equate doing yard work to that's part of my job or working out, that's part of my job, or screwing around with breathing or screwing around with a kettlebell or whatever, or walking my dogs. That's part of work, you know? It literally is, because I'm trying to understand things, connect dots, and make things happen in a way that ... you know I've been able to ... I do believe I'm fortunate, but I do believe that I've kept something that a lot of people just really ditch and think that they gotta get in, like "I gotta get a job," which I understand that. I've played that game, but I've remained curious enough to be able to develop things that have allowed me to do what it is I really want to do. http://180nutrition.com.au/180-tv/brian-mackenzie-interview/

The Art of Breath Clinich (From the Power Speed and Endurance webpage - http://powerspeedendurance.com/event/georgia-art-of-breath-clinic/) If we don’t breathe, we die. Although we all know this simple fact breathing remains the most underutilized component of health and human performance. The Art of Breath (AoB) is a program developed to give participants an experience based understanding of how breathing can affect both short term performance and long term health. Through a variety of simple and effective teaching tools we will help illuminate this powerful practice and help you grab this low hanging fruit. The AoB purpose is to help facilitate a deeper understanding of the physiological process so that each person can ultimately tailor their own breath practice to his or her individual needs. Rob’s journey is about developing a deeper understanding of human performance to better serve those who wish to actualize their potential. Rob’s underpinning philosophy is borrowed from the tenets of Jeet Kune Do: Research your own experience Absorb what is useful Reject what is useless Add what is specifically your own

I first learned about Brian MacKenzie when I was training for my first Ironman’s and I read his books about endurance and mobility and he changed my concepts about what was possible with running. Basically, pounding out miles just doesn’t work as you get older (and when younger too). But this doesn’t apply to just running…… Brian applies exponential training approaches to optimize human performance; he relentlessly challenges conventions and tests assumptions. Recently I was reacquainted with Brian’s work when I started training with Wim Hof's cold and breathing methods and was looking to see who else was interested in them….. So I reached out to ask him on the show. Major take – aways from this episode are: How you can change anything with 10 breaths. Using breathing techniques to amplify, deepen and quicken meditation benefits. The power of breath work to stabilize mood regulation and reactive behavior patterns. Co2 adaptation + Integrating breathing, ice and heat. How to activate the Vagus nerve. Importance of diaphramatic breathing. Using breathing to access Flow States. Proper breathing technique for sport, business and life. Mobility – the importance of keeping tissue supple. Eating principles vs fads to follow that Brian coaches people on related to a) Vegetables; b)humanely treated animal protein (not stressed); c) High quality fats. The impact of a) sugar; b) processed foods; c) hydration; d) high quality breads. Must read and listen to Netflix video by Mike Pollan, “Cooked” and In Defense of Food – An Eaters Manifesto. Taking personal responsibility of your health by engaging your doctor. Benefits of getting your genetics tested (Wellness fx). Dumbing down technology so that you can feel again. Mike Rowe on the importance of working opportunities not passion. I have linked up all the show notes on redzonetech.net/podcast where you can get access to Brian’s blog publications. She's a swimmer and practices 2 1/2 hrs 4 times/wk and attends meets 2 times/month. My daughter is 5 ft 3 inches and weighs 103#. She swims year round and is off 3 weeks in the fall and in the spring. I noticed during her fall/winter season, she was often sick, fatigued, and her swim times didn't improve. After evaluating her food intact, I noticed she was only eating about 20-30 grams of protein/day. She is a "picky" eater and prefers carbs over protein. I have since been pushing protein, but I'm having difficulties getting her to eat a variety of sources. She will eat chicken, turkey, and eggs. I've tried a variety of whey protein smoothes, but she doesn't like them. She takes a multi-vitamin. I will be changing her to one you recommend on your web site. How much protein should she be getting and are there any other supplements you think would be helpful for her? Lori asks: I've been observing a pattern in myself in the last few months concerning protein powders and I'm hoping you can help me make sense of this puzzle. I've noticed when I consume a protein shake containing whey that my blood sugar takes a dive within an hour and I have to eat something else. I've observed with any mix with whey in it. I currently have some Hammer whey and some Mt. Capra double bonded goat protein powder. On the other hand, if I consume a protein shake with other kinds of protein--and in this case I'm referring specifically to Living Fuel (which is brown rice and yellow pea protein) or Nutiva Hemp protein powder that I can potentially go 4-5 hours quite comfortably. I thought perhaps it was just what I was adding to the powder or when I was using it. In an effort to sort it out, in the last month I started to use all of the above (proteins) in the exact same way (after exercise,) and I kept the added ingredients that I added exactly the same--almond milk and frozen strawberries. I got the same results. Whey behaves like it is giving me a glycemic spike--even when consumed in those first 30 minutes after exercise. Does this mean I just don't do well with whey? What is going on here --I'm perplexed. Mike asks: Ben, you've mentioned that taking vitamin supplements near the time of drinking coffee can reduce the affects. How long before or after drinking coffee should one take supplements to get the most benefit. In my response to Mike, I recommend reading http://www.pacificfit.net/coffee.php Rebecca asks: I recently listened to one of your podcasts where talked about the negative affects of hormonal birth control.I have seriously been thinking about switching to a non-hormonal IUD because I think being on the pill has been hindering my ability to lose weight. In your experience, how much easier is it to lose weight being off of hormonal birth control? Also what is your opinion of non-hormonal IUDs? Bill asks: I've listed to a number of your podcasts (which are excellent!) and hoping you can advise me on how best to lose approx 10 lbs over the next 2-3 months before I enter my build up phase for my next Ironman (IM WA in December). I'm 6'2"; 185 lbs and 48 yrs old. The area I'd like to target is stomach and thighs. I' recently started changing my diet to reduce intake of sugar; whites and processed foods and reduce on carbs in evening meal to reduce insulin response. Your advise/tips would be greatly appreciated. In my response to Bill, I recommend he: -Go to the upper right corner of http://www.bengreenfieldfitness.com -Do search for "fat loss video" -Access the top 3 results Mike Burns asks: I was wondering if you might be able to help me. I get pain on the inside of my forearm, just above the elbow when I use the preacher curl machine at the gym. It feels more like stop doing what your doing pain, rather then muscles being worked pain. The machine has stationary handles so I can't adjust the way my wrists are turned. I can do concentration curls with dumbbells, and curls with the cable machine with no problems. Should I just avoid the preacher curl machine from now on? Etana asks: I'm a vegan Ben. Some vegetarian vegan products such as cheese have casein in them. Am I cheating on my vegan diet by consuming dairy subsitute products such as "dairy free" cheese and coffee creamer by consuming products with casein in them? It's hard to find dairy free products without casein, a milk derivitive. Craig asks: What do you think of Dr. Romanov's Pose method of Triathlon? I've been a Pose runner for years but I'd love to hear your take in it. Finally, Luke Powell calls in with a testimonial about the Triathlon Dominator. -------------------------------------------- Remember, if you have any trouble listening, downloading, or transferring to your mp3 player just e-mail ben@bengreenfieldfitness.com And don't forget to leave the podcast a ranking in iTunes - it only takes 2 minutes of your time and helps grow our healthy community! Music & Lyrics by Jesse Miller - Copyright 2009 'For Andy' Thinking 'bout Andy, just the other day How the time passes and vanishes into the haze Thinking 'bout Andy, what is there to say? I'm sad that you left us and wishing that you could have stayed Thinking 'bout you today Ms. Durden was wrong to be so hard on you The kids in the school yard, I guess that included me, Drew Hey look there's Andy rolling down the hill Jamers and Crystal, and sometimes Johanna there too Remember the time on my ramp with your knee? Jumped out of the way, and stood there as I watched you bleed Or how 'bout the time when my mom banged her head You asked if she was alright, she told you to go home instead I'm sorry, my friend When I get there to Heaven, my friend Will you vouch for me, share your couch with me? We'll watch us a movie or two And head down to Chris & Tom's liquor store just like we used to Oh Andy, I miss you Demerol days when I pushed you away, Kicked you out of the band, and couldn't quite see where you landed I went off to art school, you stuck with the bass And held down the rhythm in jazz band, as you took my place Came into your own, in spite of your blues You joined a fraternity seeking acceptance through proof They found you off Angeles Crest in your car A hose through the window, exhausting your suffering heart Soon to depart This lonesome night I'll be singing this song to you, hoping you push on through You gave up the fight I don't blame you for checking out, I've had the same thought, no doubt And yet here I Am Well I'll see you on the other side then God's love for you will never end and neither will mine I'm all grown up with kids now, maybe you're one of them If reincarnation is real, and I think that it is, my friend Emet is four now, and Jade almost two Every time Emet laughs really hard, man he looks just like you Lynzie never met you, a shame we didn't speak leading up to your exit Her Great-grandma joined you the following week I know she's looking out for you up the sky With good old home cooking and generous helpings of apple pie Thinking 'bout you tonight When I get there to Heaven, my friend Will you please save me a seat? Forgive me for all of the times I was cruel and I was mean If it takes me a hundred more years will you still remember me? Lord knows I could never forget Andy *In loving memory of Andrew Mark Dolan www.mypspace.com/jessemillerband jessemillerband@gmail.com jessemillerband.podomatic.com Painting, 'Couch' by Fred Bell www.fredbellpaintings.blogspot.com
