Jeffrey Stern is an elite ultrarunner, a coach obsessed with keeping athletes happy, and a storyteller inside the sport who understands what it really takes to stay in it for decades, not just seasons.Jeffrey has completed the oldest trail race in America, the Dipsea Race, an astounding 16 consecutive times–and even recorded a personal best in his most recent foray. He's also set several Fastest Known Times (FKTs), including the Backbone Trail (a 68-mile traverse in the Santa Monica Mountains), and the Los Padres Traverse (42 mile route). These FKTs didn't appear overnight: he has a history of crushing long-distance races of all kinds. His overall PRs in running include 15:55 for the 5000m, 1:12 for the half marathon, 2:36 for the marathon, 3:22 for the 50k, 6:07 for the 50 mile, 8:29 for the 100k, and 15:35 for the 100 mile. In the summer of 2024, he undertook a challenge to run two mountainous 100-mile races (Cascade Crest 100 and Angeles Crest 100) just two weeks apart. Jeff impacts the sport in many ways beyond just setting impressive long distance times. He serves as an assistant editor and columnist for Ultra Running Magazine, where he writes event recaps and athlete profiles. As a coach he provides customized training plans for endurance athletes. And he is the race director for the Tamalpa Headlands 50K, the same race that originally drew him into ultrarunning. Take our listener survey! Dom and Andy are back with a mind-bending, occasionally stomach-turning episode of Between Two Pines. Dom recounts his very pukey Angeles Crest 100 experience (complete with landscape-mode vomit footage), while Andy reflects on the etiquette of awkward road-path drafting and the fine legal distinctions of fart assault. Then, the guys welcome ultrarunning phenom Rachel Entrekin, fresh off her 18-race winning streak and course-record run at Cocodona 250. Rachel talks training secrets, fueling mishaps, PT superpowers, and why running might just be her way of filling the void. Along the way, the conversation veers into Yelp reviews of trail poops, the Hunter S. Thompson 50-miler, racing turtles (vs. bears), and whether Rachel might one day join the French contingent at Hardrock. Thanks to our sponsors, Janji and Dirtbag Bar!

This week on HappyCast, we welcome Melissa Perez—trail runner, graduate student, community leader, and self-proclaimed lover of the f-word—for a raw and powerful conversation about what it means to run scared and come out the other side stronger. Hot off her recent finish at the notoriously tough High Lonesome 100, Melissa shares how altitude, hyponatremia, and mental fatigue collided in the Colorado mountains—and why this race stands out as one of the most transformative of her life.Joined by hosts Andrew and Stephanie, Melissa opens up about the unexpected challenges of back-to-back 100s (with Angeles Crest looming just one week after), why representation on the trails matters so deeply, and how she's shifted from racing to heal past trauma to racing in celebration of her growth. From last-minute pacer miracles to clear-pee paranoia, nothing is off the table in this candid chat.We also hear about her all-women's trail group, Chingonas on the Run, her love for champagne and screamo playlists, and her very special race-day accessory that always brings joy. If you've ever doubted your readiness, questioned your path, or needed a reminder that it's okay to show up scared—this one's for you.Be sure to subscribe to the podcast wherever you listen, and we always appreciate you leaving a good rate and review. On today's episode of the Free Outside Show, we're joined by Grant Barnette—a thru-hiker turned Pro ultrarunner who has tackled some of the toughest races in the world. Grant has hiked the Appalachian Trail and Pacific Crest Trail, holds the DC Peaks 50 course record, placed 2nd at Grindstone 100, 5th at Speedgoat 50K, and was the third American at CCC at UTMB. Most recently, he signed a pro contract with Craft. Follow Grant online: https://www.instagram.com/runwithgrant/ We dive into how he transitioned from carrying a heavy pack on the PCT to discovering Angeles Crest 100 in middle of a thru-hike, his nomadic lifestyle living out of his truck while chasing FKTs, and his journey through ski mountaineering and backcountry adventures in Utah. He shares his take on training with a job, fueling strategies, sponsorships, and the challenges of race selection for the US Trail Team. Plus, we discuss the controversial selection process for the World Trail Running Championships, how social media and live-streaming influence race prestige, and what it's like lining up next to Jim Walmsley at UTMB. Takeaways Grant Barnett has a rich background in trail running and ultra events. The transition from through-hiking to competitive running can be inspired by encounters on the trail. Living in a truck and pursuing a passion for running can lead to unexpected opportunities. Ski mountaineering offers a unique training method for ultra running. The importance of mentorship in outdoor sports is highlighted through Grant's relationship with Joey Campanelli. Media coverage significantly influences race popularity and athlete opportunities. Qualifying races for championships may not always reflect true mountain running skills. The culture of ski resorts can mirror the lifestyle of through-hikers. Nutrition and hydration strategies change drastically in winter sports. Community support and shared experiences are vital in the outdoor sports world. Wasatch 100 is a historic race but lacks hype. Experiencing a DNF can be deeply embarrassing. Bouncing back from a DNF is crucial for growth. The bond between twin athletes can be unique and supportive. Modern running science is complex and ever-evolving. Finding what works for your body is essential in fueling. Crew support can significantly impact race performance. The emotional toll of racing can be challenging to navigate. The evolution of race formats keeps the sport dynamic. Shoes and gear have advanced significantly in recent years. John Maynard appears to be the perfect combination of ultra experience and positive mindset. On the running side, he figured out pretty early on that he was built for endurance, covering 18 miles in the 5th grade to win a season pass to Great America. And he has continued to develop that endurance to the point that he just toed the starting line of the Angeles Crest 100, which was his 3rd 100 mile event in the last 10 months. And we are just as excited to dive into mindset with this guy because he comes across as one of the most positive, encouraging individuals that we have connected with in the space. So stick around to hear how he got into ultra, the powerful rules that he lives by, and all the juicy, painful details of his recent ultra experiences. Enjoy the episode! You have a plan; you prepared relentlessly; and when you set out on your journey everything seems to be going just as planned; and then, when you least expect it; everything falls apart. How do you keep going when what you worked so hard for slips through your fingers? And how do you keep going when everything just plain hurts? In this episode Sally talks about her recent race at Angeles Crest 100 in Wrightwood, California; one of the toughest 100 mile races in the nation. Run entirely in altitude with big climbs, intense heat; and everything in between; these are the trails where Sally became a mountain runner over a decade ago. Sally breaks down the race; offers invaluable insight into tackling tough challenges; and how she kept going after her quads "blew out" with 30 miles/50km left to go. Sally also talks about the importance of this race as number two in the Choose Strong Project and hits hard on the topic of DNFs, Caring for your one body; and Never quitting. Joined by co-host and husband, Eddie McRae; this balanced episode of laughter, real-talk...and singing (yes Singing!) marks their 10th episode! Happy Double Digits Choose Strong Podcast! He began in ministry as a youth pastor and then senior/lead pastor for churches in Southern California. Camps at ACCC have been filled since the 1940s with young people being challenged by outdoor recreation events or connecting around campfires with their church groups, all while sharing the fun and laughter of camp games. In this episode we wander around the surprisingly busy Genesee Valley Park with Charlie Granger. Charlie is heading to Western States this year! But he's been out west before this… Angeles Crest 100 was his first hundred miler. He's from the San Gabriel mountains, so you know, it just made sense. As for locally, you may have seen Charlie around Twisted Branch 100k, Many on the Genny or maybe most recently at Cayuga Trails 50k. This was a fun experiment of a podcast, Charlie and I participate in a quite eventful day at Genesee Valley park and chat about how his training is going, how he plans (or doesn't) for these big events and just some life things in general. And as you'll see, both of us have a bit of a fun time trying to remember, well… anything from the past. So feel free to shout into the air as you hear us stumble through a bunch of “thought exercises” Special Guest: Charlie Granger.
In this episode of She Runs Trails, I interview @melissarunstrails.
We sat down with Mireya and learned about her journey to running in the Western States 100 Endurance Run. She started running in high school but it was her experience of crewing for her husband when he ran, and won, the Angeles Crest 100 that inspired her to give the 100 mile distance a shot. In 2021 she earned a Golden Ticket to Western States via the Black Canyon 100k and set her sights on cracking the top ten on her run from Olympic Valley to Placer High school. She hopes that her experience will also inspire Latinas to learn about the sport of ultra running and bring more Latinos into the sport.
Mayra Lopez Garcia is a proud Mexican American, born and raised in South Los Angeles. She currently lives in Palmdale, CA. She works with the homeless families and individuals as a housing stabilizer. She started running in her junior year by joining the her high school cross-country team. As she started running, coming from a softball background, she slowly started to lose weight. As she started to see her body change running became an obsession, she wanted to run more and lose more weight. As a result she began to stop eating and developed the eating disorder, anorexia. She became very good at hiding her eating and exercise habits. Eventually Mayra's coach noticed her weight loss and encouraged her recovery. Mayra says, "I am thankful that I was able to get out from my eating disorder, but it still hunts me here and there today. I catch myself comparing myself to others. I want others to know that any person who runs has a “runner's body” no matter the weight, build, age, ability or health status. It took me some time, but I am thankful for my body per it has endured tough workouts, ran many races." Mayra has run distances from the 5k up to a 58 Mile race. She continues to run with F.A.C.T Team and her current coach. She qualified for and is training for Boston Marathon 2021 and the Rio De Lago 100 which are a month apart. For Mayra, running has brought many good people into her life including her fiancé, who proposed when he finished Angeles Crest 100 Miler in 2016. ****To follow Mayra visit her on Instagram @born2run87 (https://www.instagram.com/born2run87/) *** ****Host, Coach Pilar Arthur-Snead, https://linktr.ee/mindfulrunner **** Leave me a message at https://anchor.fm/pilar-arthur-snead/message*** ***Please Like and Subscribe to The Last Tenth Podcast on You Tube: https://bit.ly/37foa2f ***Listen to The Last Tenth Podcast on: Anchor.fm (https://anchor.fm/pilar-arthur-snead), Apple Podcasts (https://apple.co/3lXB5ek), Please be sure to leave your positive feedback and 5 star review on Apple Podcasts! Mayra Lopez Garcia is 33 years old, Mexican-American and was born in raise in South Los Angeles. She lives in Palmdale, CA, where her current occupation is a housing stabilizer with the homeless population (families/individuals). Her running journey started in High School. She did not know anything about the sport of running until I joined the Cross-Country Team. Running was fun & enjoyed the transition of it all. When she started to see her body change, running became an obsession and eventually an eating disorder, anorexia. While Mayra is thankful that she was able to get out of her eating disorder, it still hunts her here and there today. She writes, "I catch myself comparing myself to others, but I have to remind myself & I want others to know that any person who runs has a “runner’s body” no matter the weight, build, age, ability or health status. It took me some time, but I am thankful for my body per it has endured tough workouts, ran many races (5k, 10k, half-marathons, marathons, 50k’s and currently training for my first 50 miler). I continue to run today with my F.A.C.T Team my current coach, Armand, is amazing, he is not only our coach but our therapist & he gives us such great advice when we are being tough on ourselves. Overall, I am thankful for RUNNING, per it’s brought me so many good people in my life, people that I now consider family and meeting my now fiancé (he proposed when he finished Angeles Crest 100 Miler in 2016). Thank you all for listening to my story." Troy Howard- https://www.linkedin.com/in/troy-howard-a0b4b94/ I completed my first 100 mile trail run around 2007 at Angeles Crest in Southern California. I came in second and had such a positive experience. In 2009 I ran my first Hardrock 100 in Southern Colorado’s San Juan mountains. It was unlike anything I thought was possible. I came in second in the second fastest time on record. That Hardrock experience led my wife and I to decide to leave California and make the move to Colorado where we still live today. I worked for Vail Resorts for 9 years where I led their HR & Finance systems. I also received the CIO 100 award for implementing real-time lift line wait times across all of the destination resorts. A year ago I left Vail Resorts for the opportunity to live more directly in the mountains and for a company more aligned with my values. I now work for Aspen Skiing Company where help run all of Aspen’s systems. Sidenote: I have a heart condition known as a “bicuspid aortic valve” where one chamber of my heart is ~50% less efficient. I’ve been told that if it was 100% I’d see a material improvement in my athletic performance. Not sure I buy that. I think it hinders my anaerobic performance, but has no real impact for ultra distances where it’s as much mental as it is physical. Athletic highlights: 11 100 mile run finishes 6 Leadville 100 mountain bike finishes 5 Elk Mountain Grand Traverse ski mountaineering finishes Countless other marathons, ultra marathons less than 100 miles, ski mountaineering races, ultra endurance biking events & races Continue to play hockey recreationally, ski at least 40 days a season, backpacking --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/executiveathletes/support
There are certain people who choose to be a bright shining light and their impact on others becomes exponential because of that decision. That is exactly who Melissa Danehey has become. Melissa is a champion-level trail and ultra runner who started running in college and quickly grew to love the sport. Her evolution into a high-level runner took a turn when she was sexually assaulted over ten years ago. Running became an outlet for her and a way to help her deal with her pain and PTSD. Melissa continued to run, and run, and run until she was running at a near elite level. She proceeded to win the Angeles Crest 100 and place well at many other west coast trail and ultra races. While running helped Melissa deal with her trauma, she was able to fully come to terms with her assault when she embraced therapy in recent years in conjunction with running. Today, Melissa is now on the Board of Directors at Standing Together to End Sexual Assault (STESA) and helping others who have experienced a similar trauma that she endured years ago. She is also on the Rabbit Elite trail team and sponsored by Fluid Nutrition. Welcome all to episode 27 of the show. In this session, I welcome Arin Baharian whom kindly took the time to call in from Southern Cali. During the day, his profession grants him full access to the deepest parts of the automotive business. During his off time, he straps up in a highly worked Ariel Atom to cast his rule over the San Gabriel Mountain range by way of the Angeles Crest Highway (California State Highway 2). We really touch on the spiritual aspect of what it is, what it means, and how to drive this road. People who frequent the run on HWY 2 have a deep connection and respect with the tarmac, which is why it's no surprise the area is filled with passing enthusiasts. Arin and I chat about the rest of his fleet, all providing a totally different experience than the other. My favorite of his is a Mercedes-Benz Sprinter van fully loaded for on-road living, equipped with a mobile office that gives Arin the oppurtunity to drive to the beach, or the mountains and login to work. This guy knows how to California. Tune in. Also, a special shoutout to my boy David (@bmtrdyoo, featured on #016) for connecting Arin and I! They're driving buddies out West, cheers to that!Intro & exit track provided by the talented @ArifOmariandFranklin production squad. Thanks gents
Brian MacKenzie aka BMac joins Schep for episode 026 of The Coastal Athlete Program Podcast to talk about what went into writing Power Speed Endurance, breathing for success, and how to view sport as art. BMac is another one of those guests who has found himself at key pivot points within the field of human performance and if you listen close enough the common themes are starting to emerge. If you have been listening to us for a while a lot of stuff may sound familiar since Schep and BMac have little to no patience for things that detract from the goal of physical readiness. Train like your life depends on it because ultimately that is in fact the case. Brian Mackenzie is an expert in the development and application of custom protocols to optimize human health and performance. His work harnesses and integrates respiratory, movement, strength and endurance-based training approaches to elicit unprecedented positive results. His protocols have been used to accelerate and raise both mental and physical performance in world-class Olympic and professional athletes, top exceutives, and elite military operators, as well as to improve the health for people suffering from various chronic illnesses. Everyday people have also used Brian's tools to reduce pathologic stress and to vastly heighten their mental and physical well being and performance. A highly unique feature of Brian's approach is that he voluntarily and repeatedly subjects his protocols to rigorous 3rd party scientific testing, re-testing and improvement, at top institutions including Stanford University School of Medicine, Florida A&M University and The Center for Sports Performance. Few, if any, experts directly seek to apply unbiased laboratory and field testing to their craft as Mackenzie does. Brian is himself a highly accomplished athlete. He completed the Ironman (Canada, 2004), completed both the The Western States 100 (2006) mile and The Angeles Crest 100 (2007) mile runs using adapted training protocols he developed to avoid injury and fatigue. Also a prolific writer, Brian co-authored the book Power Speed Endurance, The New York Times Best Seller UnBreakable Runner, and UnPlugged, which assesses the integration of emergent technology and human performance. Moving into the endurance world, he worked with Dr. Romanov (Creator of POSE Method of Running), and learned about running mechanics very early in his career. He has trained professional athletes from a multitude of sports including the NFL, MMA, and AVP, Running, Cycling, Swimming, and Celebrity. Brian has successfully used CrossFit as the cornerstone of his programming for endurance athletes, while supplementing with sport specific wods. His athletes train sometimes a third of what the norm train with superior results. Brian has been a competitive Ultra Runner. He competed in Ironman and more than 30 ultra marathons ranging from 50k to 100 miles including the Western States 100 and the Angeles Crest 100. During our interview, I ask Brian: -what is crossfit endurance, and how is it different than regular crossfit? -what principles do you use to guide workout design and programming? -can you walk us through a sample week of workouts? -how do you think crossfit endurance compares to the traditional method of triathlon training, and do you think someone could go faster in a triathlon with your method? -how do you reply to critics who argue that weight training does not benefit endurance athletes? During the course of the interview, Brian mentions Arthur Lydiard, Percy Cerutty and Peter Coe as additional references of information for Crossfit Endurance. ----------------------------------------------------- Special Announcements: -Click here to donate $1 to keep this podcast going! -BenGreenfieldFitness Inner Circle is now just $1 for a 14 Day Sneak Peek! First Name Last Name Email Cell # (1+area code) --------------------------------------------------------------- Listener Q&A: ====================================== [contact-form 3 "AskBen"] ====================================== Gina has a call in question: I have a question about my 13 yr old daughter. She's a swimmer and practices 2 1/2 hrs 4 times/wk and attends meets 2 times/month. My daughter is 5 ft 3 inches and weighs 103#. She swims year round and is off 3 weeks in the fall and in the spring. I noticed during her fall/winter season, she was often sick, fatigued, and her swim times didn't improve. After evaluating her food intact, I noticed she was only eating about 20-30 grams of protein/day. She is a "picky" eater and prefers carbs over protein. I have since been pushing protein, but I'm having difficulties getting her to eat a variety of sources. She will eat chicken, turkey, and eggs. I've tried a variety of whey protein smoothes, but she doesn't like them. She takes a multi-vitamin. I will be changing her to one you recommend on your web site. How much protein should she be getting and are there any other supplements you think would be helpful for her? Lori asks: I've been observing a pattern in myself in the last few months concerning protein powders and I'm hoping you can help me make sense of this puzzle. I've noticed when I consume a protein shake containing whey that my blood sugar takes a dive within an hour and I have to eat something else. I've observed with any mix with whey in it. I currently have some Hammer whey and some Mt. Capra double bonded goat protein powder. On the other hand, if I consume a protein shake with other kinds of protein--and in this case I'm referring specifically to Living Fuel (which is brown rice and yellow pea protein) or Nutiva Hemp protein powder that I can potentially go 4-5 hours quite comfortably. I thought perhaps it was just what I was adding to the powder or when I was using it. In an effort to sort it out, in the last month I started to use all of the above (proteins) in the exact same way (after exercise,) and I kept the added ingredients that I added exactly the same--almond milk and frozen strawberries. I got the same results. Whey behaves like it is giving me a glycemic spike--even when consumed in those first 30 minutes after exercise. Does this mean I just don't do well with whey? What is going on here --I'm perplexed. Mike asks: Ben, you've mentioned that taking vitamin supplements near the time of drinking coffee can reduce the affects. How long before or after drinking coffee should one take supplements to get the most benefit. In my response to Mike, I recommend reading http://www.pacificfit.net/coffee.php Rebecca asks: I recently listened to one of your podcasts where talked about the negative affects of hormonal birth control.I have seriously been thinking about switching to a non-hormonal IUD because I think being on the pill has been hindering my ability to lose weight. In your experience, how much easier is it to lose weight being off of hormonal birth control? Also what is your opinion of non-hormonal IUDs? Bill asks: I've listed to a number of your podcasts (which are excellent!) and hoping you can advise me on how best to lose approx 10 lbs over the next 2-3 months before I enter my build up phase for my next Ironman (IM WA in December). I'm 6'2"; 185 lbs and 48 yrs old. The area I'd like to target is stomach and thighs. I' recently started changing my diet to reduce intake of sugar; whites and processed foods and reduce on carbs in evening meal to reduce insulin response. Your advise/tips would be greatly appreciated. In my response to Bill, I recommend he: -Go to the upper right corner of http://www.bengreenfieldfitness.com -Do search for "fat loss video" -Access the top 3 results Mike Burns asks: I was wondering if you might be able to help me. I get pain on the inside of my forearm, just above the elbow when I use the preacher curl machine at the gym. It feels more like stop doing what your doing pain, rather then muscles being worked pain. The machine has stationary handles so I can't adjust the way my wrists are turned. I can do concentration curls with dumbbells, and curls with the cable machine with no problems. Should I just avoid the preacher curl machine from now on? Etana asks: I'm a vegan Ben. Some vegetarian vegan products such as cheese have casein in them. Am I cheating on my vegan diet by consuming dairy subsitute products such as "dairy free" cheese and coffee creamer by consuming products with casein in them? It's hard to find dairy free products without casein, a milk derivitive. Craig asks: What do you think of Dr. Romanov's Pose method of Triathlon? I've been a Pose runner for years but I'd love to hear your take in it. Finally, Luke Powell calls in with a testimonial about the Triathlon Dominator. -------------------------------------------- Remember, if you have any trouble listening, downloading, or transferring to your mp3 player just e-mail ben@bengreenfieldfitness.com And don't forget to leave the podcast a ranking in iTunes - it only takes 2 minutes of your time and helps grow our healthy community!
