Your breath is intimately linked with every aspect of your health – from how you respond to stress to how efficiently your body burns fat. While most of us breathe over 20,000 times a day, few of us pay attention to this automatic process. But it may hold the key to transforming our physical and mental wellbeing. Today's returning guest is the wonderful Brian Mackenzie, Founder & Creative Director of SHIFT, President of The Health and Human Performance Foundation and a world renowned human performance specialist who combines breathing techniques, movement practices, and stress adaptation training to enhance physical and mental performance. His methods have been used by Olympic athletes, professional sports teams and military special forces and Brian's work has undergone rigorous scientific testing at institutions including Stanford University School of Medicine and San Francisco State University. He is also the author of several books including, Unbreakable Runner, Power Speed Endurance and Unplugged. In this fascinating conversation, we explore: Why breathing is "the remote control to the nervous system" and how becoming aware of our breath patterns can help us instantly regulate our stress responses The relationship between the way that we breathe and our ability to burn fat The "Five Gear Breathing System" that matches our breathing technique to different activity levels, from relaxed walking to high-intensity exercise Why nasal breathing (while beneficial at rest and low intensities) might limit our performance and oxygen use during higher-intensity activities How a simple daily 45-minute walk with nasal breathing can transform our metabolism, stress resilience and mental clarity The three-stage stress response cycle and how breathwork provides a practical tool to interrupt our automatic reactions to daily triggers Why Brian believes finding joy in mundane tasks like washing dishes is possible when we focus on the process rather than constantly chasing outcomes Practical techniques to establish healthier boundaries with work, technology and stress – including Brian's approach to shutting off work by 4-5 pm and using red light in the evenings to improve sleep Brian is a remarkable individual, with an enviable track record of transforming the wellbeing and performance of a wide range of individuals, and this conversation is full of practical insights that you can utilise immediately to improve your health, performance and the overall quality of your life. CAUTION ADVISED: this podcast contains swearingIt is the first thing we do when we arrive in the world and the last thing we do before we leave. It happens automatically 26,000 times a day without us even having to pay any attention to it, yet breathing is one of the only autonomic systems in our body that we can control, if we choose to. But because we can do it without consciously thinking about it, we often forget about it. The reality is though, that we react to every single situation in life with our breath and we have the power to choose how we respond to any situation by controlling our breath. Amazingly, this can also affect how others will respond back to us.No one demonstrates this better than my guest on today’s conversation, Brian MacKenzie. Brian is co-founder and President of the Health and Human Performance Foundation and Creative Director at Power Speed Endurance, a company focused on optimising physical, emotional and cognitive performance. In today’s podcast, Brian shares some of his incredible experiences. Firstly, he describes how he nearly became paralysed in an accident and he also shares his unbelievable experience of voluntarily swimming with great white sharks. In both of these intense situations, Brian was able to control his response by harnessing the power of his breath. Breath is at the centre of everything Brian does and he believes that through our breath, we can all discover who we really are and rid ourselves of the mental and societal constructs that prevent us from being free.We cover so many different themes today. We discuss the concept of carbon dioxide intolerance and what it means for our biology and our emotions. But we also talk about optimising oxygen efficiency in our bodies – doing so can help every single aspect of our lives – whether we want to improve our mental health, our focus, reduce stress or even increase our sporting performance.I understand that starting a breathing practice can feel confusing – where should you begin, what method should you use, are you doing it right? Brian’s advice on this is reassuring. For him, breathwork is about giving it all a try, experimenting, learning and finding out what works for you. I think that is wonderfully freeing and exciting. I hope you enjoy this conversation as much as I did!Show notes available at drchatterjee.com/113Follow me on instagram.com/drchatterjee/Follow me on facebook.com/DrChatterjee/Follow me on twitter.com/drchatterjeeukDISCLAIMER: The content in the podcast and on this webpage is not intended to constitute or be a substitute for professional medical advice, diagnosis, or treatment. On this episode of the podcast I sit down with Emily Hightower. Emily is an incredible human who has taken a traumatic childhood and somehow figured out how to turn that trauma into pure light. We talk about her evolution through years of difficult inner alchemy, and how it all set the stage for her work with people who have experienced their own trauma, including wounded veterans around the world. I wanted to speak with Emily during this time because of what we are all experiencing, collectively. With the significant uncertainty that is our current world, comes the resulting emotional and physiological response. Emily is expert in the stress response and recently released her educational course through Power Speed Endurance called the Skill of Stress. What we learn from this conversation with Emily, is that looking outside of ourselves for the answers, is not the answer. Instead, she teaches us to dive into our animal nature and tap into those basic raw elements to address what ails us. The answers are already inside all of us. It starts with building awareness and it starts with the breath. www.thebravestlife.com/050 www.intrinsicway.com https://powerspeedendurance.com/skill-of-stress-online-course/

Brian MacKenzie doesn’t like when people tell him to “just breathe” either. So even though he’s the founder of a (great, practical, helpful) breathing app (State), you won’t hear those words coming out of his mouth. MacKenzie, the founder of Power Speed Endurance and a performance junkie, joins chief content officer Elise Loehnen to talk about tools for dealing with stress and anxiety. He explains the difference between sympathetic and parasympathetic personalities and how we can use this knowledge to plan our day in a way that avoids burnout. He explains why we don’t make good decisions when we’re stressed out (we default to habitual responses). He convinces us of the power of breath, tells us the times and places where mouth breathing is okay, and challenges us to get through a workout with our mouths shut. Learning to control our breath, MacKenzie says, helps us run our nervous system—rather than letting it run us. (For more, see The goop Podcast hub.)

This week we share our conversation with Brian Mackenzie.Brian is part of a select group of coaches who were involved in the early days of Crossfit and beyond. Brian has dabbled in ultra endurance events and worked with his a wife Erin Cafaro MacKenzie a two time Olympic Gold Medalist in Rowing on preparing for the 2012 Olympic Games in London.More recently he has become heavily involved in the importance of breathing for performance and as a byproduct health. He is working with some of the worlds leading athletes whilst researching and developing protocols to harness the benefits of breathing for boosting performance. What strikes a chord with Chris and I are the philosophical nature of Brian and others in his position. I am not sure if developing an understanding of the mechanics of breathing and its benefits creates this or simply a matter of time in the game. Most likely both.Having worked with some of the worlds best to achieve the impossible, Brian has a unique view of the world and takes this approach to his research and coaching. His interest lies in the principles of performance rather than the dogma of a specific practice, his goal is to understand just what this being (our bodies) are capable of and breathing is a direct measure of this.As we witness a boom in the number of breathing coaches around the world, it interests us that there are many different methods which people align themselves to and often as is the case with most things, believe their way is the best way. Yet there is no right way, other than following your own path combined with an understanding of the principles and this goes for breath. When we understand the principles, are open to learn and able to learn and in the same breath unlearn our old ideas, that is freedom and that freedom unlocks our potential. As always this life is a process, and you have to have skin in the game to make the progress you know you can make. There are some gems in this one, so have your notebooks ready and enjoy. You can follow Brian @_brianmackenzie and his program @powerspeedendurance
Brian Mackenzie is a world-renowned breath coach, professional tinkerer, writer and founder of Power Speed Endurance. I'm grateful to call him a friend and am excited share this deep dive on all things mind, body and breath. “Breathing is the physiological intercept to our mental state. So, if things are going haywire, I can turn back to my breathing and control the physiological reactions that are happening in my mind. If I can take a step back and do that, I'm actually fixing the entire system.” – Brian Mackenzie

Brian MacKenzie aka BMac joins Schep for episode 026 of The Coastal Athlete Program Podcast to talk about what went into writing Power Speed Endurance, breathing for success, and how to view sport as art. BMac is another one of those guests who has found himself at key pivot points within the field of human performance and if you listen close enough the common themes are starting to emerge. If you have been listening to us for a while a lot of stuff may sound familiar since Schep and BMac have little to no patience for things that detract from the goal of physical readiness. Train like your life depends on it because ultimately that is in fact the case. Brian Mackenzie is an expert in the development and application of custom protocols to optimize human health and performance. His work harnesses and integrates respiratory, movement, strength and endurance-based training approaches to elicit unprecedented positive results. His protocols have been used to accelerate and raise both mental and physical performance in world-class Olympic and professional athletes, top exceutives, and elite military operators, as well as to improve the health for people suffering from various chronic illnesses. Everyday people have also used Brian's tools to reduce pathologic stress and to vastly heighten their mental and physical well being and performance. A highly unique feature of Brian's approach is that he voluntarily and repeatedly subjects his protocols to rigorous 3rd party scientific testing, re-testing and improvement, at top institutions including Stanford University School of Medicine, Florida A&M University and The Center for Sports Performance. Few, if any, experts directly seek to apply unbiased laboratory and field testing to their craft as Mackenzie does. Brian is himself a highly accomplished athlete. He completed the Ironman (Canada, 2004), completed both the The Western States 100 (2006) mile and The Angeles Crest 100 (2007) mile runs using adapted training protocols he developed to avoid injury and fatigue. Also a prolific writer, Brian co-authored the book Power Speed Endurance, The New York Times Best Seller UnBreakable Runner, and UnPlugged, which assesses the integration of emergent technology and human performance. His programs have been featured in Outside Magazine, Men's Health, Runners World, Triathlete Magazine, Men's Journal, ESPN Rise, as well as periodicals such as The Economist. Brian and his protocols have been featured in 4 of Timothy Ferriss' New York Times bestselling books including: “The 4-Hour Body” and “Tools of Titans”. Brian MacKenzie's programs have been taught at more than 400 seminars worldwide and are used by thousands of athletes ranging from beginners to elite medalists and record holders via his “Power, Speed, Endurance” platform and by private consultation. Currently, Brian is the Creative Director at Power Speed Endurance a company focused on the optimization of human performance, corporate performance and the delivery of science based protocols to optimize physical, emotional and cognitive performance for health. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/cappodcast/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/cappodcast/support

Danny is also a coach with Power Speed Endurance on the Art of Breath staff.Danny has always been one to push the envelope in anything he pursues. Breathing is the physiological intercept to our mental state. So, if things are going haywire, I can turn back to my breathing and control the physiological reactions that are happening in my mind. If I can take a step back and do that, I'm actually fixing the entire system. - Brian Mackenzie How can you enhance your health through nostril breathing versus breathing through the mouth? Is technology a crutch to how you eat, move, and sleep? JOIN THE FACEBOOK GROUP | REVIEW THIS PODCAST 20% OFF ORGANIFI - USE CODE: WELLNESSFORCE On Wellness Force Radio episode 203, the mind behind The Art of the Breath Clinics, Co-Founder of Power Speed, Endurance, and Co-Author of Unplugged, Brian Mackenzie, shares why breathing is a by-product of what's going on in the brain, how to be more mindful of technology use, and how we can change our state of mind at any moment we choose. Discover the process of rewiring the subconscious mind through conscious training, breathwork, and heightened awareness. "There's an integrative piece in the body that breathing is a by-product of what's going on in the brain. Our emotions, pain, or what we're cognitively thinking is actually our respiration rate if we're not consciously aware." - @brianmackenzie http://bit.ly/wfpodcast The Art of Breath Are you ready for the tools that will change your game? Sign up now to participate in an upcoming The Art of Breath clinic. In less than a day you can learn the exact tools to perform better, manage stress & improve health. Imagine being able to mix it with the big dogs in a workout and not get gassed. Imagine being able to reduce your stress in less than 10 minutes in the comfort of your own home or at your work desk. Imagine being able to maximize your Oxygen usage to become a fatigue resistant machine. You can do all this. But you need the tools. That is where the Art of Breath comes in. At an Art of Breath clinic, you will learn: Why you should breathe through your nose during your training so you can go harder and faster for longer. What the diaphragm is and what it does because it may be the most important muscle you’re not using. How to increase your tolerance to carbon dioxide because it is the key to accessing your fuel stores. How to mobilize your upper back so you can use your lungs to their fullest. How your breath is the key to your mental state so that you can manage the stress of everyday life. How to use breath work into training sessions so that you, or your clients, can enjoy the power of the breath. Listen To Episode 203 As Brian Mackenzie Uncovers: What he is currently working on with breathwork and the mind. How to be more mindful of technology use. How we can change our state of mind at any moment we choose. Why we're almost using technology as a crutch for our natural sensory units. How to use non-meditative methods to enhance your state of mind. The process of rewiring the subconscious mind through conscious training and heighten awareness. How we can alter our minds in the present moment in order to re-focus on the task at hand. A common thread between improper breathing and poor performance. The concept that everything is everything and it all can be integrable to the point where anything from breathing to posture affects who we are. Why technology cannot ultimately replace our internal awareness. His thoughts on mouth taping and whether it's beneficial or not. How he trained himself to no longer breathe through the mouth as he slept. Cueing nostril breath practices vs. breathing through the mouth and when one is more appropriate than the other for high performance What you can gain and learn from training yourself to only breathe through the nostrils. The fact that the yoga world has been focusing on breathing solely through the nostrils for ages. Power Quotes From The Show "Meditation is a practice that you put into play that becomes a part of what you're doing. I can breathe, visualize, or focus on some sounds. We need to make these changes in the moment so that we can refocus on the task at hand." - @brianmackenzie http://bit.ly/wfpodcast "By design, we want comfort and we want life to be easy. Just look at the world we live in today. It's so easy today to get food or whatever we want at any given moment but go back a hundred years and it wasn't possible. I'm not saying there's anything wrong with it but we get so focused on what is making things easy and comfortable that we forget that the only reason we make change is because of discomfort. Getting caught in that, we get afraid of stepping outside our comfort complex of technology." - Brian Mackenzie "I daily catch myself spending too much time on my phone but I know what I need to do as a result of that. So, if I've been on my phone for too long, I know I need to take a visual break because my visual system actually works with my physiology and my entire body reacts. In those situations, I do a breathing pattern, look 20 feet away from me in the distance, listen to music, or go outside to easily change what I'm doing for a few minutes to instantly improve how I feel." - Brian Mackenzie "Meditation is a practice that you put into play that becomes a part of what you're doing, but I can breathe, look at my visual system, or focus in on some sounds. I can do a lot of things in the moment and this is what we're really trying to teach. We want to be able to make these changes in the moment so that I can focus on what I need to or be open to what I need to do." - Brian Mackenzie "Technology is only being used to get us back to what it is that we're capable of actually doing ourselves. Technology is going to help and allow us to do a lot more, but how far are we removing ourselves from these basic physiological responses? Technologically is going to allow us to get back to that place." - Brian Mackenzie "Everybody has a response to fear. Even Navy SEALS have the exact same response that you and I have and these are the supposed to be the people who aren't afraid of anything, but that's not true; we're all the same and we all have the same reaction. It's about how fast they come back to their baseline. Most of us have a great jolt of fear and then it takes awhile to come back down or we need to be in that state of anxiety or sympathy for a longer period of time. That's where our breathing is playing the biggest role." - Brian Mackenzie Links From Today's Show Brian Mackenzie Facebook Twitter Instagram YouTube LinkedIn The Art of Breath Power Speed Endurance Unplugged Unbreakable Runner Power Speed ENDURANCE How to Be Mindful When You Have Seasonal Allergies Brian Mackenzie on the Effects of Breathing on Recovery Brian MacKenzie on the Benefits of Nasal Breathing, Downregulation & More! This week we welcome to the show Brian MacKenzie. He is a human performance and movement specialist. He is the innovator of the endurance, strength and conditioning paradigm. He has studied performance and movement since 2001 with altitude, hypoxia, breathing mechanics & methods, along with heat and cold exposure. He has spent a lot of his time training and understanding in and around the water, and desert. He has participated in Ironman (Canada 2004), and has run the Western States 100 and the Angeles Crest 100 mile endurance runs. He co-authored the books Power Speed Endurance, and The New York Times Best Seller UnBreakable Runner. Questions we ask in this episode: When it comes to training, I’ve heard you say quality vs quantity and methods are many, principles are few, please explain? What areas of exercise modalities would you encourage the weekend warrior who wants a rounded approach to their health, movement and longevity? You free dived with Great White Sharks. Why? Where does your passion for breathwork come from? You're currently collaborating with Stanford University's Neuroscience Dept. on how breath can influence our 'state', what have you discovered? I was intrigued by your book Unplugged, what can the reader expect from this? And this week, our fantastic guest is Brian Mackenzie, who is a human performance and movement specialist. Not only that, he's a top bloke and a lot of fun and just got a stack of wisdom and experience behind him, so it was great to have him on the show today. He's studied performance and movement since 2001 with altitude, hypoxia, breathing mechanics, methods along with heat and cold exposure as well. And we also dive into his more recent project, The Art of Breath, which of course I'm pretty passionate about as well. We even get into his book, Unplugged, and why he recently free-dived without a cage with great white sharks as well, which just blew my mind. So it's all in there. I don't care what you do. There's nuggets of wisdom for everyone in this podcast, and I have no doubt you're going to enjoy. And I also want to mention, don't forget guys, we are offering all the podcast listeners a 15% discount on any of our 180 Nutrition products at the moment. All you have to do is go back to the shopping cart and enter the discount code 180 podcast and you can receive a 15% discount. [00:01:30] Yeah, what I will mention as well is check out our new organic hemp blend protein as well, guys. It is phenomenal. We literally just launched it this week, and the laws have been changing around hemp. We've been excited to bring this protein to the marketplace as well, cause it's an all plant-based protein, and personally, I'm in love with it at the moment. Anyway, you can check that out as well, and the discount code applies for that too. Anyway, let's go over to Brian McKenzie. Enjoy! [00:02:00] Hi, this is Guy Lawrence. I'm joined with Stuart Cook, as always. Good morning, Stu. Stu Hello mate! Guy And our awesome guest today is Brian Mackenzie. Brian, welcome to the show, dude. Brian Thanks for having me, boys. Pleasure. Guy It's been a long time coming. Your name has popped up on different views and podcasts over the last 12 months at least. So it's like oh, we gotta get Brian on the show. So yeah, very appreciative of your time, mate. Brian Yeah, absolutely. Guy So we have a question we ask everyone when we kick off, and that is, "If a stranger stopped you on the street and asked you what you did for a living, what would you say? Brian I don't know. Stu Don't speak to strangers. Brian [00:03:30] Yeah. Literally I'd say, "I don't know." I could equate doing yard work to that's part of my job or working out, that's part of my job, or screwing around with breathing or screwing around with a kettlebell or whatever, or walking my dogs. That's part of work, you know? It literally is, because I'm trying to understand things, connect dots, and make things happen in a way that ... you know I've been able to ... I do believe I'm fortunate, but I do believe that I've kept something that a lot of people just really ditch and think that they gotta get in, like "I gotta get a job," which I understand that. I've played that game, but I've remained curious enough to be able to develop things that have allowed me to do what it is I really want to do. http://180nutrition.com.au/180-tv/brian-mackenzie-interview/

Welcome to another episode of the Mindset Rx’d Series of The Alpha Movement Podcast. On today’s show, I’m joined by Erin Mackenzie aka Erin Carafo. Erin was bought to my attention when her husband, Brian Mackenzie (of Power Speed Endurance, XPT and now Unplugged fame) mentioned in passing that “no one can out suffer her”. Erin rowed for the United States and won Olympic Gold Medals in Beijing and London. As well as talking about embracing intensity and the techniques Erin used, we also discuss how to deal with the transition of elite athlete to, well, not being an elite athlete. On top of this, Erin talks through her approach to hardship. It’s great to hear from someone who has competed at such a high level and who has a clear perspective. What I find super interesting is that Erin says she never absolutely loved rowing, but realised she was good at it. Super enjoyable show all round.
You know that terrible feeling during a workout where your heart rate is out of control, you breathing is shallow and rapid and you feel like you are going to hyperventilate? What if there was a secret "hack" to getting around that? On Episode 206 of the Doc and Jock Podcast we are joined by the legendary Rob Wilson (for the 5th time) to talk about The Art Of Breathing during a CrossFit/high intensity workout. Just like most other things we do in the gym setting their is an optimal way to breath during exercise and those who master it have a distinct advantage over their competitions. Rob Wilson comes from a formal education in manual therapy with 15+ years of experience as both a practitioner and teacher. He resides in Virginia Beach, VA with his wife Thomi where they own and operate CrossFit Virginia Beach. In addition to working with the Power Speed Endurance team Rob is also a member of the world renowned MobilityWod staff under the direction of Dr. Kelly Starrett. Rob’s main sport background is youth martial arts including Jeet Kune Do (the philosophies of Bruce Lee), Judo, Muay Thai, and Maphiliindo Silat and Kali. Like many coastal kids Rob grew up surfing and skating as well and developed an affinity for the ocean and Nature at an early age. Rob Wilson is a passionate teacher to the core. Throughout the course of his career as a therapist one thing became abundantly clear; it’s better to teach a person to fish. Without education athletes are left to unknowingly repeat patterns of behavior that may not be pursuant to the actual desired outcome. That is to say the best remedy is often understanding. Rob’s journey is about developing a deeper understanding of human performance to better serve those who wish to actualize their potential. On today's episode, I am joined by Brian Mackenzie of Power Speed Endurance, XPT, and now his new book, Unplugged which he has co-written with friend of the show, Dr. Andy Galpin. Today is all about mastering presence in your training. In intro'd Brian on the last episode we did together which was in the first series of The Alpha Movement Podcast so if you are unsure of his work (somehow!) check out episode 26 first. Too often in life and in training we are distracted by tech. It's a massive problem in performance and health in general. We discuss the ways around this, as well as going deeper into the subject on a few different levels. This is a conversation I could have spent another 2 or 3 hours on. It's fascinating.
Raph is joined by Power Speed Endurance team Brian and Rob to talk about breathing and performance. The breath is a powerful tool which only a few master coaches know how to utilise for performance benefits. This episode they bust myths around training masks, talk physiology and also dive into the recovery benefits from proper breath work.
In this episode I speak with Jason Donaldson. We discuss Jason's time in the West Australian Police Force and how he managed to stay fit, healthy and strong whilst working shiftwork. These days, Jason works with Power Speed Endurance and with a range of athletes as the online Cell Coach. The Art of Breath Clinich (From the Power Speed and Endurance webpage - http://powerspeedendurance.com/event/georgia-art-of-breath-clinic/) If we don’t breathe, we die. Although we all know this simple fact breathing remains the most underutilized component of health and human performance. The Art of Breath (AoB) is a program developed to give participants an experience based understanding of how breathing can affect both short term performance and long term health. Through a variety of simple and effective teaching tools we will help illuminate this powerful practice and help you grab this low hanging fruit. The AoB purpose is to help facilitate a deeper understanding of the physiological process so that each person can ultimately tailor their own breath practice to his or her individual needs. We have a hard working and knowledgable personal trainer with us today. His name is Guy Petruzzelli. We will be talking about How to get back into the game to become the your healthiest. As a 43 year old professional duathlete, who, at the age of 20, found a real passion for multi-sport, was forced to take some time away. I was hit by a car in 1996, leaving me rather injured and finding a comeback difficult. So I finished law school, passed the Illinois Bar exam and thought my time in the sport was over. In 2002, I was fortunate to have some close friends, who were concerned about my physical state, encourage me to get back into the sport. It wasn’t easy, but I came back to it with more desire, drive and passion. I worked hard under the coaching supervision of the great Jennifer Garrison, and in 2008 I was offered an opportunity to turn professional. It was a dream come true. I left law in 2009 to pursue my dream of being a professional multisport athlete and I have been blessed with the opportunity to do more with the sport, and meet a ton of great people along the way. As the 2010 season started to heat up in June, I was out for a training ride and once again, hit by a car. This time, I was left with a broken right collarbone and 3 broken ribs. My doctor insisted that even with surgery, I would miss the remainder of the season and would most likely not even be able to train hard until the start of 2011. I refused to believe that I would be limited for that long. So right after surgery I went to see Nate Aye and John Conquest at Crossfit DuPage. I was very honest about my goals as an athlete and the desire to be in the top tier of pro multisport athletes in 2011. They were very honest in turn, and made it clear – my goals were attainable, but it would take hard work and an open mind. From that day forward, I never looked back. A short 6 weeks later I met someone I knew would be a friend for life. Someone who was as driven as I was, constantly challenging the norm, and believed that working smart was the key to success in multisport. Brian McKenzie from Crossfit Endurance opened my eyes to even more change to my training methods, breaking down old school endurance training ideology, improving my running form, and changing my mentality as how I approach training and racing. I was skeptical for the first hour I heard him talk, and then I watched as in less than 48 hours, I had improved my running efficiency by 53%. I was a believer. With Brian’s help, I was able to achieve 2 things in less than 5 weeks – continue to speed up my healing process, and improve fitness. When I went to see my doctor at week 9 post-surgery, the x-rays showed 90% bone growth, and I was cleared to race duathlons. But the most amazing part – my 5K time dropped, my LT wattage on the bike increased by 33% and I was 8 lbs. lighter than pre-accident. This wasn’t by accident; this was due to following Crossfit Strength and Crossfit Endurance principles. Best part, I’m still improving. To spread the word of my recovery and passion, I was the focus of a Triathlete Magazine article in the February 2011 edition, written by TJ Murphy. I was then added to the book written by Brian MacKenzie in November 2012 – “Power, Speed, Endurance, a skill based approach to endurance training”, and featured in Chris Solomon’s article in the January 2013 issue of Outside Magazine, where Chris chronicles his use of Crossfit Endurance to train for a marathon. To prove that I practice what I preach, I’ve been working with Cody Burhardt, head coach at Power Speed Endurance, to help me reach my current world rank of 11th in Duathlon. I’ve also appeared on the podcast www.athleteologist.com – episode 8,where I was able to share my story. facebook.com/guypetruzzelli twitter,com/guypetruzzelli instagram.com/guypetruzzelli www.guypetruzzelli.blogspot.com For additional podcast from Healthy Living With Eric Su visit www.ericwsu.com/podcasts. You’re breathing anyway, so why not be better at it! It’s really the most fundamental element of your physical existence. On this Friday Short Coach Joe catches up with Rob Wilson. Rob is a Mobility Wod staffer, Co Owns CrossFit Virginia Beach with his snake charming wife, and is currently working on a collaboration with Brian MacKenzie on breathing. Sit back, pull out a notebook and grab the basics on breathing. In this short you will learn: How Brian and Rob hooked up and began developing Art of Breath Why breathing is so paramount to performance. The function of the Autonomic Nervous System and its two parts; sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems. What is the low hanging fruit for most dysfunctional breathers. Position equals strength in all we do, even breathing. What will this course look like in the group setting. If we have wet your whistle and raised your curiosity, wait we have more. Below you’ll find a few links to investigate the curious habit of breathing, a few social media post from Brian and Rob on breathing, and Rob’s email address if your into contacting him the old fashion way! Lastly gang, be on the lookout for a future talk with the entire gang, Danny, Joe, Brian and Rob about the Art of Breath! It's week five of the Champion's Mindset series and I am talking to Erin Cafaro MacKenzie. She is a two-time Olympic Gold Medalist in rowing and she has podiumed at every World Championship rowing competition that she has competed in – a total of six World Championship Gold Medals and two Bronze Medals. Erin and her husband currently run Power Speed Endurance, a sports-specific training program dedicated to improving skill, performance, fitness and overall potential. Erin's definition of the Champion's Mindset has evolved over the years. At first, it was related to an indomitable spirit – the “X factor” of just going. While that may be a common definition, Erin believes the Champion's Mindset is something that is more at peace, as opposed to forceful. “A champion is someone who is doing it not to beat someone else – it's for them.” At Power Speed Endurance, Erin and her husband are trying to figure out an equation for each sport to use speed as a monitor for skill. In most monostructural (or endurance) sports – like running, rowing and even skateboarding – the athlete's balance of friction and connection dictates the speed at which they can perform tasks, and the ability to perform those tasks relates directly to an athlete's skill. We've discussed Grit a lot during the Champion's Mindset series, and it's an idea that Erin has been exploring as well. Angela Duckworth has a fantastic TED Talk and book on the subject, but there is also a downside to Grit. Too much friction prevents us from realizing our fullest potential, but just the right amount of friction can propel us to amazing heights. It's rare for someone to make the Olympics once, let alone twice, and it's even more difficult than you might imagine when you consider the adversity and setbacks an intensive athlete can experience. In 2011, a month before the World Championships, Erin broke two ribs; one on the right and one on the left. It was hard for her to stay sane at the time, but, in hindsight, the break gave her perspective on what it means to be a champion. “If everything was going great and came easily, I probably wouldn't take as much interest in it.” After the 2012 Olympics, Erin had to develop a different perspective on fulfillment. Her whole adult life leading up to that was devoted to training and pursuing the win, and then she thoroughly accomplished that. Experiencing depression after a period of great accomplishment or during a big transition is common, and this is a good time to turn to your tribe for support. “Pain is one of our greatest teachers” Erin's ability to endure struggle actually became an obstacle at times, because having a high pain threshold also means having a low ability to evolve and to change. “When it comes to everyday life and you have painful thoughts, and you're just sitting on them versus actually dealing with them or doing something different so that they don't reoccur, then that's when it's pretty un-functional.” The greatest lesson that Erin has learned as an athlete is that being a champion is not about being the superstar – it's about being able to get the best out of your teammates. She is trying to apply this lesson by creating a platform for Power Speed Endurance coaches to share their strengths, reach more athletes and thrive. I appreciate Erin's vulnerability and authenticity on this week's episode, because it shows that even the greatest champions experience struggle and need help picking themselves back up. Communities and adversity can be really powerful tools to help us grow. I first learned about Brian MacKenzie when I was training for my first Ironman’s and I read his books about endurance and mobility and he changed my concepts about what was possible with running. Basically, pounding out miles just doesn’t work as you get older (and when younger too). But this doesn’t apply to just running…… Brian applies exponential training approaches to optimize human performance; he relentlessly challenges conventions and tests assumptions. Recently I was reacquainted with Brian’s work when I started training with Wim Hof's cold and breathing methods and was looking to see who else was interested in them….. So I reached out to ask him on the show. Major take – aways from this episode are: How you can change anything with 10 breaths. Using breathing techniques to amplify, deepen and quicken meditation benefits. The power of breath work to stabilize mood regulation and reactive behavior patterns. Co2 adaptation + Integrating breathing, ice and heat. How to activate the Vagus nerve. Importance of diaphramatic breathing. Using breathing to access Flow States. Proper breathing technique for sport, business and life. Mobility – the importance of keeping tissue supple. Eating principles vs fads to follow that Brian coaches people on related to a) Vegetables; b)humanely treated animal protein (not stressed); c) High quality fats. The impact of a) sugar; b) processed foods; c) hydration; d) high quality breads. Must read and listen to Netflix video by Mike Pollan, “Cooked” and In Defense of Food – An Eaters Manifesto. Taking personal responsibility of your health by engaging your doctor. Benefits of getting your genetics tested (Wellness fx). Dumbing down technology so that you can feel again. Mike Rowe on the importance of working opportunities not passion. I have linked up all the show notes on redzonetech.net/podcast where you can get access to Brian’s blog publications. Brian is the co-author of an epic textbook on training titled Power, Speed, Endurance , and the New York Times bestseller, Unbreakable Runner. As the founder of the CrossFit Endurance movement, Brian gained notoriety for challenging the dated conventional endurance wisdom of a mileage obsessed, “more is better” approach. Brian’s comprehensive program blending traditional aerobic mileage with varied forms of explosive strength training, flexibility/mobility work (he’s a close associate of MobilityWOD.com and Becoming a Supple Leopard author Dr. Kelly Starrett), breath work and recovery has busted the boundaries and barriers of the old school approach. Brian has occasionally faced challenges and controversy by those favoring status quo. Consider this salacious magazine article title from Outside magazine in 2013: “Brian MacKenzie's Controversial New Approach to Marathon Training: The mastermind behind CrossFit Endurance says the best way to train for a marathon is to run less and torture yourself more in the gym.” Well, it’s not nearly as simple and crude as the frequently referenced juxtaposition of “quantity versus quality” suggests. It’s now becoming clear that chronic cardio is not only ineffective but can also destroy your health. Furthermore, it’s also evident that endurance athletes are deficient in many areas of general fitness, especially preserving efficient technique as they become fatigued. If your low back and hip flexors get cooked at mile 20 of a marathon (because, for argument’s sake, that’s a butt-long way and you’ve perhaps never run further than that in training), some of the energy your cardiovascular machine is still able to produce for the final six-mile slog is wasted. Instead of maintaining a balanced center of gravity and generative efficient explosive force with each stride, you center of gravity caves and you collapse a bit into the ground on each stride. This is where the explosive training goes in. Loading a squat bar with weight, running sprints or performing any other explosive efforts is in many respects simulating what happens to your body at mile 20, but without having to exhaust yourself by running the first 20 miles in training before obtaining that desired breakthrough adaptation. Explosive work is not an endurance “hack” (you will never hear Brad use that word on this show or in life, ever). Rather, it’s adding a critically important training modality to your game in order to best prepare your body for daunting competitive challenges without falling apart. With Brian passionately advocating to expand our training consciousness, he has come off as an intense guy, which he is. After all, that’s him sprinting in Tim Ferriss’s epic Four Hour Body book trailer and his thumbnail image with his individual finger tattoos spelling “U-N-S-C-A-R-E-D.” What was cool in meeting Brian person was how thoughtful and chill he is. The conversation went off into the metaphysical and reflective direction instead of just going into his boiler plate PowerSpeedEndurance message. Brian starts by discussing the perspective he has gained from his recent terrible accident, surgery, and recovery process, gives a refreshingly expanded perspective of the dated and oversimplified quality versus quantity debate, countering the “more is better” mentality with the priceless maxim, “Better is Better.” Perhaps the best takeaway from the show is Brian’s emphasis that the next evolution in human performance will come in the area of recovery, and complementary practices such as breathing, cold therapy, and heat therapy, of which he is super focused on these days.
