He is also a (CTR) with US Naval Special Warfare where he works on Navy SEALs in Coronado, CA. Today's book is about the impossible, but it starts with the invisible. Over the four decades, an unlikely collection of men and women have pushed human performance farther and faster than at any other point in the 150,000-year history of our species. In this evolutionary eyeblink, they have completely redefined the limits of the possible. But here's the stranger part: this unprecedented flowering of human potential has taken place in plain sight, occasionally with millions of people watching–yet almost no one has noticed. Today's guest will explain why, he is a friend of the show and author of multiple titles and the focus of today's episode is “The Rise of Superman: Decoding the Science of Ultimate Human Performance”, Steven Kotler, welcome. In this installment of Physical Friday, I go over the ways that I was able to progress towards the full lie back quad stretch. This is one of the more difficult stretches from Joe Hippensteel's Ultimate Human Performance. Achieving the full lie back position was very difficult for me but the work was worth it as my knee pain from Patellar tendinitis has disappeared. We can get very tight in the quads and hip flexors from sitting too much. This stretch has helped me to get back to running and feeling my best. For additional notes and resources check out Douglas’ website.ESCAPE: Lesson 2 of 4.Douglas Jacoby and Steve Brand have joined forces to teach a series called ESCAPE. Steve Brand is a professional counselor and expert on addictive behaviors. Here's the provisional plan:The psychology and neurochemistry of pain, escape, and addiction. Focus: marijuana, alcohol, pain medication.Alternate fictional reality. Focus: movies, novels, worlds of gaming, TV.Fantasy proxy relationships. Focus: pornography.Computer and internet behaviors. Focus: gambling, shopping, surfing, smartphones. The importance of not being conformed to the world (Romans 12:2), or falling prey to the many tempting avenues of "escape".A friend writes in with a pertinent quote:"Technology offers even more examples. Video-game players get into flow so frequently that Csikszentmihalyi’s ideas have become the most widely accepted theoretical framework for explaining the lure of the joystick. Studies have shown that the amount of flow generated by a video game directly correlates to everything from player engagement to overall product success. In fact, as Dr. Erik Gregory, the executive director of the Media Psychology Research Center, wrote in 2007: 'Placing players in flow is the key to video gaming’s universal appeal.'Meanwhile, for Internet surfers, researchers have found flow the secret ingredient to almost every aspect of online experience. Both website slipperiness (the ease with which we enter and exit an online experience) and website stickiness (how certain sites hold our attention) are influenced by the state. Researchers at Vanderbilt University have found that from the marketing side of this coin, online flow experiences attract customers, mitigate price sensitivity, and positively influence subsequent buying behaviors."- Kotler, Steven (2014-03-04). In this episode, our conversation tapped into Kristin Weber's role as business owner, mom, and world-class athlete. We talked a lot about her history and how her parents, close friends, and educational experiences shaped and supported her interests from a very early age, enabling her to follow her passions and turn them into a successful and fulfilling life. We dove into some of the habits and behaviors that have allowed her to flourish in both business and athletics and that have helped her cultivate a synergistic lifestyle that facilitates both. Perhaps most importantly, Kristin gave us insight into living a life of synergy, which allows her to still be the kind of parent she wants to be, which I think she would say is ultimately her greatest accomplishment. What's Kristin's secret sauce for flourishing in all three of these important areas? A little bit of focus on the “me,” or her self-care, and a heck of a lot of support from the “we,” her community of close friends and family. Something I think any busy parent or top performer can relate to. About our Guest: Shipley alumna Kristin Gustafson Weber '90 has won two U.S. national titles and medaled three times in the Masters world championships of cyclocross (a multilap off-road bike race that often involves inclement weather and horrible riding conditions). They also talk about how you can manage the external factors that affect your career journey above all else, so tune in. KEY TAKEAWAYS When Ben saw that everyone around him was better in what he does (i.e. wrestling), he stepped up his game. Knowing just the basic styles won't even give him a podium finish, so he learned everything that he could possibly learn. He wanted to win every wrestling match and be at par with the pros. Most likely, there's someone out there who has been in the same (or similar) situation as you. It would be such a waste on your time if you try to solve things on your own. Observe and learn from other people's experience (and mistakes). In this way, we avoid setbacks and grow exponentially. There will always be a fear of failure—it's part of being a human. So, how do we cope? Acknowledge that it will happen, plan better, and get thrilled of whatever the results are. When asked about he deals with critics, bashers, and naysayers, Ben advises showing people some love. He also adds that during a child's formative years, it's best that parents and guardians give them the push they need. They should be told about how immense can their future be, how great can they be, when they put their knowledge and capabilities to good use. BEST MOMENTS “Just because something is done in a certain way, it doesn't mean it's the best way to do it.” “Wrestling is getting so much better, so much faster.” “The greatest reward comes with the greatest risk.” VALUABLE RESOURCES Antifragile: Things That Gain From Disorder by Nassim Nicholas Taleb | Amazon https://www.amazon.com/Antifragile-Things-That-Disorder-Incerto/dp/0812979680 Win Bigly: Persuasion in a World Where Facts Don't Matter by Scott Adams | Amazon https://www.amazon.com/Win-Bigly-Persuasion-World-Matter/dp/0735219710 Loserthink: How Untrained Brains Are Ruining America by Scott Adams | Amazon https://www.amazon.com/Loserthink-Untrained-Brains-Ruining-America/dp/0593083520 Stealing Fire: How Silicon Valley, the Navy SEALs, and Maverick Scientists Are Revolutionizing the Way We Live and Work by Steven Kotler | Amazon https://www.amazon.com/Stealing-Fire-Maverick-Scientists-Revolutionizing/dp/0062429655 The Rise of Superman: Decoding the Science of Ultimate Human Performance by Steven Kotler | Amazon https://www.amazon.com/Rise-Superman-Decoding-Ultimate-Performance/dp/1477800832 The Culture Code: The Secrets of Highly Successful Groups by Daniel Coyle | Amazon https://www.amazon.com/Culture-Code-Secrets-Highly-Successful/dp/0525492461 ABOUT THE GUEST Ben Askren is a retired professional MMA and a former Olympic wrestler. I’m going to take a wild guess that you already know that sleep affects how well you function. You’re also probably aware that sleep quality is part of the equation (not just quantity). But did you realize that what time of day you go to bed, what you do for the two hours leading up to that, and what you do when you wake up have a big impact on your sleep? Because I’m obsessed with learning how to optimize everything for greatness that I can, I’ve started paying more attention to the little habits in my life that can have big results. So when I heard about today’s guest on The School of Greatness, Shawn Stevenson, I knew I had to get him on the show. Shawn is not only a sleep expert and best-selling author, but he has spent the last ten plus years studying how to optimize all parts of your daily routine to help you function at maximum capacity. This week, Dan Neumann is joined by Joseph Carella — a Senior Instructor and Executive Coach of the Eckerd College Leadership Development Institute in St. Petersburg, Florida. Joseph is also a practicing psychologist and Consulting Psychologist for the Orlando Magic NBA Team and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, as well as the Senior Consultant for AvoLead, and the Principal Owner for Carella & Associates. In this episode, Dan and Joseph discuss the ways that an effective leader coaches. Joseph highlights the differences between professional coaching and executive coaching, real-life examples from his work, what it means to hold somebody accountable, how good leaders can set up a positive environment to get the most out of their team, and how to provide corrective feedback. Joseph also provides his insights around both positive and corrective reinforcement through coaching and when you should hold yourself accountable as a leader when it comes to the “underperformers” on your team. Key Takeaways What good leaders should do (and how they can hold their team accountable): Set the expectations for performance Provide instruction, guidance, and support Positively enforce correct performance Let the person know immediately when they’re not performing up to par and provide corrective actions Help your team with skill acquisitions Joseph’s insights around both positive and corrective reinforcement through coaching: Hold yourself accountable as a leader for creating an environment for your whole team to perform at their best Review your ideas around the traits you consider to be that of an underperformer (i.e. are they really an underperformer or are they just not matching your expectations?) Consider how you’re interacting with an “underperformer” — are you only identifying their weaknesses thus creating a demotivating environment? As a leader, find ways to understand your people and engage with them If there is truly a performance gap, identify the behaviors that are problematic and the impact that they have on the task at hand, and then allow that person to tell their story, and afterward ask how they’re going to effect this change Mentioned in this Episode: Joseph Carella’s Bio Eckerd College Leadership Development Institute AvoLead Carella & Associates Agile Coaches’ Corner Ep. 25: “Talking Feedback with Christy Erbeck” Crucial Conversations: Tools for Talking When Stakes Are High, by Kerry Patterson, Joseph Grenny, Ron McMillan, and Al Switzler Agile Coaches’ Corner Ep. 23: “Scrum and Empirical Process Control with Sam Falco” Adapt Framework SBI Model Painless Performance Conversations: A Practical Approach to Critical Day-to-Day Workplace Discussions, by Marnie E. This episode is brought to you by baseballcloud. iTunes Stitcher Google Play Spotify Summary: In this episode of Ahead of the Curve, I welcome Steve Johnson, Founder/CEO of LegKickNation. We discuss Steve’s method of rejecting the model of the ‘teacher king’ in order to foster a curiosity-provoking learning environment in which students take responsibility for their own progress, as well as how he teaches methods to reach the state of ‘flow’. We also discuss the practical details of teaching in this new mode and ways to apply them to baseball.Show Notes: Guest: Steve Johnson, teacher and coach, Team Invictus A love of learning brought Steve to teaching as well as coaching “Teacher King” Traditional compartmentalized teaching a flawed system Without underlying, no purpose or autonomy Leaning on teachers too much diminishes student accountability The importance of curiosity How do we foster curiosity? Community-based instruction facility Challenging kids in diverse areas, not just athletics Allowed to learn from failures as well as success Instructors serve as “bumpers in bowling alley”; helping and guiding but not controlling everything a kid is doing How to create an environment where kids can be creative More formal games these days, but less unstructured play has negative consequences The importance of kids becoming independent problem-solvers Flow: being ‘in the zone’, a sense of timelessness and selflessness Easier to achieve it in other sports because of the pace of baseball Maintaining singular focus Processing information in the box hampers performance Not being hung up on failures or self-consciousness Micro-flow vs Macro-flow Assessment of student athlete Physical, collecting data, seeing how kids learn and react How does a student learn without the authority of the ‘teacher king’? The learning goals come from the kids How to have kids express their desire honestly? Not having Mom and Dad around tends to help Establishing a rapport Advice for those wanting to open a similar facility? Membership vs per lesson model Vision of better you rather than just better ball player Culture of holistic learning rather than focus solely on baseball LegkickNation How to allow a student to own their own learning? Knowing when to address something and when to back off A hands off approach allows kids to make their own learning decisions and goals Some kids need more direction than others Techniques to grow the ability to flow The influence and importance of body language and psychology on performance Physical and Mental Coaching Constraints How to clean up a negative attack angle Using data, video External cues The possibilities of applying educationally-based books to athletics education 3 Key Points: A teaching model not reliant on the ‘teacher king’ allows students to learn in a more profound way that gives them a deeper sense of responsibility for their own progress. Encouraging kids’ natural curiosity is a fundamental part of helping them learn. A teaching approach that focuses on flow and problem-solving in general can positively affect a student’s growth throughout their life, as well as in baseball. Tweetable Quotes: “To me, to rely on a singular voice [in the classroom] is handcuffing the kids growth.” - Steve Johnson (6:20) “As a teacher, I take offense a lot of times, to other people trying to handcuff a kids curiosity, because it is that curiosity which leads to growth.” - Steve Johnson (7:00) “The more he misses the more he’s going to learn from his failure, and the more he crushes baseball the more he’s going to learn from his successes.” - Steve Johnson (9:40) “We’re trying to create an environment where kids can be creative; to succeed both inside and outside of baseball you need to be creative, an elite level problem-solver.” - Steve Johnson (13:20) “The biggest thing for me is seeing how the kids learns and how the kid reacts to different things. I’m a big proponent of word association. One of the first questions I ask a kid is what’s the first word that comes to your mind when I say ‘hit it’. Ordinarily the kid will give me a whole bunch of information based on his answer. So if I say what’s the first word that comes to your mind when I say ‘hit it’ and the kid says “Don’t strike out”, or “Foul balls”, anything that has a negative connotation to it, I know right away that he’s been through the system. That’s one of the things I always look for, getting a gauge on how this kid is going to learn and how this kid is going to deal with being in an environment where there is no ‘teacher king’, where we’re all on the same level.” - Steve Johnson (29:40) “Yes, I’m an instructor if you will, or I own the facility, but I’m right there with you, we’re all trying to figure it out together, so it’s not me over you.” - Steve Johnson (30:35) “I think most people want to be part of something bigger than just the sport of baseball. I think most people want to be part of a community in which you’re like minded student athletes with caring instructors who are there for your best interests.” - Steve Johnson (39:20) “We’re trying to create better learners, better problem solvers, and a by-product of that is that we’ve been able to create monsters.” - Steve Johnson (40:05) Resources Mentioned: CompeteAcademy.com #LegKickNation Books: ‘Flow: The Psychology of Optimal Experience’ by Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi ‘The Rise of Superman: Decoding the Science of Ultimate Human Performance’ by Steven Kotler ‘The Inner Game of Tennis: The Classic Guide to the Mental Side of Peak Performance’ by W. Think about the times when you’ve performed at your absolute best. The times when your focus and clarity were so intense that you knew exactly what to do from one moment to the next. The instances where you were your most productive, creative and powerful self. Athletes call it “the zone” but it’s also known as the flow state. Unfortunately, for most people flow states are sporadic and by accident, if they happen at all. But what if you could put yourself into a flow state anytime you need to? Imagine what it would do for your business, training, success, and life. Steven Kotler is my guest in Episode 216 of the #RenegadeRadioPodcast and he holds the keys to unlocking flow on command. Steven is one of the world’s leading experts on ultimate human performance. He is the co-founder and director of the Flow Genome Project, a global organization committed to mapping the genome of flow by 2020 and making it available to everyone. He is also an award winning journalist and the NY Times best-selling author of several amazing books including “Stealing Fire,” “Bold,” “The Rise of Superman,” “Abundance,” “A Small Furry Prayer,” and “West of Jesus”. I, Matt Wilson, was officially homeless. Tamarindo, Costa Rica July 2012 My apartment in New York was packed up, my stuff was thrown out, donated, or put in various friend’s attics. I was free. I had nothing but my Marmot climbing pack on my back. Minimalism had been achieved. Now it was time to see some shit. My plane landed in the eco-capital of the world-- Costa Rica, where 5% of all the world’s biodiversity lives. Did I break out my bucket hat and birdwatching pants and head into the jungle? Nope, I went to the most gringo town Costa Rica has to offer and took up surfing. Goal #1: Learn a new skill While I wasn’t exactly on an eco-lodge in the jungle growing my own food, hear me out… Tamarindo’s mix of surfing, partying, and people patient enough to listen to my broken Spanish was just what I needed. Little did I know, surfing would actually be a great way to get in touch with nature and even develop a little more understanding of the zen philosophy I had been studying. If you are looking to get rid of bad habits, or negative patterns in your life, finding a new hobby or a new skill is a great way to focus your efforts in a new direction. It’s why they give alcoholics the same advice when they put down the bottle; they are in need of a new best friend. Speaking of new friends, developing new skills are a great way to meet people who you actually have something in common with. And yes, this works for romantic encounters as well. Surfing never worked out for me (it’s all dudes), but yoga has been a great decision (it’s all chicks). Figure out what you are into and get involved in a community of like-minded people. Goal #2: Do something physically challenging Travel has a magical way to pull you into the present moment as your senses are immediately overwhelmed with new sights, sounds, smells, etc… surfing, and any extreme sport for that matter, can do the same. I love strenuous physical activities because when you do things that are physically and mentally exhausting like climbing Dead Woman’s Pass or Rainbow Mountain at high altitudes in Peru, there’s no chance your mind is wandering. Some days the waves were so big I could barely even paddle out. By the time I even got out there was I was too fatigued to try and catch a wave. This is the place where you really start learning to be present; when you are questioning your life choices. When a huge wave is about to crush you, you aren’t thinking about your inbox or to-do list. If you are interested in this subject, I recommend the book The Rise of Superman: Decoding the Science of Ultimate Human Performance. Goal #3: Do Something Mentally Challenging The waves in Tamarindo can be fucking huge. Intimidated or not, I had no choice but to paddle out into the lineup, learn the rules of the road, and try to catch my share of waves amongst the overly-aggressive locals. Learning a new skill, and one that can be extremely dangerous, was the perfect way to get myself out of my comfort zone and shock my system. I was literally developing new neural pathways by learning to do new things with my body. Everyone says do something that scares you. It sounds cliche, but when I see people who are afraid of heights do things like zip-line in Costa Rica, or go paragliding in Lima, people have breakthroughs. If you can jump out of a plane, you can also quit your job, end that toxic relationship, or start that business you’ve been hesitating to do. Exercise your courage muscle!! Goal #4: Do Something in Conjunction with the Planet Most of us are just so damn disconnected these days. It’s said that if you live in Hong Kong, you can go the entire year without actually touching your bare feet to the ground. We now live in not-so-healthy, climate-controlled environments, where it’s possible never to get sunshine, fresh air, or water that is truly clean as I described in my previous post on nature. Get yourself in the water and immediately you are getting exercise, absorbing nutrients from the salt water, producing Vitamin D by getting in the sun, and taking in beneficial ions and electrons from the sea. The health benefits are immense. You don’t have to go surfing, you can pick something else as your gateway to nature, but for me, it’s pretty cool when you start to think about waves and tides… You literally sit out there and wait for the earth to move, so you can ride it. Talk about being in conjunction with the planet. And to think the tides are dramatically affected by the moon...That’s some interstellar shit right there. Even when I paddle out and don’t catch a single wave, the meditative effect of watching wave after wave come in rhythmically while listening to the sound of the ocean, puts me into a good mood for hours after I get out of the water. Find something that helps you go with the flow. You won’t regret it.

Matthew Miller is an active lifestyle artist who paints because it puts him into a flow state and makes him feel truly alive. Most of his artwork celebrates the human body in action, and the mental states that go along with it. In addition to art, he also gets his fix of flow state through challenging physical activities. As a retired rugby player, ironman triathlete, and fitness coach (his day job), it is his goal to create art that celebrates an active lifestyle. Full shownotes: http://yourcreativepush.com/matthewmiller In this episode, Matthew discusses: -How art has always been a part of his life. -The role that philosophy has played in his life. -The importance of writing out your “perfect average day.” -Dealing with insomnia, how it affected his life, and eventually led him to the feeling of hitting rock bottom. -His discovery of live art. -How artists shouldn’t wait around for a gallery to find you and the importance of going out and creating your own opportunities. -His experimentation and plans to do live paintings at marathons and triathlons. -The struggle of wanting to create new things but still having so many of his previous creations sitting around. -How he struggles with having a day job that he enjoys but still wants to pursue his art. -The similarities of flow state as it relates to physical activity and as it relates to art. -His advice for people to experience flow state. -His next series and where the inspiration came from. -His experience of journaling and his analysis of his progress with his original goals. Matthew's Final Push will inspire you to write down what you want to accomplish every single day and then put in the work to get there! Quotes: “As an artist, you need to go out and create your own opportunities.” “Instead of waiting around for some gallery to invite you to show your stuff or competing against other artists trying to get into a particular show, why not make your own and find a venue that is perfect for your niche?” “Things start happening when you take an action and put yourself out there.” “I try to make art as much of an emotional, impulsive decision as possible.” “The world will pull you in the directions that it wants to pull you if you don’t stay focused on what you want and who you are.” Links mentioned: Wim Hof Power Speed ENDURANCE: A Skill-Based Approach to Endurance Training by Brian MacKenzie The Rise of Superman: Decoding the Science of Ultimate Human Performance by Steven Kotler Connect with Matthew: Website / Facebook / Instagram On the next episode: Maria Brophy : Website / Instagram Join the discussion in the Facebook group!

This conversation is with Jamie Wheal and Steven Kotler. Many of you will remember Steven from our conversation about flow state -- if you missed that, check out episode 16 on Ultimate Human Performance. Jamie and Steven are the co-founders of the Flow Genome Project, which is a collection of world-class academics, athletes and artists dedicated to taking flow from the extreme to the mainstream. I've loved being their friend and being part of their community. Jamie and Steven are completely switched-on : smart, quick and divergent thinkers, lovers of life, and are so curious, that they embody what they're trying to learn. This conversation has very nuanced adult themes -- so -- if you're listening with kids, maybe you'll want to consider listening to this one without them depending on however you roll. Steven and Jamie just wrote a book together called: Stealing Fire: How Silicon Valley, the Navy SEALs, and Maverick Scientists Are Revolutionizing the Way We Live and Work. What I hope you'll take away from this conversation is the value of exploring the edges, the value of community, and how challenging it is to really change.

Co-hosts Jan Rutherford and Jim Vaselopulos interview John Coyle, Founder and CEO of The Art of Really Living. John is one of the world’s leading experts in innovation and design thinking. John is an SVP and Professor of Innovation, and a thought leader in the field of horology — the study of how we as humans process time. His mission is to innovate the human experience, and he has been applying "design thinking" to Fortune 500 companies, careers, and leadership challenges for more than 20 years. Jan and Jim talk with John about his Olympic journey, his pursuit to maximize the ratio of experience to time, how design thinking helped him find the right questions to ask, how to achieve Flow, and when to de-stress to recover. Listen in to learn more about the path to Flow, the pursuit of excellence, and how to apply it with your team. Key Takeaways [3:39] John spent all of his time as an athlete cramming more distance into the same time. In that pursuit, he won an Olympic silver medal. Small increments of time matter greatly, and can change a life. His experience of the passage of time in the working world (slow in meetings, and fast with friends), led him to study chronoception. He now works to manipulate cognitive time. [7:51] John called every expert he could find on neuroscience and the psychology of time, until he spoke with Dr. Philip Zimbardo at Stanford, who told him everybody experiences the acceleration of time as they age, but nobody has done research on how to unwind it. [8:24] John used design thinking — a style of creative problem-solving through asking the right questions — to try to discover how to get more experienced time in our years. It is possible, as our brains don’t process time linearly. John helps people reframe their relationship with time. [17:40] One of the hallmarks of the Flow state is that the brain actually stops measuring time. Most people report this simultaneously as going really fast, and slowing down completely. Your brain is processing really fast, resulting in the ability to thin-slice and rewind moments with exquisite detail. Steven Kotler says extreme sports and meditation both lead to Flow. [20:28] If you want to slow down time on your vacations, design fear and suffering into them. We are wired for stories. We remember stories much better than data. Stories have a plot, which develops through a crisis. [22:44] Helping your team members move outside their comfort zones, to find their native strengths, and having them design their roles to do more of that, fundamentally changes their relationship with risk and reward. They will risk more when they excel in what they do. [25:10] Mike Weldon was John’s coach from age 11 to 25. He taught John, “Race your strengths; design around and train your weaknesses, but don’t make them your centerpoint.” He designed his Olympic training on Mike Weldon’s teaching, and won the silver-medal. [28:56] John says, ask the right questions in development and leadership. Instead of asking how to fix your weaknesses, ask how to design for your strengths. Don’t ask how to have more years in your life, ask how to have more life in your years. Instead of asking how to maintain a work-life balance, ask how to perform better under increasing stress, and how to recover. [37:41] Reduce stress when needed, by refocusing on your strengths, and applying these three destressors: low-grade aerobics, social intimacy, and physical contact with your partner or a pet. [42:20] Regarding having worked with particular individuals who very publicly fell from grace, John says innovation works by ignoring the rules and the status quo while generating ideas. In order to make a good solution, you then need to apply an ethics filter to the idea. Some people skip that step, and they hurt themselves and others. Quotable Quotes “The value of an increment of time is not related to its duration.” “I just started becoming obsessed with … how we experience time … the technical term is chronoception.” “Cognitively speaking, how can we experience more time, in the same amount of linear time?” “They can reframe their relationship with time, and actually slow, stop, and reverse the perceived acceleration of time.” “You can get to the Flow state so many ways, but it is one of the penultimate outcomes of the human condition.” Books Mentioned on the Show 15 Secrets Successful People Know About Time Management: The Productivity Habits of 7 Billionaires, 13 Olympic Athletes, 29 Straight-A Students, and 239 Entrepreneurs, by Kevin Kruse Neuromarketing: Is There a 'Buy Button' in the Brain? He won an Olympic silver medal in speedskating, an achievement he attributes directly to his design thinking background. When working on our wellness goals, it's easy to forget we all have both an inner coach and an critic inside our mind. The inner coach encourages us to do our best, while the critic can shut us down- dissolving our state of flow. "There's a voice inside of all of us that tells us to accomplish what we desire and never quit. This is our inner coach. This is a voice that tells us to believe in ourselves." - Jeff Grant Fortunately, we have the power to bring out the best inner coaches within us and soften our harshest inner critics. On this episode of Wellness Force Radio, coach, mentor, writer, and ultra-endurance athlete, Jeff Grant of Hillseeker, shares several hacks on how we can tap into our mind and emotions to become better athletes and more productive. Our emotions can easily distract us, but with the right mind tools, we can learn to use those emotions to our advantage. Owning Your State of Flow "In positive psychology, flow is the mental state of operation in which a person who is performing an activity is fully immersed in a feeling of energized focus, full involvement, and enjoyment during the process of the activity.” - Jeff Grant Being in the mental state of flow means that we are both amazed and inspired to be our your best. It's the natural high we feel when we're on a mission or have completed a goal such as completing a great work out, finishing a race, or finalizing a project at work. Experiencing a state of flow means that we are present in the moment. It can be difficult to get into a state of flow, but there are several tools that we can use to help cultivate more flow into our lives. Once we understand what helps us get into the state of flow, we can jump right into it when we want or need it in our lives. When Jeff finds flow during a run or through music, he tries to transfer it to another part of his life or within his work as a coach and author. The Four Stages of Flow To find flow and stay within it, there are four steps: Struggle, Release, Flow, Recover. 1) Struggle To begin our state of flow, we need to struggle on purpose. We can do this by taking ourselves out of our comfort zone and placing ourselves in an unfamiliar place, situation, or thought. Once we have struggled, we can release. 2) Release We can release ourselves from our struggle by finding something to laugh at or something that distracts us from it. 3) Flow This state of release places us in a state of natural flow and euphoria. When we're in the state of flow, we can find immense happiness and feel like anything is possible to achieve. 4) Recovery Once we're in the state of flow, we never want to let go of it again. We think that we always need to have this euphoric sensation 24/7, but recovery is part of the process as well. Recovery is important because it allows us to connect each cycle of flow. A lot of us are looking for our next great achievement: a place on the podium, a best time, or a new goal accomplished. But if we're just focusing on pushing ourselves to our limits with new goals, we might push ourselves too far, too fast. By focusing on recovering, we're give ourselves permission to take time off and not push ourselves to do more than we can handle. With goals and technology, we focus so much on the quantitative numbers that we forget that qualitative facts are just as important to our health and wellness. Flow isn't just applied to athletic performance, but to life performance and job performance as well. The 4 Stages of Flow can truly be applied to anything that we want. Discover Your Best Inner Coach To start discovering and using your inner coach to your advantage, think of the coaches or teachers that were or are still part of your life today. They most likely all have different voices and different teaching methods from giving cues and instructions to building confidence or being aggressive with a military manner. What did coaches or teachers do in the past do to help you? What were their voices like in different scenarios? If you can identify the inner coach voices in your mind, then you can learn how to build the best inner coach to help you stay focused and accomplish your goals. So, how do we begin to tap into that inner coach voice? Think again about different coaches and their styles of coaching. On this episode, Jeff shares 5 different coaching styles: Bouncer Teacher Guide Muse Motivator What's the Purpose of the Bouncer and Muse Coaches? "The inner critic loves it when we worry about what other people think. It loves it when we highlight our fears. It has a strong dislike of the flow state." -Jeff Grant The inner bouncer coach tells our inner critic to be quiet. Visualize a bouncer at a club who doesn't let others inside and acts as a bodyguard. Disarm your inner critic by giving your inner bouncer coach one new thought to help redirect your thinking. Our inner muse coach is the voice that reminds us to play and be creative. Jeff likes to tap into his inner muse by leaving the running trail and taking a different path. When he's listening to his muse coach, he may skip and jump around or go down on a slide at a playground. When we're so focused on quantitative results, sometimes we need to take a break and just play during our workouts to get into our state of flow. Playing can help snap us out of our stressful thoughts and help us experience a new state of flow. Put Your Inner Coach to Use You can practice listening to your inner coach by practicing meditation. Focus on what the voices sound like and pay attention to how they motivate you. As you meditate, concentrate on what your inner coach is telling you to do. Be sure to take your time and listen to each of the 5 inner coaches to create the perfect one. You may need a different inner coach for different moments and situations. Tap Into Your Performance With Emotions What emotions do you experience during a race or workout? Do you ever feel anger, joy, love, jealousy? We can face many emotions while we're exercising, but we don't tend to intentionally put ourselves into a state of emotion to see what positive and negative results may happen. Jeff likes to put emotions to the test by having his students focus on different emotions during a workout to discover what impact they have on them. With amazing results, Jeff discovered that different emotions can either improve or hinder our performance. By purposely tapping into emotions during a run, we can become aware of which ones serve us better. I first learned about Brian MacKenzie when I was training for my first Ironman’s and I read his books about endurance and mobility and he changed my concepts about what was possible with running. Basically, pounding out miles just doesn’t work as you get older (and when younger too). But this doesn’t apply to just running…… Brian applies exponential training approaches to optimize human performance; he relentlessly challenges conventions and tests assumptions. Recently I was reacquainted with Brian’s work when I started training with Wim Hof's cold and breathing methods and was looking to see who else was interested in them….. So I reached out to ask him on the show. Major take – aways from this episode are: How you can change anything with 10 breaths. Using breathing techniques to amplify, deepen and quicken meditation benefits. The power of breath work to stabilize mood regulation and reactive behavior patterns. Co2 adaptation + Integrating breathing, ice and heat. How to activate the Vagus nerve. Importance of diaphramatic breathing. Using breathing to access Flow States. Proper breathing technique for sport, business and life. Mobility – the importance of keeping tissue supple. Eating principles vs fads to follow that Brian coaches people on related to a) Vegetables; b)humanely treated animal protein (not stressed); c) High quality fats. The impact of a) sugar; b) processed foods; c) hydration; d) high quality breads. Must read and listen to Netflix video by Mike Pollan, “Cooked” and In Defense of Food – An Eaters Manifesto. Taking personal responsibility of your health by engaging your doctor. Benefits of getting your genetics tested (Wellness fx). Dumbing down technology so that you can feel again. Mike Rowe on the importance of working opportunities not passion. I have linked up all the show notes on redzonetech.net/podcast where you can get access to Brian’s blog publications. Suresh's Final Push will inspire you to move someone else with your art. Quotes: "The root skill is being creative." "The only question that people have is, "Who am I?" "You don't have to know anything. You just be." "People feel that they need to know before they do, and that limits them because they realize how much they don't know." "I'm not limitless, but I know how to connect with all the people on this planet. And since I know how to do that, there is no limit to me." "The vision is more than myself." "I want you to think as if the entire world was your oyster and everybody on it was on your team. Now think what you can do with that, because that's the truth." You’ve probably heard about athletes being “in the zone.” That means they’re in a flow state and are achieving peak performance. But what if you could achieve this flow state to perform better in the gym or at work? Is it even possible? Our next guest on The Power To Change is an expert at […]
Most of us have at least some familiarity with a state called "flow". If you’ve ever lost an afternoon to a great conversation or gotten so involved in a work project that all else is forgotten or found yourself completely firing on all cylinders during a swim, bike, run or other workout, then you’ve tasted the experience. In flow, you are so focused on the task at hand that everything else falls away. Action and awareness merge. Time flies. Self vanishes. Performance goes through the roof. In his book , and on today's podcast interview, my guest Steven Kotler tells you exactly how to biohack yourself into this state of flow, and how you can tap into this power to achieve amazing feats of physical and mental performance, even if you're not a "super athlete". I really enjoyed this discussion with Steven, and you're going to get a lot out of it if you want to increase your ability to tap into the equivalent of "the runner's high" anytime, anyplace. For those who are regular viewers of sports, Olympic level or professional, extreme sports or even golf, you know that what human beings are capable of is constantly increasing. What we are learning, is that the extension of human performance is not just about higher, or stronger, or faster, it's also about the mental component. It's the mental performance we are able to achieve, that makes the physical possible. This has been called being in the zone, or flow. The idea of "flow" has been around and widely studied for many years. But today, with our new forms of peering into the brain and into the very idea of consciousness, we are finding both the internal insights and the far flung potential of human performance.Steven Kotler takes us to the edge in The Rise of Superman: Decoding the Science of Ultimate Human Performance. My conversation with Steven Kotler:
In this episode of the AoM podcast, I talk to science journalist Steven Kotler about his new book The Rise of Superman: Decoding the Science of Ultimate Human Performance. In his book, Steven takes a look at the world of extreme athletes and discovers that these so-called adrenaline junkies are pushing the boundaries of human performance, and it isn't the adrenaline that's driving these advances. Rather, it's the concept of flow -- an optimal state of attention that slows down time and makes life-or-death decision making possible. In The Rise of Superman, Steven gives examples of extreme athletes -- like big wave surfers, solo rock climbers, and base jumpers -- who are tapping into flow to do the seemingly impossible. What's more, he shares research-backed ways that Average Joes can hack their own flow so that they can improve their performance across all facets of life and truly flourish.

As an athlete, being "in the zone" is a state that I absolutely love. It's something that doesn't happen as often as I like, but when I get there, it's the best feeling on earth. I've always been passionate about getting to that place and this week on the School of Greatness I've got an amazing guest with an intimate knowledge of what it means to be "in the zone."
