I spoke earlier how the Federal Government has announced it is providing $150million in funding to subsidise loans for electric vehicle purchases. Designed forworkers earning less than $100,000 per year. Surprisingly, the Federal Chamberof Automotive Industries came out in support of the move despite the fact that EVsales the world over have slowed and at a time when an increasing numbers ofnew and affordable Chinese electric brands and models are entering theAustralian market. I’m not against electric cars, far from it, they offer someexcellent benefits however Chris Bowen’s obsession with subsidizing theirpurchase with taxpayer money really irks me – electric car owners don’t pay acent for road maintenance whereas petrol or diesel owners contribute 50.6 centsa litre through fuel excise. Surely it’s time we had a fairer road user charge . I’mDavid BerthonSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Last weekend's Electric SUV Expo in Melbourne has revealed the aspirations ofsome new Chinese arrivals expected in the fourth quarter. Xpeng is one Chinesemanufacturer with lofty goals for its luxury EV products, suggesting theAustralian new car landscape will look very different in the years ahead as qualityChinese cars arrive. The Xpeng G6 mid-size SUV will be the brands first entryhere later this year targeting the successful Tesla model Y and priced below$60,000. Initially in rear wheel drive and within a year joined by two other variants. The Chinese luxury vehicle manufacturer stole the show at the Melbourne Expoby displaying its futuristic X2 flying car – the drone like two-seater showcasingthe Xpeng brand and the future of mobility. The company will also launch thelarge G9 SUV in 2025, which it suggests is the Range Rover of smart EV's. I'mDavid BerthonSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Go back 30 years and the Honda Accord was a very popular model on theAustralian market – it first arrived here in 1977 and was a very popular upmarketsedan. Of course, SUVs have since taken over the world and in recent yearsAccord sales slowed to a trickle. However, the 11 th generation Accord sedan hasarrived – the Accord e-HEV RS – just one hybrid variant at a national $64,900drive-away price. A much more technically advanced sedan to the previous modelthat finished here last year – the hybrid sitting on the same wheelbase but now75mm longer overall, 2mm wider and 1mm lower. The fourth generation Hondahybrid system in the Accord is interesting – a front wheel driver with a 2.0-litrenaturally aspirated four-cylinder petrol engine mated to two electric motorsmounted side by side – the combined output 152kW. The electric motors do mostof the work, the internal combustion engine charging the battery almostconstantly although when the going gets a little tough the petrol motor can alsopower the front wheels. Built in Thailand this new Accord is roomy with leatherseats, well equipped and nicely finished as a premium sedan but misses out onsome touches like an electric boot release.
