Join hosts Karen Garnett and Brett Attebery as they welcome Theresa Burke, Ph.D., Founder of Rachel's Vineyard Ministries! Hear the amazing stories of these beautiful healing ministries' origins and expansion. In 1986, Dr. Burke started one of the first therapeutic support groups for women who had experienced the trauma of abortion after founding The Center for Post-Abortion Healing. Rachel's Vineyard: A Psychological and Spiritual Journey for Post-Abortion Healing was then published in 1994: a unique support group model for counselors, offering a very concrete, emotional experience for women who were grieving the loss of their aborted children. In 1995, Dr. Burke adapted and expanded the curriculum into a format for weekend retreats. Soon individuals seeking healing began to travel from other states to experience this very effective, sensorial healing process. Rachel's Vineyard has now grown to over 1000 retreats annually – for women and men – offered by 375 sites in 49 states and 70 countries! Dr. Burke has additionally created the weeklong Grief to Grace healing program for victims of sexual abuse, as well as the Duty to Heal program for the military community – each with tremendous impact. We could not begin to adequately thank Dr. Burke and her teams for their decades of work in these critical healing ministries – because “Everyone Deserves to Heal!” We pray you will be equally blessed by this inspiring conversation!

The sexual abuse crisis has polarised the Church, and injured us all. Those who have survived clerical and other sexual abuse need the Church's healing power, but they are often alienated and unwelcome because they are seen as troublemakers. Innocent people scandalised by the crisis also need the Church's healing power, but they are sometimes unable to forgive the victims for coming forward. So how can we bridge this apparently unbridgeable gap? This presentation will examine the impact of sexual abuse on the individual, the impact of trauma, and how we as a Church - all of us - can begin to help restore to victims their full dignity in Christ. It will also describe Grief to Grace, a new sensory-based model for healing sexual abuse that follows the Sorrowful Mysteries."
As a psychologist specializing in PTSD, Diane Hernandez helps women overcome trauma associated with infertility and pregnancy losses. This includes abortions and the societal stigma which does nothing except prohibit women from adequately expressing their pain. In many cases, this can manifest as mood disorders including anxiety and depression which can lead to substance abuse, and even suicidal tendencies. Please open your heart and mind and give this episode a listen. We hope to bring awareness so women, and even some men, can express their grief and sadness without the fear or stigma associated with this very delicate topic. Putting aside the politics to talk about the real struggles some men and women face after abortion. --- "It's usually surrounded with secrecy, it's not something they talk about casually like they would that they're going to go get a breast implant and there's a bad job done or a botched surgery. Because of the shame that a lot of the women do feel, it's not inherently experienced as an empowering act, it's something that they just don't want a lot of people to know." Abortion is an incredibly politicised issue, and a hotly debated topic. It seems like everyone has something to say about the "right to life" or the "right to choose" - or both. Often hidden from view are those who have been through abortion, and how some of them - men and women alike - struggle with the decision they have made. In this episode, we hear from some of these people, and from Dr Theresa Burke, a psychologist who has dedicated her life to helping those who've been impacted by abortion. She shares some of her confronting early experiences of being a counselor, and how they led her to start Rachel's Vineyard, a retreat for women and men who are seeking help for depression, anxiety, post-traumatic stress, and grief in the wake of abortion. --- If you or someone you know is experiencing trauma or distress after having an abortion, we strongly urge you to seek support. In Australia, the Abortion Grief and Pregnancy Crisis Hotline is 1300 363 550. Rachel's Vineyard operates in 84 countries around the world, and 37 languages. Friday July 27, 2012 In this week’s episode: we turn our attention to the tender subject of recovery and healing from the wounds of sexual abuse, especially those sustained in childhood. My guest, Dawn Eden, shares some of the spiritual richness she found after coming into the Catholic Church as a convert, and how the prayers, sacraments, and saints of the church offer solace and renewal for those who have suffered from sexual wounds. Programming note: due to the sensitive nature of this topic, parental discretion is advised. While no abuse is graphically described in this conversation, we wish to protect the innocence of children who may be in earshot of the program. This program also features some excerpts from St. Faustina’s Diary of Divine Mercy, and in particular, contains a lovely prayer of thanksgiving for the gift of grace found in the sacramental life.
