On this week's episode of The Story Blender, I speak with noted reality television, and unscripted TV show expert Troy Devolld. We talk about how reality TV has matured and grown in recent years, the not-so-secret secrets to developing a great show (hint, hint, it has to do with authenticity not just conflict.) We also discuss what it means to reinvent yourself (and it might not mean what you think it does) and why it's important to get the mustard water out as you write your stories. Give it a listen!
And we're back! And with a really interesting chat about the realities of reality TV! True story: I asked Troy if he knew any people on that Vanderpump show, to tell them to stop making podcasts! I counted at least 6000. But, in the meantime, this was a really fun and interesting chat. You can imagine how great one of Troy's speaking events would be. Thanks for coming on the show, Troy! Troy DeVolld is a writer, producer, fine arts lover and most interestingly, a vintage TV remote collector. He wrote the book, "Reality TV" which is considered the bible of writing for reality television. He started on MTV's show "Fear" and eventually worked on "The Osbornes." Through his Fave 5 songs, we learn about his very amazing upbringing, how he met Lily Tomlin, made a documentary about Allie Willis (Earth Wind & Fire), and how he feels the future of reality tv will pan out. If you loved the songs, you can find more information on them in our BLOG. Then we play Band Or Bar in Minocqua, WI before diving into his stories of First and Last Concert. Troy can be found on Twitter. Thank you for listening and would love to connect with you. ytunesshuffle@gmail.com
