The Steelers seem to be prepping to cut Kaleb Johnson, at least given his usage both in preseason and in camp. Mullsy says that he is not worried about Kaleb Johnson getting a job elsewhere and turning into a good player. He also thinks that we should have been able to see this coming after they signed Rico Dowdle in free agency. Kaleb Johnson was apparently the 6th running back in line in drills for training camp. Dan Zangrilli took an oddly large amount of wacky calls yesterday during the rain delay in the Pirates game, including a guy that was imitating a bunch of animal noises. The cynics were right yet again. The local publications are calling out the Pirates, as are we. They did it again. ‘Collapsing is what they do best' was a line from a Post-Gazette column from Noah Hiles today. Should we be upset by how they approached the trade deadline? PG columnist Noah Hiles joined the show. Noah has no idea what will happen at the end of this season if the Pirates yet again finish in last place. Noah suggested changes should be coming if we listen to what the front office said going into 2026. Noah thinks drafting and development has been a little bit better in the last few years, but it shouldn't be enough to save Ben Cherington his job. How much of the blame with pitching goes on Bill Murphy versus the players themselves? How much blame does Paul Skenes deserve for how this season has gone? Noah told us that Bob Nutting thinks ‘incredibly highly' of Don Kelly, but didn't have a real reason why. Black & Gold Auction House – Round 1, 2026.

We've got a new “snack” for you on Sunday, but today we're revisiting an episode from 2022. Commodore Matthew C. Perry's two expeditions of 1852–1854 pried open Japan. Less well known is that one of the American ships visited Keelung in northeastern Taiwan to investigate the harbor and its coal resources. And completely forgotten is another American project, the North Pacific Exploring and Surveying Expedition of 1853 to 1856, which saw two visits to Taiwan. At that time, the United States was one of several Western powers that had an eye on establishing a foothold on Formosa's wild East Coast. The mysterious region lay outside of Chinese control and promised all sorts of possible utility, whether as a coaling station or a penal colony. In today's podcast, we're aboard the John Hancock in the company of Lt. Alexander Habersham, who wrote an account of the expedition.

The Beverly Hillbillies is a landmark television sitcom that aired on CBS from 1962 to 1971. The series follows the Clampett family who find themselves overnight millionaires after oil is discovered on their property. With their newfound wealth the family decides to uproot themselves and head to Beverly Hills. The humor stems from the constant cultural clash between the Clampetts' backwoods simplicity and the superficiality of their high-society neighbors. Despite being panned by critics of the era for its lowbrow humor, The Beverly Hillbillies was a massive ratings juggernaut, holding the No. 1 spot for its first two seasons. Is this show going to be "Black Gold" or just "Texas Tea" with the boys? Listen as they deep dive the show's pilot episode, "The Clampetts Strike Oil," and find out. America’s growth from a rugged frontier nation to the globe’s industrial superpower in the space of 100 years can be explained by one word: coal. Before coal dominance, American buildings were defined by height limits imposed by stonework. The tallest building in the 1830s was Baltimore’s 235-foot tall Phoenix Shot Tower. Transportation also worked poorly without coal. The early wood-fired 4-4-0 locomotives struggled with top freight speeds around 15 mph and pulling trains of approximately 450 tons. The transition to coal and cheap steel enabled the steel-supported 555-foot Washington Monument and allowed massive coal-fired trains to achieve express passenger speeds up to 100+ mph and haul loads over 4,000 tons. For a century the entire world was dependent on coal. It powered railroads, built urban skylines, and provided warmth, light, and power for families rich and poor. Although the American economy soared, society unknowingly suffered from coal’s debilitating health and environmental impacts. Skies were so dirty that on some days, visibility was limited to a few feet. Coal miners frequently died from cave-ins, explosions, or contracting black lung. Towns like Centralia in Illinois were fundamentally destroyed by an underground fire started in 1962 that continues to burn. Today’s guest is Bob Wyss, author of “Black Gold: The Rise, Reign, and Fall of American Coal.” We look at a range of figures that were part of coal’s story, from a largely unknown and unrecognized Pennsylvanian inventor who helped spark the Industrial Revolution to a prominent society clubwoman who clashed with the powerful coal forces in Utah that were fouling the air and sickening residents. It also includes clashes between powerful tycoons, coal miners, and the American public.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
In this episode, we listen to words of resolve, as depicted in Sangam Literary work, Aganaanooru 149, penned by Erukkaattoor Thaayankannanaar. Set in the ‘Paalai’ or ‘Drylands landscape’, the verse showers the spotlight on prominent Sangam-era cities and the extent of their wealth. A small foray into the drylands unfolds along with other fascinating voyages, as we listen to the man say these words to his heart, at a moment when it’s pressing him to part with the lady and go seek wealth: “Tiring of the comb mud, within the tall, red mound, raised with much effort by little, dull-hued termites, a bear with huge arms goes in search of the rough-trunked Mahua tree and steals its hollow, white flowers in the drylands. Traversing the winding paths herein, even if I were to attain the hard-to-get, good wealth with ease, I shan't come with you, my heart! May you live long! Muddling the white-foamed, beautiful river called ‘Sulli Periyaaru' in the domain of the Cheras, fine and well-etched boats of foreigners, arrive with gold and leave with pepper from the prosperous town of Musiri. Surrounding this town, creating a great uproar, waging war, the battle-worthy Chezhiyan, with a tall, fine elephant, captured the golden emblem of the city. His flag flutters high in the streets of his capital Koodal, and to the west of this city, up above, flutters a flag with a victorious mark of a many-specked peacock. In that peak of the Great One, filled with unceasing festivity, bees buzz around blue lotuses, blooming in the deep and wide springs herein. Akin to a garland woven with two blue lotuses from this place are her exquisite, rain-like eyes and leaving these to brim over with clear tears, I surely shan't part away with you, O heart!” Let’s trace the path through this dreary domain, as seen by the man’s vision. He starts by talking about the drylands region, by bringing before our eyes, the familiar sight of a bear digging up termite comb and after having its fill, feeling discontent with it, and then venturing in the direction of the Mahua trees, to feast on its white flowers. The man says even if the wealth, which is sought out by traversing such harsh paths, something so impossible to obtain, were to be easily attainable by him, he has no thought of leaving, as nudged by his heart. Then, suddenly he leaves the drylands and transports us to a brimming river in the domain of the Cheras, to see how the waves are pushed right and left by well-etched ships arriving from foreign nations. The word used to describe these foreigners is ‘Yavanar’ and it could be a reference to the ‘Ionian Greeks’ or it could be a term for all foreign traders, be it from Rome or Egypt! Pointing to these ships, the man informs us that these bring great quantities of gold and leave with a barter of what they considered ‘Black Gold’ – Pepper, which grew bountifully in the mountains of this region. Many a historian has remarked how India was the ‘sink of precious metals’ in the ancient era, drawing the wealth from all over the world in exchange for its natural wealth of pepper. The man has mentioned all this not to give us a historic tour but to connect it to the Pandya King Chezhiyan’s siege and conquest of this city. From Musiri on the west coast, we traverse to King Chezhiyan’s capital of Koodal, also known as Madurai. Stopping not even at this wealthy city, the man continues to a hill to the west of this city, a pilgrimage site for a God, identified by his peacock flag. The reference most probably talks about God Murugan and his seat of Thiruparankundram. The reason why the man has brought us here is not to pay our respects at the holy site, but to gaze in awe at the picturesque scene of bees buzzing around blue lotuses in the springs of this hill. Finally, the man connects these blue lotuses to the lady’s eyes and concludes by declaring that it was impossible for him to leave in search of wealth, making those eyes of hers fill with tears. To summarise the long tale, the man is simply refusing to follow his heart’s nudge and go in search of wealth, for he doesn’t want to bring any sorrow to his beloved! The subtle element here is in presenting how the bear tires of one food and immediately seeks the next, in the beginning, which could be a hidden implication that wealth-seeking is all about jumping from one thing to the next, never content, with no end to desire! Interesting also to note how the core concept of wealth is approached from many angles, such as the difficult wealth the man must seek, the golden wealth that arrives from foreign shores to Musiri, the natural wealth of pepper growing here, the wealth of Musiri brought to the city of Koodal by the warring King Chezhiyan and the natural wealth of the blue lotuses in the hills of Thiruparunkundram – Something that makes us muse on what wealth could mean to us! Though the man doesn’t want to begin a journey, he has taken us on an insightful one, showing us the splendour of those ancient Sangam places, bustling with trade and worship, etching the renown of this part of the world in that period of time!

When the authorities finally catch on, May doesn't just surrender – he stages his most outrageous con yet: a prison escape. On the run, he reinvents himself once again, and settles into Florida high society, where he flaunts his wealth, throws parties, and cozies up to the elite. When my daughter asked me why oil was such a big deal back in the day, I didn't have the answer -- so I went digging! What I found connects an 11-year-old Black girl's "worthless" land to the rise of modern America. This episode of IDKMYDE unpacks how curiosity, timing, and a little bit of oil turned one question into a story I couldn't believe I didn't already know!See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

I'm so excited to say that today's guest on the Great Women Artist Podcast is the esteemed curator, writer, broadcaster and cultural trailblazer, Ekow Eshun. Born in North-west London in 1968, Eshun has been at the forefront of creative culture for decades. Writing across subjects and presenting documentaries, Eshun has curated groundbreaking exhibitions. From the 2022 In the Black Fantastic, at the Hayward in London – to The Time Is Always Now, a study of the Black figure and its representation in contemporary art, that began at London's National Portrait Gallery, and has since travelled across the US. The author of multiple books: in 2006, he published his memoir: “Black Gold of the Sun: Searching for Home in England and Africa” an exploration of identity and race, that sees Eshun travelling through Ghana in search of his roots. And in 2024, The Strangers, a stunning work of creative nonfiction that tells the story of five pioneering Black men set against a vivid backdrop of art, culture, and resistance. So for this special episode we are going to deep dive into the women writers and artists who have influenced his life and career, including Morrison, the pioneering science fiction writer, Octavia E. Coal once powered our country. Now, despite claims by the Trump administration, it's the dirtiest, most expensive form of energy, according to Bob Wyss, a former Providence Journal reporter. Wyss tracks the history of coal in a new book called “Black Gold: The Rise, Reign, and Fall of American Coal.” He joins host Edward Fitzpatrick to talk more about what he found. Tips and ideas? Electrification requires copper but supply picture is dim The outlook for oil prices is bearish in the near term owing to excess supply, but beyond that, prices should firm as supply growth slows. Between geopolitics, economic growth and the dollar, there are plausible scenarios for both higher and lower oil, which Francisco discusses in some detail. And while Francisco and the commodity strategy team came into 2025 bullish on gold prices, they're less constructive following the substantial rally and suggest that copper may be more interesting at the moment, particularly with the metal's exposure to growth in electrification and continued supply challenges, which got more acute in the last few weeks. Francisco also addresses aluminum, which can be looked at as power in solid form, making it interesting in a time of persistent growth in power demand. For decades coal has been crucial to America's culture, society, and environment, an essential ingredient in driving out winter's cold, cooking meals, and lighting the dark. In the coalfields and beyond, in Black Gold: The Rise, Reign, and Fall of American Coal (University of California Press, 2025) Bob Wyss describes how this magical elixir sparked the Industrial Revolution, powered railroads, and built urban skylines, while providing home comforts for families. Coal's history and heritage are fundamental to understanding its legacy of threats to America's well-being. As industry developed so did clashes between powerful tycoons, coal miners, and innocent families. Exploitation and avarice led to victimization, deadly violence, and ultimately the American labor movement. More recently coal has endangered American lives and safety, brought on by two centuries of carbon combustion, and here the threat remains unresolved. This is coal's most enduring legacy, and Black Gold is pivotal in helping us understand how we got to this point. This interview was conducted by Dr. Miranda Melcher whose book focuses on post-conflict military integration, understanding treaty negotiation and implementation in civil war contexts, with qualitative analysis of the Angolan and Mozambican civil wars. Black & Gold Auction House – Round 6.
Pirates broadcaster Greg Brown joined the show. Greg reflected on the season from Paul Skenes as he enters his final home start of the season. Greg said it's already hard to tell if there is another pitcher in Pirates history more dominant than Skenes. Greg said the division crown is still a goal, but it only takes the team being a little better than average to be in a playoff spot. Greg said it takes a legitimate starting SS and/or 3B to feel serious about next season. Greg talked about the decision by Don Kelly to sit Oneil Cruz and how frustrating the second half of the season has been for Cruz. The guys asked Greg about the idea of Cruz changing his position yet again in the offseason. Poni had Greg answer questions all around the diamond for the 2026 Buccos. Black & Gold Auction House – Round 6. Donny Football Debrief – The Steelers have a new WR – Isaiah Hodgins. And baby, did this thing go off the rails…

Grammy-winning songwriter and Soul Asylum frontman Dave Pirner chats about his process, from the earliest days of the band to to the most recent album, Slowly But Shirley PART ONE:Paul and Scott talk about movie soundtracks, music discovery, and how technology changes but the power of music endures.PART TWO:Our in-depth conversation with Dave Pirner of Soul Asylum.ABOUT DAVE PIRNERDave Pirner is best known as the lead singer, frontman, and primary songwriter for the Grammy-winning alternative rock band Soul Asylum. Formed in Minneapolis in the early 1980s, the group has blended punk, roots music, power pop and other influences to create its own unique sound. After a series of indie releases and two albums for A&M, the band's widespread commercial breakthrough came with Columbia Records' release of the Grave Dancer's Union album in 1992. “Black Gold” and “Somebody to Shove” were hits on Billboard's Alternative Rock chart, with the latter reaching #1. “Runaway Train” was a top-5 pop single and earned Pirner a Grammy for Best Rock Song. The follow-up album, Let Your Dim Light Shine, produced the top 20 singles “Misery” and “Just Like Anyone.” To date, Soul Asylum has released over a dozen studio albums and Pirner has released one solo album, Faces & Names, in 2002. The band's most recent record, Slowly But Shirley, was released in September of 2024.
