Send us a textOzzy Osbourne's life was a thunderous symphony of chaos, triumph, and resilience. From co-founding Black Sabbath in 1968 and birthing heavy metal with groundbreaking albums like Paranoid and Master of Reality, to launching a wildly successful solo career marked by anthems like “Crazy Train,” Ozzy constantly redefined rock rebellion. His career was equally infamous—biting off a bat's head on stage, snorting ants, and surviving near-death experiences, including the tragic loss of guitarist Randy Rhoads. With Sharon Osbourne by his side, he reinvented himself again in the '90s through Ozzfest, which ran over two decades, and MTV's The Osbournes, which humanized the “Prince of Darkness” for a new generation. In later years, Ozzy battled Parkinson's disease and multiple health setbacks but still returned for a historic final Black Sabbath reunion show on July 5, 2025, performing seated on a bat-themed throne in Birmingham. Just 17 days later, he passed away at 76, leaving behind a legacy that merged mayhem, genius, and unexpected vulnerability. This episode dives deep into the unforgettable highs and crushing lows—from his wildest interviews and family drama to his cultural legacy and final farewell. On July 22, 2025, we lost Birmingham-born rock vocalist and cultural icon Ozzy Osbourne, rock's "prince of darkness," at the age of 76. His death, from complications due to Parkinson's Disease, ends a career spanning five decades, in which he pioneered an entire subgenre of heavy metal music, as frontman for Black Sabbath, before going on to an even bigger career as a solo artist, where he is credited for introducing the guitarist Randy Rhoads to the wider rock world, and for creating the wildly popular Ozzfest tours. Then, when he'd done it all, he and members of his family, Jack, Kelly, and his manager-wife Sharon, became pioneers of "reality TV" with the hit series, The Osbournes. On this very special episode, we hear two personal stories of how Ozzy's music and persona touched the lives of music industry professionals who were also, first and foremost, fans. Returning to our program, Jenn D'Eugenio (Women In Vinyl), made the journey to Birmingham for Ozzy's bittersweet Back To The Beginning farewell show, . She shares her first-hand descriptions of the event, plus two other fascinating Black Sabbath stories. Also returning is acclaimed music journalist Sylvie Simmons (Sounds, Kerrang!, and more), who took some time away from writing an Ozzy piece for Mojo magazine to share some personal anecdotes with Ozzy dating all the way back to his last days in Sabbath and how Sharon navigated his career back to the top.

And now for something completely different...in this special episode, we pay tribute to the late, great Ozzy Osbourne and each pick five of our favorite songs from the rock legend's career. So you may ask yourself, why are we doing an Ozzy episode on our classic alternative music podcast? We certainly don't want to be "those guys" who churn out opportunistic memorial episodes - but, quite simply, Uncle Gregg suggested "hey, we should do an Ozzy tribute" and Brett said "OK, let's do it." That's the way decisions are made here at O3L Headquarters...and six hours later, the episode is out to the world.  John "Ozzy" Osbourne passed away on July 22, 2025, at the age of 76, a little more than two weeks after his final performance at the Back to the Beginning farewell concert, a massive show that featured a who's who of heavy metal musicians, culminating in a five song Ozzy solo set and a four song finale from Black Sabbath.  Ozzy, of course, rose to prominence as the lead singer of Birmingham rock band Black Sabbath from the time of their formation in 1969 until his dismissal in 1979. Considered one of (if not THE) most influential bands in the evolution of heavy metal, Sabbath also consisted of guitarist Tony Iommi, bassist Geezer Butler, and drummer Bill Ward, releasing a string of classic albums like Black Sabbath (1970), Paranoid (1970), Master of Reality (1971), Vol. 4 (1972), Sabbath Bloody Sabbath (1973), Sabotage (1975), Technical Ectasy (1976), Never Say Die (1978) before Ozzy launched a fruitful solo career. Solo records include 1980's Blizzard of Ozz, 1981's Diary of a Madman, 1983's Bark at the Moon, and 1991's No More Tears, intertwined with occasional Black Sabbath reunions, most notably their 2013 album 13. Osbourne remained at the forefront of pop culture through his popular Ozzfest tours and his unlikely stint as a lovable TV Dad on the reality show The Osbournes. Learn more about your ad choices. Send us a textDeath comes for us all, but when it claims the icons of our youth, something different happens. This week delivered a triple blow to Gen X as Malcolm Jamal Warner (Theo Huxtable), Ozzy Osbourne, and Hulk Hogan reportedly passed away within days of each other. From wrestling action figures clutched in small hands to teenage crushes on The Cosby Show to MTV reality television, these figures spanned the entire Gen X experience. Between recording sessions for the podcast's next full episode, I felt compelled to check in. How are you processing these losses? For me, Hulk Hogan hit hardest – from childhood toys to his heel turn with the NWO to "The Hogans" reality show, he remained a constant presence across different life stages. I even bought his daughter's song! Ozzy became family through "The Osbournes," while Malcolm Jamal Warner represented that perfect college boyfriend I was certain awaited me in adulthood. As an older person wisely noted, when childhood heroes die, it can feel like our childhood itself is slipping away. But perhaps there's another perspective. We're fortunate to live in an era where technology lets us revisit these cultural touchpoints instantly. Despite the scandals and complications that may now shadow some of these figures, there's value in acknowledging how they shaped us. Take a moment today to reconnect with what these icons meant during their prime – not just as an exercise in nostalgia, but as recognition of your own journey through time. And stay tuned for our next full episode (despite some early audio hiccups) – it's going to be a good one.

He rose to prominence during the 1970s as the lead vocalist of the heavy metal band Black Sabbath, during which period he adopted the nickname "Prince of Darkness".Osbourne became a founding member of Black Sabbath in 1968, providing lead vocals from their eponymous debut studio album in 1970 to Never Say Die! in 1978. The band was highly influential in the development of heavy metal music, in particular their critically acclaimed releases Paranoid (1970), Master of Reality (1971), and Sabbath Bloody Sabbath (1973). Osbourne was fired from Black Sabbath in 1979 due to his problems with alcohol and other drugs. He then began a successful solo career with Blizzard of Ozz in 1980 and released 13 studio albums, the first seven of which received multi-platinum certifications in the United States. He reunited with Black Sabbath on several occasions. He rejoined in 1997 and helped record the band's final studio album, 13 (2013), before they embarked on a farewell tour that ended with a 2017 performance in their native Birmingham.Osbourne sold over 100 million albums, including his solo work and Black Sabbath releases. He co-starred with Jack and Kelly in the television series Ozzy & Jack's World Detour as well as The Osbournes Want to Believe with his wife Sharon and son Jack.On 5 July 2025, Osbourne performed his final show at the Back to the Beginning concert event amid ongoing health issues, having announced earlier in the year that this would be his last live performance, though he intended to continue recording music. Want to request a song? Tell us your rating? Send us a Text Message right now! Kelly Osbourne: “Papa Don't Preach” Epic Records, 2002 Pitchfork Rating: 3.7In a move that can only be described as “aggressively Y2K,” Kelly Osbourne—daughter of Ozzy, wearer of neon hair, and survivor of MTV's The Osbournes—emerged from the reality-TV fog of war to drop her cover of Madonna's “Papa Don't Preach.” A bold choice, given that Madonna's version is iconic, controversial, and, crucially, good. Kelly's version? It exists.Let's be clear: this is not so much a cover as it is a hostage situation. The song has been taken, tied to a chair in a Hot Topic changing room, and forced to watch early-2000s nu-metal music videos on loop. Guitars are over-distorted. The vocals sound like they were recorded on a Motorola Razr during a family argument. The production is less “punk rebellion” and more “GarageBand preset titled ‘Mall Goth.'”Osbourne's voice, while not the worst thing to ever emerge from a celebrity lineage (looking at you, The Return of Bruno), delivers the lyrics with all the emotional depth of a mildly annoyed barista. When she pleads, “I'm keeping my baby,” it sounds less like defiance and more like someone refusing to return a damaged Forever 21 item without a receipt. That said, there's a perverse charm to it. Like a can of expired Monster Energy found under a car seat, it's a little gross, vaguely threatening, and very much a product of its time. There's even something punk in the audacity of it all—less “fight the system” and more “I dared my label to let me do this and they blinked.”Ultimately, Kelly Osbourne's “Papa Don't Preach” is the kind of cover that reminds you of how great the original was, mainly because halfway through, you'll probably stop and listen to Madonna's instead. And maybe that's the point. Or maybe it's just a vibe. A crunchy, chaotic, eyeliner-smeared vibe.Best Track: The 1986 original RIYL: Watching VH1 at 2 am, burning your ex's hoodie, riding in the backseat of a PT Cruiser.DUBBY DUBBY is declaring WAR on big Energy!
