On July 22, 2025, we lost Birmingham-born rock vocalist and cultural icon Ozzy Osbourne, rock's "prince of darkness," at the age of 76. His death, from complications due to Parkinson's Disease, ends a career spanning five decades, in which he pioneered an entire subgenre of heavy metal music, as frontman for Black Sabbath, before going on to an even bigger career as a solo artist, where he is credited for introducing the guitarist Randy Rhoads to the wider rock world, and for creating the wildly popular Ozzfest tours. Then, when he'd done it all, he and members of his family, Jack, Kelly, and his manager-wife Sharon, became pioneers of "reality TV" with the hit series, The Osbournes. On this very special episode, we hear two personal stories of how Ozzy's music and persona touched the lives of music industry professionals who were also, first and foremost, fans. And now for something completely different...in this special episode, we pay tribute to the late, great Ozzy Osbourne and each pick five of our favorite songs from the rock legend's career. So you may ask yourself, why are we doing an Ozzy episode on our classic alternative music podcast? We certainly don't want to be "those guys" who churn out opportunistic memorial episodes - but, quite simply, Uncle Gregg suggested "hey, we should do an Ozzy tribute" and Brett said "OK, let's do it." That's the way decisions are made here at O3L Headquarters...and six hours later, the episode is out to the world.  John "Ozzy" Osbourne passed away on July 22, 2025, at the age of 76, a little more than two weeks after his final performance at the Back to the Beginning farewell concert, a massive show that featured a who's who of heavy metal musicians, culminating in a five song Ozzy solo set and a four song finale from Black Sabbath.  Ozzy, of course, rose to prominence as the lead singer of Birmingham rock band Black Sabbath from the time of their formation in 1969 until his dismissal in 1979. Solo records include 1980's Blizzard of Ozz, 1981's Diary of a Madman, 1983's Bark at the Moon, and 1991's No More Tears, intertwined with occasional Black Sabbath reunions, most notably their 2013 album 13. This week delivered a triple blow to Gen X as Malcolm Jamal Warner (Theo Huxtable), Ozzy Osbourne, and Hulk Hogan reportedly passed away within days of each other. From wrestling action figures clutched in small hands to teenage crushes on The Cosby Show to MTV reality television, these figures spanned the entire Gen X experience. Between recording sessions for the podcast's next full episode, I felt compelled to check in. How are you processing these losses? For me, Hulk Hogan hit hardest – from childhood toys to his heel turn with the NWO to "The Hogans" reality show, he remained a constant presence across different life stages. I even bought his daughter's song! Ozzy became family through "The Osbournes," while Malcolm Jamal Warner represented that perfect college boyfriend I was certain awaited me in adulthood. As an older person wisely noted, when childhood heroes die, it can feel like our childhood itself is slipping away. But perhaps there's another perspective. We're fortunate to live in an era where technology lets us revisit these cultural touchpoints instantly. Despite the scandals and complications that may now shadow some of these figures, there's value in acknowledging how they shaped us. The Black Sabbath frontman will be remembered for his music, his antics on stage and his family's reality television show, “The Osbournes.” In 2022, Tom Power sat down with the Prince of Darkness himself to discuss his new album at the time, “Patient Number 9.” But they also spoke about the legacy that Osbourne hopes to leave behind, his love for his wife, Sharon, and how he survived his addictions to drugs and alcohol.
