Send us a textOzzy Osbourne's life was a thunderous symphony of chaos, triumph, and resilience. From co-founding Black Sabbath in 1968 and birthing heavy metal with groundbreaking albums like Paranoid and Master of Reality, to launching a wildly successful solo career marked by anthems like “Crazy Train,” Ozzy constantly redefined rock rebellion. His career was equally infamous—biting off a bat's head on stage, snorting ants, and surviving near-death experiences, including the tragic loss of guitarist Randy Rhoads. With Sharon Osbourne by his side, he reinvented himself again in the '90s through Ozzfest, which ran over two decades, and MTV's The Osbournes, which humanized the “Prince of Darkness” for a new generation. In later years, Ozzy battled Parkinson's disease and multiple health setbacks but still returned for a historic final Black Sabbath reunion show on July 5, 2025, performing seated on a bat-themed throne in Birmingham. Just 17 days later, he passed away at 76, leaving behind a legacy that merged mayhem, genius, and unexpected vulnerability. This episode dives deep into the unforgettable highs and crushing lows—from his wildest interviews and family drama to his cultural legacy and final farewell. On July 22, 2025, we lost Birmingham-born rock vocalist and cultural icon Ozzy Osbourne, rock's "prince of darkness," at the age of 76. His death, from complications due to Parkinson's Disease, ends a career spanning five decades, in which he pioneered an entire subgenre of heavy metal music, as frontman for Black Sabbath, before going on to an even bigger career as a solo artist, where he is credited for introducing the guitarist Randy Rhoads to the wider rock world, and for creating the wildly popular Ozzfest tours. Then, when he'd done it all, he and members of his family, Jack, Kelly, and his manager-wife Sharon, became pioneers of "reality TV" with the hit series, The Osbournes. On this very special episode, we hear two personal stories of how Ozzy's music and persona touched the lives of music industry professionals who were also, first and foremost, fans. Returning to our program, Jenn D'Eugenio (Women In Vinyl), made the journey to Birmingham for Ozzy's bittersweet Back To The Beginning farewell show, . She shares her first-hand descriptions of the event, plus two other fascinating Black Sabbath stories. Also returning is acclaimed music journalist Sylvie Simmons (Sounds, Kerrang!, and more), who took some time away from writing an Ozzy piece for Mojo magazine to share some personal anecdotes with Ozzy dating all the way back to his last days in Sabbath and how Sharon navigated his career back to the top. In episode 229 of Heavy Metal Philosophy, Jon Barbas revisits his stance on The Osbournes Reality TV show. When it aired, we thought it ruined the myth and legacy of Ozzy Osbourne. However, now that he has passed, hindsight shows a different image. Was the show really a blessing in disguise? Were we wrong to exalt Ozzy? Should Sharon have protected him? And now for something completely different...in this special episode, we pay tribute to the late, great Ozzy Osbourne and each pick five of our favorite songs from the rock legend's career. So you may ask yourself, why are we doing an Ozzy episode on our classic alternative music podcast? We certainly don't want to be "those guys" who churn out opportunistic memorial episodes - but, quite simply, Uncle Gregg suggested "hey, we should do an Ozzy tribute" and Brett said "OK, let's do it." That's the way decisions are made here at O3L Headquarters...and six hours later, the episode is out to the world. John "Ozzy" Osbourne passed away on July 22, 2025, at the age of 76, a little more than two weeks after his final performance at the Back to the Beginning farewell concert, a massive show that featured a who's who of heavy metal musicians, culminating in a five song Ozzy solo set and a four song finale from Black Sabbath. Ozzy, of course, rose to prominence as the lead singer of Birmingham rock band Black Sabbath from the time of their formation in 1969 until his dismissal in 1979. Considered one of (if not THE) most influential bands in the evolution of heavy metal, Sabbath also consisted of guitarist Tony Iommi, bassist Geezer Butler, and drummer Bill Ward, releasing a string of classic albums like Black Sabbath (1970), Paranoid (1970), Master of Reality (1971), Vol. 4 (1972), Sabbath Bloody Sabbath (1973), Sabotage (1975), Technical Ectasy (1976), Never Say Die (1978) before Ozzy launched a fruitful solo career. Solo records include 1980's Blizzard of Ozz, 1981's Diary of a Madman, 1983's Bark at the Moon, and 1991's No More Tears, intertwined with occasional Black Sabbath reunions, most notably their 2013 album 13. Osbourne remained at the forefront of pop culture through his popular Ozzfest tours and his unlikely stint as a lovable TV Dad on the reality show The Osbournes. Learn more about your ad choices. Send us a textDeath comes for us all, but when it claims the icons of our youth, something different happens. This week delivered a triple blow to Gen X as Malcolm Jamal Warner (Theo Huxtable), Ozzy Osbourne, and Hulk Hogan reportedly passed away within days of each other. From wrestling action figures clutched in small hands to teenage crushes on The Cosby Show to MTV reality television, these figures spanned the entire Gen X experience. Between recording sessions for the podcast's next full episode, I felt compelled to check in. How are you processing these losses? For me, Hulk Hogan hit hardest – from childhood toys to his heel turn with the NWO to "The Hogans" reality show, he remained a constant presence across different life stages. I even bought his daughter's song! Ozzy became family through "The Osbournes," while Malcolm Jamal Warner represented that perfect college boyfriend I was certain awaited me in adulthood. As an older person wisely noted, when childhood heroes die, it can feel like our childhood itself is slipping away. But perhaps there's another perspective. We're fortunate to live in an era where technology lets us revisit these cultural touchpoints instantly. Despite the scandals and complications that may now shadow some of these figures, there's value in acknowledging how they shaped us. Take a moment today to reconnect with what these icons meant during their prime – not just as an exercise in nostalgia, but as recognition of your own journey through time. And stay tuned for our next full episode (despite some early audio hiccups) – it's going to be a good one.

Yesterday, Ozzy Osbourne passed away at age 76. The Black Sabbath frontman will be remembered for his music, his antics on stage and his family's reality television show, “The Osbournes.” In 2022, Tom Power sat down with the Prince of Darkness himself to discuss his new album at the time, “Patient Number 9.” But they also spoke about the legacy that Osbourne hopes to leave behind, his love for his wife, Sharon, and how he survived his addictions to drugs and alcohol.
LA Mayor Karen Bass said ICE was conducting a “reign of terror” in Los Angeles. Ironically, it was the War on Terror that produced ICE in the first place. A proposed housing authority to help people affected by Palisades and Eaton Fires is on hold after some residents, like reality TV personality Spencer Pratt, complained. The 2025 California Biennial at the OC Museum of Art features works and artifacts from teen artists and adults reflecting on their teen years. It's called “Desperate, Scared, but Social.” Ozzy Osbourne died on Tuesday at age 76. He transformed his image from Black Sabbath frontman to irascible TV dad. “The Osbournes” set the scene for the glut of celebrity TV family shows that followed.

To honor the passing of Ozzy Osbourne, Pierre Robert flashes back to a remarkable conversation with The Prince of Darkness in 2001. Ozzy was joined by his wife Sharon and during the chat Pierre got Sharon's first impressions of Ozzy and how she would hide his clothes to curb his drinking (unsuccessfully). Ozzy also remarked how he owed everything to the fans (and about 50 die-hard ones were invited to the interview to bear witness and praised Ozzy for it). Pierre also casually asks if Ozzy and Sharon are going to be in a television show...that turned into the smash reality series The Osbournes. These stories and many others as we honor the great and powerful Ozzy Osbourne!
