Tread Perilously settles in for a month of shows that inspired WandaVision with an episode of The Dick Van Dyke Show called "Racy Tracy Rattigan". With Alan Brady out on vacation, Rob and the others must write the next two shows for guest host "Racy" Tracy Rattigan. The British actor proves to be funny and charming, but his immediate interest in Laura leaves Rob a little unnerved. It becomes full-tilt unnerved when Rattigan comes to their home under the guise of working on sketches, but ends up coming on to Laura. Will Rob's response sink Rattigan's commitment to the show? Erik returns from his own vacation with some rusty podcast skills and the wrong microphone. He and Justin get back into the swing of things via a chat about Jack Quaid and the current Marvel Cinematic Universe. The pair also fall in love with Mary Tyler Moore all over again. Justin learns the Morey Amsterdam joke and immediately warms to Rose Marie. Guest star Richard Dawson gets some flowers even as Erik tries to determine if Rattigan is supposed to be Peter Sellers, Dudley Moore, or both. Though not on screen, Carl Reiner proves to be the MVP. But will a 1963 episode of the show turn out surprisingly modern?

Where Everybody Knows Your Name with Ted Danson and Woody Harrelson (sometimes)
It's a double date for the ages as Ted Danson and Mary Steenburgen visit Dick Van Dyke and his wife Arlene Silver at their lovely home! Dick is a personal hero to Ted and Mary, so they're asking him about his illustrious career from his broadcasting roots to Broadway and The Dick Van Dyke Show. Dick also shares about encounters with Walter Cronkite and Stan Laurel and his experiences working on films like Chitty Chitty Bang Bang and Mary Poppins. Bonus: Ted and Mary get Dick and Arlene's respective takes on how their first meeting went down. This conversation was recorded in 2024. One of the titans of early tv sitcoms, as well as a massively successful producer, singer, and philanthropist, Danny Thomas earned his stripes as a radio comedian (especially on The Bickersons) in the 1940s, then hosted his own radio variety show, then in the early 1950s jumped to television and began his classic show "Make Room for Daddy". After that, while Danny would continue to make tv and stage appearances (including a 1970's reboot called Make Room for Granddaddy), he also conquered the tv production world with shows including The Andy Griffith Show, The Dick Van Dyke Show, The Mod Squad, and That Girl (starring real-life daughter Marlo Thomas). Closest to Danny's heart, though, was the word he did to establish the world-famous St. Jude Children's Medical Center, the result of a promise a young and struggling Danny made to St. Jude Thaddeus, the patron saint of lost causes. As always find extra cuts below and thanks for sharing our shows! Want more Danny Thomas? A signature theme song was a must for early tv stars -- think of The Honeymooners -- and Danny Thomas was no exception with this fine jazz version of the Irish classic Danny Boy. https://youtu.be/rAMrzvqU2RQ?si=RutT59t7anfOh3_J To get a feel for Danny's comedy style, here's a great full episode of Make Room for Daddy from season six, back before tv discovered the world was in color. https://youtu.be/sJjFeM9ZvbU?si=lGXBgUiHE9RvTDI_ Late in his career Danny would take the occasional guest spot, as he did in Happy Days in 1978. https://youtu.be/qWxNS202fV4?si=vZaFGX990ROP5vF0 As with may 1960s(ish) era tv stars, Danny was happy to be a pitchman when needed and this is a great example -- a Maxwell House Coffee ad. Sorry for the video quality, but enjoy the "Brady Bunch house" vibes of the set.https://youtu.be/sJjFeM9ZvbU?si=lGXBgUiHE9RvTDI_

Send us a textApple TV's Ted Lasso has much to teach us about humility and social etiquette? This episode takes us through the surprising and delightful ways Ted Lasso echoes many life lessons. We reflect on FD's seminary days, where they uncovered the nuances of social graces, and how Ted Lasso's curious nature rather than judgmental outlook influences our personal growth and understanding of faith.Joe Cronauer strolls down memory lane, reminiscing about iconic sitcoms like "The Dick Van Dyke Show," "Seinfeld," and "Friends," while recognizing Ted Lasso's unique charm. We delve into the potential Eucharistic symbolism of Ted's biscuit-sharing ritual and how it subtly transforms relationships through kindness. An absolute titan of 20th century comedy, Carl Reiner also was one of the most beloved writers/actors/producers/directors that Hollywood has ever produced beginning with his work on Sid Caesar's Your Show of Shows, then creating The Dick Van Dyke Show, then directing Steve Martin in The Jerk and George Burns in Oh God! And, oh yeah, he also created The 2000 Year Old Man routine with his best friend Mel Brooks. It was a simply amazing comedy career and, as always, you can find extra cuts below and thanks for sharing our shows! Want more Carl Reiner? With The Dick Van Dyke show, Carl created one of the greatest sitcoms of all time and he got in on the acting fun playing the egotistical boss Alan Brady. Here's some Alan's best. https://youtu.be/bHUfCA9EcE4?si=CJin7dTU-Ab5aG28 With Mel Brooks, Carl created one of the greatest two man bits ever, the 2000 Year Old Man. Carl supplied the questions, Mel supplied the answers, and comedy gold was spun. https://youtu.be/XOTKDgrdvdg?si=coNPQPn1iEYfteoA Later in life, Carl was seen as a wise elder to comedy writers and performers so it's no surprise that Jerry Seinfeld featured him on his great show Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee. https://youtu.be/grUEiFY1XUg?si=hbEv6LReCj1OcLkj
To a baseball purist, Pete LaCock was a dangerous hitter. His eye, his plate discpline and his ability to come through in the clutch allowed him to have a terrific 9 year MLB career before playing in Japan. But it's his love for the game, his rivalry with Hall of Famer Bob Gibson, and his famous family (and their friends) that make this such an endearing conversation with a great storyteller. If you're a Cubs fan, Royals fan, fan of Hollywood Squares, My Three Sons, The Dick Van Dyke Show or just of great stories, this episode is a must listen with Pete LaCock. (listen closely and you can hear his wife "helping" Pete with his stories. We got a 2-1!!)

Happy Emmy voting day! Before casting your vote, treat yourself to one last listen. I'm thrilled to have spoken with Production Designers Steve Morden and James Yarnell, along with Set Decorator John Sparano, about their Emmy-nominated special, "Dick Van Dyke: 98 Years of Magic." They share their incredible experiences and stories of transforming a grand vision into reality, honoring the legendary Dick Van Dyke in this remarkable variety special. Celebrating the life of a legend like Dick Van Dyke was no small feat, especially within the tight time frame provided. Yet, this challenge offered a unique opportunity to recreate iconic sets and decor from Dick's illustrious career. From meticulously replicating the "Dick Van Dyke Show" set—right down to one of the original lamps—to creating a stage that splits down the center to accommodate various performances celebrating his storied career, the team went above and beyond. At 98 years old, Dick Van Dyke was visibly moved by the faithful recreation of his former workplace. For designers and decorators, this heartfelt reaction is the highest compliment they could receive. Are you a fan of TV and film production? When you think of Paul Winchell, you think of a ventriloquist, comedian, and actor. But, did you know that Paul invented the mechanical artificial heart? He hosted the Paul Winchell show on TV and appeared on “The Brady Bunch,” “The Dick Van Dyke Show” and “The Beverly Hillbillies.” He was the voice of many characters on TV cartoons, including Tigger for which he won a Grammy for his performance in “Winnie the Pooh and Tigger Too.” His famous dummies Jerry Mahoney and Knucklehead Smiff are in the Smithsonian Institution. In school his art teacher allowed him to receive credit for creating a ventriloquist's dummy and that got him started on his career at age 14.

By 1963, Bill Persky had already worked as a lifeguard at Grossinger's in the Catskill Mountains and watched the hotel's standup comics make people laugh. He'd written a show at Syracuse University that won a national collegiate award. He'd worked at an advertising agency and radio station in New York before moving to California to write for television. And then in 1963, everything changed. He and his writing partner Sam Denoff started writing for a show that is considered a classic: The Dick Van Dyke Show. A door had opened and on other side stood the rest of his life. What is it like to create something early in your life and then watch as that creation has a tangible effect on people decades later? Musicians know the feeling. Actors and writers too. It's a feeling Bill Persky knows well. He and his writing partner Sam Denoff wrote many of the classic episodes of The Dick Van Dyke Show, a 1960's show that is timeless and often held up as TV comedy writing at its best. 60 years later and we are still laughing. 83-Year-Old-Jewish-Vaudevillian trapped inside a 24-year-old's body, Joseph Katz is our guest this week. A finalist in the 2024 Boston Comedy Festival – Joseph Katz chats with OUR Joe and Jacques about their mutual love for the Dick Van Dyke Show, Jack Benny and pre-Carson Tonight Show (Note: we all also LOVE Carson's Tonight Show.) Katz had a cable access (Daily Show) type program in high school, followed by his college radio comedy talk show at WMUL at UMass Lowell (about 3 miles from Jacques' shack) – Comedy IS his life! And his life is pretty good! Katz falls somewhere between the great Emo Phillips and the Boston Legend Steven Wright. An “absurdist” style of very smart humor with hard to see coming, sharp right turns. The youngest comic on the finals stage at BCF this year and he's only going to get more seasoned. He is truly one to watch as he's just that lucky break from becoming a nationally known comic. Author and researcher Dr. Richard Alan Miller reveals a depth of knowledge and experience in alternative agriculture, physics, and metaphysics. A true Hollywood survivor, Barry Livingston is one of the fewchild stars who turned early success into a lifelong career. As "Ernie"on the 1960s sit-com My Three Sons-Barry became instantlyrecognizable for his horn-rimmed glasses and goofy charm —America's prototype Nerd.Nearly six decades later, after working on hits like Mad Men,Desperate Housewives, and The Social Network, this one time childstar beat the odds and survived the dark side of the Hollywood dreamfactory-with charm, wit, determination and big horn-rimmed glasses.BARRY LIVINGSTON was seven years old and living with his family inLos Angeles when a talent agent at a community swimming pool spottedhim. Slightly crossed eyed and buck-toothed, Barry was the epitome of theAll-American boy. Within days of being spotted, Barry was cast as one ofPaul Newman's children in the 1958 comedy Rally Round the Flag, Boys.Much to the consternation of the movie's director, comedy legend LeoMcCarey (The Marx Brothers' 1933 classic Duck Soup) Barry's eyesseemed to have a mind of their own and ruined take after take. It wasdiscovered that he had astigmatism and he was promptly fitted with bigtortoiseshell glasses-giving him an owlish but unmistakably adorable andappealing look, and one that caught the attention of casting directors. At the age of eight, Barry was suddenly in demand as the "kid next door"and was featured on such popular situation comedies as The Adventures ofOzzie and Harriet and The Dick Van Dyke Show and in such movies as MySix Loves with Debbie Reynolds. He also appeared on two episodes of TheLucy Show 1963, starring America's favorite redhead, Lucille Ball. In one,Lucy attempts to give Barry a haircut, with disastrous results. Barryremembers, "To a nine-year-old- kid, there was nothing more terrifying thanto have Lucille Ball coming at you with a giant pair of scissors."In late 1963, shortly after his ninth birthday (andalready a TV veteran) Barry joined the cast of thehugely popular situation comedy My Three SonsBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/night-dreams-talk-radio--2788432/support.
How did we get from the terrible 2020s to here? Suzanne Taylor created an essay contest to answer that question and people shifted from being overwhelmed by doom and gloom to excitement about humanity's future! Join us in talking with Suzanne about the wealth of ideas generated by her contest -- and where we can go from here. Suzanne was a painter and an actress – her many TV credits include The Dick Van Dyke Show, (she played Van Dyke's secretary in the feature film Divorce American Style), I Dream of Jeannie, and My Favorite Martian. In the 1970s, she turned all her attention to the world problematique. She's made many wonderful contributions since then, including two feature documentaries about crop circles: What on Earth? Inside the Crop Circle Mystery and Crop Circles: Quest for Truth. As well as 36 episodes of The Cosmic Fuel Pump for “How I get sane in a crazy world” on local Los Angeles TV. On her current platform, NOW WHAT? (where the contest came from) she is working on rallying we-the-people to become the force we could be. Harvey Brownstone conducts an in-depth Interview with Barbara Bain, Legendary Actress, “Mission Impossible” About Harvey's guest: Today's special guest, Barbara Bain, is a beloved actress who is perhaps best known for her portrayal of undercover agent “Cinnamon Carter” on the classic TV series, “Mission: Impossible”, for which she became the first actress in television history to receive 3 consecutive Emmy Awards for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series. She also created the iconic role of “Dr. Helena Russell” in the classic British science fiction series “Space: 1999” and the made-for-TV movies “Alien Attack”, “Destination Moonbase Alpha”, “Cosmic Princess” and “Journey Through the Black Sun”. And over the years we've seen her in dozens of TV shows including “The Dick Van Dyke Show”, “Perry Mason”, “Get Smart”, “Moonlighting”, “Murder, She Wrote”, “Diagnosis Murder”, “CSI” and many more. Her movie credits include “Savage”, “Skinheads”, “Panic”, “Bel Air”, “Trapped”, “Political Disasters”, “Nothing Special”, “On the Rocks”, “American Gun”, for which she received a DVD Exclusive Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress, and 3 of my favourite short films: “Reconnected”, for which she received a Best Actress nomination at the Madrid International Film Festival; “Take My Hand”, for which she won 3 prestigious film festival awards; and “Pacific Edge”, for which she won Best Actress Awards at the Golden Door International Film Festival AND the Los Angeles Independent Film Festival. And I can't resist mentioning her hilarious performance as “Dr. Olga Schmetner” in the 1981 TV movie, “The Harlem Globetrotters on Gilligan's Island”. On the stage, she's won Los Angeles Critic's Circle and DramaLogue Awards for her performances in "Wings", "Happy Days" and "The Chairs". And in 2016 she received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Do you receive a lot of solicitations to donate to St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital? The guy responsible for this wonderful charity is Danny Thomas. He dedicated his life to fund raising for the hospital. Danny was a singer, actor, comedian, and producer. He starred in his own show and appeared on many other talk, comedy, and variety programs throughout his long career. Most notably, “The Danny Thomas Show” and “Make Room for Daddy.” In radio he played Amos on “The Bickersons” and was Jerry Dingle the postman on “The Baby Snooks Show.” He starred in the “Jazz Singer” with Peggy Lee, “Call Me Mister” with Betty Grable and “I'll See You in My Dreams” with Doris Day. Thomas produced many shows including “The Andy Griffith Show” and he discovered Mary Tyler Moore for “The Dick Van Dyke Show.” His daughter, Marlo Thomas, was the star of the sitcom “That Girl” and has won three primetime Emmys. President Ronald Reagan awarded Danny the Congressional Gold Medal. He'll explain how St. Jude's started.

Big screen tough guy Sheldon Leonard went from cutting a menacing figure in To Have and Have Not and It's a Wonderful Life to producing classic TV sitcoms like The Andy Griffith Show and The Dick Van Dyke Show. In three old time radio thrillers, he'll show off his acting chops, first as a hired killer who's looking for a friend in "Feast of the Furies" (originally aired on CBS on July 11, 1946). We'll also hear him co-starring with Rosalind Russell in "When the Bough Breaks" (originally aired on CBS on May 3, 1951) and Jack Benny in "The Face is Familiar" (originally aired on CBS on January 18, 1954). Plus he shows off his lighter side as a proud papa of a safecracker in "Butch Minds the Baby" from The Damon Runyon Theatre.
John is one of the preeminent comedy promoters in the country. He concentrates on the Boston market. This is an absolutely hilarious conversation about everything comedy. John has hilarious stories about working with some of the biggest comedians in the business (especially the great Boston headliners Don Gavin and Nick DiPaolo). We also talk classic sit-coms like "Mash," "The Dick Van Dyke Show," "All in The Family," "The Mary Tyler Moore Show" and of course how HOT Mary Tyler Moore was. John has GREAT stories growing up in Boston as a huge radio and tv fan. Hear how as a kid he wanted to be in show business, how working in radio led to being a doorman at a comedy club which led to him being one of the most important and influential comedy promoters.

She could turn the world on with her smile. But, for the “real” Mary Tyler Moore — one of the biggest television stars of the 1970s — what lay beneath that smile? In his engrossing and incisive documentary “Being Mary Tyler Moore”, filmmaker James Adolphus (“Soul of a Nation”, “You Ain't Got These”) presents a three-dimensional portrait of MTM, placing her in cultural context and illustrating what made her such a singular talent. Joining Ken on the podcast, James describes his unexpected and thorough approach to the topic and how, eventually, Mary completely won him over. How is it that someone who had never seen a minute of the “Dick Van Dyke Show”, “The Mary Tyler Moore Show” or the film “Ordinary People” came to direct this project? In what ways did Mary's appearance on “The David Susskind Show” and in an interview with Rona Barrett illuminate both how Mary was perceived and how she asserted herself? And how did Mary's final marriage with Dr. Robert Levine prove to be a truly liberating love story? “Being Mary Tyler Moore”, which is nominated for an Emmy Award for Outstanding Documentary or Nonfiction Special, is available for streaming on Max. Kelly from the Dr. QuinnCast Podcast joins me to discuss this episode of The Dick Van Dyke Show! The Dick Van Dyke Show: 100 Terrible Hours originally aired on May 5, 1965 "Rob recalls his interview for The Alan Brady Show, which took place after a radio broadcast that kept him on the air for 100 hours straight."
Moore is the subject of a new HBO (MAX) documentary that explores her rise in Hollywood — from her 1970s hit The Mary Tyler Moore Show, which inspired a generation of single professional women, to her 1960s breakout role on The Dick Van Dyke Show. She spoke with Terry Gross in 1995. Also, we remember novelist, essayist and literary critic Martin Amis, who died last week at 73. Film critic Justin Chang reviews the new live-action remake of The Little Mermaid.
