“You're worth more dead than alive!”We've talked a lot about Steptoe & Son – and its principle artistes – recently on Goon Pod and the sister show so it feels appropriate this week to air this interesting chat.It is July 1973 and the second feature film based on the hit BBCTV sitcom about a pair of rag-and-bone-men has just come out. Unfortunately its release coincides with a much more popular film in the shape of Roger Moore's maiden Bond outing Live And Let Die and most people go to see that instead. Although Steptoe & Son Ride Again worked better than the first film, as it anchored the characters in familiar territory, it did badly where the first had done well. Co-writer Alan Simpson said “I suspect the majority of people hadn't liked the first one so didn't go back for the second, which is a shame.” When their aging horse Hercules has to be put out to pasture,father-and-son totters Albert and Harold Steptoe face galloping financial calamity. Falling in with Frankie Barrow, the ‘Godfather of Shepherd's Bush', Harold foolishly buys a greyhound, hoping ‘Hercules II' will be the answer totheir pecuniary woes… only to discover the dog is extremely short-sighted and useless for racing. With money owing to Barrow Harold hits on a scheme which if pulled off would get Frankie off his back but would require him and his father to start a new life where nobody knows them (“I could be Harry Faversham”): they will fake Albert's death and claim his life-insurance money. From this fairly simple premise comes great comedy and some marvellous character work, not least from the two leads, Wilfrid Brambell and Harry H. Corbett. They are ably supported by a cast which includes Milo O'Shea as a brandy-ridden sawbones, Henry Woolf as Frankie, Yootha Joyce as Harold's Auntie Freda, Frank Thornton, Bill Maynard, Neil McCarthy, Richard Davies and, memorably, Diana Dors as a recently-widowed housewife wanting a bit of the other from a frankly terrified Harold.Joining Tyler are Michael Livesley & Paul Carmichael, and while discussing the film the three regularly meander down conversational alleyways, chatting about the lost art of home taping, antiquated or regional profanities, the history of Live TV, the great British tradition of innuendo, and boomer nostalgia, while referencing the likes of One Foot In The Grave, The Goodies, Married With Children and even Bottle Boys! Plus they talk about their great love for the Steptoe TV series, the actors involved and even envisage Wilfrid Brambell squaring up to Frank Zappa!This was recorded in October 2025 and originally put out as part of Goon Pod Film Club: Patreon.com/GoonPod

She remembers singing with Bob Dylan as a teenager, going to dinner with him while he wore no shoes, working with Bette Midler and Etta James, and navigating a music industry where heavy drug use was accepted as long as you made it to the gig. She also discusses her first husband's heroin addiction, experimenting with heroin herself, driving with ounces of cocaine in her trunk and continually placing herself in dangerous situations to stay loaded. Katey explains how she entered AA while searching for a boyfriend named Spider, stayed sober for several months, relapsed while working in New York and finally got sober for good on August 6, 1986. Only months into recovery, she began playing Peg Bundy on Married… with Children. She talks about telling someone on set that she was sober, working the Steps immediately, and maintaining her recovery as the show became a cultural phenomenon. The conversation also covers Futurama, Sons of Anarchy, meeting Kurt Sutter in a Twelve Step meeting, sponsorship, service, gratitude, Al‑Anon and why addiction continues to surface through food, shopping, control and obsessive thinking—even after the drugs are gone. Before Katey joins the show, Dave responds to a 23-year-old listener struggling with pyrazolam, kratom, marijuana and alcohol; celebrates Ben Croxton's . In the late 1980's and early ‘90's, Bobbie Brown was seemingly everywhere. She was crowned Miss Louisiana Teen USA, finished second runner up in the Miss Teen USA pageant, spent months on Star Search as the most prominent model in the show's history, was featured in music videos for artists ranging from Terence Trent D'Arby to Great White, and made one of the most popular guest appearances in Married With Children's long television run. It was her playfully suggestive performance in the video for Warrant's ‘Cherry Pie' however, that she is widely remembered for. Integral to Jesus's full humanity was his manhood or maleness. As the "exemplum virtutus," he thus imbibed all the virtues in a male-structured and male-conditioned manner. This includes the virtue of chastity (or, more specifically in his case, the virtue of virginity). Though men are neurobiologically oriented to sexual desire and pleasure and to the visual aspects of sex, to the extent that the male fallen condition is particularly prone to lust, the struggle with lust was not characteristic of Jesus, even if he possessed the natural male neurobiological structuring. The Gospel evidence shows a Jesus who enjoyed unfettered, virtuous relationships with his female (and male) disciples and who insisted that his followers exercise strict sexual self-mastery. He was the model for this. The Gospel evidence also indicates that Jesus held an extremely high estimation of marriage. Though he did not struggle with lust, he could however have experienced sexual temptation, given his recognition of the good of sex and the good of marriage. This talk will examine all of this.
