In this podcast episode, we continue our cannabis conversation with Jilliein Franquelli of Mj Magazine. See how she is using her passions, skills, and talents to help break the stigma of cannabis use within MD's borders by tuning in! Jilleien has spent her entire career focused on building community. After 15 years in the multifamily housing industry, she founded Ripple Effect, which took the best practices from that industry, and focused on bringing marketing and branding solutions to entrepreneurs. This entrepreneurial endeavor led her back to the family business of publishing. In 2018, Jill joined the cannabis community as Co-Founder of MaryJane of Maryland. Today Jill is the owner and publisher of Mj Magazine a medical cannabis community and magazine centered around sharing the stories of Maryland Cannabis patients and their experiences medicating with marijuana. Jilleien received Entrepreneur of the Year from True Conversations in 2017. Amidst all of this, she continues to run her nonprofit “Simple Sacrifice,” an organization dedicated to feeding the homeless and hungry in Baltimore City on a weekly basis. Currently, she and her wife Colleen live in Federal Hill with their puppy, Petey.
You’re tuning into The Monster Theory Podcast, Episode #12.You know, I’ve always been extraordinarily honest about my life. It’s something that I’ve shared frequently in many venues – whether it’s on TV, radio, podcasts, social media – I mean I just open up because here’s the thing:I believe that when you tell your own story…when you are willing to be open and honest and vulnerable and not give a hoot about what people think…then you own and earn the power to tell that story and more importantly, you de-power other people from telling the story that they want to tell about you.And so, I have to tell you that this interview I recently did on a podcast called True Conversations is one of the first times that I really, really share the story behind the story. My journey about my life’s mission, both in my work with Saving Promise – the nonprofit I founded that’s inspired by five generations of domestic violence in my family including my daughter’s little girl named Promise – and the story that ultimately inspired The Monster Theory which I believe is my life’s mission as well: to empower and inspire women to find their voice, their vision, their passion, purpose and ultimately, their power. You know, I didn’t even really prepare a script for this introduction nor did I prepare a script for the interview because I wanted to be real…I wanted to be open…I wanted to be vulnerable…I wanted to be honest about everything. So I invite you to take a listen, take a lesson, and allow my story to empower and inspire you.And even if you walk away from it and you’ve just enjoyed listening to it, it is always my intention to use my story, my voice, and my influence to serve other women. So without further ado, let’s dive in!
Party Politics founder, Atiba Madyun invites photojournalist Haywood Galbreath to the table to discuss how racism played a role in the OJ Simpson trial and how that trial has played a role in racism experienced today in America, from #takeaknee to police brutality to music and media influences. Co hosted with True Conversations founder, Meghan Enriquez, this truly brings 3 unique perspectives on the black culture experience to the table, with challenging and much needed discussion about what we can do now to move forward and eliminate barriers of inclusion for future generations. Meghan Enriquez is the founder and CEO of TRUE Conversations. Soon after the birth of her second child, Meghan had what she calls a “face plant moment,” which ignited her to create TRUE Conversations. She is highly sought after to speak with, train, and interview a variety of audiences around the most stigmatized issues of today: communication, leadership, and redefining true success. Meghan served as an Intervention Director at Johns Hopkins University for a clinical trial while juggling the demands of motherhood. This millennial, Asian-American entrepreneur who came to America as an infant adoptee has earned her bachelor’s degree in both Exercise Science and Psychology from Slippery Rock University. Join me for this uplifting conversation with Meghan! TWEET: There was an undeniable force that wouldn’t let me sleep until I took #action. @trueconversationsllc The “Face Plant Moment” Have you experienced these moments? Meghan describes it as the moment when you are utterly spent, barely able to function, and just surviving through life. For her, this came after the birth of her second child, when physical problems dominated her life. The great disconnect with what you want out of life and what your reality has become can make you say, “There is something wrong with me.” These moments have the power to change you, and Meghan shares how she learned to be “transparent with purpose” to empower and uplift others. TWEET: Being #transparent with a purpose was a formula the world was really craving. @trueconversationsllc Open Minds and Hearts Can YOU see both sides of an issue? Stigmatized issues are changing constantly in today’s world. Meghan says there is a “lost art” of being able to respectfully disagree. We need open minds and open hearts to call people to transparency and honesty. When people show up with this attitude, magic happens. We know that NOT being able to see another’s perspective is NOT working in our society. Meghan says, “We want to create a new normal.” TWEET: We want people to feel more capable, more validated, and gain more #wisdom. @trueconversationsllc Wanting to be Understood Isn’t that what we all crave—being understood? Meghan explains the bullying she experienced as she grew up as an adopted Korean in American white society. Because of this bullying, she only longed to be understood. This became the foundation of TRUE Conversations, where Meghan encourages people to look behind the skin color, behavior, and religion to see the value in people, even if you don’t agree. TWEET: There is a lost #art of being able to respectfully #disagree. @trueconversationsllc Guest Recommendation: ONE action for a dream chaser to take—“Get to know yourself, and know that it could take years. In our society, we don’t value being honest and open with ourselves. There is always something extra to discover about who you are.” OUTLINE OF THIS EPISODE: [1:30] Meghan’s upcoming conference in MD: TRUE Conversations Live [3:30] Meghan’s “face plant moment” [8:10] The intention behind TRUE Conversations [10:40] The objectivity of “both sides of the table” [13:53] Meghan’s background of blended cultures [15:33] Positive influences to overcome negative self-image [17:30] “When I grow up” [20:48] Helping people who are scared to take the leap [24:56] The hardest moments and most beautiful gifts [27:56] People who want to be part of your vision [34:54] Meghan’s ONE action for a dream chaser RESOURCES MENTIONED IN THIS EPISODE: Meghan’s Website Meghan on Instagram Meghan on Twitter TWEETS YOU CAN USE: TWEET: I was a mindful and attentive friend and wife, focusing on the #lesson to be learned. @trueconversationsllc TWEET: Own who you are and put it into action, even when you’re scared out of your mind. @trueconversationsllc TWEET: Building your #faith in whatever you believe in---that’s what’s most important. @trueconversationsllc
We will be talking with Meghan Enriquez today from True Conversations. We’re going to hear how she started a podcast to grow her movement, how she grew the podcast into a network, and how she fosters engagement with her target audience. She also is hosting an event at the end of September 2017, so listen for that later. How Meghan got into podcasting Meghan was not looking to become a podcasters. She started her company, True Conversations, back in January 2016 after shifting career goals and being home with 2 young children. She felt there was a need to change the culture in how we communicate and lead. True Conversations started out being events and training, but one day at a lunch, the broadcaster for the Baltimore minor league team suggested podcasting as a useful platform for her to explore. Although Meghan at the time didn’t know what a podcast was, she soon saw the value of it as a medium for spreading the mission of True Conversations—to promote understanding around stigmatized issues—into the world. Although she didn’t know how to do it, she knew she could learn, and so that’s what she did. It has been the biggest blessing and best decision she made around True Conversations. From one podcast to a whole network In order to cover the breadth of issues and all the life and human experiences that deserve to be talked about, Meghan realized she’d need to open up the podcast network. That way, a variety of people can have it as a platform and a safe space to respectfully bring to the table stories, networks and topics that Meghan personally didn’t have experience with. People were invited to have their own show as long as they were willing to maintain the same sort of vibe of having true conversations that are real, transparent, uplifting and empowering, being respectful of all sides of an issue and promoting the culture of spreading understanding. So much of what overwhelms our social media dialogue right now is arguing, pettiness and taking sides, and that’s part of the reason all the shows on the network are on the same podcasting channel: it means listeners bump into and naturally come across topics, conversations and perspectives that they might have otherwise have avoided due to the personalization in how news is consumed these days. The diversity aspect is really important and what pushed Meghan to create the network. Before the podcast, there were live events True Conversations began by hosting small coffee shop events with a panel of people from as many sides of an issue as possible and having a true conversation around it. The first event was about redefining the health journey and featured four people living a health journey and going about it very differently, with different beliefs. The goal was to normalize that whatever you choose is good for you. Other topics have included world peace, faith and body image. True Conversations also has a contributor-fed blog, which was a way to allow people from different walks of life to have their space on the platform before the podcast came about. This year, the vision is for the events to culminate into an annual larger event on a central topic, which will happen with the first annual True Conversations Live Event on September 30th in Baltimore. The topic this year is entrepreneurship, and the event will feature a screening of the She Started It documentary as well as the true conversations panel discussion with local female entrepreneurs. Being that September 30th is International Podcast day, Meghan is inviting local podcasters to come to the event for free, interview people and cover the event. Live interactions and conversations online A few months ago Meghan began to do weekly Facebook lives every Thursday at 7pm Eastern as another way to connect with the community, get to know each other and give them space to share their feelings about some of the current issues that affect our lives privately and professionally. Meghan finds there’s a different exchange that can happen when it is live instead of just having it in comments where the tone of voice can be misconstrued or intentions misunderstood. It’s a meeting point for people of different ethnicities, socio-economic status and career paths asking each other questions, while Meghan just facilitates. For now, it’s on Facebook Live. Meghan said when she first started doing Facebook lives she made all the mistakes, but the lesson for her is that when faced with something new and uncomfortable, see yourself as a student and just do it. One mistake she did make is to randomly just pop on, instead of letting people know ahead of time when she’d be live. That’s why they set up the consistent expectation of the regular Thursday 7 o’clock schedule. She says that picking a consistent schedule is not only healthy for you as a person with a busy life, but it’s more helpful for your audience so they can plug in much more frequently. The Power of the Podcast Meghan’s hope and why she chose podcasting as one of their platforms is because it’s a wonderfully powerful tool to have and promote social change. If you’re in this space, just like with any other media, you can use it for entertainment, and people do need places to escape and zone out for a little while. But Meghan’s advice is to be conscious of how you’re influencing and perpetuating social norms and culture, and use that power responsibly. Even if you’re not talking about deep, heavy topics but are more in the education or entertainment space, use the power for good so that you are spreading a happier, healthier message. If people are listening, you have the opportunity to influence them in a good way. MetaMoment: Today’s podcast MetaMoment is…The School of Podcasting with Dave Jackson. This is always one of my top podcasts to listen to every week. I started listening in late 2012 and haven’t missed an episode since. In episode 582, Dave opens it up to his listeners as they share some “Um, Yeah, No” moments. This is when someone reaches out to you as a podcaster, pitching themselves - but it is clearly not a good fit. In fact, some of them are hilariously off target. You definitely want to check this episode out, and subscribe so you don’t miss future episodes either. This MetaMoment has been brought to your by Libsyn. They are the media host I use and the number 1 place I recommend as I work with new podcasters. I’ve been recommending them for several years now. They are not a sponsor, but I have recently become an affiliate for them, so if you sign up with Libsyn and use the coupon code ‘JOSH’ you can receive a free month of hosting. In fact it’s more than a month because you’ll get the rest of this month and next month free - just make sure you don’t change your hosting level before the free month ends. Again, go to Libsyn.com and sign up using the code ‘JOSH.’ Thanks for taking the time for listening to this week’s episode of the Creative Studio. Let's Coach with Carolyn - Career Strategist, Leadership and Life Coach
During the month of November many of us stop, reflect and express gratitude for all the many blessings in our lives. For some, this isn't an easy thing to do. What we experience in life shapes our attitude, actions and behaviors. When we travel a path filled with challenges, we can take on a negative view of life. This negative view and attitude can block you from obtaining the success you truly desire. Our guest this week could have chosen such a path, but despite starting her life with so many barriers, she chose to make peace with her past and adopted an attitude of gratitude. Meghan Enriquez is the Founder and CEO of TRUE Conversations LLC, President of Asian Business Collective for Women, and an independent consultant with Arbonne International, a vegan skin care, cosmetic, and nutrition company. She has a background in psychology with extensive experience in behavior change and leadership, research, and business. Her studies and experience brought her naturally to the creation of TRUE. TRUE provides a platform for well rounded, unedited conversation and resources around the most stigmatized and private issues of today in an effort to develop a peaceful, fulfilling life and empathetic, compassionate world. Meghan has herself walked a path that is filled with stigma, but she was able to triumph and not become a victim to her circumstances. In this episode of Let's Coach, Meghan will share her very personal and emotional story with you showing you can free yourself from the past and learn to experience gratitude in your life. You will learn how you can adopt your own practice of gratitude opening your heart to give and receive abundance and lead a full and enriched life.

Centering our conversation around how we Strengthen our Core physically, emotionally, and spirituality, Meghan Enriquez CEO of TRUE Conversations talks this week to Creator and CEO of Keep Me Tight www.keepmetight.com, Shameeka Hunt. Sneak Peak: "Whether the women are pre or postpartum, and in athletics, when we talk about the core it is really getting down to the foundations. For me I went through that drastic change emotionally and physically because of how I looked and how my clothes didn't fit... I had c sections so I lost a lot of that muscle memory. I can lose some of that lack of self love and self doubt and transform that into what do I have control over and what can I do to be a better me? As women we are very hard on ourselves. When I step into and say, our core is everything, that is a center that gives us strength that give us alignment and strength and stability... I want to serve as a tool to push you and empower you. When I empower you then you have a decision to make for yourself, you can't look back and say 'I didn't know.'" Grab a glass of wine or coffee and listen to this hour of true conversation for the entire family.
Alison Bucklin, a mother and wife raising a Vegan family, talks to True Conversations about what made her decide to personally become a vegan, why she is raising her now 3 old daughter that way and what impact it is having on the sustainability of the environment, her family's health and animal rights. What may surprise is what we uncover about health, and how the decision to be vegan is not just about loving animals or saving the planet, it is a personal way to positively prevent disease, even cancer.

What would that dinner table conversation look like?" - CEO of True Conversations "I would say, Son, the only person who will ever agree with you 100% in politics, is yourself." - Anne Arundel Councilman Jerry Walker
