In this episode of The Ganjapreneur Podcast, host TG Branfalt speaks with Laura Trujillo and Amanda Terpstra, co-founders of BestBuds, a woman- and Hispanic-owned dispensary based in Woodbury, New Jersey. Lifelong friends turned business partners, Laura and Amanda share their remarkable story of bootstrapping a licensed cannabis retail business from the ground up—navigating community pushback, lawsuits, zoning battles, and a grueling fundraising process along the way. Together, they break down how their complementary skills, entrepreneurial drive, and deep community engagement helped them overcome early resistance in a small-town setting. The conversation touches on fundraising challenges for women and minority founders, the changing product landscape in New Jersey, and why staffing and personality fit are critical to cannabis retail success. It's an inspiring and highly practical look at what it really takes to open—and sustain—a dispensary in today's regulated environment.

How did early moderns experience sense and space? How did the expanding cultural, political, and social horizons of the period emerge out of those experiences and further shape them? Senses of Space in the Early Modern World (Cambridge University Press, 2024) by Dr. Nicholas Terpstra takes an approach that is both global expansive and locally rooted by focusing on four cities as key examples: Florence, Amsterdam, Boston, and Manila. They relate to distinct parts of European cultural and colonialist experience from north to south, republican to monarchical, Catholic to Protestant. Without attempting a comprehensive treatment, the Element aims to convey the range of distinct experiences of space and sense as these varied by age, gender, race, and class. Readers see how sensory and spatial experiences emerged through religious cultures which were themselves shaped by temporal rhythms, and how sound and movement expressed gathering economic and political forces in an emerging global order. This title is also available as Open Access on Cambridge Core. This interview was conducted by Dr. Miranda Melcher whose new book focuses on post-conflict military integration, understanding treaty negotiation and implementation in civil war contexts, with qualitative analysis of the Angolan and Mozambican civil wars. “With grief, for me personally, the main thing is letting myself feel it and not trying to pretend it hasn't happened…Rather than hiding it, I give myself permission to deal with it. (Wycombe student) What we know for sure is that at some point the girls in our life will grieve a loss in their family, in their school or church community, in their world. It might be a break up with a first true love, a move away from friends, the loss of an adored pet, a parents' divorce, the loss of a safe relationship–or worse, the death of a loved one, and might likely be a loss of a relationship that sustained her through thick and thin. She will be heartbroken. Walking the path of sorrow and sadness with her can break our hearts, too. Every type of grief is different and every one of us grieves differently; there is no grief handbook, but that is not a reason to dodge this important conversation. Listen in as Angela Terpstra, the Head of School at Bishop Strachan School in Canada, shares her compelling story of leading her school community through several significant losses. It is in the times of deepest loss that we lean heaviest into the communities that know and support us. Angela's story inspires even as it reminds us why connecting a girl to her grief, and supporting her as she walks “with” grief can help her shape and reframe the many and varied emotions that will flow from that loss.

Sarala Terpstra is an American plant-based cookbook author, blogger, and avid Francophile. She dreamed of moving to France for over a decade before she finally made it happen in the fall of 2021. Sarala is consciously creating her dream life in France- one of the slow happy days, eating seasonally, and in classic style.  Sarala first fell in love with France on a summer trip to Europe, after graduating from high school. When she returned to the U.S., she enrolled in French classes at university and went on to study abroad in France. After university, she traveled and moved extensively- living in the Caribbean, Europe, China, India, and various states in the U.S.But all the while she was dreaming of settling in France. She found ways to immerse herself in the French language and culture, especially through cooking. After adopting a plant-based diet in an effort to eat healthier and more sustainably- she began experimenting with veganzing classic French recipes. What she found was that when the concepts of French cooking were applied to plants, exciting new flavors and dishes were created. The results were both novel and timeless!Sarala has now written two cookbooks on plant-based French cuisine and can generally be found experimenting in her kitchen in France, perusing the markets for pretty vegetables and antiques, and people watching at cafés for style inspiration. This is session 2 of Journalism for Liberation & Combat. If you missed session 1, Journalism for Liberation & Combat was a mini-course that Jared Ware (Jay from MAKC) helped convene along with Brooke Terpstra who is an organizer with Oakland Abolition & Solidarity. We worked closely to put this together with Jared Ball from imixwhatilike and Black Power Media, and with a number of other radical journalists who you will hear from throughout the series.  Brooke Terpstra titled Session 2: “From Survival to Winning - Hegemony and Liberation on the Ground.” Both Brooke and Jared Ware cover the presentation in this session and the Jared Ball returns for a Q&A answering questions from the participants in the Journalism for Liberation & Combat course on the heels of Session 1 which Jared Ball gave the main presentation. This conversation is really about making the concepts of culture and hegemony real for folks and about sharing a media struggle from the coverage of the Prison Strike in 2018 which Brooke and Jay were very involved in as members of the Prison Strike Media Relations team for that action. There is a brief introductory conversation from Brooke and Jay on this session, and there is a lengthy Q&A with Jay, Brooke and Jared Ball at the end of the conversation. These sessions took place over zoom, and you can watch this session in its totality over on Black Power Media (session 1 also!) which is a great channel on Youtube with tons of amazing content from a Black Left perspective.  There was also a syllabus to the course, which we recommend you check out.
