20 years ago, Starbreeze Studios was going through some tough times, and they were looking for one of their games to be the hit they needed. Across the water, Hollywood actor Vin Diesel was looking to get into video games with his new company called Tigon Studios. So, they decided to come together, and they launched a stealth-FPS in 2004. We're talking The Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay.On this episode of Stealth Boom Boom, we take a look at the developer's really rocky path to their first Riddick game, and discuss whether the general public would be excited about seeing Normal Mapping on the box. We also mention late 90s / early 00s rapper Xzibit and his thoughts on Pac-Man.In our review, you'll hear some chat on how this game is as dark as Splinter Cell and Thief, but not as deep; the oddity that is Eyeshine; our feelings towards the trade off of a sleek and minimal HUD vs ambiguity when it comes to the safe zone of an enemy's vision cone; Adam's preview of Assault on Dark Athena; being a Batman-like predator; trigger happy guards that are standing behind a door waiting for you; some of us think the shooting isn't very good, some of us think the shooting is good, but all of us quite liked it for some reason; The Darkness; a more involved melee system; The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild; side quest-giving NPCs; where the prison guards live and shop; a little story about a horrible place; NanoMED treats you right; Richard B. Riddick is a nasty piece of work; and an outrageously sexy menu cube. After all that, we take you through what some of the critics were saying about the game around the time it came out, and then we give you our final verdicts on whether The Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay is a Pass, a Play, or an Espionage Explosion. For those who would like to play along at home, we'll be discussing, reviewing and dissecting Murdered: Soul Suspect on the next episode of Stealth Boom Boom.IMPORTANT LINKS TO THINGS

The Darkness is a first-person shooter video game developed by Starbreeze Studios and published by 2K Games for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. The game was released in 2007 in North America and Europe and it is based on The Darkness comic book series published by Top Cow Productions. A sequel titled The Darkness II was released in 2012.[1] The player takes on the role of Jackie Estacado (Kirk Acevedo), with the story presented through narration by himself. On the evening of his 21st birthday, Jackie is targeted for assassination by his "Uncle" Paulie Franchetti (Dwight Schultz) out of sheer paranoia that Jackie is after his position as the Don. As night falls, the Darkness (Mike Patton) - an ancient demonic force which has inhabited Jackie's bloodline for generations - violently manifests and massacres his pursuers. With his new powers, Jackie gradually dismantles Paulie's drug and money laundering operations. Condemned: Criminal Origins[a] is a first-person survival horror video game developed by Monolith Productions and published by Sega. It was released worldwide in 2005 on the Xbox 360, with a Microsoft Windows version released in 2006. With the developer citing films such as The Silence of the Lambs, Seven, and Saw as inspiration, the game places an emphasis on melee combat and puzzle solving, including searching for fingerprints and gathering evidence. Upon release, Condemned was met with moderate-to-good reviews by players and critics. Many reviewers cited its storyline and lack of progression as the game's biggest faults, while its solid controls and fresh approach to horror were praised. A sequel, Condemned 2: Bloodshot, was released in 2008 for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. There was also an internet prequel and a planned film adaptation to expand the Condemned franchise. ********************************************************************** Grab a beer, a slice of pizza and come hang out with us. What does it mean to hold the intellectual property rights to a title like "The Walking Dead" and why would Skybound suddenly cut off an agreement just months after product release? On this episode of Video Games 2 the MAX, Sean Garmer and Marc Morrison discuss quite a few topics. Not to mention, they have listened to the audience and commenters as well. Welcome to their first video podcast. What will hopefully be the first of many to come. The guys begin talking about CBS doing a Gamers Choice Awards. What it means for the industry to now have two award shows basically back to back. Will this one be good? What do they think of the actual awards? And will the celebrities help or hurt the show? They also talk about Starbreeze Studios issues thanks to a bad game. Loot Boxes possibly being investigated by the Federal Trade Commission. Fallout 76 being investigated for a potential lawsuit, and what nylon bags have to do it. They also talk about the possible surprises and games we could see at the Game Awards. One name that won't be there is Rocksteady. Who aren't making a Superman game, as many speculated? But what are they making? Plus, Daredevil canceled. Evangelion is coming to Netflix. Marc talks Just Cause 4 and Detroit: Become Human. While Sean talks Bendy and the Ink Machine and Nairi: Tower of Shirin. Both guys get excited about Persona Dancing and Super Smash Bros. too.

It was so awesome to have Johan join us and share his journey from being a character artist to becoming a hair specialist. Before becoming a freelance hair specialist for the game and film industries, Johan worked at Starbreeze Studios in Stockholm on The Walking Dead, focusing primarily on hair production and general character R&D using Unreal Engine. During the conversation, Johan also walked us through some of the more technical elements of hair production. This is Player Characters, and if you're a fan of video games and you want to get a job that has something to do with games, this show is for you. Maybe you're thinking about becoming a youtuber, a streamer, a producer, a journalist or a creative like Jens. I want to help you do that. Highlights from this episode: Jens started programming BASIC on his fathers computer and later joined the local swedish demo scene. Helped Magnus Högdahl start Starbreeze Studios and became Programmer #2 there. At one point, things were going so badly, that they had to ask for unemployment benefits, but they kept working on games in their free time. Jens left StarBreeze because he wanted something different than big AAA game development. He still accepted a job at LucasArts though. But that job turned out to be something quite different to what he signed up for. Now he's back in Sweden and has spend the last five years with his own tiny games studio, working on the very indie Yoku's Island Express, a sort of pinball metroidvania.

After a poorly received attempt to revive the Wolfenstein franchise in 2009, many expected the franchise to wither away into obscurity. That is, until MachineGames, a developer formed from ex-members of Starbreeze Studios, took charge of the series and attempted to breathe life into the series one more time in 2014. They succeeded and created the adrenaline-fueled game (with a surprisingly tender heart) about a brain damaged soldier kicking off a new resistance movement against the Nazis in an alternate timeline where the Nazis were able to conquer the world. "Gameplay and story are equals" - It's very common for games to be set up in a manner where the controller merely acts as just as a device to perform the actions of the character(s). Starbreeze Studios decided that the all aspects of Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons should be treated as equals. The big question at hand for the guys is, does the game's controller schematic work? Does it create the impact that the game wants the player to feel? Is the game better off being a co-op experience? These are some of the questions and more that the gentlemen discuss. In addition to the main feature, the guys catch up on other games they've been delving into in their spare time.
Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons was born from the vision of filmmaker Josef Fares. Fares, a Lebanese refugee, managed to escape the country's civil war in 1987 and relocate to Sweden with his family. He became a prolific director in the Swedish film world and made Jalla! Jalla! one of the most popular films in the country. Released by Starbreeze Studios in 2013, Brothers adopted a highly unconventional dual joystick control scheme for its isometric adventure game. It became an instant critical darling, but what did it do right to earn that praise? Perhaps things are different when revisiting the game from a 2017 perspective. Is Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons worthy of the praise it received for its cinematic vision and unique control scheme? Is it one of the best games period? Bob Cooney and Brooks Brown of Starbreeze Studios, the game developer behind the successful Payday series, speak at VR Los Angeles. Brown and the company built an extremely high-end headset, the Star VR. Brown and Cooney talk about the catching up the industry needs to do, how the promise of VR was made over 30 years ago and the pressure that companies are feeling to deliver on that promise. Brown argues that there is exciting content for VR out there, but the problem is curating it and making it accessible to the masses.
