"Jesus Stories" is a chronological telling of the life of Jesus in an informal, informative, and interesting way. I tell these stories without a "preacher" filter. But, I do explain the customs of the time so that we in our 21st century world can understand what was happening in the first century. I leave the application and interpretation up to you. You make up your mind about how these words and actions should impact you — or if they should impact you.
WHAT HAPPENS IN THIS EPISODE: In this Jesus Stories episode, we examine the question of costs. Have you ever considered the value of the Kingdom of God? Jesus explains this to us. Given its value, then, what is the cost to follow Jesus into the Kingdom of God? Jesus explains that to us, too. We take a deep dive into these questions as we consider “The Cost For Following Jesus.” This is a tough teaching to hear. But, it is crucial to understand what Jesus asks of us as followers. We watch as Jesus stills a storm at sea. And we meet a man who is possessed by a Legion of demons – until Jesus meets him. What Happens in this Episode? We resume the narrative from episode #4-34. Jesus is in the midst of a crowd of thousands of people. People are stepping all over each other – in spite of Jesus rough teaching to the Pharisees. Now Jesus turns to these people with his own warnings about the Pharisees. He continues with a challenge to speak up for him even when it is difficult. He teaches about greed and repeats a lesson we heard in the Sermon on the Mount – don't worry. He reminds his listeners to be ready; ready to serve, ready for Jesus to return. What Happens in This Episode? In this episode of Jesus Stories, we find out who supports Jesus and his disciples financially. We see the opposition to Jesus' ministry increase. But we also see Jesus fighting back with some very “to the point” teaching. In this episode, Jesus is accused of working in league with the devil after he throws a demon out of a man. Jesus corrects that misconception with some simple logic. Then he refuses the Pharisees demand for a miraculous sign; he changes the definition for family; and roundly condemns the hypocrisy of the Pharisees and teachers of the law. What Happens in This Episode? In this Jesus Stories episode, we'll spend some time talking about faith. In our last episode, Jesus had three encounters with people that demonstrated some kind of faith. One example was faith that was unusual for the person holding it. Another was a questioning faith. Finally, there was the faith of a very sinful woman. What do these encounters teach us? How did Jesus respond to them? We answer these questions in this episode. Jesus starts by getting into our wallets and our stuff. “Don't store up treasures here on earth…” He tells us not to worry since Jehovah God will take care of his followers. He reminds us that judgment of others brings judgment back upon us. We can only judge with the guidance of Jehovah God. Then he points out the choices that we must make. Which road will we travel? What Happens in this Episode? This Jesus Stories episode goes deeper into Jesus' teachings concerning the commands of the Law. We review the last four of these teachings: concerning divorce, making and keeping vows, revenge, and loving our enemies. What does Jesus tell us about these issues? How does he expect us to keep these exacting standards? What does he offer to help us? We answer all of these questions in this episode! Scriptures Referenced in this Episode: Matthew 5:31-32 Matthew 5:33-37 Matthew 5:38-42 Luke 6:31 Matthew 5:43-47 Luke 6:32-36 Romans 6:3 (The Message) Find us on Social Media: Facebook Instagram Twitter/X You Tube Unless otherwise indicated, all Scripture quotations are taken from the Holy Bible, New Living Translation, copyright © 1996, 2004, 2015 by Tyndale House Foundation. What Happens In This Episode? We continue reviewing Jesus' teaching from the Sermon on the Mount. Jesus challenges his listeners with his look at “the Law”. He outlines what the law says and continues with “but I say” to explain the expectation that Jehovah God held. In each case, the heart of the individual was to match the observed behavior. He talks about divorce, vows, retribution, and loving your enemies. Then he moves to talk about the acts of worship given to Jehovah God. In talking about giving, praying and fasting, he warns against posturing before “our Father” – an unusual term for his Jewish listeners. He warns that such posturing is its own reward. There is no heavenly reward to follow. Jesus compares the sayings of the Law – "You have heard it said" – with the intention his Father had for the saying – "But I tell you". We talk about the commands “do not murder” and “do not commit adultery.” What is Jehovah God really saying in these commands? How does it mean we are to act now? What Happens In This Episode This Jesus Story episode continues our look at the Sermon on the Mount. We move from the Beatitudes to woes – the opposite of blessings – for those who are not seeking and submitting to Jehovah. Jesus then considers the character of his followers as salt and light and addresses what may have been some misconceptions about his teaching raised by the religious leaders of the day. He contrasts the teachings of the law with the teaching of those religious leaders, specifically addressing six teachings. We talk about the first two of those teachings. WHAT HAPPENS IN THIS EPISODE? This episode of Jesus Stories will complete the confrontation between Jesus and the religious leaders of the day; including the proof that Jesus presents for his identity. He makes these leaders even madder when his disciples “harvest” grain and eat it on the Sabbath and he heals a man in the synagogue on the Sabbath. Finally, he leaves the city and goes out to the Sea Galilee only to be met with a crowd of people needing healing and exorcisms. All of this fulfills prophecy told 600 years before by Isaiah. I promised a map for you to reference! Here it is! WHAT HAPPENS IN THIS EPISODE? This episode of Jesus Stories takes us into some deep theological territory. Jesus will heal a man on the Sabbath and then be taken to task for such an action by the religious leaders of the day. So, Jesus takes the time to explain exactly who he is and by what authority he is able to do such a thing. Such authority, he says, comes from His Father – a blasphemous statement to these religious leaders. But Jesus doesn't back down. We learn much about Jesus in this episode. What Happens in this Episode? In this week's Jesus Stories episode, we continue telling the narrative of Jesus' ministry in Galilee. We start in Capernaum – Jesus' home base – where he teaches and, again, confronts an evil spirit. This is followed by more teaching and lots of healings. We'll see two well-known healings: Peter's mother-in-law and the man let down through the roof of an over-crowded house. Jesus calls Levi (Matthew) and then attends a party which Levi throws for him. In these last instances, Jesus confronts the attitudes of the Pharisees and the teachers of the Law. Here is a reference map of the region covered in today's show. What Happens In This Episode: This Jesus Stories episode breaks down the reaction to Jesus' teaching in various places in Galilee. Who listened to Him? Did they believe Him? If they believed, how did they act? If they didn't believe, how did they act? What does this mean for you and me? Do we believe Jesus? If so, what do we do about it? Join me as explore these questions and understand the implications of the answers that we find. What Happens In This Episode: In this Jesus Stories, we meet several people who have different reactions to Jesus and his teaching. The residents of Sychar believe Jesus. So does a government official from Capernaum. But, the Jews in Jesus home synagogue and some other Jews decided that they didn't believe. Some fishermen believed after seeing an awesome catch. And evil spirits knew who Jesus was but not his purpose. The question I ask at the beginning is this: Whom do you believe? (We'll talk more about that question in the next episode.) The demonstration of Jesus teaching from the boat can be found on this YouTube link. In This Episode This episode delves deeper into the passion of John the Baptist for becoming less as Jesus becomes more. That humility translates into example from the story of Jesus and the Samaritan Woman. Jesus shares with her the concept of worship that Jehovah God seeks – worship in spirit and in truth. How do John the Baptist and Jesus himself exemplify this principle? What does that mean for you and me? Listen as I tie these concepts together for a greater understanding of both. What Happens In This Episode As we open this week's Jesus Stories, the Jesus' disciples think that they are in competition with John the Baptist. However, Jesus sets them straight on this point. Even John informs us of his non-competitive position; he will become less while Jesus becomes greater. Jesus and his disciples leave Judea and head to Galilee. They take the short route through the region of Samaria. Jesus stops to rest and we drop in on another interesting conversation between Jesus and a woman from Samaria – a person whom Jesus shouldn't have been talking with – if he listened to the culture. Jesus spoke with her, identified himself to her, and gave her water that would be life for her and her village. We talk about Jesus claim that “you must be born again” and his statement that he “came down from heaven.” What do these claims really mean for you and me? What Happens in This Episode? In this week's Jesus Stories, we listen in to a conversation between Nicodemus and Jesus – a conversation which occurred under the cover of darkness. Nicodemus, as one of the religious leaders of the Jewish people, had some deep questions for Jesus; and Jesus has some deeper answers for Nicodemus. We'll delve into the conversation, explaining what is going on as it occurs. This conversation will take us further into understanding the Holy Spirit and the idea of being “born again.” We'll look at what is probably the most quoted verse from the scriptures and think about the meaning of that verse. And we'll wrap up with some of the images from the Old Testament which Jesus used to communicate his message to Nicodemus. (You may need to look these scriptures up from the links below.) Check the next podcast for an even deeper understanding of Jesus' teaching!!! What Happens In This Episode? Can a man change? He may not be able to; but Jesus can change him. Today's Jesus Stories episode features a man known for successful dirty political tricks; tricks which will elect a politician to office. But, when the tricks are found and the pressure is on, an encounter with Jesus changes this man's attitude, behavior, and life. Now his entire life is centered on Jesus – even while in jail. He creates a ministry that still operates today after his death. Come meet this extraordinary man. Do you have a Jesus Story to share?
