The Rocky Road hits its 200th episode during Paddy's week – so who better to have on than the King of New York himself, Ireland's John Duddy. He had a famous fan in Jake LaMotta and later worked closely with Robert DeNiro, who had starred as The Bronx Bull in Martin Scorsese's epic Raging Bull back in 1980. Even today he's boxing royalty in the Big Apple but John Duddy is also a son of Derry and an Irish boxing cult hero, someone who helped popularise professional boxing in the early noughties, leading to a wave of up and coming fighters to follow their dreams either at home or across the pond. Show that you can become a big name in Dublin and you could be labelled ‘the next Bernard Dunne'. Show that you're ready to break the Big Apple and you might, you just might, be labelled ‘the next John Duddy'. The Derry Destroyer fought nine times at Madison Square Garden between 2005 and 2010 – winning them all – and lost just twice in a 31-fight career. At one stage he was right in the mix to fight for the middleweight championship of the world – which LaMotta held between 1949 and 1951 – but boxing had other plans for him. John wrapped up his career in 2011 when he realised his hunger had dimmed, cancelling an all-Irish match-up with Andy Lee, and, bitten by the acting bug, he's never looked back. He's still involved in the sport to this day, spearheading a new programme with the Moving Brains Foundation which put on 54 two-hour sessions for people with Parkinsons Disease in 2024 – and continues to grow and grow. And he is also coaching at Trinity Boxing in New York City, a stone's throw from the World Trade Centre, with the hope of one day opening his own gym. In Part 1, we look back at John's early years in the Irish amateur ranks, his determination to unseat Michael Roche as light-middleweight champ and the Corkman's incredible gesture before he finally did, his boxing pals who made it all so enjoyable, and hunkering down to avoid a hurricane in Cuba during a training camp. We also discuss the links in the chain that go from his early life until now – his uncle Jackie, his dad Michael, Charlie Nash, Ken Buchanan, Barry McGuigan and Roberto Duran. This is the ultimate Rocky story. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
Parkinson's Disease has long been a clinical diagnosis. But recently, there have been proposals to redefine the disease based on biomarkers of alpha-synucleinopathy and dopaminergic dysfunction. A similar shift has already occurred in Alzheimer disease, with the “amyloid, tau, and neurodegeneration,” or ATN, classification system. Our guest today, Michael Okun, is is Professor of Neurology and Director of the Norman Fixel Institute for Neurological Diseases at the University of Florida and medical advisor for the Parkinson's Foundation. He co-authored an op-ed in JAMA last summer in JAMA arguing that there would be benefits to a biological definition of Parkinson's - but there would also be risks. He'll unpack both sides of this debate today with Dr. Christine Doss Esper, Associate Professor of Neurology at Emory University. Series 6, Episode 5 Featuring: Guest: Dr. Michael Okun, is Professor of Neurology and Director of the Norman Fixel Institute for Neurological Diseases at the University of Florida and medical advisor for the Parkinson's Foundation Interviewer: Dr. Christine Doss Esper, Associate Professor of Neurology at Emory University Disclosures: None

We've never done this before but Zig really felt he needed to devote this entire episode to the state of the 2024 presidential race post debate. Monday morning saw Joe Biden calling into his favorite show to deliver the message he'd already put out in writing - "I ain't going anywhere" (0:00-15:15). Why the ABC George Stephanopoulos interview settled nothing but we did find out that even the Lord Almighty might have trouble getting Joe to back out (15:15-42:50). A hospital stay can be a stressful situation for everyone, whether you are the person receiving care or the support person providing comfort. People with Parkinson's (PD) are at a higher risk of hospitalizations, so it is crucial to be prepared ahead of time for when the situation arises. The Parkinson's Foundation recently created the Hospital Safety Guide, which is the updated and improved version of the former Aware in Care kit. The Guide incorporates information from the kit, but now highlights the “Five Parkinson's Care Needs”, which is a tool for communicating your needs and priorities with hospital staff. It also includes a Hospital Planner checklist with step-by-step instructions on how to create a hospital “go bag” for emergencies. The Guide provides infographics and real-life examples from people with Parkinson's and loved ones who have solved common problems relating to their PD when in the hospital. In this episode, Annie Brooks, Director of Strategic Initiatives at the Parkinson's Foundation, discusses features of the new Hospital Safety Guide and how best to use it.

Alice A. Holstein, Ed.D was diagnosed with bipolar mood disorder at the age of 51, which interrupted her career and produced some 12 years of intense suffering with many manic episodes, many hospitalizations, thousands of dollars spent and overall, a bleak prognosis of recovery. She lives now, as an elder, with a full if careful life of extraordinary wellness despite still being on medication. She has a dramatic story to share about how she developed a revolutionary understanding of mental health recovery which she believes can be at least partially related to recovery with Parkinsons. In her presentation she will explain this potential correlation by first enumerating the comparisons, such as that she too was given a bleak prognosis and told that heavy medication was required. She also understands that Parkinson's can often produce depression in those who suffer. Her thoughts can help people specifically deal with that diagnosis. Alice believes that illness in general should be treated as a whole person approach---holistically, to include mental, emotional, physical, spiritual and social aspects. The medical profession does not proceed in this fashion. She accidentally discovered this more complete framework and has developed specific understandings that may be helpful to those dealing with Parkinsons. She also believes that recovery is partly a matter of developing one's higher consciousness. Her ideas and words will likely challenge, inspire and encourage the listeners on this broadcast to continue and add to the kinds of things they already are doing to improve their conditions vs. degenerate. Her example serves as a beacon of hope to living a healthier life regardless of one's diagnosis, going beyond present practices to achieve stronger wellness and increased satisfaction. In the article, Dr. Bloem et al. write, "Although the survival of people with Parkinson's has improved over time, people with Parkinson's still live fewer years than their age- and sex-matched population comparators, albeit at older ages this difference can be small." Dr. Bloem and his co-authors also acknowledge that doctors and researchers "often emphasize the tremendous impact of [Parkinson's] on an individual's life. However, in public awareness campaigns, we largely avoid discussions on the survival of people with Parkinson's..." It's understandable: the topic of mortality and Parkinson's is often painful. However, in this episode of The Parkinson's Podcast, Dr. Bloem argues out that openly acknowledging that Parkinson's shortens lifespans is a good thing for people with Parkinson's for a multiple reasons. Listen to the episode to hear Dr. Bloem's perspective about multiple topics related to mortality and Parkinson's, including: The commonly held view that people die with Parkinson's, not from Parkinson's Pesticides, chemical exposure, and other environmental risks Reasons for hope, including specific advice about exercise and diet The policy and funding implications of candid discussion of mortality in Parkinson's Loving the Parkinson's Podcast? A 30 year career as an NHS nurse didn't help Jo Tosh to piece together the strange symptoms she started to experience as being the first signs that she was suffering with Parkinsons Disease. But them why would she, she was only in her mid forties and Parkinson's is an old persons disease isn't it? It was one of the many lessons Jo has learnt in the eight years since her diagnosis, and one of the reasons she has become a determined advocate for other Parkinsons sufferers and campaigner for better recognition of the disease and more to be done to find new treatments and, hopefully, eventually a cure. Jo talks about the way Parkinson's has affected her, how she's learnt to live with the potentially crushing uncertainty of its progression and find not just joy and purpose but something altogether unexpected as well. When Academy-Award winning filmmaker Davis Guggenheim set out to make Still, a film about Michael J. Fox, he imagined he'd be making a hybrid documentary/80s movie. What he discovered along the way, however, was something deeper: his subject is far more than an iconic mega-star — Michael is an inspiration. After decades of living with the degenerative and debilitating effects of Parkinson's disease, Michael J. Fox reveals his personal philosophy: “With gratitude, optimism is sustainable.” Katie's conversation with Michael and Davis is funny and revealing, and traces the highs and lows of creating a film about an incurable optimist trying to overcome an incurable disease.
