To Screen or Not To Screen" delves into the complex and deeply personal dilemma of early Alzheimer's disease screening. Imagine a test that could reveal your brain's future, decades before symptoms appear. Would you take it? This episode confronts the anxieties and potential benefits of such knowledge, particularly for those with a family history of dementia. Doctors Andy Lazarus and Alan Rot join host Jen Fink to dissect the realities of early screening. They discuss the limitations of current medical training on dementia, and the potential for false positives. False positives can lead to a psychological burden of a pre-symptomatic diagnosis. They challenge the notion that early detection automatically leads to effective interventio. By questioning the efficacy of current treatments and the influence of pharmaceutical companies, we might deliver better outcomes. They stress lifestyle changes. These are critical. Purpose in life is important. Open talks are needed. Discuss end-of-life care. This episode urges listeners to think. Consider early screening's true value. Prioritize holistic brain health. Take proactive approaches. Our Guests: Dr. Andy Lazris & Dr. Alan Roth Dr. Andy Lazris and Dr. Alan Roth have over 75 years of experience in medicine between them. In their new book, A RETURN TO HEALING, they draw on their expertise in primary care to unravel the complexities of the modern health care system. Alzheimer's Care - Know Your Limits

Alzheimer's Care - know your limits. Caring for a loved one with Alzheimer's, especially early-onset, presents unique challenges. This episode features Irene, who shares her personal journey of caring for her husband diagnosed at just 51. Irene discusses the initial warning signs she noticed, including social withdrawal and increased forgetfulness, and the difficulty of balancing work, family, and caregiving. She candidly describes the emotional and physical toll of caregiving, the lack of limits, and the point at which she realized she couldn't do it alone, and the difficult but loving decision to move her husband to memory care. Irene emphasizes the importance of self-care for caregivers and the need to recognize personal limits. She also highlights the relief and unexpected benefits that memory care can provide, both for the individual with Alzheimer's and their families. This episode offers valuable insights and support for anyone navigating the complexities of Alzheimer's care. It is definitely a warning on setting and understanding your limits. A Bit From Irene's Book We left the doctor's office and my head started spinning. I couldn't remember where I had parked the car. Quite miraculously, Robert managed to navigate us to the correct floor of the parking garage despite my that all hope had been sucked out of me. I had been struggling to cope since our last appointment with the family doctor, but receiving this final blow was brutal. I put my left hand on the side of the car, leaned over, and threw up. It was just bile. I had to push something out of me—denial, anger, angst—I didn't know. Wiping my mouth, my snotty nose and my tear-stained face with jittery hands I leaned heavily against the back of the car. I took a long, shaky breath in and out in an attempt to pull myself together. So began the journey with her husband who is diagnosed with early onset Dementia at the age of 51. 'Forgiving the Man Who Forgot' carries you along one woman's journey of love, honesty, disappointment and courage, detailing her life before, during and after her husband's diagnosis of early onset Dementia. It's crucial to move away from this chaos and find moments of calm. By creating a more peaceful environment, both the caregiver and the person with dementia can experience improved quality of life. This means less stress, better communication, and more meaningful interactions. Taking that first step can be daunting, but there's support available. The "Sandwich Generation" faces the complex challenge of caring for both their children and aging parents. These sandwich caregivers are pulled in multiple directions, balancing the demands of work with the needs of multiple generations. Imagine juggling school events and doctor's appointments, while also navigating the financial and legal complexities of elder care. Sandwich caregivers often find themselves coordinating transportation, managing medications, and addressing the emotional needs of both their children and parents. It's a constant balancing act, with sandwich caregivers feeling the pressure from both sides. Family dynamics can further complicate the situation, as siblings may have differing opinions on caregiving responsibilities. This sandwich generation role can be incredibly demanding, leaving caregivers feeling overwhelmed and emotionally drained. However, there are strategies to help manage these challenges. Seeking support from other family members, friends, or support groups can provide much-needed relief. Exploring community resources like respite care or adult day care can offer temporary breaks for sandwich caregivers. Prioritizing self-care and setting realistic expectations are also crucial for navigating this demanding phase of life. Our Guest: Nicole Smith is sandwiched between caring for three aging parents and five children. She became immersed in the dementia dynamic when her mother was diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease in 2021. Dementia & Living Alone - It's Possible!

It's amazing how resilient the human spirit can be. I've spoken to folks living alone with dementia who find ingenious ways to adapt. One gentleman, a former engineer, rigged up his whole house with reminders – lights that flashed when it was time to take his medication, a talking clock that announced mealtimes... it was incredible! Of course, not everyone has that knack for invention, but there are simpler things that can make a world of difference. Things like..." Safety First...making sure the home is safe. You'd be surprised how a simple rug or a poorly lit hallway can become a hazard. One woman I spoke to, bless her heart, tripped over a phone cord and ended up with a broken hip. It's heartbreaking, but preventable!" Memory Reminders...little things to jog the memory. Like, labeling drawers with pictures of what's inside, or using a whiteboard calendar for appointments. I remember this lovely lady who used to lay out her clothes for the next day every evening, just like she did for her kids when they were small. It gave her a sense of control, you know?" Simplicity Makes it Happen...sticking to a routine. It's comforting, like a familiar path in the woods. This one fellow, a retired teacher, swore by his morning walk. Rain or shine, he'd be out there, getting his exercise and saying hello to his neighbors. It kept him connected to the world.” Our Guest: Michael Splaine is owner and principal in Splaine Consulting, a small advocacy and government affairs consulting firm based in Washington DC. Immediately prior to starting this company, Mike was Director of State Government Affairs in the Public Policy Division of the US Alzheimer's Association with whom he enjoyed a 23-year career, during which time he and his business partner Kate Gordon were the architects of the state AD plan strategy that started in 2007. Grief Speaks: Healing through Poetry

Play Episode Listen Later Nov 26, 2024 54:56

Poetry and spoken word offer a unique and powerful outlet for processing grief, especially for dementia caregivers who often experience anticipatory grief before their loved one's passing. The act of expressing emotions through words, rhythm, and rhyme can be cathartic, providing a tangible form to intangible feelings.    Writing or speaking about the complex journey of caregiving, the gradual loss of the person they knew, and the impending final loss, can help caregivers make sense of their experience. It allows them to acknowledge and validate their emotions, fostering a sense of acceptance and healing. Furthermore, poetry and spoken word provide a safe space for caregivers to explore the difficult emotions that may be associated with anticipatory grief, such as sadness, anger, guilt, and confusion. By giving voice to these feelings, caregivers can begin to release their emotional burden and find a sense of peace. The creative process itself can also be therapeutic. Choosing words, crafting metaphors, and finding rhythm can be a meditative experience, offering a much-needed respite from the demands of caregiving. Sharing their work with others, whether in a support group or through public performance, can foster connection and understanding, reminding caregivers that they are not alone. In essence, poetry and spoken word can be a lifeline for dementia caregivers navigating the turbulent waters of anticipatory grief, offering a channel for expression, healing, and connection. Are You A Caregiver Without Knowing It? (Intermittent Caregiving)

Play Episode Listen Later Nov 19, 2024 62:50

It's easy to overlook the ways we support others, especially when it comes to intermittent caregiving. Perhaps you help an elderly neighbor with yard work every few weeks, or regularly drive a friend to medical appointments. These acts of kindness, while seemingly small, constitute caregiving. Recognizing yourself as a caregiver, even if your contributions are sporadic, is crucial for several reasons.  Firstly, it validates the importance of the support you provide, acknowledging the positive impact you have on someone's life. Secondly, it opens doors to valuable resources and support networks designed specifically for caregivers.  These resources can offer information, guidance, and emotional support, helping you navigate the challenges and rewards of caregiving.  Finally, understanding your role as a caregiver allows you to prioritize your own well-being, ensuring you have the physical and emotional resources to continue providing care and support. Our guest: Tara Wilken - Courageously Living Tara has experienced significant periods of caregiving and loss throughout her life. Which has given her a profound understanding and empathy towards individuals facing similar situations. With 19 years of experience working in various corporate HR and HRIT roles, as both an employee and a consultant, Tara has merged her analytical expertise with her extensive knowledge of personal development and well-being to create tangible products for often intangible events. ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Related Episodes: Doctor Supports Caregivers Journey Challenges Caregiver Support: Personalized Text Message Connections ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Sign Up for more Advice & Wisdom - email newsletter. ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Please Support Our Sponsors So We Can Continue To Bring The Show to You For Free ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Make Your Brain Span Match Your LifeSpan Relevate from NeuroReserve With Relevate nutritional supplement, you get science-backed nutrition to help protect your brain power today and for years to come. Becoming a Savvy Caregiver

Play Episode Listen Later Sep 6, 2024 50:35

The Savvy Caregiver Program is a training program for caregivers like you. Caregiving is a role far different from being a spouse or child.  Those terms describe relationships. Assisting and guiding someone who is living with a chronic illness is the definition of caregiving. It is work. The caregiving role has a “job description”. Putting together the tasks, the helping, the cleaning up, watching, worrying, everything make up the caregivers job description. Hiring someone to do what you do isn't truly possible. With enough money you can hire people to do many of your caregiving tasks. However, the caregiver role is more than one person can handle. Caregiving is a job most of us never expected to have and are untrained to do properly. Lacking proper training leads to stress, frustration and sometimes injuries. Taking care of a person living with a demanding illness like Alzheimer's is specialized work. Doing this work successfully requires special skills and knowledge,  You also need an outlet and attitude that helps you look after yourself. Why Do I Need Caregiver Training? Being unprepared for the role of caregiver is common. Lacking awareness of available training or even the need for training is also common. Many family caregivers tackle their role as a caregiver in a way similar to raising children. Unfortunately, this method leads to a lot of stress, frustration and tears. Consider the situation you've found yourself in. Caregiving is likely very different from any other role you have experienced. Seeing, recognizing and understanding that difference are important first steps in appreciating the work you have undertaken as a caregiver. Most importantly, the Savvy Caregiver Program teaches you how to be a great caregiver. I attended the accelerated version (3 weeks vs 6) this past May. Learning how to be a better care partner to my Mom was a blessing. Taking this training earlier on the disease would have been a huge benefit to my Dad. Between his chronic illnesses and caring for Mom, he had too much on his plate. What Types of Things Will I Learn In This Training? Firstly, you'll learn about providing contented involvement.  In other words, successful caregiving comes down to helping the person be as comfortable & involved & happy as possible. Keeping in mind that a person living with a demanding disorder can still: zero in on a task or activitystay with it for some timehave a pleasant time doing it Keeping the person involved and content may help lessen confusion and reduce the chances of distress and difficult behaviors. Determining contented involvement takes practice. For instance, think of Goldilocks trying to find a balance between too much and too little. That is to say, a just right amount. As a result of taking the training program I learned new ways to approach caring for Mom as she declines further.  Learning that we, as caregivers, are more in charge than we thought was huge.  While we can't control the disease, we can control our reactions. For example. reacting in calm, more understanding ways helps our loved one stay calm. Anyone dealing with someone with Alzheimer's knows that being calm can be a challenge. Changing our behavior, reactions will change the outcomes of many of our interactions. That's the benefit of becoming a Savvy Caregiver. As a result, our journey as caregivers can be a lot easier. ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ RELATED EPISODES: What Is Death Positivity? The Power of Words & Creativity: A Balm for Both

The transformative power of creativity can be a balm for both individuals living with cognitive impairment and their caregivers. For caregivers, engaging in artistic endeavors provides a much-needed respite from the demands of caregiving, offering a chance to relax, recharge, and reconnect with their own creative spirit. This self-care is essential to prevent burnout and maintain overall well-being. For the person with cognitive impairment, creative expression offers a unique avenue for communication, stimulation, and joy. Activities such as painting, music, or dance can help to reduce anxiety, improve mood, and maintain a sense of purpose. These creative pursuits also provide opportunities for social interaction and shared experiences, fostering a deeper connection between the caregiver and the individual they support. By working collaboratively on creative projects, both parties can experience a sense of accomplishment and shared satisfaction. Our Guest: Mary Crescenzo Mary Crescenzo is one of five 2022 Individual Winners of the Maude's Awards for Innovation in Dementia Care. She is an arts strategist/practitioner, master teaching artist, and mult-hyphenate creative whose work as an author spans genre of nonfiction, fiction, essay, reviews, and poetry in both commercial and literary markets, and as blogger and broadcaster. In the realm of theatre, she is playwright of Planet A, director, and actor. Her play, Planet A, is about the good, bad and ugly terrain of Alzheimer's/dementia. In the world of music, Mary is a Jazz singer, lyricist and librettist and founder of MC3 - a Jazz trio. Dementia Caregiving Guide for Kids & Teens

When a family gets a diagnosis of a dementia causing disease, it's normal to want to shield kids and even teens from the news. However, with the right support, they can be an invaluable supportive caregiver to their loved one. Here are some tips on how to help them navigate that role. Open Communication: Talk Honestly: Explain dementia in an age-appropriate way. Address their fears and frustrations openly. Listen Actively: Validate their feelings. Let them know it's okay to feel sad, angry, or confused. Supportive Caregiving: Find Age-Appropriate Tasks: Let them help with simple tasks like setting reminders or engaging in familiar activities with their loved one. Focus on Strengths: Highlight their unique ability to connect with their loved one through shared interests or hobbies. Maintaining Balance: Set Boundaries: Acknowledge their need for social time and hobbies. Schedule respite care or involve other family members. Support Groups: Connect them with online or in-person groups for young caregivers. They'll find others facing similar situations. By involving them in care while respecting their needs, teens can be amazing caregivers while still chasing their dreams. Our Guest: Alex Schumacher Alex was a tween when his family learned his grandmother had Alzheimer's. As an adult, he is now the author of the graphic novel "The Effects of Pickled Herring".
