All Home Care Matters and our host, Lance A. Slatton were honored to celebrate the 10th Anniversary of AlzAuthors with the founding members and more.   About Marianne Sciucco:   Marianne Sciucco is a founder of AlzAuthors and the author of Blue Hydrangeas, an Alzheimer's love story. She's also co-producer and host of their podcast Untangling Alzheimer's and Dementia.   About Deb Bunt:   Deb took early retirement from her role in the youth offending service in London and moved to Suffolk seven years ago. As well as acquiring four grandchildren since she's been in Suffolk, she has also built an enduring friendship with Peter. This friendship Peter has given Deb a new lens through which to view her life.   Peter has enabled Deb to fulfil one of her life's ambitions – to be a published writer – and she now spends her time with Peter raising awareness of the condition or cycling insane distances around the county. Without question, Peter has enriched Deb's life.   About Tanya Ward Goodman:   Tanya Ward Goodman is the author of the award winning memoir, “Leaving Tinkertown.” Her essays and articles about travel, art, and the challenges and rewards of caregiving have appeared in numerous publications including The Washington Post, Orange County Register, Luxe, Premium Magazine, Atlas Obscura, and Variable West.   About Vicki Tapia:   Trained as an educator, Vicki Tapia has a proclivity for caring, spending over 30 years working as a Lactation Consultant teaching mothers and babies the art of breastfeeding.   When both her parents were diagnosed with dementia (Alzheimer's and Parkinson's-related) within a few months of each other, she took on the role of caregiver. As a coping mechanism, Vicki kept a journal detailing the many challenges her family faced along the way. Over time, her diary became a roadmap of sorts, morphing into the award-winning memoir Somebody Stole My Iron: A Family Memoir of Dementia.   About Dorothy Horne: Dorothy Horne is an author, speaker, and a former award-winning blogger for the Longview News-Journal. She was honored to be named a “Star Over Longview” in 2016. Dorothy is a member of AlzAuthors, “a global community of authors writing about Alzheimer's and dementia from personal experience to light the way for others." She has served on the board of the East Texas Alzheimer's Alliance and facilitated several Alzheimer's support groups. Dorothy is a retired first grade teacher. One of her greatest delights is being "Dot-Dot" to her four grandsons. She lives in East Texas and enjoys photography and traveling.   About Susan Landeis:   Susan is a member of the AlzAuthors management team and Board of Directors. She became a featured author on the AlzAuthors website in 2020, and team member later the same year. Her roles include Graphic Designer, Curator of Custom Caregiver Collections, and LinkedIn Manager.    Susan is the author of her memoir, In Search of Rainbows: A daughter's story of loss, hope, and redemption and she also penned Optimal Caregiving: A guide for managing senior health and well-being.   About Jean Lee:   Jean Lee wrote lesson plans for 22 years as an elementary school teacher. She had no aspirations to write a book, however when both parents were diagnosed on the same day with Alzheimer's, her journey as their caregiver poured out on paper through Alzheimer's Daughter. After the sadness of her parents decline, life brought her comfort and healing through the formation of AlzAuthors.com, cofounded with Marianne Sciucco and Vicki Tapia. What started as a one-month collaboration has now taken on a thriving life of its own for a decade.   About Carol Bradley Bursack:   Carol Bradley Bursack was a caregiver for an older neighbor and seven aging family members, all of whom are represented by first-person vignettes in Minding Our Elders: Caregivers Share Their Personal Stories. However, Carol wanted to do more than tell her own stories. She wanted to give other caregivers a chance to do the same.   About Christy Byrne Yates:   Christy is an expert in navigating the challenges and opportunities in life including living in the “Sandwich Generation” — that time period of raising children while also caring for an aging loved one. Her book, “Building a Legacy of Love: Thriving in the Sandwich Generation” recounts her journey and learning as a working mother of two who also managed the care of her parents, both of whom had some form of dementia. She incorporates meditation, mindfulness and other evidence based mind/body practices into her work to support growth, resilience, and a pathway to living life fully.

Interviews by Brainard Carey

Sasha Sykes (b.1976) is an Irish artist with a research-based practice in rural Ireland, at the foothills of the Wicklow mountains. Her artworks and furniture pieces are hand made using acrylics and resins to explore, manipulate, and challenge the material language of the natural world through the embedding of plants, flowers, algae and fungi she collects from the landscape. Her architectural background infuses her work with a sense of rigor, and informs her strong approach to form and composition, exploring notions of history and usefulness in a 21st century context. The artist has worked all over the world including London (1999-2003) and New York (2003-2006) and has now settled in her native County Carlow where she lives with her husband and three children and works in a strawbale studio next door. Known for her use of hand-cast resins, embedding found objects and collected organic materials, Sykes tells stories of our landscape and social history. Her work is found in numerous private and public collections such as the National Museum of Ireland, The Office of Public Works, The Department of Foreign Affairs and The Department of Culture & Heritage, as well as prestigious hotels and corporate headquarters: from Carton House to the Bank of America. The New York Times stated that Sykes' art is ‘for people who live in the city but dream of the country'. Noted honors include Gyre, which had critical success at the PAD fair in London, and being invited to exhibit in the ‘Best of Europe' at the Michelangelo Foundation for Creativity's 2018 ‘Homo Faber' show in Venice, and receiving an inaugural Fellowship from the foundation in 2023. This podcast is a replay of our recent panel discussion on LGBTQ+ caregiver concerns, hosted by Sue Evans of Kensington Senior Living and AlzAuthors. Authors Laura Davis, Christopher MacLellan, Vincent Zappacosta, and Douglass Christensen joined Sue, Christy and I as we delved into the complexities of caregiving within the LGBTQ+ community. They shared personal stories, insightful advice, and meaningful discussions about their caregiving journeys, offering knowledge and support to others currently caring for a loved one. Empathy emerged as a recurring theme during the discussion. The group explored how understanding and compassion are foundational to a positive caregiving experience, especially in the face of stigmas surrounding dementia and LGBTQ+ identities. The panelists underscored the critical importance of legal documents such as power of attorney and healthcare proxies. These tools grant caregivers the authority needed to make vital decisions during emergencies. The LGBTQ+ community, in particular, benefits from these preparations to navigate potential biases and ensure their loved ones' wishes are honored. They emphasized that preparing documents and passwords in advance can prevent needless complications, resonating with caregivers who might find themselves thrust into unexpected situations. The episode illuminated unique challenges faced by LGBTQ+ caregivers. Issues such as isolation and the need to select healthcare providers comfortable with their orientation were discussed candidly. Positive experiences in inclusive areas like California and New York City contrasted with occasional instances of discrimination, as shared by Vincent and Douglas when they faced resistance in having Douglass recognized as family. Legal tools and personal anecdotes underscored the power of preparedness in overcoming personal bigotry and ensuring smooth caregiving and end-of-life processes. The insights from this episode of the AlzAuthors podcast offer hope and guidance for caregivers, especially those navigating the additional layers of complexity tied to LGBTQ+ identities. All Home Care Matters and our host, Lance A. Slatton welcomed AlzAuthors to the show to learn about their new book "Poetry for the Dementia Journey - An AlzAuthors Anthology".   Marianne Sciucco - Co-Founder of AlzAuthors:   Marianne Sciucco is not a nurse who writes but a writer who happens to be a nurse, using her skills and experience to create stories that bear witness to the humanity in all of us. She writes contemporary, women's and young adult fiction. With more than 20-years' experience as a staff nurse and case manager, she's worked with countless families dealing with issues related to aging, elder care, Alzheimer's, and dementia. In 2002, she put the two together and began writing about the intricate lives of people struggling with health and family issues.   She published her debut novel, "Blue Hydrangeas, an Alzheimer's love story," in 2013 to glowing reviews. This book led her to become a co-founder and manager of AlzAuthors, the global community of authors writing about Alzheimer's and dementia from personal experience to light the way for others. Started by three women who had each written a book about dementia in 2015, there are now more than 350 author contributors. When not writing she works as a campus nurse at a community college in New York's Hudson Valley.   Ann Campanella - Manager and Director of AlzAuthors:   Ann Campanella is a former magazine and newspaper editor. She is the author of two award-winning memoirs and four collections of poetry. Her writing has appeared in newspapers, magazines, literary journals and online sites across the country and around the world. Her first memoir, Motherhood: Lost and Found, tells the story of her mother's descent into Alzheimer's at the same time Ann was trying to become a mother and dealing with a series of miscarriages.   This memoir was named “One of the best Alzheimer's books of all time,” by Book Authority two years in a row. Celiac Mom, Ann's second memoir, tells the story of her daughter's celiac diagnosis and her family's transition to a gluten-free lifestyle and has become a “go-to” resource for those with celiac.    Two of Ann's poetry books, What Flies Away and The Beach Poems, capture poignant moments of living with and loving someone with dementia. Ann is a manager and director of AlzAuthors, a nonprofit organization representing hundreds of books about Alzheimer's and dementia. In 2018, she was recognized by her hometown newspaper as one of the Most Influential Women in her community for her work promoting Alzheimer's awareness. Vicki Tapia is a founder of AlzAuthors and the author of Somebody Stole My Iron: A Family Memoir of Dementia. In this replay of a recent Aging and Amazing book club discussion, Vicki shares profound insights from her personal experiences. She discusses how caring for two parents with dementia placed a considerable strain on her personal support system. A long-distance caregiver, she found the challenges of managing her parent's concerning behaviors and medical needs from 200 miles away daunting. Their rural community and limited medical resources confounded the situation as well. Her only sibling's chosen absence from the situation was another stressor. Newly married, she was reticent to lean on her supportive physician husband too hard. Her adult children were also supportive but lived far away, making it difficult to ask them for help. A lifelong journaler, she resolved her feelings and worries by putting pen to paper, eventually coming to the realization that she had written a book. Initially, she hesitated to publish her book due to privacy concerns but was encouraged to do so by positive feedback. Her decision to publish was also influenced by her desire to help others navigate similar experiences. Somebody Stole My Iron was published in 2014 and was a finalist for the High Plains Book Awards in 2015. Each chapter ends with "Lesson Learned," imparting valuable insight and inspiration to caregivers. Three Key Takeaways 1. Finding Humor in Hardships: Vicki emphasizes the importance of finding humor in difficult situations, which can provide emotional relief and resilience. 2. The Necessity of Self-Care: Vicki's guilt over taking a trip is a common sentiment among caregivers. Her mother's philosophy, "life is for the living," underscores the need for self-care and balance, reminding caregivers to also focus on their own well-being. 3. Patience and Kindness: Through her experience, Vicki learned the crucial caregiving virtues of patience, respect, and kindness. Welcome to another insightful episode of Untangling Alzheimer's and Dementia, and a replay of our recent book club with Aging and Amazing. In this episode, we bring together a panel of poets who share a common thread—each has navigated the challenges of caring for a loved one with dementia. Your hosts, Marianne Sciucco and Ann Campanella, along with guest authors Daniel Potts, MD, Sue Fagalde Lick, Sherri Levine, and Margaret Stawowy delve into the world of poetry as a powerful outlet for expressing the complex emotions tied to Alzheimer's and dementia care. Listen as these courageous caregivers discuss how poetry provides solace and a sense of connection amidst the trials of caregiving. From Sherri Levine's poignant reflections on taking flowers to her mother in hospice, to Margaret Stawowy's candid portrayal of medicating her mother, and Dan Potts's therapeutic use of art and poetry to connect with his father, each story shines a light on the personal battles and moments of tenderness that define the caregiving experience. We also have laughter amid the hardships as Sue Lick shares a day in the life at a nursing home through her evocative poetry. Don't miss her heartwarming tale of memory care residents joyously indulging in ice cream. Tune in to find inspiration, empathy, and perhaps a new way to process your own experiences through the beauty of poetry. Three Key Takeaways 1. Therapeutic Expression: Poetry serves as a potent form of therapy, helping caregivers process complex emotions and find joy amidst adversity. 2. 2. Community and Support: Sharing stories and artistic expressions can cultivate a community of support, making the dementia journey less isolating. 3. Finding Humor: Embracing moments of joy and laughter is crucial, as highlighted by our lighthearted story, showing the importance of positivity in caregiving. All Home Care Matters was honored to welcome a truly remarkable person who is working to raise awareness about Alzheimer's and dementia and making a difference, Marianne Sciucco.   Marianne Sciucco is not a nurse who writes but a writer who happens to be a nurse, using her skills and experience to create stories that bear witness to the humanity in all of us. She writes contemporary, women's and young adult fiction.   A lover of words and books, she studied the craft of writing as an English major at the University of Massachusetts at Boston and worked for a time as a newspaper reporter in New England. She eventually became a registered nurse to avoid poverty.   With more than 20-years' experience as a staff nurse and case manager, she's worked with countless families dealing with issues related to aging, elder care, Alzheimer's, and nursing home placement. In 2002, she put the two together and began writing about the intricate lives of people struggling with health and family issues.   She published her debut novel, Blue Hydrangeas, an Alzheimer's love story, in 2013 to glowing reviews. This book led her to become a co-founder and director of AlzAuthors, the global community of authors writing about Alzheimer's and dementia from personal experience to light the way for others.

In our Season Three Premiere (wow!!), Episode 43,  Don and I talked with the force that is Marianne Sciucco -a registered nurse who's cared for hundreds of dementia patients over a 20-year career.  Her novel, Blue Hydrangeas, an Alzheimer's Love Story, is based on a couple she met through her work and is a testament to the power of love in the face of this heart wrenching disease. Marianne's tender work of fiction brings consolation and understanding to all who encounter Alzheimer's. Ironically, two years after her novel's publication, she started living her own story when her stepfather was diagnosed with mixed dementia: frontotemporal lobe, vascular, and Alzheimer's.  As his Health Care Proxy and Power of Attorney, she became his medical, legal, and financial representative. At the same time, she became the same to her mother, who was suffering from heart failure and dementia caregiver PTSD.  With her novel in place, it eventually morphed into her current project which is Alzauthors, a global community of over 300 writers who are writing about all dementia from their personal experience. #caregiversstories #alzauthors Caregivers Stories episode Kimberly D. Scott interviews Marianne Sciucco a registered nurse, author and co-founder of Alzauthors. As a child, Marianne dreamed of becoming a writer when she grew up. She studied English and creative writing and got a job as a journalist after she graduated. But then she realized that it was not working for her. So she then decided to take up nursing for she wanted a career where she will be able to help people. Her very first job was in a long-term care facility, then as her career bloomed, she became a case manager and it was during one of her shift at work in that job where she met the couple that becomes the characters on her first novel, “Blue Hydrangeas, an Alzheimer's Love Story”. With her novel in place, it eventually morphed into her current project which is Alzauthors, a global community of writers who are writing about all dementia from their personal experience. After Marianne’s novel was published, she found herself living her own story for her stepfather got diagnosed with dementia. She was the one responsible for him, for he signed her to be his health care proxy and power of attorney. With the trust that was given to her, she took care of his legal, medical and financial needs and at the same time dealt with her mother’s health problems and decline. With her juggling her career, family and becoming a caregiver, she shared that once the doctor confirms the dementia diagnosis, the next step that needs to be done is to visit the attorney's office and start the paperwork. The legal matter needs to be taken care of right away because once the person is deemed no longer competent then they can't sign any documents. Making it hard to process things on behalf of your loved one. Listen to the rest of the interview for Marianne highlighted the steps on what you need to do, how you can get the information that you need and the importance of knowing how to handle not just your loved one's needs but also your needs as a caregiver. There are so many pain points that Kimberly and Marianne discussed in this interview that you shouldn’t miss. Spare a little of your time for it's guaranteed that you will forever carry the lessons they'll impart. Jean Lee used her parents Alzheimer's journey to start AlzAuthors.   Jean Lees parents were both diagnosed with Alzheimer’s on the same day. She was the hometown daughter, working full time. Her sister lived 1,000 miles away. What could have been a recipe for disaster became AlzAuthors. Jeans sister suggested keeping a journal as part of caring for their parents . The result of this journal keeping was not to eventually write a book. Quite the contrary. The journal clearly described the health issues of their parents. But keeping the journal, written words describing "private health information" made Jean feel profoundly guilty. In her own words, "Like a traitorous spy, I kept the journal for two years. It became an integral part of our parents’ diagnosis." Additionally, reading guided Jean through her Alzheimer’s caregiving journey. Each book, each voice, equally strengthened her for difficult times ahead. Uniquely, no story was exactly the same. Jean makes your caregiving journey easier by telling her story and adding her voice to the choir, . How does someone go from documenting health issues to founding the largest collection of books on Alzheimer's?  As most things, it happened in stages. As a consequence of being told by an agent that her book was loved but that Jean had no name recognition, she decided to self publish. For example, Marianne Scuicco (a past guest) got started with Blue Hydrangeas through self publishing . Consequently, after her own publishing and receiving many positive reviews, Jean reached out to Marianne.  Jean felt she was reaching out to greatness and was shocked when she heard back. About AlzAuthors Connecting over a shared understanding of being Alzheimer's caregivers is how AlzAuthors was born. Equally important to their connection was finding more like-minded authors with the same goal. Together with a shared goal in mind they reached out to more authors. Making a difference in your dementia journey is the goal of AlzAuthors. Equally important the site is managed by six daughters who have experienced the loss of a loved one with dementia. Lifting the silence and stigma of Alzheimer's and other dementias is their goal. AlzAuthors write the words that serve as caregiver handbooks. In addition, they are guides through the disease process, or a catalyst for much needed conversation. A new author is featured each week and receive requests for inclusion from writers globally. Currently, they are 200 authors strong and growing. The AlzAuthors Blog Featuring a new author every week, the AlzAuthors blog is a fantastic resource to learning about other caregiver journeys. Together with authors and bloggers this site offers the widest range of advice in one place. Regardless of what you're looking for, you're sure to find it on AlzAuthors site. Looking for books focused on advice? The memoir and non fiction titles available are sure to provide the advice you seek. Furthermore, if you're looking for something different, there are many fiction titles available. Equally important are books for kids and teens. Young people have different questions about Alzheimer's and AlzAuthors has many books that address their concerns.
