On this episode of Remainders we watch the new horror classic The Substance. Fresh off Oscar attention and walking away with the award for Best Makeup of 2024, we celebrate this gonzo body horror movie that broke into the mainstream. Elizabeth Sparkle is an aging star played by the legendary Demi Moore. When she is fired from her fitness show for her age, she turns to the green stuff in an attempt to generate a younger version of herself. Results may vary, but Cronenberg would be proud.Other topics include a breakdown and vibe of the Oscars, Conan O'Brien being the best host possible, in memoriam of Gene Hackman and David Lynch, other body horror classics, and Sean Baker's career and his 2021 movie Red Rocket as a hidden gem.Songs of the WeekLooking For a Kiss by New York DollsI'm Waiting Here by David Lynch feat. On the final Sunday of Advent, Steve Dang concluded the Waiting Here for You series with a powerful reminder: while we wait on God, He is also waiting on us. In the wild and awesome nature of His love, God pursues us relentlessly. His love isn't transactional, it's rooted in relationship. And all are invited to the table.

We're all waiting for something. It's probably safe to say that we're all waiting for something all the time! And waiting can be hard. Not just for children, but for the rest of us, too. When it comes to unanswered prayers, we can sometimes grow weary of praying the same thing with seemingly no response. We can begin to doubt God's willingness to answer, or worse, we begin to doubt His loving goodness and kindness toward us. Today's scriptures encourage us not to lose heart. They offer hope and a new perspective! Listen in! Read Micah 7:7 and Galatians 4:4-5 Questions from this episode: Ttake some time to sit with Jesus in whatever it is that you are most waiting for. What is it that rises to the surface as you consider what you're waiting for today? Now ask him to help you to see the possibilities of what he is up to while you wait. As you practice your holy imagination, ask God to continue to strengthen you to persevere with hope in the waiting. On this week's episode of In the Waiting with Jev she discusses the things she has learned that people should not say to those who are dealing with loss. Of course, people are well meaning and aren't always aware of how sensitive or inappropriate the things they try to say are. So, hopefully this episode helps bring some clarity and healing! We're starting Season 3 with a bang. Peter McDade is here to talk about his novel ‘Songs by Honeybird', a story that features a fictional integrated rock band from 1960s Macon, Georgia, that fell off the musical map after a fire killed the lead singer and guitarist and also . . . possibly, the band's African American drummer. To put it more succinctly, ‘Songs by Honeybird' is about a band, a romantic break-up, a Ph.D candidate in History's research, secrets, fathers, racism, Atlanta, the sixties and the repercussions the South still feels from that period, and . . . a talking dog. In the last segment of the episode Alan Light joins me to talk about musician, civil rights activist, and my fellow native-North Carolinian Nina Simone. The reason I've roped Alan into popping in is because one of the two main characters in ‘Songs by Honeybird', the piano-playing Nina, is named after the legendary artist. Alan is a rock critic, journalist, former editor-in-chief of ‘Spin' and ‘Vibe' magazines, a former senior writer at ‘Rolling Stone', and author of the book ‘What Happened, Miss Simone?', a biography of Nina Simone inspired by the Academy Award-nominated Netflix documentary of the same title. You won't want to miss our convo. Subscribe to my YouTube channel, @ChristyHallberg, to catch the upcoming YouTube-only full interview with Alan Light about Nina Simone. Today, we are going to focus in on 1 Cor. 13:7 to understand what love always does. Paul says, "It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres." (1 Cor. 13:7). And from this "always" of love, here is the overarching truth that I want you to grasp…Love is Always ResponsibleJesus gave us the commandment to love. He said, “A new command I give you: Love one another." (John 13:34). This is not a suggestion. It's a commandment. It is a responsibility. In this message, Pastor David challenges us as spouses and family members. Listen as we explore how Scripture highlights that love is our responsibility. P.S. Which of the four challenges are you going to take on this week? IntroductionWhile our option to gather at Madison Elementary on Sundays has been stopped for the time being, our mission as a church remains the same: we are a community of disciples who are being formed into the image of Jesus for the sake of the world.Today we would like to lead you through a guided liturgy that will become our new normal for the next season of our church life together. In addition to being united in the gospel and relationships (which aren’t going away), another layer of connection can be found in our common practice and habits. By studying the same Bible passages, singing the same songs and repeating the same prayers, we are reminded of our connection that goes far beyond a common meeting space. Be creative and look for ways to incorporate children and adults of all ages who are in the room as readers and participants. We hope that as you walk through this, you will be encouraged by God to place your hope in Him and to continue to seize the chances to be and make disciples wherever you are.REALITY Kids MaterialsEach week, our regular Reality Kids curriculum which includes age specific videos, lessons and activities is posted on Realm for you and your children to use. You can find all the information and links on Realm - HEREOnce you are done with the lesson, enjoy the video and activity with Kailyn below.Gather TogetherWelcome to another Sunday filled with resurrection hope! Reality family, we have the chance today to worship the Triune God- Father, Son and Holy Spirit.Call to Worship“Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this is your true and proper worship. 2 Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.” (Romans 12:1-2, NIV)Sing Together“Come, let us sing to the Lord! Let us shout joyfully to the Rock of our salvation. Let us come to him with thanksgiving. Let us sing psalms of praise to him. For the Lord is a great God, a great King above all gods. He holds in his hands the depths of the earth and the mightiest mountains. The sea belongs to him, for he made it. His hands formed the dry land, too. Come, let us worship and bow down. Let us kneel before the Lord our maker, for he is our God. We are the people he watches over, the flock under his care.” (Psalm 95:1-8, NLT)Singing together is a gift that allows us to both rehearse what is true and to express the cry of our soul in a unique way. Feel free to either sing along with the following video or have someone in the room lead you on an instrument or a cappella. “Waiting Here for You”“The Passion”“Build My Life”PRAY TOGETHER“Have mercy on me, O God, according to your steadfast love;according to your abundant mercy blot out my transgressions.Wash me thoroughly from my iniquity, and cleanse me from my sin!” (Psalm 51:1, ESV)Corporate Confession & AssurancePaul tells us in Ephesians that we were dead in our transgressions and sins…But today is a celebration because when there was nothing that we could do to resuscitate ourselves… God made us alive with Christ! Today we admit our need for Him and celebrate the brand new life he brings!Corporate Prayer of Confession:All: Lord God, your love for humankind, present in the beginning of all things, extends throughout history and touches even my life.Your love sees failings and forgives.Your love feels pain and wipes away our tears.Your love knows grief, and comforts the sorrowful.Your love sees sin and still loves the sinner.Forgive us when we fail to live lives that reflect your love.Forgive us the many times when we take for granted all that you have done for us.Transform us, through your Spirit, and empower us to serve you this day and all days.Amen.Assurance of Pardon:Hear and declare the Good News from Psalm 103:8-12: “The LORD is compassionate and gracious, slow to anger, abounding in love. He will not always accuse, nor will he harbor his anger forever; he does not treat us as our sins deserve or repay us according to our iniquities. For as high as the heavens are above the earth, so great is his love for those who fear him; as far as the east is from the west, so far has he removed our transgressions from us.” LEARN TOGETHER Discussion Q’sHow do the stories of others invite you to a greater measure of consistent, tenacious unity? What steps can you take this week to stand together in one heart and one mind with others?Where do you need to be given courage to strive and contend for unity with others? How does the gospel and the Christ hymn speak to those places of need?CELEBRATE & REMEMBER TOGETHERIf you have the means to celebrate communion together, please do so - remembering the broken body and shed blood of Jesus for you.“For Christ also suffered once for sins, the righteous for the unrighteous, to bring you to God. He was put to death in the body but made alive in the Spirit.” (1 Peter 3:18, NIV)ADVENTURE TOGETHERIn this next section, begin to dream together: what does it look like for you to be the church this week where God has placed you? What does that look like on your block, your street, at your work, in your family and with your friendships? We would love to hear your ideas and suggestions on how you can be the Body of Christ in this new and unprecedented time. Feel free to share your ideas by emailing the staff or by posting on Realm.Benediction - Prayer of Sending“The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ and the love of God and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you all.” (2 Corinthians 13:14) GivingOur giving at Reality is primarily an act of worship- a response to the generosity of Jesus towards us. online giving Prayer Requests/NeedsIf you would like someone to pray for you or you need help with a need, please contact:admin@realityolympia.comIf you are new to the Reality community and want more information to get connected: Get connected
