When Ann was 19 years old, she woke up one morning to find her mother dead facedown on the bathroom floor. Twenty years later, the tears from that trauma were just under the surface waiting to explode. She sought help and through one 15 minute session with a strange technique, she was able to remove the charge from that event and tell the story with no emotion. That one session set Ann on a journey to not only release the trauma from past memories, but to get beyond that, into the subconscious mind to release tension stored deep in my body, simply using the power of awareness.Ann says, “Much of the time, society tells us, and therefore we tell ourselves, that we shouldn't be feeling what we are feeling. I have found that seeking out our truth, what we truly feel, and accepting those feelings, is the key to inner peace.” Ann is the author of A Pathway to Insight and a hopes to give a powerful TedTalk someday. Ann, Fran, & Mary Ann (53rd State Press, 2020) is a new play by Erin Courtney, one of the most exciting contemporary American playwrights. This is a play that engages with themes of science, religion, and trauma through a highly theatrical and character-driven storytelling style. Ann and Mary Ann were both witnesses of traumatic events in their childhoods and were drawn to neuroscience as a way to understand and perhaps heal from their trauma. When Mary Ann begins experimenting with inducing spiritual experience, Ann's skepticism regarding the supernatural drives a wedge between them. When Ann's patient Fran begins experiencing Capgras syndrome, which convinces her that her loved ones are imposters, Mary Ann's desire to heal Fran conflicts with Ann's desire to study her. The interactions of these three characters open questions of medical ethics, the meaning of faith, and the possibility of healing. Andy Boyd is a playwright based in Brooklyn, New York. He is a graduate of the playwriting MFA at Columbia University, Harvard University, and the Arizona School for the Arts. Learn more about your ad choices. Tiffany Morgan is a well educated IFS therapist who has completed IFS levels one and two. She is well spoken and well known on social media. And, Tiffany Morgan has an extensive eating disorder treatment history which she shares on today's show. Tiffany walks through her experiences and gives listeners a glimpse into her internal system. She is open and vulnerable. I feel honored she shares her story with us all. One of the main points which stands out to me is the radical difference in IFS treatment and healing. In IFS, we look at troublesome, damaging, inappropriate, toxic behaviors and faulty, irrational, unhealthy, distorted thoughts as parts. Parts who have a very good reason for doing what they do. Parts who have an important function. Parts who may believe they are keeping you alive and away from harm. Parts who want to be heard, validated, cared for, and valued- like Tiffany says of her anorexic part she calls 'Ann'. Ann, who was seen by everyone as the bad guy, is Tiffany's fiercest protector. The other point that stands out is the power of Self witnessing our younger part's stories. This can be done in a safe, non-flooding and overwhelming way. There is an importance of the impact of having the story witnessed. Ann was protecting Annie who is young and afraid. When Ann felt compassion by Tiffany's Self she allowed Tiffany to meet who she was protecting all along. Then, Annie was able to tell her story to Tiffany and unburden her pain. The witnessing of younger parts stories by Self is a powerful experience. Above all else, Tiffany Morgan is compassionate. She is compassionate towards all of her parts and all of the parts of others. I had this experience with her when we met face to face last year at the annual IFS conference. Her compassion is her shining quality that you will hear and experience on today's episode. To check out all she is up to go to https://tiffanycobbmorgan.com/ and follow her on Instagram and Facebook.

Hello from Brionna! Thank you for inviting me into your 2018. Today’s episode is a collaboration with Hiwote Getaneh, host and producer of "Depth & Candor" podcast. I discovered “Depth & Candor” via @podcastsincolor in 2017 and, after orbiting one another for months, we met at an event she was facilitating (ht @Vinterlude!) "Depth & Candor” is a pod “designed to help you live a fulfilling, impactful and vibrant life." In this episode, we break down the books that we resonated with and were challenged by in 2017, and why they deserve a spot on your reading list this year. 8:00 - Our Top Reads For Your 2018 Hiwote: “Homegoing” by Yaa Yahzi. “It makes you think of race and power in current political climate, but this made you think of it in a different way.” Brionna: “Cravings" by Chrissy Teigen is easily the most approachable cookbook I’ve ever read. I come form a dieting household--Melba toast crackers and Lean Cuisine was de rigueur. (Re)-learning flavors with Chrissy was the highlight of my 2017, and this book will be at my fingertips for the foreseeable future. 15:15 - Our #1 Career Books For Your 2018 Hiwote: “Linchpin” by Seth Godin. “He focuses on how to add value to the world in a way that’s not corny, and despite your fears. “Linchpin” is about how to stand out in your career, become an expert, and how to share your work with the world. Doing that, despite whatever fear you have.” Brionna: “The Big Life,” by Ann Shoket. “Ann's work really shaped how we as millennial women came into ourselves. When Ann was Editor-in-Chief of Seventeen, she guided the magazine and audience through that time. She noticed as more women became career and entrepreneurship focused. She helped lead the brand. “The Big Life” helped me unpack what matters to me, so I’m not busy spinning my wheels worrying about a life I don’t even want.” 17:30 - Our #1 Fiction Books For Your 2018 Hiwote: “The Thing Around Your Neck,” by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie. “Everyone knows “Americanah, “but this is an anthology. She tells people’s stories in both Nigeria and in the US. I made my mom read it, my aunts read it.” Brionna: “The Engagement Game,” by Joi-Marie McKenzie. “Her journey to get “that answer” unlocks a lot of questions she’s never asked of herself. The character shifts mindsets to get where she wants to be.” 25:40 - The Books We’d Recommend To Our Younger Selves Hiwote: “Designing Your Life,” by Bill Burnett and Dave Evans. “Their point is, your life can be successful in a million ways. Your only job is to choose the direction you want to go in, and go in that direction with no stress about the things you’re leaving behind. It’s a game changer, and I highly recommend it to anyone thinking of switching careers or figuring out what direction to go in in life.” Brionna: “Drop the Ball,” by Tiffany Dufu. “What makes her so relatable to me is that she grew up thinking it was her job as the woman in the house to take care of everyone. The book is about her letting go of that need, how she had to learn to drop the ball. By dropping the ball, she created space for others to pick it up. Ann Lowengart: Interiors Started on a Dare Today in The Lounge Nick joins Ann Lowengart of Ann Lowengart Design to talk about how her interior design business started on a dare. Ann and Nick discuss the importance of having a great staff on your side and how it helps propels your business. Getting to Know Ann A career can really feed your soul. For Ann, it does just that. She loves client interactions, design, business, and operations. She says that understanding that a love for her career can be more than just a paycheck, is the biggest lesson she learned from her parents growing up. Her favorite vacation she took was when she brought her daughter, an equestrian, to ride in Ireland. When Ann is asked, "Beer, wine or cocktail?" she prefers an iced tea and a run. Before she started her career in interior design, Ann was in corporate sales and attended UC Berkeley. She received the classic sales job after college and worked for Procter and Gamble. She says it was a really great experience for her because she rose up the ranks from stocking shelves to managing a small group of people. It was a great way to learn the basics of business and how to sell effectively, manage a team, listen carefully to her customers, behave in the most ethical and honest way and win at what you are doing. I Dare You! After five years, Ann took a severance package from P&G, which she and her used husband to buy a building. Ann remodeled the units in the building and then sold them. It was in the first unit that she discovered her love for wood floors and molding. She also found that she had an eye for spatial relationships and detail. Ann's friend noticed that she LOVED what she did with the remodel and dared her to put "Remodel Consultant" on her business card. Ann did and the next day at her open house she handed them out and received her first call. She booked her second project from a neighbor who also picked up one of her business cards and now, almost twenty years later, she has finished her fourth project for that family. The Business Today Ann has a team that consists of nine to fifteen people. At any given moment they might also have nine to twelve luxury residential projects going on at a time. Decorating a home from the ground up can take one to two years to complete, but allows Ann to get to know her clients really well. She prides herself on customer service. Projects at Ann's company can vary greatly in price. A lot of customers are under the impression that remodels work like they do on HGTV. Some kind of magic wand is waved around and poof! The project is done. Unfortunately, that's not how it works in real life. Ann had the opportunity to be interviewed by HGTV and one of the first things he did was apologize for the expectations HGTV sets... rarely anything can be finished super quickly for a reasonable price. For this reason, Ann's company gives a lengthy questionnaire process to be sure a client fits within her company. They have walked away from clients if they can't meet their budget and timeframe scenarios because they'd rather not do a disservice to the client or the company. If they do accept a brand new client, they first listen carefully to the client's design expectations and look at any Pinterest boards, design boards, or tear sheets they may have in order to stick as closely to what the client wants as possible. After the customer is taken on a shopping trip to see which levels of quality exist within their budget. A specific budget is developed to include everything from furniture, draperies, area rugs, accessories, art, and any extra costs associated with projects so the client knows where their money is going. They do not move forward unless the client is on the same page as them. Ann and Coupar PR Coupar PR is very strategic as well as ethical and honest. Krista's staff is also excellent in getting Ann's name out there such as in magazines. When Ann first joined Houzz in 2010,
Another week without Simon, but we’ve been promised that he will definitely be here next week. However, going by his Twitter as at Wednesday, this promise might not be kept. At least Ste will be here, even though Simon thinks Ste won’t be. As one of Simon’s roles is to book the SSGs, we had to resort to sending a signal out. Luckily Lukas Roper answered and became an SSSG (Skype Super-Special Guest). When Ann found out what Lukas had previously worked on you could hear her gasp in admiration and you can too. Lukas is currently working on the excellently named Corrupt Cup Contest, which is a tongue in cheek online multiplayer game based on the ongoing FIFA scandal. It sounds like it’ll be great fun, although if Team OLL decide to play each other it’ll be a little boring as we all play by the rules and won’t stab each other in the back. Maybe. Ann tells us a very interesting fact about the oceans and gives us some useful lessons in hacking while Ste made a quite good joke about Whitstable and is worrying about his new talk. We also had a feature from Sega Badawi, who is finding it difficult to have news stories that aren’t about the UK election. Cheerio! Writing Class Radio goes live to the stage. This episode is part live show, part interview with star of our show, the award-winning, solo-performer, Ann Randolph. Allison Langer is our host. This episode is about the importance of telling stories--not fairy tales, but the real scary, true stories we like to hide. Allison got into writing after the death of her young daughter. Writing about the situation helped her deal with the pain and get back to the job of mothering her other children. Telling that story also helped her let go of the label she cast on herself as that woman who lost a child. Listen to how she learned to get personal with her writing. Andrea tells the story of being rejected by a man when she was 8 months pregnant after being inseminated with donor sperm. When a man offers to give Andrea a massage, she gets excited by the possibility of finally getting laid, even though she's a lesbian. Andrea describes the massage in very intimate detail. She also shares her shame from the ultimate rejection and how that shame disappeared when she told her story in her very first writing class. Ann Randolph was a student in that class. Andrea feels forever indebted to Ann for laughing at her pain. Ann tells the story of how she worked her way up to performing off-Broadway and then lost it all. Ann persists in telling her stories even after being called inappropriate or failing miserably and ending up broke. When Ann goes off mic, Allison asks Ann why she comes out on stage in costume as Shanti Lightgiver and then disrobes. Ann tells us what she goes through each time she walks into a new theater. She talks about the time she bombed and how she recovers from failure. She details her experience with producers Mel Brooks and Anne Bancroft and how her dream of being a successful performer almost came true. Ann then takes the audience through a writing exercise, where several of them step to the mic and tell their own stories. Writing Class Radio is a podcast where you'll hear true personal stories and learn a little about how to write your own stories. Writing Class Radio is equal parts heart and art. By heart we mean the truth in a story. By art we mean the craft of writing. No matter what's going on in our lives, writing class is where we tell the truth. It's where we work out our shit, and figure out who we are. There's no place in the world like writing class and we want to bring you in.Writing Class Radio is co-hosted by Allison Langer (www.allisonlanger.com) and Andrea Askowitz (www.andreaaskowitz.com). This week, Debi Hertert of hostingyourhome.com coaches Ann Sigler, a Portland area Uber driver and imminent Airbnb host. Ann has lived in her house for 36 years, just retired from Intel, and wants to try her hand at hosting. Debi is helping her get started. Ann would like to begin hosting in September, 2016. You may wonder where Debi finds people to interview, and there isn’t any one, single way. Debi met Ann when Debi requested an Uber driver for a ride home from the Portland Airbnb office where she was having a meeting, and Ann picked her up. They got talking, and it eventually evolved into this interview. Ann does not yet have a listing for you to check out, so here are a couple of pics of her house: As Ann walked Deb through the house, Deb talked to her about furnishing options, and about parents traveling with kids who don’t necessarily need a large bed. Ann told Debi about water damage to the bathroom. The damage includes some mold and the insurance will cover part of her situation but not all. The 2nd Bedroom was nice – queen bed, blinds, and Deb talked to Ann about people wanting a place to put their suitcase and options. Closet is cleaned out. Deb talked to her about needing bedside tables and lamps, and extension cords for charging devices etc. This is a recommendation Debi always makes, is to have extension cords with at least three outlets on each side of every bed, and where possible, at the ends of couches. There are so many devices to plug in now and people don’t want to have to travel with their own extension cords. Ann’s own bedroom – Deb talked with Ann about locks for not only her room but for the guests’ rooms. They walked outside, and Debi loved the flowers and pergola. They sat at the table, and Deb then summarized the accommodation options as being 2 to 4, plus Ann. Deb suggested she just start with one bedroom and see how it goes. She asked Ann about the timeline, with the bathroom needing repairs. Ann is hoping for September. Ann also needs time to get her application completed for Washington County to operate a short-term rental and the two of them discussed occupancy taxes and how those are different depending on jurisdiction. Debi has been contacted by people who operate Airbnb’s but are not aware of what occupancy taxes even are. It’s true that there are some jurisdictions that simply have not dealt with short term rentals and occupancy taxes, in which case it definitely saves the owner a lot of money. But hosts should perform due diligence and find out what the rules are in your area. Ann confirmed that she had just retired from Intel, a major employer in the area, with several campuses. Ann’s location is good for guests who have reason to go to Intel and there are good bus and train connections from her house. Ann brought up that she was an Uber driver and could drive guests. Deb asked her about possibility of using an Intel bulletin board since she is a past employee. Deb brought up the Airbnb “Business Ready” category of Airbnb listing, in which the host has to meet certain requirements, including no pets. Ann has a cat so that nixes the category for her, but Deb still thinks she could attract business people for Intel and gave her a workaround suggesting “Near Intel/Nike” in the title of her listing. Ann told Debi about her new job as Ex Dir of Beaverton Downtown Association, part of the Main Street national organization. This job has stipend support from Intel, which supports the connection of retirees and local non-profits. Deb went back to the discussion of insurance for Ann’s house. When Ann called her insurance company to confirm the policy would cover short term rentals, they said no. Even though Airbnb has their important insurance policy coverage for hosts, everyone needs their own insurance policy and many will not cover short term rentals. They also talked about hosting both men and women guests and whether Ann felt comfortable hosting both. The kitchen will be shared with guests. The episode wraps up with Ann talking about her driving experiences with Uber and how she likes to ask people she “Ubers” about their Airbnb experiences, as hosts or guests or both.
