Trailer

He also dives into Something Very Bad Is Going To Happen, a creepy, psychological Netflix limited series set around a wedding that slowly spirals into something much darker and bloodier than it first appears. There is also chat about Pretty Lethal, a stylish thriller involving elite ballerinas, criminals, Uma Thurman, and a whole lot of trouble, even if the film does not quite land every part of its story as well as it might have hoped. On Dave's side, he reviews Bait, the smart new Prime Video comedy from Riz Ahmed, built around a struggling actor who becomes the centre of a media circus after auditioning for James Bond. Dame Lynley Dodd is a staple of Kiwi childhoods. The beloved children's author is best known for her Hairy Maclary series, the first of which was released over 40 years ago. She's sold millions of books worldwide, and just this week she was honoured at the New Zealander of the Year Awards. Dodd was granted the Legacy Award for fostering a love of literature in generations of children. While she admits it sounds a bit silly, Dodd admits to feeling slightly guilty at the level of acclaim and the legacy she's built. “Well I obviously, I think, been spending all these years thoroughly enjoying myself producing these books,” she told Jack Tame. “It sounds a bit, you know, I've been indulging myself, and I have, doing these things, but no, it's been great fun.” Dodd's love of wordplay and language stems back to her childhood, as her parents were, in her words, much into words, and there was an “awful lot of fun” with language in her home. “Both my parents were fond of books, and also fond of fun, and so, you know, obviously there were serious times as well, but there was a lot of fun with words,” she explained. “My father and I used to make up games, make up sort of imaginary animals and all sorts of silly things and have nonsense conversations about them.” The language used in her home was also a contrast to the things she was given to read at school, which were “incredibly old-fashioned". “There were, you know, millions of gnomes and fairies and bits and pieces, and it was talking down kind of language,” Dodd told Tame. “And I got a bit bored by those books, and it was only much later on, when I met books like Dr Suess', I suddenly realised you could be mad with language and have a fantastic time.” LISTEN ABOVE See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

TVC 694.1: Ed welcomes back Tom Lisanti, renowned historian of sixties cinema, and the author of such books as Carol Lynley: Her Film & TV Career in Thrillers, Fantasy and Suspense and Ryan's Hope: An Oral History of Daytime's Groundbreaking Soap. Tom's recent books include Dueling Harlows: The Race to Bring the Actress's Life to the Silver Screen, everything you wanted to know about the two major motion pictures released in 1965 about screen legend Jean Harlow—both of which happened to be named Harlow—and the highly publicized efforts by rival producers Bill Sargent and Joseph Levine to out-do each other. Sargent's Harlow, a quickly made independent movie starring Carol Lynley, was filmed in black and white, using Sargent's patented technology Electronovision. Levine's Harlow, a big budget biopic starring Carroll Baker, was filmed in color for Paramount Pictures. Both Harlows were originally released within a few weeks of each other in 1965; both are available now on home entertainment. Dueling Harlows is available from McFarlandPub.com. Topics this segment include why the Lynley/Sargent Harlow is much better than what the original reviews would suggest; how Lynley originally signed on because Judy Garland was attached to the project, only to remain stuck on it once Garland quit; and why the real-life story of Harlow herself generated such interest in movie makers.
