The Darius Foroux Show: Master Your Productivity. Master Your Life.
For the longest time, I had this dream of living in Spain. Who doesn't want to live somewhere warm and close to the beach?! Well, me. In this episode, I share why and what I learned. I gave it a try in 2022 and spent six months living in Spain. I learned a lot. And I even met my girlfriend there. But I realized that living somewhere warm was just a dream. I got used to the weather. And it made me realize that I was complaining too much about the weather in The Netherlands. Since I got back, I've been enjoying my hometown a lot more. This is literally the oldest cliche in the book, but home is truly where the heart is. As you go about your day, don't forget to appreciate your town, no matter where you're from. In this episode, Clare is joined by Lilian Roeland who has been living in Spain, for decades. She was raised in The Netherlands and has also lived in South Africa and plans to live in Canada. She went on holiday to Spain, fell in love with the country and made it her home. Lilian talks about understanding cultural differences and how not taking them into account enough impacts your life. She also explains how she managed being separated from friends and family and what she did when her father fell sick. Lilian also shares her experience of living in South Africa working to make the life of young people easier. KEY TAKEAWAYS Taking opportunities is the best way to learn, expand your horizons and live a full life. Having a safe home to go back to or a backup plan is essential. It enables you to be brave and try things. There are many cultural differences in Spain despite them being in Europe. Never ignore cultural differences. Try to accept and adapt to them. Life in Spain is different but good. Longer days and a relaxed social environment are just two examples. In Spain, knowing the right people helps to speed bureaucracy up. Racism is still an issue in Spain, mainly with the older generation. When trying to help people in other countries ask them what they need, don´t assume you know. The European way of doing things is not a good fit everywhere. When returning to your own country after spending many years abroad you will experience a culture shock. You and your home country have changed. So, you will need to adapt. BEST MOMENTS ‘I went out in the world free to see what would happen. ´ ‘Administration is a lot slower.' ‘Don´t just assume that you will know better, there are always different options.' ABOUT THE HOST – CLARE KAY Clare has moved countries many times throughout her life, from China to Taiwan, Nigeria, Zambia, and the USA. She has also travelled the world for various businesses and now wishes to impart her advice to others to save them time, money, and energy. Clare follows three principles central to her endeavours. First, she looks outward internationally, working with people overseas or of different nationalities. Second, she is obsessed with communication, having learned French, German and Mandarin Chinese. She also teaches English and works as an editor for others' work. Clare is passionate about making a difference through her coaching in the world of personal development. CONTACT METHOD www.kayproofreading.com www.linkedin.com/in/clarekay https://www.facebook.com/KayProofreading Podcast Description When you move for a new job, to live with someone after a long-distance relationship or to explore the benefits of a new lifestyle, moving countries occurs as an opportunity, but it still might be a bumpy ride. Moving Countries 101 presents a paradox of moving to a new destination, but it being all about the journey: the ongoing experience of having moved countries. Clare and her guests share the human stories of an ancient undertaking in modern times. Moving countries prompts change, and change provokes being unsettled emotionally, physically, mentally, and spiritually. On all these fronts, moving countries promotes observation, opportunity, and discovery.
In this episode, Clare is joined by Fiona, a financial advisor and writer who moved to Spain just a few months before the first Covid lockdown. She explains why they chose Spain and lived in Airbnbs for the first six months. Fiona also shares how they ensured that their 14-year-old daughter could successfully finish her education and the steps they took to maintain a close bond with their 18-year-old son who was at university, in the UK. The episode also covers, what it was like to commute between two countries, finding a job in Spain before becoming self-employed. Settling into a new country and how it transforms who you are and inspires you to fulfil some of your dreams. KEY TAKEAWAYS Living in a place for 5 or 6 weeks is usually enough for you to know whether an area is right for you or not. In Spain, it is possible for children to continue to study using the UK school curriculum and do so in English. Fiona explains how. Spanish schools, including the International ones are culturally very different, which means kids of all ages usually need a lot of extra support. Pools cost a lot to maintain, but even in a hot place you can only use them for a few months of the year. Learning the language is harder than you think and in certain circumstances it is usually best to seek out someone who speaks your first language. When looking at financial matters like pensions use a professional who understands both the situation in your home country as well as in your new country. Proximity to your home country is an important consideration. BEST MOMENTS ‘Never just go on one of these viewing tours where you just go look at houses and buy the first house within five days. ´ ‘We sacrificed the pool so that we could be closer to the sea.' ‘We have different tax regimes in different provinces within Spain.' She is obsessed with communication: learning French, German, and Mandarin Chinese, teaching English and editing other people's work. She is passionate about making a difference to people through coaching, listening, and mentoring in the world of personal development. Americans have a ton of mental anguish around their bodies and eating while Spanish women, on the other hand, barely think about it. They enjoy good food and maintain la bella figura effortlessly. In 2003 I moved to Spain with the intention of learning how Spaniards enjoyed food and yet stayed slim. My roommate, Carmen, 20 years my senior, was the perfect guide. She taught me how to cook and answered all of my questions. In today's episode I share the 11 things I learn about eating and staying slim while living in Spain.

It wasn't a tough decision for me to move back to Spain. Moving to a country like Spain has a lot of advantages and a few disadvantages. It depends on what you're looking for and here are the things which were and are important to me. drmo@digitalnomadphysician.com
I am visiting Braga, Portugal today. It's a little under 3 hours on a bus from Santiago de Compostela, Spain. It was a great trip and nice to see Portugal. No passport or visa is needed since I am already residing in Europe. We just hopped on the bus and got to Brage. I have also been in the process of renewing my non-lucrative visa. This will be my 2nd renewal. If I get approved I'll get a visa for another 2 years. For this I decided to use a lawyer. I am working with Monica Calvete who is a brilliant immigration attorney out of Barcelona and very professional.

In this episode of the Live and Invest Overseas Podcast, Kathleen and Lief debunk the myth that living in Europe is expensive. They share the best seven places to live or retire in the Old World. Below is the breakdown. 3:46 Portugal. Portugal has it all, good weather, beautiful beaches, and great health care. Another benefit is that English is widely spoken in places such as The Algarve and Lisbon. 6:25 France. Tourist places like Paris will have a premium cost. However, the north and south of France can be very affordable, not to mention that France has the best health care system in the world. 9:45 Italy. Like any other place, Italy can be very cheap or very expensive. The southern part of Italy is very attractive and affordable for expats. 12:17 Spain. In Spain, life is a “fiesta”. Here you can enjoy nice weather and a slower and different lifestyle. 14:16 Malta. This is an affordable English-speaking country where any expat can obtain a residency very easily. 15:56 Greece. Greece offers a low-cost island living. You can also obtain residency with their Golden Visa program. 16:40 Cyprus. You might not have thought of this place, but Cyprus is a great alternative. English is widely spoken and you can get citizenship by investment.
British migration to the Spanish coastline is only part of the story about British emigration to Spain.
