587: Developing the Youth with Erica Austin

In today's episode of the As Told by Nomads Podcast, join Erica Austin and me as we talk about youth empowerment, education, and the ECRA educational program that gears youths to effectively transition to adulthood and entrepreneurship. Erica believes the education system in the U.S. is fragmented. This results in so many communities, despite having prestigious agencies, still fall short in providing quality education that's accessible to the majority. For her, it takes a village of stakeholders to guide the youth in recognizing and reaching their potential. Tune into this discussion on how we can tailor solutions for the development of youth's education in this episode! What does it mean to believe in the youth? When Erica was young, she took inspiration from the protagonist of the movie, Harriet the Spy. This inspiration wasn't the typical type, the type that would just eventually fade off. Because of Harriet, writing interest her. Erica took this spark and decided to tell her parents that she wanted to write a book. Fortunately, because her parents were supportive, Erica was given the tools she needed to begin. Because she grew up with a spiritual foundation, she decided to write a book sharing her faith with other children. Erica's first book was entitled, What Every Child Should Know About Prayer: From a Child's Point of View. With the help of her parents, Erica became an author at the very young age of nine. From there, she became a child prodigy in her hometown for being one of the very few child authors in the 90s. As her book gained more attention and recognition, Erica was in different speaking engagements and book signings. Because of her book, she fell into public speaking at a young age and became passionate about youth empowerment, a spark that continues to blaze up until now.Outline of the episode:[03:03] What did inspire Erica to publish her first book at the age of nine?[06:14] Erica Austin – on the implications of being a child author in the 90s[08:15] Youth empowerment and the relevance of education[11:29] How did the ECRA perform during the pandemic?[13:50] We can leverage what we already have access to…[17:01] Help them transform during their formative years![18:55] What can you expect from the ECRA Youth Entrepreneurship Academy 4-Week Educational Program?[20:34] This is a movement![21:28] The ECRA Educational Program Pilot[22:52] Erica Austin – on the importance of tailoring solutions to the perspective of those who it servesResources:Website: https://ericaaustin.com/ECRA: https://ecragroup.com/Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/EricaforYouthTwitter: https://twitter.com/ericaforyouthInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/mseaustin/LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/erica-austin-230a7967/Connect with Tayo Rockson and the As Told By Nomads Podcast on:Personal Website: https://tayorockson.comUYD Management: https://uydmanagement.com/UYD Collective:

Facing Major Trauma and PTSD After My Son’s Death

Tendrils of Grief

Play Episode Listen Later Aug 3, 2020 34:16

After her son passed away from cancer, Erica went on an 8-year journey where she felt and acted insane. It was eventually discovered that Erica had PTSD and it’s taken her only up until last year to finally feel somewhat normal again and to recognize her triggers. She shares both the emotional and physical toll the loss of her son took on her and what has helped bring her back to a bit of normalcy as she continues on.    Key Takeaways: Erica lost her son to cancer.  Erica went to therapy and spent her time trying to convince her therapist that she was crazy. She felt insane.  Everything in Erica’s life just kept surfacing, the grief she had experienced even when she was two years old, and she couldn’t turn it off.  Not only did Erica suffer the emotional effects, but she had an intense physical response to grief as well. Erica was diagnosed with PTSD and she would randomly pass out when she got too stressed out.  The next phase Erica went through was fear. She had fear everywhere she turned.  Erica shares tactics and strategies she used to keep her grounded.  Erica felt like this for 8 years and it was only until the last year and a half did she feel like a normal person again.  It’s taken time for Erica to feel healthy again.  Your body reacts to what you’re thinking.  When Erica went back to work for the first time, it was really hard.  Erica got stuck in her grief when she saw her son decline.  It feels like a full-time job to keep herself somewhat ‘normal’.  Erica was working before the pandemic. Now she’s unemployed. She’s not sure what’s next for her.  Susan and Erica talk about their relationship with God after the passing of their loved one.  When it comes to grief, get a therapist! You’re not crazy if you have someone to help you through this journey.  If you have bad or evil thoughts, it doesn’t mean you’re suicidal. You’ve gone through something very dramatic in your life. Practice forgiveness.  If you think you’re losing your mind or going insane, this is very normal in your grief journey.    Resources: Man's Search for Meaning by Viktor Frankl

She had carded the white Coopworth/Shropshire (Coopshire? Shropworth?) after carding the black llama and then used the usual cleaning brush on the drum before trying this brush cleaner. It was obvious, because the fiber she got on the brush cleaner is gray, that there was still some llama left on the drum.       It did a number on the brush cleaner, but she thinks it will work better with fewer teeth anyway. She thinks the teeth are just prone to turning on this particular one.       Finished objects:   Michelle finished carding the Coopworth/Shropshire fleece. It became very floofy.           British Breeds Study Spun Yarns These were not spun recently, however, Erica came across the breed study yarns she has finished spinning. In the photo below you can see from left to right Jacob, BFL, Suffolk, Shetland. The Weavolution sponsored Breed study includes the following breeds:   Suffolk Jacob Romney Marsh Shetland (moorit, humbug) Black Welsh BFL (oatmeal,  Masham Erica still has a few sample packs left she can send to listeners, if you are interested e-mail her.   Erica also completely finished her Community Cloth Sett Samples, by mounting them on card stock with their records. You can see various details about each sample on Weavolution. Merino Sample,  Merino Sample 2, Merino Sample 3, and Shetland Sample 2. See WIP's for Sheltand Sample 3.           Works in progress:   Since Michelle is traveling this week, she pulled out her Electric Eel mini spinning wheel to start spinning the Coopworth/Shropshire cross. She hopes to talk her Dad into helping her make a box for the battery to add some weight to the very light wheel.   Erica commented on how small the Electric Eel mini spinning wheel is, so Michelle had to get a picture that showed the size of the wheel. Here's a picture with the wheel sitting on the bottom of Michelle's sandal to keep it out of the sand and keep it from moving. Michelle does have big feet, but it may give an idea of the size of the wheel.     Erica Erica has finished spinning the Rambouillet in the colourway Gizmo from Fiber Nest Studio. According to Deb Robson's Fleece and Fiber Source book, Rambouillet began in France in the 1700's. Louis XVI was allowed to import 359 Spanish Merino to his estate in Rambouillet. His breeders bred for different specifications, thus creating the separate Rambouillet breed. When Erica showed her spinning to the Wool N Spinning Community she received several great descriptions pointing out that it is a very grippy and sproingy/springy yarn. Erica had noticed it was Targhee like, the grip is great for spinning, until it isn't. Erica experienced far more times of the fiber separating and pulling into the orifice than she does with other wools. In her post recording investigations, Erica learned that Targhee were bred from Rambouillet rams and a combination of other sheep. So it is no wonder that Rambouillet is more like Targhee than it is like Merino. Erica has also done a bit more sampling on her Damask warp. Since the colors she chose from Halcyon Yarn were out of stock, she ordered a red and black from Treenway Silks to test. Treenway has a variety of reds, fortunately the red they had in stock is so very close to the red from Halcyon that Erica liked. Let us know in the comments what you think of the difference (bottom sample that has been cut off the loom is Halcyon Yarn Gemstone Silk, upper cloth still on the loom is Treenway Silks). In this photo you can also see the area where the sample was mistreadled and inadvertently cause some very long floats. When weaving damask you only tie each thread down once in a 4 pick repeat, so missing a treadle creates a quite long float. After consulting with other drawloom weavers on Weavolution, Erica will be weaving her cowl face up on the loom to prevent this from happening. This is a cowl that was made for Erica when she was Queen. This is included, so listeners can see what she means by a 7th C Persian Cowl, it is a very different shape from what we modernly use the word cowl to describe.   Finally, Erica has finished weaving the third sample for the Collaboartive Cloth project, sett at 24 epi on the loom. She has embarked on this project with 3 other SCA spinners. The other members will spin the yarn and Erica will weave 4 meters of cloth for each member. She is really excited about this project, because she has always wanted to have a very authentic experience where she works with friends who specialize in spinning to make cloth for everyone. This is how communities functioned before the guild system. She finds this project is building even more a sense of community amoung her and her friends. She will also invite all the spinners over to weave a bit of their own cloth, if they chose to do so! She hopes, despite the current pandemic, that everyone will be able to see and touch the samples and the group can make a final decision, between the Merino and the Shetland, so they can embark upon the final project soon.

We live very connected lives and it can be very easy to live life in constant motion. But what if we took a step back and decided to live more intentionally, rather than by default? Today I have a very special guest on the show, my friend Erica Midkiff, who was one of the very first people to go through Future You, my signature one-on-one coaching program. Today, we dive into the idea of an “intentional pause,” the mindset shift that was the biggest game-changer for her in our work together, and how it completely transformed the way she shows up each day in her life and business (and how it can transform yours)—bringing more space, awareness, and intention to your every day. You’ll walk away knowing exactly how to stop doing #allthethings without a second thought and be more intentional about the actions that bring you more of the results you actually want.-Check out the show notes here!-When Erica and I started working together, she was feeling completely overwhelmed. In her own words, “I wasn’t sure why; I just knew that the way I felt was unsustainable and it was time to ask for help. Amanda helped me see that I was trying to do too much all at one time, feeling like every idea for change that popped into my head needed to be acted on immediately. My day-to-day life—staying at home with my almost-two-year-old while also trying to run a business—was often stressful instead of joyful.”Maybe you can relate? Erica Mandy is the host and content producer of theNewsWorthy a Monday through Friday podcast that shares fast, fair, and fun news you need in less than 10 minutes. She used her background in journalism combined with curiosity about what people wanted to create something new and different.   I'm excited about today's interview with Mandy, and there are two things that you want to track. Number one is that it is an interesting model. I've spent a decade plus in podcasting, and I've heard there is nothing new. Well Erica did something new. Number two is that it does have the potential to change things. With new announcements from Pandora, Spotify, and Apple the industry is changing, and this is a model that might change with it. We also talk about New & Noteworthy. Tip of the Week: Instead of worrying about what microphone to use, you should be focussing on what your message is. What are you telling your audience? What makes you and your show unique? Once you figure that out, the microphone will come into play. Don't start with the tech. Start with the message, and you'll have a podcast that lasts.   Changing Behavior By Doing Something Different with Erica Mandy: [02:13] Erica Mandy produces, compiles, and performs a daily news show. I thought it wasn't going to catch on or last, but it is lasting and everyone loves it. [02:41] Erica has been a broadcast journalist for the last ten years. She realized that people she knew weren't watching the news because if was too depressing or boring or they would get lost in biased clickbait. [03:06] She felt she was uniquely positioned to provide something different. She loves good news and likes to tell things in an upbeat way. She also has a background in journalism. [03:16] She quit her job and started theNewsWorthy. Erica has had success in the first few months and got her first sponsor Sol Organics who sell organic cotton sheets and bedding. [03:39] Her show is M-F and it comes out at 4:00 AM Eastern time. Her show production takes about 3-4 hours to write, about an hour and a half to record and edit, then she publishes, writes an email, and does the show notes. [03:58] It's a full day. The morning before that is when I do social media, networking, and marketing. [04:17] She is also testing a weekly interview. [04:30] When she launched she was picked up by iTunes. She was on New & Noteworthy for about two weeks. She said she got about 700-1000 new listeners that stuck with her. [05:58]  A Siri based daily news show is announced by iTunes. Pandora is working on creating a podcast version of the music genome project. Spotify is embracing everybody with some new podcast formats, images, and news. [06:34] A lot of people seem to be picking up the idea that we might need daily newscast. [07:06] People still want to know what is going on while they are on the go. Then they can read more about the things that interest them the most. [07:10] Erica started theNewsWorthy because she knew that it was what she wanted and other people were telling her it was what they wanted too. [07:32] Because there is so much potential with podcasts the possibilities are endless. Traditional media is the last one to get on a trend. Erica wanted to be part of the news that was leading the way. [08:47] Online streaming now offers sports and people are cutting cable more than ever. [09:22] Erica thinks there is a whole path for current recent podcasts that inform you with current news. [10:01] Once we figure out to offer things people will jump on it. [10:09] Paul thinks smart speakers, voice activated content, the daily routine, and the Pandora podcast genome project brings all of this together. [10:21] Erica's listeners are sticking around for 95% to 104% of her show. She gives listeners a new story every minute or so and keeps it moving. [11:33] Because people are consuming the whole show the format is viable. [11:55] Erica also offers links to all of the stories that she references on her show notes. [12:56] The change in behavior and the consumption and how podcasts somehow become part of someones day. A daily show is as natural as a morning cup of coffee. [14:15] How having a broader niche requires a sponsor with a broader market. [15:56] Erica is open to partnerships. If the emerging markets open things up, she feels that is really exciting. [16:57] How we know a lot about the podcast consumers. Teaming up with podcast sponsor acquisition experts will be interesting. [17:57] In the future, Erica would love to partner with an organization that provides a platform for discovery along with multi platform options like video. She is open to partnerships and being in more than one place. [19:45] She is open to having writing and editing help. She would like to have more help, so she can focus on the marketing and business development side of things. [20:57] Changes in behavior and opportunities that Erica's show represents. [21:44] When Erica started, she looked for what wasn't happening. She focused on her news and journalism background and looked for something different that wasn't already being done. [23:04] There are still options out there, and we can still change behaviors.
