This week, Aaron and David take listeners behind the headlines to break down the explosive growth of fraud in programs like Minnesota’s Somali-run daycares and Medicaid housing services, and the human cost of underregulated refugee resettlement. They explore the influence of billionaire-funded gender ideology initiatives, shifts in family courts, and victories in red-state policy reforms. They also touch on the political implications of Ohio’s lieutenant governor candidate picks, the ban on AI in higher education, and US actions against Venezuela’s narco-state regime. Neuroscientist, educator, and bestselling author Dr. Jared Cooney Horvath joins the podcast to reveal why classroom technology may be undermining your child’s ability to learn. From 1-to-1 laptops to constant smartphone access, he explains the research linking screens to lower cognitive performance, disrupted memory, and weaker problem-solving skills—and why banning phones can boost learning by up to 11 hours per week and slash behavioral problems by 80 percent. Jared also uncovers the hidden motives behind the tech push in schools, the “mode effect” that makes handwriting far more effective than typing, and why teaching kids how to think beats teaching them how to use tools, even in our high-tech world. More About Jared Cooney Horvath Jared Cooney Horvath (PhD, MEd) is a neuroscientist, educator, and best-selling author who specializes in human learning and brain development. He is the creator of The Learning Blueprint, an international award-winning program helping educators and students understand how learning actually works. Jared has conducted research and taught at Harvard University, Harvard Medical School, and the University of Melbourne, and has worked with more than 1,000 schools around the world. He is the author of six books, has published over fifty research articles, and his work has appeared in The New Yorker, The Atlantic, The Economist, Harvard Business Review, and ABC’s Catalyst. Jared currently serves as Director of LME Global, an organization dedicated to bringing cutting-edge brain and behavioral science to educators, students, and communities. Drew Perkins welcomes neuroscientist and acclaimed author Jared Cooney Horvath to dissect his new book, The Digital Delusion, which provides a rigorous, evidence-based critique of edtech. Links & Resources Mentioned In This Episode Horvath doesn't mince words, arguing that the majority of student-facing, internet-connected devices should be removed from schools. He reveals that over 60 years of consistent data supports his claim that the integration of digital tools is fundamentally detrimental to effective learning. This isn't a Luddite's complaint; it's a detailed exploration of the Neuroscience of Learning. The harm is explained through three primary biological mechanisms, which Horvath asserts are unfixable with software. First, screens train students to multitask, leading to a constant, detrimental battle for attention in a learning environment. Second, the use of devices inhibits the essential human-to-human interaction necessary for empathetic synchrony—the mirroring and mimicking critical for deep cognitive and social development. Finally, we discuss the profound problem of Transfer of Learning. Horvath explains that by learning skills in an "easy" digital context, the ability to transfer that knowledge to a more complex, real-life (analog) task is significantly diminished, making the learning "slower, worse, and less deep." The data suggests tech only works in highly narrow contexts, primarily for surface-level "drill and kill" facts or basic remediation, often through intelligent tutors. The conversation then shifts to the persistent educational conflicts, notably the ongoing tension between Explicit Instruction vs Inquiry and Project-Based Learning (PBL). Horvath connects the rigidity of entrenched positions to a "sunk cost" phenomenon, where individuals find it too "costly" to change their public stance, even when facing opposing evidence. We delve into the complexities of teaching, noting that both traditional and progressive approaches are valid at different points in a student's journey, but both are fundamentally flawed when they adhere rigidly to a single philosophy. Furthermore, we explore the nature of Critical Thinking Skills and creativity. Horvath clarifies that while the mechanism for critical thinking is innate across all ages, its output is heavily constrained by the individual's available domain-specific knowledge. The science of learning, he argues, has nothing to say about specific pedagogy (such as direct instruction versus exploratory learning); it only describes the biological constraints of how the brain learns. Therefore, neuroscience should serve as a powerful tool to inform and improve any existing pedagogical approach, not dictate a single one. Horvath offers a vision for the ideal classroom, suggesting elementary spaces should be "basically outdoor," focused on play and minimal tech. For older students, he advocates for a high level of control, confining computer use to specialized lab settings—much like woodshop or physical education. This perspective provides an essential counter-narrative for any K-12 educator or administrator struggling to balance modern tools with effective, long-term student success. Timestamped Episode Timeline Time Segment/Topic [00:00] Introduction of Jared Cooney Horvath – Teacher-turned-neuroscientist, focus on "human learning" and applying neuroscience to educational practices. [01:28] Jared's Educational Background and Views on Pedagogy – Describing his K-12 experience as a "mishmash" that didn't adhere rigidly to "traditional" or "progressive" labels. [03:45] The Digital Delusion Book & EdTech Critique – Introducing the book and its core argument: edtech fundamentally harms learning, advocating for reducing/eliminating non-essential computer use in classrooms. [07:18] EdTech and Learning Outcomes/The Swedish Example – Advocating for removing student-facing, internet-connected devices; citing Sweden's ban on general tech use in schools (confining computers to a lab). [08:09] Exceptions for Technology Use – Tech only works effectively in narrow contexts: self-adaptive "intelligent tutors" for surface-level (drill and kill) learning and remediation. [09:46] Mechanisms of EdTech Harm (Biological) – Outlining the three primary ways screens harm learning: Attention, Empathetic Synchrony, and Transfer. [12:29] Transfer and Complexity in Learning – Discussion on how learning in an easy digital context makes skill transfer to a harder, real-life analog context almost impossible. [15:54] AI, Pedagogy, and Creating Learning Tools – Drew's example of using AI for quizzes; Jared's counter that learning is "slower, worse, and less deep" than if the student created the tools themselves. [18:07] The Ideal Classroom – Jared's vision for elementary (outdoor, play-focused, minimal tech) and middle/high school (human-element focus, highly controlled tech use in a lab). [20:17] Critical Thinking and Metacognition – Discussion on the definition of critical thinking, with Jared suggesting metacognition is a more accurate term for the process. [23:02] The Role of Knowledge in Critical Thinking – The mechanism is universal, but the outcome of critical thinking without knowledge is "very very narrow or pointless." [27:43] Creativity and Questioning – Defining creativity as "rearranging of your current memory structures." The role of knowledge and safety/context in the ability to ask good questions. [35:47] Tension Between Traditional and Progressive Education – Observing the acute conflict in Australia/UK; asserting both approaches are correct at different points but wrong when they are too rigid. [40:34] Science of Learning and Pedagogy – Stressing that the science of learning only concerns biological mechanisms and should inform teaching, not dictate a specific pedagogy. [43:08] AI Model Training and Pedagogical Parallels – Drew's question on parallels between AI's "symbolism" vs. "connectivism" and educational philosophies. [44:15] Critique of AI and Cognitive Models – Jared's view that AI conceptualization has mistakenly influenced brain understanding and that current AI models may be at a peak without a new theoretical framework. [46:02] Book and Contact Information – Sharing website (www.lmegglobal.net), new book (The Digital Delusion), and YouTube channel. [46:47] Closing Remarks – Final thoughts on recognizing the "gray zone" in complex educational issues.

The episode features the announcement of MagicSchool.ai as the 2024 HOET Final Four Winner and an EdTech recommendation for Vocabulary Quest, a gamified vocabulary learning platform. Additionally, Chris bids farewell to SatChat, reflecting on its impact on the education community. Resources Mentioned: MagicSchool.ai - 2024 HOET Final Four Winner Vocabulary Quest - EdTech Recommendation Every Tech Tool in the Classroom Should Be Ruthlessly Evaluated - Article by Jessica Grose SatChat - Discussion on SatChat ending 2024 HOET Final Four Winner: MagicSchool.ai We're excited to announce MagicSchool.ai as the 2024 HOET Final Four Winner! MagicSchool.ai stands out for its innovative approach to personalized learning and real-time performance assessment. This AI-based tool is transforming how students engage with educational content, making learning more interactive and effective. Congratulations to MagicSchool.ai for this well-deserved recognition. EdTech Thought: The End of an Era? Goodbye SatChat We begin with a reflective EdTech Thought segment, marking the end of an era with the conclusion of SatChat. For years, SatChat has been a cornerstone of the education community, providing a platform for educators to connect, share insights, and grow together. Hosts Billy Krakower, Scott Rocco, and Brad Currie have created a lasting legacy, and we take a moment to honor their contributions and discuss the future of such initiatives in the education space. EdTech Recommendation: Vocabulary Quest Our EdTech Recommendation for this episode is Vocabulary Quest, an innovative platform that gamifies vocabulary learning. Whether you're a student, professional, or language enthusiast, Vocabulary Quest transforms the often tedious task of memorizing new words into an engaging adventure. With gamified levels, interactive stories, puzzles, and personalized learning paths, this tool not only makes learning fun but also significantly boosts retention rates. Here's why Vocabulary Quest stands out: Gamified Learning: Turn vocabulary acquisition into an exciting game with progressive challenges. Personalized Stories and Puzzles: Engage with content tailored to your interests, enhancing learning efficiency. Advanced AI Memory Aids: Benefit from mnemonic devices, imagery, and associations designed to make words stick. Comprehensive Exam Preparation: Ideal for students preparing for exams like the SAT, ACT, or SSAT. Professional Communication: Elevate your career by mastering the right words for effective communication. Featured Content: Ruthlessly Evaluating EdTech Tools In our featured content, we dive into Jessica Grose's compelling article, "Every Tech Tool in the Classroom Should Be Ruthlessly Evaluated," published in The New York Times on April 24, 2024. Grose highlights the complex and often problematic landscape of educational technology, urging educators to take control of tech integration in their classrooms. Key takeaways from the article include: Educator-Driven Tech Use: Technology should be selected based on data and teacher experience, not dictated by tech companies. Commercial Origins of EdTech: Many tools were initially created for commercial purposes, which may not align with educational outcomes. Necessity and Good Standard: Schools should assess whether a tech tool is essential and beneficial from ethical and pedagogical perspectives. Privacy Concerns: Protecting student data is paramount. Solutions include destroying data after use and establishing an independent body to oversee digital product quality. Centralized Tech-Vetting: Post-pandemic, there is a need for standardized evaluation of tech tools at the district level. Classroom-Level Audits: Regularly audit tech tools to ensure they serve their intended purpose without creating additional problems. Authentic Connections: Beyond academics, technology should foster human relationships and community building in schools.

Feedback & Shout Outs (1:34) I am thrilled to welcome Tech Tools for Teachers and Speaking with Students to the Education Podcast Network! These two new shows bring valuable perspectives and insights to the education community. Tech Tools for Teachers, hosted by Shanna Martin, offers practical advice and recommendations for integrating technology into the classroom. Meanwhile, Speaking with Students, hosted by Will Andresen, provides a platform for students to share their experiences and perspectives on education. Congratulations to Mike Dodge, Sam Fecich, Chris Stuchko, Dan Gallagher, and Steve Chisnell for winning a t-shirt! I hope they enjoy wearing their shirts and spreading the word about the House of #EdTech. Thank you for your support and for being part of this community. EdTech Thought (6:00) My thought is a satirical critique of replacing human teachers with ChatGPT. I point out the absurdity of relying on a cold algorithm that spits out answers like a vending machine and can make witty jokes and puns. I used quotes from supposedly satisfied users of ChatGPT to highlight the negative consequences of using such a program, such as the lack of original thought and critical thinking. I end by mocking the idea of upgrading the personality of ChatGPT, implying that it is ridiculous to think that a machine can replace human teachers who can provide a personal connection and expertise. Featured Content (8:32) Mobile devices have become increasingly popular in education due to their ability to provide students with access to educational resources and tools anytime and anywhere. With the rise of mobile technology, students can now use their smartphones and tablets to access educational apps, e-books, online courses, and educational videos, among other resources. Mobile devices also offer teachers and professors the opportunity to provide personalized learning experiences and interactive activities that enhance student engagement. One of the biggest advantages of mobile devices in education is their ability to promote digital literacy and 21st-century skills. Through the use of mobile technology, students can develop critical thinking, problem-solving, and collaboration skills, which are essential for success in today's workforce. Additionally, mobile devices can help bridge the digital divide by providing equal access to educational resources for students in remote or underprivileged areas. However, it is important to note that the integration of mobile devices in education should be done strategically and with proper planning to ensure that it aligns with the learning objectives and goals of the curriculum. Are you committing one of these technology mistakes in your classroom?I know I sure have from time to time.As our classrooms become more and more digital-friendly and as we integrate more and more technology instruction, we're bound to run into a few snags along the way.
