This January marks the anniversary of the conclusion of Operation Just Cause, which began days before Christmas, on December 20th, 1989, when about 27,000 US troops deployed to Panama. Their mission was to capture Panama's notorious dictator, General Manuel Noriega, whom the US had indicted for drug trafficking. Noriega had also been suppressing unarmed demonstrators, gathering intelligence on the local population, and harassing Americans- wielding weapons from the Soviet bloc. International Spy Museum Executive Director Chris Costa was an intelligence officer on the ground during the invasion, and he takes us from the first mortar to the moment when Noriega surrendered to US forces. Long before FBI informant David Rupert set foot in Ireland, a hidden web of espionage was already embedded in the North. In this episode, investigative journalist and author Cara McGoogan looks beyond the headlines to examine the depth of British involvement inside IRA operations. Speaking with Bond novelist Charlie Higson, she unpacks why the agent known as Stakeknife looms so large in a recently released official report - and what the case reveals about a wider culture of collusion, protection, and unchecked power.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
We're unpacking the chaotic, controversial, and wildly influential life of Aleister Crowley, the so-called “The Beast 666” and one of the most polarizing figures in modern occult history. From his strict Christian upbringing and rebellion into ceremonial magick, to sex magick, Thelema, and the infamous phrase “Do what thou wilt,” we explore what Crowley actually believed versus how he lived. We examine his role in shaping modern witchcraft and Wicca, his influence on tarot and pop culture, and why his legacy still sparks debate today. Along the way, we cover scandals, cult dynamics, drugs, power, misogyny, and the uncomfortable truth that harmful people can still leave lasting spiritual ideas behind. A nuanced, critical, and occasionally unhinged look at why modern witchcraft can't fully escape Crowley's shadow.Join our Patreon for bonus episodes, magical downloads, and unhinged side quests: https://www.patreon.com/demystifymagicPre-order Molly's book Mundane Magic A Lazy Witch's Guide to Hacking Your Brain, Building a Daily Practice, and Getting Stuff DonePreorder Mundane Magic & Join the Virtual Book Tour: Celebrate the release of Molly's new book with an exclusive online event on Feb 21, 12 PM EST. Julian Fisher is a former spy who has written a great book called, Think Like a Spy. Julian returns to the Break It Down Show with Pete A Turner and Ken Orrock. Get Think Like a Spy on Amazon at amzn.to/4jRD4Av Every day, intelligence officers achieve the unimaginable. They persuade people to share classified secrets with them. To become traitors, in fact. And their targets do it willingly, despite the risk of imprisonment, torture and, even, execution. Spies achieve this thanks to their structured use of nine secret skills of espionage. In Think Like a Spy, you'll learn these techniques and how to adapt them for effective and ethical use in your own life. A good spy is a people-person. She knows how to identify a potential agent, how to attract their attention and what to do to build an enduring relationship with them. From this base, she will coax out personal information to work out what makes her target tick. She will use that knowledge and her understanding of human psychology to her advantage while winning lasting commitment from her new ally. All these skills can be mastered and turned to use in civilian life. The author realised that he used all of them in his own progress from the poorest postcode in Britain to Oxford University, into a blue-blooded stockbroking firm, and on to a thrilling and varied career in the security and intelligence worlds. Julian uses a wide variety of stories from this journey to illustrate how spy skills can be adapted to situations and challenges that we all face.

On this riveting episode of the Spybrary Spy podcast, British political journalist Tim Shipman is once again in conversation with David McCloskey, a former CIA analyst turned novelist, discussing his fourth and most ambitious book yet, The Persian. Departing from his CIA-rooted earlier work, McCloskey dives into the morally murky waters of the Israeli-Iranian shadow war. The novel, a high-stakes standalone thriller, follows a Mossad operation and an Iranian-born dentist-turned-reluctant-spy. They discuss the challenges of writing beyond American intelligence, the process of accessing former Mossad officers for research, the rich culture and contradictions of Iran, and the psychological complexity of agent-handler relationships. The episode also teases McCloskey's next book, the return of Artemis Proctor, and exciting developments for screen adaptations. So what is The Persian by David McCloskey all about, Shane? Kamran Esfahani, a dentist living out a dreary existence in Stockholm, agrees to spy for the Mossad after he's recruited by Arik Glitzman, the chief of a clandestine unit tasked with running targeted assassinations and sabotage inside Iran. At Glitzman's direction, Kam returns to his native Tehran and opens a dental practice there, using it as a cover for the Israeli intelligence agency. Kam proves to be a skillful asset, quietly earning money helping Glitzman smuggle weapons, run surveillance, and conduct kidnappings. But when Kam tries to recruit an Iranian widow seeking to avenge the death of her husband at the hands of the Mossad, the operation goes terribly wrong, landing him in prison under the watchful eye of a sadistic officer whom he knows only as the "General." And now, after enduring three years of torture in captivity, Kamran Esfahani sits in an interrogation room across from the General, preparing to write his final confession. Kam knows it is too late to save himself. But he has managed to keep one secret—only one—and he just might be able to save that. In this haunting thriller, careening between Tehran and Tel Aviv, Istanbul and Stockholm, David McCloskey delivers an intricate story of vengeance, deceit, and the power of love and forgiveness in a world of lies. Praise for The Persian: [The Persian] builds to high drama and twists with characters you care about.… Deep and satisfying... keeps the McCloskey traits of great tradecraft and headlong dash to the end. It proves he is a great spy writer. Tim Shipman, Spybrary and The Specator It is no spoiler to say that what David McCloskey has given us in The Persian is a tragedy—a work of spy fiction that, stripped of its technological trappings, would not have been out of place on the Athenian stage. Stephen England, Author The Persian is a novel written by someone who understands not just how espionage works, but how it feels, the waiting, the second-guessing, and the quiet moments where people realise what they've traded away to stay in the game. I applaud David for writing a standalone novel rather than the familiar waters of his Artemis Proctor series. Shane Whaley Editor-In-Chief, Spybrary.com
Communication Techniques from a Retired Spy Why Deception Fails: The Rule for Rapport Episode 289 (JJ is based in Ottawa) Repeat of episode #79 In this conversation with JJ Brun, we explore: how a contact handler succeeds without “shooting your way out” why names act as a fast track to trust why deception breaks rapport and authenticity restores it how to listen and observe so you earn better information how to create a safe environment for someone's real story what to say when you can't promise outcomes but want cooperation how to adapt your message to different communication styles how to “complete” interactions by finding common ground ----- About our guest JJ Brun: JJ Brun was a "Contact Handler" in a war zone in Bosnia Herzegovina. If conversation is a superpower, most companies are running on kryptonite. We dive with Don Weber—global communication strategist, human intelligence expert, and former U.S. field operative—into what makes people open up, buy in, and stay loyal, from war zones to boardrooms. When texts replace tough talks and bots gatekeep support, trust evaporates. Don shows how to recover it with presence: read the room, listen first, and choose the right channel for the moment. We explore the hidden math behind modern miscommunication. AI floods hiring with lookalike résumés while starving teams of context. Customer service scripts cut costs and quietly cut revenue. Leaders push top-down memos that morph on the way to the front line. Don breaks down practical fixes: build cross-functional decision rooms before major changes, keep messages repeatable and simple, and empower teams to solve issues in one touch. From greeting customers by name to delivering hard news live, small, human acts compound into retention and referrals no campaign can buy.Don's field stories underline the stakes. In places where a wrong read could cost a life, he learned to track breath, posture, and micro-expressions—and to let silence do the heavy lifting. That same discipline turns meetings into decisions, negotiations into agreements, and talent into believers. We also tackle leadership myths, from the Jack Welch halo to the idea that volume equals authority. The strongest voice is usually the last to speak, the one that listened the most.If you lead a team, run a brand, or simply want your words to land, this conversation gives you scripts, mindsets, and habits you can use today. Wegener shares his personal background in U.S. Army intelligence and the CIA, how he transitioned into writing, and why he chose lesser‑known Cold War stories—especially those involving Polish resistance movements—for his novel. The conversation highlights the book's unique setting in post‑World War II Poland, the inclusion of strong female lead characters inspired by real women in intelligence history, and Wegener's ongoing research and future novels exploring other overlooked Cold War events. Throughout the episode, listeners gain insights into both the historical foundations of his fiction and the personal experiences that shaped his interests. Sickmann reflects on that defining moment in American history, the lessons it still holds today, and his current mission as a spokesman for Folds of Honor, supporting military families across the country. Later, Kenneth Rosen, author of “Polar War: Submarines, Spies and the Struggle for Power in a Melting Arctic,” breaks down why the Arctic has become a global flashpoint. When The Night Manager aired in 2016, it was an instant success. Based on the 1993 John le Carré novel of the same name, the series centered on former British soldier Jonathan Pine. In the show, Pine is recruited by MI6 to infiltrate the secret network of a notorious arms dealer. Ten years later, the series returns, despite the fact le Carré never wrote a sequel before he died. Georgi Banks-Davies, the director of this second season, gives us a behind the scenes look at how the series charts new territory for Pine in the world of espionage. Episode Summary:In this episode of Explaining History, Nick turns to the global dimensions of the Russian Revolution. Drawing on Robert Service's Spies and Commissars: Bolshevik Russia and the West, we explore how the events of 1917 reverberated far beyond Petrograd. We delve into the chaotic collapse of the Romanov dynasty and the fragile "dual power" that followed. Why did the liberal Provisional Government fail to consolidate power? And how did the Bolsheviks—a small group of exiles caught completely by surprise—navigate their way back to Russia? From the euphoric reaction of emigre circles in London (where Maxim Litvinov tried to shave with toothpaste in his excitement) to the geopolitical chess game played by Britain, France, and the US, we examine the revolution not just as a Russian event, but as a pivotal moment in the First World War. Nick also discusses the historiographical battles over the period—was it a coup, a popular uprising, or a tragedy?—and why historians like Service and Orlando Figes have faced the ire of the modern left.Plus: A final reminder for students! Our Russian Revolution Masterclass is this Sunday, January 25th. U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent on Jan. 20 expressed confidence that the United States and European countries would find a solution to the Trump administration's effort to acquire Greenland. Bessent, speaking to reporters on the sidelines of the World Economic Forum's annual meeting in Davos, Switzerland, dismissed what he called "hysteria" about a possible trade war.The UK government on Jan. 20 approved plans for China to build its largest embassy in Europe, in London, in a bid to improve ties with Beijing despite warnings from British and U.S. lawmakers that the facility could be used for spying. d
“The Spies” (The Mandalorian, Chapter 23) presents a real good news/bad news situation for the Mandalorians. The good news: Mandalore is habitable! The tribes have united! There are only a few terrible megafauna left to terrorize the planet! The bad news: The Imperial remnants have formed a Shadow Council following up on allllllll of their predecessors' special interests, and Moff Gideon is angling to be their boss. This week, we're talking through the good (the Child piloting IG-11's corpse) as well as the bad and ugly (the rise of fascism throughout the galaxy once more). The Letter of Jude E3 — After the letter's opening appeal, Jude (or Judah) begins warning corrupt members of a Jewish messianic church community who cast off restraint and live openly immoral lives. He does so with an ancient rhetorical technique found in both the Hebrew Bible and the Dead Sea Scrolls. Jude shares three stories of rebellion in the Hebrew Bible: the spies fearful of the promised land in Numbers 13-14, the “sons of God” in Genesis 6, and the inhabitants of Sodom and Gomorrah in Genesis 19. Then he draws comparisons to the corrupt church members, promising they'll receive the same judgment. Why does Jude write this way about the moral crisis in a church? What is he trying to communicate? In this episode, Jon and Tim explore verses 5-8, unpacking the dense biblical references and what they would have meant to Jude and his audience.FULL SHOW NOTESFor chapter-by-chapter summaries, referenced Scriptures, and reflection questions, check out the full show notes for this episode.CHAPTERSA Jewish Rhetorical Technique (0:00-18:10)Rebellion of the Spies, Sons of God, and Sodom and Gomorrah (18:10-36:41)Concluding Thoughts on the First Triad (36:41-51:54)OFFICIAL EPISODE TRANSCRIPTView this episode's official transcript.BIBLEPROJECT JUDE TRANSLATIONView our full translation of the Letter of Jude.REFERENCED RESOURCESThe Dead Sea Scrolls (Pesharim)Check out Tim's extensive collection of recommended books.SHOW MUSIC“Fellowship” by Lofi Sunday, Cassidy Godwin“Peace With You ft. Shane Harris joins Matt to discuss his latest reporting for The Atlantic on one of the most destabilizing ideas circulating inside the Trump administration: the U.S. acquisition of Greenland. Shane explains how an idea once dismissed as a punchline is now being treated by U.S. and European officials as a real contingency, and why Denmark and Greenland view it as an existential threat. They examine how the proposal took shape inside Trump's orbit, why political and intelligence pressure campaigns may already be backfiring, and what unilateral action—by force or fiat—would mean for NATO and the future of the transatlantic alliance.Subscribe and share to stay ahead in the world of intelligence, global issues, and current affairs.Read Shane's reporting on Greenland with Isaac Stanley-Becker and Jonathan Lemire: https://www.theatlantic.com/national-security/2026/01/greenland-trump-venezuela-nato/685511/Read Shane's other work at The Atlantic: https://www.theatlantic.com/author/shane-harris/Follow Shane on X and Bluesky:https://x.com/shaneharrishttps://bsky.app/profile/shaneharris.bsky.socialPlease share this episode using these links Audio: https://pod.fo/e/37aa41YouTube: https://youtu.be/E3Szp68dFh0Support Secrets and SpiesBecome a “Friend of the Podcast” on Patreon for £3/$4: https://www.patreon.com/SecretsAndSpiesBuy merchandise from our shop: https://www.redbubble.com/shop/ap/60934996Buy us a coffee: https://buymeacoffee.com/secretsandspiesSubscribe to our YouTube page: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCDVB23lrHr3KFeXq4VU36dgFor more information about the podcast, check out our website: https://secretsandspiespodcast.comConnect with us on social media Bluesky: https://bsky.app/profile/secretsandspies.bsky.socialInstagram: https://instagram.com/secretsandspiesFacebook: https://facebook.com/secretsandspiesSpoutible: https://spoutible.com/SecretsAndSpiesFollow Chris and Matt on Bluesky:https://bsky.app/profile/chriscarrfilm.bsky.socialhttps://bsky.app/profile/mattfulton.netSecrets and Spies is produced by F & P LTD.Music by Andrew R. In this Thursday Headline Brief of The Wright Report, Bryan covers escalating violence against ICE officers in Minneapolis, mounting legal trouble for Democratic lawmakers, high-stakes global deal-making by President Trump, and shifting power dynamics involving Iran, China, Greenland, Ukraine, Africa, and Venezuela. Another ICE Officer Attacked in Minneapolis: An ICE officer was hospitalized after being beaten with a shovel by an illegal Venezuelan migrant and accomplices during a traffic stop. The attack followed Governor Tim Walz's public calls for resistance against ICE. Riots broke out as the officer defended himself by firing a single shot. Both the officer and attacker are expected to survive. Democrats on Defense Over the Renee Good Shooting: New medical reporting confirms the ICE officer previously shot by activist Renee Good suffered internal bleeding after being struck by her vehicle. Despite video evidence and DHS confirmation, Democratic leaders remain silent. The family has hired the attorney who represented George Floyd, signaling a civil lawsuit ahead. Slotkin Investigated and FBI Moves on Media Leaks: Senator Elissa Slotkin is under criminal investigation related to the "Seditious Six" video urging troops to refuse lawful orders. Separately, the FBI raided the home of a Washington Post reporter after a Navy veteran contractor was caught leaking classified Venezuela-related intelligence. Supreme Court Skeptical of Trans-Sports Lawsuit: Justices signaled strong resistance to claims that biological males with gender dysphoria must be allowed to compete in women's sports. Attorneys failed to define what constitutes male or female under Title IX, suggesting state-level bans will likely stand. Trump Pressures Iran Through Back-Channel Diplomacy: The Pentagon evacuated some personnel from Middle East bases as Trump delayed strikes after receiving assurances that Iran would halt executions of protesters. Brazil and the UAE signaled they may curtail trade with Iran to avoid U.S.-imposed tariffs, while China remains silent. Xi Floats a Hemisphere-Level Grand Bargain: China is reportedly open to pulling back from Central and South America if the United States reduces its commitment to Taiwan. Bryan asks whether reclaiming the Western Hemisphere would be worth that trade-off. Greenland and Ukraine Become Linked Leverage Points: Trump signaled that U.S. support for Ukraine may depend on concessions from Europe over Greenland. Denmark pushed back, but Trump argued Venezuela proved America will act decisively where Europe cannot. Tom Cock and Don McDonald kick off 2026 with a sharp, skeptical look at portfolio simplicity—what it really means, what it doesn't, and why promises like “no sacrifice in returns” should always raise an eyebrow. Using a Morningstar article as a springboard, they dig into active vs. index funds, one-fund and target-date strategies, and the behavioral traps that complexity creates. Listener calls drive deeper discussions around Avantis funds (AVGE vs. AVGV), value tilts, international exposure, Fidelity's zero-fee funds, and when simplicity actually beats sophistication. Along the way: holiday viruses, Jeopardy ETF fails, Tesla-as-a-value-stock arguments (sort of), and a reminder that knowing yourself as an investor matters more than chasing the “perfect” allocation. 0:04 Holiday hangover, fake presence, and welcoming 2026 1:27 Simplicity in investing and why complexity isn't intelligence 1:44 Morningstar's “simplify your portfolio” claim—skepticism engaged 3:01 Active funds vs. index funds (and Morningstar's awkward contradiction) 3:56 One-fund vs. multi-fund portfolios and why rebalancing is hard 5:24 Target-date funds as delegation for real humans 7:32 Hodgepodge-itis vs. fewer funds, fewer mistakes 8:52 Listener call: Roth IRA for an 8-year-old and AVGE vs. AVGV 12:20 Value tilt, international exposure, and long time horizons 13:44 AVGE vs. AVGV performance—why short-term results don't settle debates 16:57 VT compared to Avantis—diversification without tilts 17:32 Fidelity Zero funds—what's free and what's the catch 20:00 Jason from Sammamish: value, growth, Tesla, and confidence 23:36 SPY vs. SPYM and when cheap is just cheap 25:46 Listener call: escaping a Fidelity managed large-cap portfolio 29:58 What to say when an advisor tries to keep your money 31:24 Jeopardy contestants miss “ETF” (yes, really) 33:46 AVGE vs. VT—tilts, belief systems, and picking your poison Learn more about your ad choices.
