The Washington Roundtable is joined by Jeff Stein, the veteran political reporter and founding editor of the newsletter “Spytalk,” to examine Donald Trump's appointment of Bill Pulte as the new acting Director of National Intelligence, a position that, in theory, oversees the C.I.A., N.S.A., F.B.I., and fifteen other agencies. Pulte has no intelligence background and no national-security experience, but does have a track record of going after the President's perceived enemies. It's November of 1983, the closest the world came to nuclear war, some may argue even closer than the Cuban Missile Crisis of 1962. Yet the Able Archer 1983 exercise incident is relatively unknown by comparison. A series of events that started with the Soviet shootdown of a Korean Air Lines plane, ended with not one but two almosts, when it came to accidental nuclear war. This included a simulated nuclear release authority request that may have been seen in Moscow as the prelude to a first strike. How these events unfolded was a result of heightened Cold War tension, antagonism, and miscommunication. Brian Morra was a US Air Force intelligence officer who had a front row seat to this, and sits down with guest host Dr. Mark Jacobson to discuss how the world came to the brink of nuclear war.  Subscribe to Sasha's Substack, HUMINT, to get more intelligence stories: https://sashaingber.substack.com/ For more information about the International Spy Museum, visit:  https://www.spymuseum.org/ And if you have feedback or want to hear about a particular topic,  you can reach us by email at spycast@spymuseum.org. Since its emergence in 2014, the Wagner Group operated as the Kremlin's shadow army, deploying mercenaries across Africa and the Middle East. It gave Vladimir Putin plausible deniability, expanding Moscow's geopolitical influence by propping up leaders through military assistance and securing Moscow's economic interests through weapons deals and access to natural resources. UN experts and human rights organizations accused the mercenaries of disappearances, torture, executions, mass graves, rape, and pillaging. Three years ago this week, its financier and leader Yevgeny Prigozhin launched a failed rebellion. He then died an untimely death, and Putin's security services moved to assert direct control of the paramilitary. This week, Sasha sits down with expert Candace Rondeaux to discuss Wagner's successor, Africa Corps, which has kept the expeditionary force in Africa and Ukraine. The author of Putin's Sledgehammer: The Wagner Group and Russia's Collapse into Mercenary Chaos, she discusses Africa Corps' struggles and conquests as it helps keep Putin's war machine churning. Enjoyed this episode or the podcast in general? Send me a text message:A carrier strike doesn't start with bombs, it starts with knowing what's watching you. Today I'm telling the story of the ES-3A Shadow, one of the Navy's most unusual aircraft and one of its most valuable: a carrier-based SIGINT and ELINT platform designed to listen, identify, and geolocate enemy radar and communications while orbiting safely outside SAM range. With its spine canoe, bulbous fairings, and more than 60 antennas, the Shadow looked odd on the flight deck, but it could build an electronic order of battle that made every other jet smarter and safer. We break down electronic warfare in practical terms, separating electronic attack from electronic intelligence, and then walk through why the S-3 Viking was such a strong foundation for a long-endurance reconnaissance aircraft. From the Shadow's Ares II-derived mission suite to the AN/ALR-76 receiver system and APS-137 ISAR imaging, you'll hear how it could sort dense radio frequency chaos, spot low-probability-of-intercept radar behavior, and even help ID ships at range for over-the-horizon targeting. Then we get into the human side: four crew members working in a cramped, dim cabin, plus maintainers fighting salt air, catapult shocks, and nonstop tempo to keep a tiny fleet of 16 jets mission-ready. Finally, we dig into the most controversial chapter, the 1999 retirement and the budget choices that left carrier air wings without organic SIGINT for years, before comparing the Shadow's passive persistence to the EA-18G Growler's networked, kinetic approach and asking what a “Shadow 2” could look like today. If you enjoyed this deep dive into naval aviation history, electronic warfare, and intelligence support to strike operations, subscribe, share this with a friend, and leave a review. Bryan covers the deepening disconnect between a White House offering carrots and sticks and an Iranian regime whose Supreme Leader openly calls jihad his primary option, including new reporting that the IRGC is building secret assassination squads in Iraq to target US forces. He also tracks the global drone wars, from Ukraine bloodying Russia's refineries to illegal aliens charged in a plot to attack the White House grounds, and explains why Trump's deportation push is starting to bring down home prices and rent for American families. Plus, the fight over the Reflecting Pool in Washington DC and why Bryan sees it as a battle over whether Americans are allowed to celebrate their own country, China's tightening squeeze on critical minerals like indium, and the surprising mental health benefits of Nordic walking. Chris and Matt dig into the fine print of the U.S.-Iran memorandum signed this week by President Trump in Versailles, separating what Tehran banks immediately — sanctions relief, frozen funds, an open Strait of Hormuz — from what's still contingent on a future nuclear settlement, and why claiming victory now looks premature. From there, a Foreign Affairs piece reframes the war's aftermath: rather than breaking the Islamic Republic, the campaign may have hardened it, elevating a younger, more nationalist generation around Mojtaba Khamenei whose pragmatism is tactical rather than moral — and inviting an uneasy comparison to Putin's Russia. They close on new reporting that the Pentagon has quietly raised Israel to a "critical" counterintelligence threat, working through allegations of bugged DIA offices and eavesdropped negotiations against the longer history of allies spying on allies. SpaceX Stock Crashes: The Cursor Deal and Bond Offering Triggered the Drop

SpaceX stock dropped sharply this week, shedding roughly $620 billion in market value over two sessions as the post-IPO rally finally broke. SPCX fell 8.3% combined on June 17 and June 18, closing at $178.50, down from its June 16 peak of $225.64. That's a 20% drop in two days, the first sustained decline since SpaceX went public on June 12 at $135 per share in the largest IPO in history. This episode breaks down why SpaceX stock is dropping, what triggered the SPCX selloff, and what comes next for the most hyped IPO of 2026. The fall hit despite Moody's, Fitch, and S&P all assigning SpaceX investment-grade credit ratings on the same Thursday the stock dropped nearly 4%. The paradox is the story.Four triggers drove the SpaceX stock drop. First, the $60 billion all-stock acquisition of Cursor, announced June 16, signaled immediate dilution to anyone who bought SPCX on the open market. Second, a planned $20 billion bond offering raised an obvious question after SpaceX had just pulled in $75 billion from the IPO and committed $60 billion to Cursor: how much capital does this company actually need? Third, SPCX options started trading on June 17, giving short sellers a practical way to bet against the stock for the first time. Nearly 1 million call contracts traded on day one, putting SPCX among the busiest options names on Wall Street. Fourth, the fundamentals caught up. SpaceX posted a $4.28 billion net loss in Q1 2026, wider than the $528 million loss in the year-ago quarter, with xAI alone accounting for $2.5 billion of the operating charge. The float math is part of the volatility story. Only 4-5% of SpaceX shares are in the public float. Roughly 95% are locked up at IPO. Selling windows open in late July 2026, the standard lockup lapses in December 2026, and Musk's stake unlocks in June 2027. With limited liquidity, small flows move the SPCX stock price hard in both directions. The Gary Black "meme stock" critique landed because retail investors bought roughly the same amount of SPCX in three sessions as they bought Nvidia, Google, Amazon, Microsoft, Meta, QQQ, and SPY combined, according to Vanda Research. The broader picture matters for SPCX shareholders. SpaceX still trades at a $2.4 trillion market cap, the sixth-largest US company by value. The stock ended its first week as a public company 37% above its IPO price. But the xAI subsidiary that justifies a chunk of the trillion-dollar valuation is bleeding cash: $6.36 billion in 2025 operating losses on $12.7 billion in capex, and every one of xAI's 11 original co-founders had departed before the IPO. Musk himself said publicly in March 2026 that xAI "was not built right first time around."We also cover the other space-sector moves this week. Planet Labs (PL) dropped sharply after an earnings report showed margin pressure and near-term losses despite a record backlog, raising questions about whether satellite-data businesses can scale profitably. Intuitive Machines (LUNR) expanded its NASA partnership and shifted toward recurring lunar infrastructure revenue, a model that could de-risk a sector full of one-shot government contracts. We cover what the SpaceX stock drop means for retail SPCX holders, why the Cursor acquisition and bond offering hit confidence on the same week, what the lockup calendar through 2027 means for sustained selling pressure, and whether the post-IPO selloff is a healthy reset or the start of a bigger correction. Keywords: SpaceX stock drop, SPCX stock, SpaceX IPO, Elon Musk, $225 to $178, SPCX selloff, Cursor acquisition, SpaceX bond offering, xAI losses, Planet Labs PL stock, Intuitive Machines LUNR, AI bubble, Magnificent Seven, meme stock, SpaceX lockup, retail investors.

The FBI won't discuss exactly how Chinese spy Xu Yanjun came to the attention of special agents. Xu was handling a GE Aviation engineer in Ohio who specialized in composite fan-blade technology. That engineer, David Zheng, had been approached by an official from Nanjing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics, on LinkedIn with a request to give a presentation. So Zheng ended up traveling from his home in Ohio to China in the summer of 2017. Zheng delivered a talk on aviation technology and met officials from China's Ministry of State Security. That meeting included Xu, who paid Zheng's travel expenses and gave him a stipend. U.S. officials found Zheng carrying thousands in cash on his way back. Over the next year, Cincinnati-based FBI Special Agent Bradley Hull was part of a team that flipped Zheng to lure Xu out of China and, ultimately, into an American prison cell. Xu was the first Chinese spy to be extradited to the United States to stand trial. Meanwhile, DOJ has seen scandal after scandal during Blanche's tenure over the rapidly declining quality and credibility of its work, exemplified most recently by evidence of grand jury tampering, arguably, in the Broadview Six prosecutions.
