Only One Variety to Grow in the Garden If we only had to grow one variety of each crop in the garden, what would we choose and why? Imagine if you had a small 20 x 20 garden and could only pick one variety out of a list of crops, which would you choose to grow in your vegetable garden. The guys go over a list of ten different crops and the one variety they choose to grow if they were in this hypothetical situation. The first crop they discuss is tomatoes. Greg chooses the most popular tomato variety that we carry which is the Bella Rosa, while Travis decided on the SummerPick variety because of its impressive productivity and disease resistance in the garden. The next crop to only choose one variety to grow is peppers. Greg decided on growing the Mama Mia Giallo since he prefers to grill and stuff his peppers once harvested. While Travis decided on the Aruba Cubanelle Pepper which is a hybrid variety that is very productive and excellent to cook with on the homestead. As for cucumbers, Greg enjoys growing pickle varieties so he decided on the Calypso Cucumber because it's a little more versatile. However, Travis decided on the Olympian Cucumber which is a slicing variety that produces dark green uniformed cucumber. The next crop that they could only choose one variety to grow is summer squash. If Greg could only grow one variety of summer squash he would grow one of his favorites the Gentry Squash. As a crookneck squash, it is one of the easiest summer squashes to grow and matures fast in the vegetable garden. Travis also decided on a crookneck variety, the Gold Star has exceptional disease-resistance and is a heavy producer which makes it great for late spring/early summer plantings. As for the sweet corn, Greg went back and forth on a few different varieties, but he ended up choosing the Silver Queen Sweet Corn which is an older variety that has always performed well in the garden. Travis likes to grow the super sweet corn varieties, so he decided on the Temptress Sweet Corn which is one he grew recently and really liked with the overall production, harvesting, and storing. For greens, Greg went with the Savanna Mustard while Travis chose the Top Bunch 2.0 Collard. When it comes to choosing only potato variety to grow the guys both chose the Yukon Gold because of its exceptional flavor profile and storing ability once harvested. Moving along to onions, Greg decided on growing the Sweet Harvest which is another old school favorite of his since it is a flatter style onion variety. Travis chose another recent favorite of his which is the Plethora Onion. It is also a flatter style onion that has produced well in the garden this year. The last two crops left to choose from are lettuce and okra. For lettuce, the guys decided if they could only grow one variety it would be either the Coastal Star Romaine Lettuce or the Tehama Lettuce. For okra, Greg decided to switch up from his favorite variety and instead chose a newer variety which is the Jing Orange Okra. However, Travis stuck with his all-time favorite the Jambalaya Okra which he has tested against other okra varieties and it always outperforms them. Show and Tell Segment On the show and tell segment this week, Greg has harvested some Bule Gourds from the vegetable garden. All gourds can be shaped a little bit differently, some can be smooth or some can have warts. You can make several different crafts out of gourds, one of the most common is bowls. The guys also show off some great stocking stuffers for the holiday season this year. The first stocking stuffer is our Corn Silking Brush which is a great tool to use for easily removing silks from corn cobs. Another great stuffer is the wooden garden labels which work perfectly for labeling plants in your seed starting room or greenhouse. The third product is the Hoss garden planner which includes information on plant spacing, row spacing, and companion planting suggestions for multiple crops.

Welcome to the seventh and final in the Pledge Week series of episodes, putting up old bonus episodes posted to my Patreon in an attempt to encourage more subscriptions. If you like this, consider subscribing to the Patreon at http://patreon.com/join/andrewhickey . I'm glad to say that this pledge week has been successful enough that I may do another of these in a year or so. This one is about "Sixteen Tons" by Tennessee Ernie Ford, a record that was a huge influence on many, many artists in the mid fifties. ----more---- As we're reaching the end of 1956, and are also now on the fiftieth episode of the podcast, I thought it worth while trying to fill in a few gaps in the year we've been covering. And one of those gaps is the song "Sixteen Tons". We've mentioned this song a couple of times before -- we talked during the episode on Bo Diddley about how much he liked the song, and it also came up in the episode on Johnny Cash, but because it's not actually a rock and roll song as such we never looked at it in any more detail. But it's a song that was a huge hit in 1956, and which influenced many rock and rollers, and so we should probably have a quick look at its history: [Excerpt: Tennessee Ernie Ford, "Sixteen Tons"] That's the version of the song that became a hit in 1956, by Tennessee Ernie Ford, but it's not the original version of the song. The song was originally written by Merle Travis, one of the greatest country guitarists of all time. Merle Travis is credited with the invention of "Travis picking", a type of guitar playing where you play a bass line on the bottom two strings of the guitar while you play melody on the top two, with the melody syncopated as in ragtime -- it's a particular pattern that can be heard in everything from "The Boxer" by Simon and Garfunkel to "Just Breathe" by Pearl Jam. Travis' own playing was more complicated than the kind of music that now gets called "Travis picking", as you can hear on, say, "Cannonball Rag": [Excerpt: Merle Travis, "Cannonball Rag"] That owes a lot to ragtime and blues, not just to country music. While Travis is credited as the inventor of this style, he wasn't actually its originator. It was actually invented by a black blues guitarist called Arnold Shultz, who lived in Travis' home state of Kentucky. Shultz never made a record, but he taught the style to several other guitarists, including one called Kennedy Jones, who in turn taught it to many other guitarists -- including Ike Everly, who we'll be hearing more about in the second year of the main podcast. Travis spent the early part of his career as a fairly conventional country singer. He started off as one of the very first artists on Syd Nathan's King Records, before King made its turn to the R&B for which it became better known, but then in 1946 he signed to Capitol Records, where he made country-pop records like "Divorce Me COD": [Excerpt: Merle Travis, "Divorce Me COD"] But then Travis made an album called "Folk Songs of the Hills", which was very different from anything else he'd recorded before. This was before the long-playing vinyl record, and so it was a box of four singles, all of which consisted just of Travis singing to his own acoustic guitar accompaniment. The songs were a mixture of the traditional folk songs that the title led you to expect: [Excerpt: Merle Travis, "John Henry"] and new songs written by Travis himself, mostly about the culture of the mining areas of Kentucky where he grew up. And "Sixteen Tons" was one of those. In its original version it started with a spoken introduction explaining the concept of "company scrip", where someone could work for a company and be paid, not in cash that could be spent anywhere, but in tokens that could only be exchanged for goods sold by the company they worked for. This was an unfortunately common practice in the early and mid twentieth century, and those of you who've been following developments in cryptocurrencies and the big tech companies know that it's making a return at the moment: [Excerpt: Merle Travis, "Sixteen Tons"] Travis' recording was not particularly successful, and he went back to recording the honky tonk country records that he was successful with, but his career started to fade in the fifties. Until his friend Tennessee Ernie Ford, who had become nationally known thanks to some appearances on I Love Lucy, decided he wanted to record a new version of "Sixteen Tons" in 1956, a decade after Travis' original version. Ford's version is very, very, different from Travis' original. It cuts out the spoken explanation, and where Travis' version is a ragtime-influenced guitar track, Ford's is taken at a much lower pitch, and it is dominated by clarinet and fingersnaps. It's quite an astonishing arrangement, although it was soon imitated by all sorts of people, not least Peggy Lee in her version of "Fever": [Excerpt: Tennessee Ernie Ford, "Sixteen Tons"] Ford's recording became an instant classic, inspiring everyone from Johnny Cash to Bo Diddley to Tom Waits. It's a perfect marriage of song, arrangement, and vocalist, and one of those records that perfectly encapsulates its time. It also revived the career of Merle Travis, who had stopped having any commercial success with his electric recordings, despite being a musician's musician who every single other guitarist in the business looked up to. Suddenly people started to reevaulate Travis' work, and he became an integral part of the new folk music movement. Travis continued playing the electric guitar, but he started recording solo albums of electric guitar performances of traditional songs, and became known as one of the great exponents of country guitar, as well as one of the great songwriters, with his "Dark as a Dungeon" in particular, another song from "Folk Songs of the Hills", becoming a country standard. Tennessee Ernie Ford, meanwhile, went on to a career as a presenter of TV variety shows, and while he continued making records, none of them had the success, either artistically or commercially, of "Sixteen Tons". But you only need to make one classic like that per career for your career to be worthwhile.

Small Scale Market Farming There are a couple of different models that small scale market farmers use when it comes to growing your own food. The first model of market farming is CSA which is Community Supported Agriculture. This system is the process of buying shares upfront at the beginning of the season that the farmer delivers throughout the growing season. So if there is crop failure and the farmer cannot deliver the crops then you do not get your money back. Another small scale market farming model is selling at the farmers market. Nowadays, farmers markets have become a sometimes weekend-long event in several different towns or cities. From the guys experience the best farmers markets they have been to has been in higher populated areas. The last model, the guys discuss is the wholesale model or larger scale selling of produce. This can be for people that like growing produce and then sell it to country stores, restaurants,  or other local markets. Out of all three small scale market farming models, it can vary which one would work best for you as an individual and your personal preference. Popular Techniques & Common Problems Depending on certain areas in the North compared to the South, not every gardening technique works best. For example, a popular technique in some gardening areas is the use of 30-inch raised beds. Due to the guys growing so many different varieties of vegetables throughout the growing season the raised beds do not work for them personally. Another popular technique is heavy composting in the North. However, living in the South, we believe in providing good compost to improve soil structures for healthier plants, but heavy composting will burn out and leave our soils looking like sand. A method that is popular in the North and South is intensive growing. The meaning behind intensive growing is growing as much in the garden as you can in a given space. Some common problems that people have when getting started on small scale market farming is no experience growing in a garden, focusing too much on schematic details, and finding individuals that will buy on a consistent regular basis. Show and Tell Segment On the show and tell segment, the guys do not have too many vegetables growing in the garden due to the weather conditions. Greg is currently cleaning out his garden, but he still has some ProCut Sunflowers and Zinnias growing. In the greenhouse, he is starting to grow some Cockscomb. Travis has been growing cover crops in his garden. He recently planted Top Millet and Buckwheat that helps with improving the soil structure and weed suppression. The guys discuss some new seeds that will be coming very soon to the website. Viewer Questions Segment On the question and answer segment this week, the guys answer questions about when they are going to start growing collards and kale plants and where they get all of there knowledge from. Travis says if planting kale and collards by transplant start those at the end of August to early September. Greg says if you direct seeding plant them around the beginning of October. A lot of the knowledge that the guys have accumulated over the years is through informal and formal studying. Greg has done a lot of studying on insects, diseases, and received some certifications in agronomy and horticulture. As well as, experienced a lot of hands-on learning through various jobs in the industry. While Travis has a bachelor's and a master's degree in Biology and studied at the Ph.D. level for four years. Overall, a lot of the knowledge comes from getting in the garden and trying new growing techniques all year round in the vegetable garden. Now a postdoctoral fellow and researche Travis discusses his challenges with figuring out his path, keeping up with his studies and navigating a academia as a Black man with an agenda for inclusion and connectivity on campus and within the community. Allanté said it best, “use what little power you have to make change happen.” He did, and so can you.
