Dana and Tom discuss Martin Scorsese's Taxi Driver, the second of his movies to hit the podcast. Suffering from insomnia, disturbed loner Travis Bickle (Robert De Niro) takes a job as a New York City cabbie, haunting the streets nightly, growing increasingly detached from reality as he dreams of cleaning up the filthy city. When Travis meets pretty campaign worker Betsy (Cybill Shepherd), he becomes obsessed with the idea of saving the world, first plotting to assassinate a presidential candidate, then directing his attentions toward rescuing 12-year-old prostitute Iris (Jodie Foster). Travis's Maintenance Free Picks After a viewer asked the question, "What is the best maintenance free vegetables to grow in your garden?" Travis and Greg both came up with their list of five easiest to grow annual vegetables. As they answered this question, they realized that this is subject to change with every gardener, and that is why even in their two lists, there is deviation. When Travis was answering this question, he considered the following. Pest Pressure Disease Pressure Weed Pressure Harvest Frequency Water Needs Fertilizer Needs After considering all of the above, the number one maintenance-free crop Travis came up with was sweet potatoes. Their lack of need for fertilizers or water is what made him rank this one number one. Another bonus of sweet potatoes is down here in South Georgia. There are very few pests for them. Number two was collards, Travis explained how you get the most bang for your buck with this plant right here. Collards can be harvested six-seven times on one stalk, and each bundle of collards can sell for around five dollars, meaning that you could make almost forty bucks with just one plant. With our weather in South Georgia, you can also get around eight to nine months of growing time. Winter squash was Travis's number three, mainly the Cucurbita Machado species. This species is resistant to the squash vine borer, making it very easy to maintain. The fourth vegetable was okra, though it does have to require multiple harvests, it only has to be watered overhead around once a week. The last one on Travis's list was radish. This one was considered on the list because of its ease when direct seeding it and its very little water need. Greg's Maintenance Free Picks As Greg began to answer this question, he didn't think near as deeply and specific as Travis. He just responded to the question of what causes him the least amount of effort? After twenty-five years of growing this crop, Greg decided this would be his number one maintenance-free pick, Irish potatoes. Potatoes do not need a lot of water because of the time of year they get planted. His next two went hand in hand, summer squash and cucumbers, he explained that these are only maintenance free if you plant them early though. As you plant them early and keep them healthy, they are more likely to fight off diseases. He emphasized that every beginner gardener should be planting these two crops. They also both have a quick turn around with cucumbers only falling ten days behind the squash. Bush beans came in at number four because of their lack of disease and insect pressure. They also get ready to harvest pretty quickly. Now Greg's fifth choice was left up to the viewers to see what they knew about this highly confidential crop known as vine okra. Show and Tell Segment These weeks show and tell segment started with a little snack after lasts week pickled cucumber recipe Travis brought his sliced pickles for Greg to try. This simple recipe calls for flavored olive oil, salt, pepper, and a heavy dose of Cavender's Greek seasoning. Travis then talked about how he is going cucumber crazy! He showed one of his Diomede cucumbers out of his garden that some commercial guys would have considered a cull. They discussed even though the cucumber might look different; it still eats well. That conversation led to Mr.Greg explaining that he is trellising his cucumbers with a hog panel this year and how you have to kind of train your cucumbers up the board compared to the Hortonova Trellis. Two new cucumber varieties were uploaded to the site this week that will be great for our urban gardeners, Mercury and Olympian. One neat thing about Mercury is that it is a parthenocarpic, meaning it only produces female flowers. These varieties will be awesome for our gardeners with no pollinators or a lack of pollinators nearby. Support LGBT Stories by donating here www.ourlgbtstories.com Today we pick back up, on this journey of mine with me telling you a more about my first ever sorta real relationship with a man. Well, for me, at least it was real. The joy, excitement, fantasy, sadness, pain, and sorrow all were as real as they could get. I was a young, not even 20-year-old boy at the time, who thought he found the love of his life. Lord, was I wrong. As I mentioned in last week's episode, Travis (who's name isn't really Travis) and I met via the website, craigslist.com. The first day that we met, we had sex (which was also the first time I ever had anal sex with anyone). If you would like to hear more about that, I implore you to go listen to last week's episode "Me. #3". Okay, moving on... I think it's safe to say that just about everyone, no matter their sexual orientation or gender identity falls hard for the first person that they have sex with. And that's what happened to me. Looking back, it is clear that Travis and I had two very different agendas. See, he was so hot and cold. One day he wanted me over for a hot piece of ass, and the next, he would act like he didn't even know me, or more like, I was a bother to him. Meanwhile, here I am, all nieve just wanting to get married and run off into the sunset. I think the power dynamic in age was a major factor in all this. The friendship/relationship continued into something where I knew what to expect. When Travis called, I would go running. Why, because I was "in love." Kids, this isn't, love. This is a childhood infatuation. I am not saying that the things I was feeling at the time were not valid and did not feel real, because they were, and did. But it wasn't at all, love. Love is feeling completely and utterly supported. It's feeling valued and respected. Love is when you know that you can show up as you are to a relationship, and your partner encourages you to be just that, and even wants more of that from you. Love is in the moments of difficulty when things get hard, and you're not shamed for your feelings, but embraced for having feelings and living in the honesty of them. Love is peaceful. It is looking into someone's eyes when you speak to them, desiring their intimacy. Love is, unknowing - yet willing. Love is unconditional. What I had with Travis was not... love. He and I would start to spend more time together. We went from spending time only in his house to random outings, sometimes stopping by his work for coffee (he worked at Starbucks). Ew... is this some unconscious reason for my infatuation with Starbucks? Yeah, another thing I need to look at. Maryland isn't all that amazing when you're that age, but then again, where, in America, is. We would go shopping at Target or out to lunch, simple things. There was a time when we were driving in his car, he had a Saturn Vue (kids the company went under, oh the foreshadowing imagery). I finally got the nerve to hold his hand. It probably took everything in me. Remember, at this point, I'm really nothing more than a side piece. But the fact that we were hanging out in public more started to make me feel like maybe he was actually into me? So we are sitting there, he is driving, I'm in the passenger seat, and I reach over to grab his hand, and when mine touches his, he pulls away and says, "Kevin, no." I was so embarrassed. But I did what I did so well. I stayed small and said, "Okay," and went on like it didn't bother me. But it did. His constant toying with my heart, pulling me in, and pushing me away really was breaking me inside. But, little Kevin, he just wanted to be loved. All he wanted was to feel love. So I put a smile back on my face and went about the day together. Here is where things take a major turn for Travis and me. One day I get a call from him asking me if I wanted to go to an old military fort that is in Baltimore. It's no longer used, but it a historical land that people go and visit. You can't grow up in Maryland (one of the first 13 colonies) and not be a patriot. Of course, I said yes and headed over to his house. We jump in his car and head out for the day. Something was so different. Like really different. Travis was warmer, kinder, all around, more interested in me. On the way there, he grabbed and held my hand. WHAT! Wait a minute, what is happening? The man whom I have been drooling over and fucking for how many months now; was actually holding my hand; as we are on our way out to cute day adventure? OMG, I can finally die now... but not really cause I want more. Okay, so we get there right. We park and start walking around, looking at the ruins and etc. Actually, it was pretty cool, old cannons, and jail cells. It was something out of a history book. Then literally, the best moment of my entire life up until this point happens. And any LGBTQ person will most likely agree with me. We decide to sit down on this small hill out in the open. Its a beautiful summer day in Maryland to which made it all so much better. I sit down, and Travis comes up from behind me and sort gets on his knees and then wraps his arms around me, just holding me. Holy shit... every fiber of my body is going crazy. For the first time in my life, I am living in my truth OUT IN PUBLIC. And I didn't care who saw. All that matter was that moment of pure bliss. Then, he gets up and says, "Let's go." Boom, that was it. It was all over. From there, I believe we stopped at McDonald's and got lunch, and honestly, I don't remember the rest of the day. This was the last time I remember being intimate with Travis. Travis got cold again. Calls were not as frequent, and I do think that as that behavior surfaced again, I got tired of the back and forth. I have to be honest, I am not really the type of person that lets things go. Well, at 33, I am much more willing to now in life, but at that time, not so much. Maybe it was just life letting me know things with Travis, and I was over. It was then that things with my church were falling apart and that I end up moving to Pennsylvania. As I mentioned before, being me being in PA and him being in MD was just too much to maintain. So, we feel apart, and I didn't hear from him again until I contacted him in my mid-twenties. And that's it for this week. Next week, I'll pick back up in Florida. A place where I was finally a 100% out gay man living on his own, doing whatever he wanted. Sound fun, right? Well, don't be fooled. I was young. And dumb. To be continued. CONNECT WITH US ONLINE! In this week’s episode of Elixir Mix the panel interviews Travis Elnicky, software architect at Podium. Podium is Utah based company that has been using Elixir for three years. Travis explains Podium’s history and its experience adopting Elixir. When Travis started at Podium they were a small startup with, he was their 16th employee. They were using Ruby on Rails and focusing on collecting reviews for local businesses. When they saw a need for a messenger application, they tried a few solutions choosing Elixir because of the familiarity they felt coming from a Rails background. After switching to Elixir, Podium grew rapidly. Now Podium has 700 employees, 130 of whom are engineers. Travis discusses with the panel how things are run over at Podium. Their teams are aligned around products and features. This makes all their engineers' full-stack developers. Podiums teams run with a lot of autonomy, they also have teams that help with internal tooling to tie the products together. The panel is curious about the recruitment process at Podium. Travis explains that their hiring is mostly based on referrals, which they found has been pretty reliable. The panel discusses the value of referrals incentives programs. By hiring referrals they save money placing ads and going to fairs. Referrals tend to be more aware of the job they are going into and already have a friend to help them transition jobs and frameworks. Next, Travis walks through what it is like for a new hire at Podium. After onboarding, the new hire sits down with their team lead and codes, taking it all the way to production. The panel considers the advantages of new hires diving in, whether or not they know Elixir. It introduces them to the work they will be doing, gives them confidence by contributing to the team, and the one on one attention shows them the culture of unity at Podium. Podium has a lot to offers its developers. It has a team whose focus is internal developer experience. Podium maintains a focus on learning and growing in Elixir. They offer training for those who are unfamiliar with Elixir. Once per week, they do a Nerd Lunch, the company buys them all lunch while Podium engineers teach their fellows about software. Elixir 101 training also happens every week and is also taught by Podium engineers. Allowing Podium engineers to teach gives learners a chance to teach which in turn helps them learn. It also allows engineers to network outside their assigned teams. The panel considers how people-centered all the solutions are at Podium. The panel wonders if Podium ever uses outside trainers or services. Travis shares the wonderful experience they have been having by using Plataformatec’s Elixir Development subscription. He says it has been incredible to be able to jump on a call, talk to them and get some feedback. Using the subscriptions allows their senior developers to level up, while the other classes and lunches helps the junior developers to level up. Podium recently sponsored ElixirConf and send a big crowd to a few different conferences every year. Travis explains the value of the conference is not only in the education received by the engineers who get to go. At Podium, the engineers who go to the conferences then come back and present what they learned at the conference, sharing what they think Podium could apply to their stack. This makes the conferences valuable to the entire team. The last topic the panel discusses in the episode is the CI at Podium. The panel explains that most of the feedback for a new developer should be coming from the CI. Travis explains how the CI is set up. When he started they were using Github and has moved to Gitlab. They use credo checks, unit tests, sobelow, and dialyzer. The panel asks about Elixir formatter and how they check format in the CI. Travis explains what he likes about credo and gives tips for running it. The panel has Travis introduces sobelow and what it does for Podium. There are lots of people who hear of what’s going on with Amazon private label sales and think that they can’t get into it without a huge investment. But that’s not true, and this interview episode is proof. Today, Scott is chatting with Travis, a normal guy who calls himself an “average Joe.” Travis heard about private label sales on Amazon and decided he was going to make it work even though he didn’t have software to research his product ideas or a huge budget to do it. You’re going to be blown away by the success Travis has had simply by following some common sense steps. Getting the product idea first. Travis’ first private label product idea was a product that is a popular trend right now, so he wasn’t sure if he should go with it or not. But getting a good price on the product and the possibility of a good sized margin prompted him to take the leap. So with $1500 spent in products and fees Travis was able to get his first product onto Amazon. His story is an amazing one because his approach was truly a “bare bones” attempt and his hard work and risk taking has paid off. You can hear the exact steps Travis went through on this episode of The Amazing Seller. Playing with the price to get his product off the ground. When Travis first got his bare bones product onto the Amazon selling platform, his competition was pricing their products are around $15 each. He decided to go below that at $9.99 each. He wasn't sure what kind of effect that would have but went to sleep after posting his product consoling himself that he shouldn't expect much the first few days. He woke up to 5 sales of his product and he didn't even have any reviews on it yet. You can hear Travis’ amazing story as he shares it with Scott on this episode of The Amazing Seller. Pay per click right away and no reviews. One of the things Scott recommends to new sellers is to get their product onto the Amazon platform and then do a couple of giveaways to prompt reviews for the product. But Travis wanted to see what would happen if he didn't have any reviews but started with PPC right away. That's what he did, just using a broad search PPC campaign, and his sales began almost immediately. In his first month he sold over a thousand products and still has not secured any reviews for his product. He's hoping that organic reviews will happen soon, but also knows that he eventually needs to get a giveaway going to get his review started. Travis's gutsy approach is one you'll enjoy hearing about it, on this episode. Proof that private label sales can be done with a small budget and low amount of experience. Today's guest has never done Amazon private label sales before. He did not have a large bank row and had absolutely no experience sourcing or selling products online. The only education he had was listening to the episodes of this podcast. the results he's gotten are amazing. Within his first month Travis has well over $1,000 worth of sales and is already ordering more products to replenish the ones that have been sold. He expects to expand this product into multiple products, possibly variations of the same product, and even adding accessories to his product line. It's proof that Amazon private label sales is the real deal and anyone can do it. OUTLINE OF THIS EPISODE OF THE AMAZING SELLER [0:05] Scott’s introduction to the podcast!
