British director Gareth Edwards talks to Samira Ahmed about how his love of the films of Steven Spielberg inspired his new film Jurassic Park Rebirth, the latest chapter in the blockbuster dinosaur film franchise. Lena Dunham's latest series Too Much is a Rom-Com, inspired by her own life, moving to London and unexpectedly finding love with an indie musician, Luis Felber. The Oscar-winning film and TV composer Lalo Schifrin died recently. He wrote hundreds of theme tunes and scores including Bullit, Enter The Dragon, THX 1138 and Dirty Harry. Esta semana ha estado marcada por la llegada de la nueva Specialized Turbo Levo 4, una e-bike que era muy esperada y que ha generado muchos debates, opiniones encontradas y comparaciones más o menos afortunadas (sobre todo con el sistema DJI Avinox M1). En esta ocasión, en lugar de repasar las características técnicas (que están más que detalladas en el Primeras Pedaladas que hemos publicado en la web y el vídeo de nuestro canal de YouTube) hemos analizado ese debate y esas comparaciones para ver cuánto de justas y acertadas son y cómo es, realmente, la nueva Turbo Levo 4. También hablamos, rápidamente, de la Unno Mith, una de las primeras bicis que equipa, precisamente, el DJI Avinox M1; también de la llegada de la nueva Cannondale Moterra Carbon y Moterra Carbon LT, la renovación de un nombre mítico en el eMTB; y de la nueva Santa Cruz Bullit (estas últimas e-bikes apuestan por el BOSCH CX Gen 5) que hace una apuesta arriesgada por el e-enduro más manejable al montar la batería de 600 Wh (más range extender) y abandonar su mítico sistema de suspensión VPP por un four-bar. Por último, repasamos de forma más rápida las otras novedades que ha tenido la semana en forma de nuevos neumáticos de Continental (que suponen también el adiós a unos nombres míticos) de Good Year, de aros y bujes DT Swiss, Marzocchi... Este programa ha sido posible gracias a FOCUS, que recientemente ha presentado la SAM2, su e-bike de enduro y quizá algo más, ya que es una eMTB ideal para los amantes de las emociones fuertes y del DH con un cuadro robusto, mucho recorrido de suspensiones y el apoyo del BOSCH CX. Wilson hade svävat mellan liv och död i veckor och under isoleringen odlade han ett yvigt skägg, förmodligen för att dölja en delvis vänstersidig förlamning.En man som arbetat nära Wilson under fredsförhandlingarna var stjärndiplomaten och senare USA:s förste ambassadör i Sovjetunionen, William Bullit. Han med många andra kom att hysa enorm besvikelse och ren aversion mot USA:s 28:e president. Några år in på 20-talet drabbades Bullit av en personlig kris och sökte upp en viss professor i Wien, närmare bestämt Sigmund Freud. Efter några månader på Freuds divan började de båda männen samtala på mer vänskaplig grund. Det visade det sig att de var rörande överens i sin frustration över Wilson. Freud skrev i ett brev: “om någon enskild individ kan hållas ansvarig för misären i denna del av världen så är det nog ändå han [Wilson]”. När Bullit berättade om sina planer att skriva en psykologisk biografi över den tidigare presidenten var Freud oväntat och obegripligt nog med på noterna.Eller kanske var det inte så obegripligt. Som statsvetaren Patrick Weils visar i sin bok “The Madman in the Whitehouse” så var Bullit var ingen vanlig klient; han hade suttit i förhandlingar med Lenin och Stalin, Churchill, de Gaulle, Chiang Kai-shek och Göring. Bullit är förlagan till en av karaktärerna, närmare bestämt djävulsfiguren, i Michael Bulgakovs ”Mästaren och Margarita”. Freud var smickrad, dessutom befann hans psykoanalytiska bokförlag sig på ruinens brant och en psykobiografi över en president kunde säkert komma till undsättning, inte minst när Bullits första och enda roman hade varit en veritabel kioskvältare, tryckt i häpnadsväckande 23 upplagor.Något år senare, när Wilson avlidit, gav Freud Bullit i uppdrag att forska i Wilsons bakgrund och intervjua vänner och personer som arbetat med honom. Efter några år började ett manus ta form där båda männen stod som upphovsmän. Men utgivningen kom att dröja; Bullit var rädd att en kritisk biografi av demokraten Wilson skulle förstöra hans vidare karriärmöjligheter inom partiet. Och åren gick, Freud avled 1939, andra världskriget bröt ut; och så började Wilsons eftermäle påtagligt resa sig ur askan med nya biografier, pjäser och en påkostad spelfilm om hans liv 1944.Bullit satt på det enda exemplaret av manuset vars status blev alltmer oklart. Psykoanalytiker som Ernest Jones reste till USA och läste texten men var måttligt imponerad. Anna Freud fick läsa och ogillade skarpt. Manuset var fullt av psykoanalytiska klichéer, tyckte man, och saknade Freuds förfining. Ve och fasa, hade verkligen Freud själv författat denna parodi på freudianskt mumbo-jumbo!Men Bullit menade att de båda männen visst hade skrivit manuset tillsammans; Freud skrev själv utkastet till förordet, Bullit resterande delar. ”Vi kämpade ibland om varenda rad”, menade Bullit, även om han själv mestadels hållit i pennan. Men sedan hade Freud gjort ändringar, och Bullit hade sedan själv, långt efter Freuds död, ändrat i ändringarna.Men 1966 var det – äntligen eller kanske snarare tyvärr – dags för publicering; president Wilsons änka hade precis dött och Bullit själv låg för döden och fick aldrig läsa de nedslående recensionerna. Biografin uppehåller sig mycket vid vad Bullit och Freud menar är presidentens faderskomplex. Fadern var präst och Wilson hade sett sig som guds son, menade författarna; hans politiska karriär var ett slags messiansk dröm. Boken visar också upp flagranta exempel på vad psykoanalytikern och framgångsrike psykobiografikern Erik Homburger Erikson kallade ”originology”, alltså att låta pyttesmå detaljer i studieföremålets barndom förklara betydelsefulla historiska händelser.Men ännu värre, var inte Freuds och Bullits projekt problematiskt redan till sin utgångspunkt: att skriva en psykobiografi över någon som man djupt ogillar.Risken är ju – vilket boken om Wilson dessvärre är ett exempel på – att en persons lidande framhålls som klandervärt, och att man olyckligt tolkar en människas neuroser eller vanföreställningar som vore de moraliska brister. Idag argumenterar psykologiska och psykiatriska institutioner, exempelvis American Psychiatric Association, för att yrkeskårens kodex bör vara att en psykolog eller psykiater aldrig ska sätta en diagnos på en levande offentlig person man aldrig träffat. Ändå görs övertramp dagligen och samtidens behov av psykologiska studier, inte minst förklenande, över politiska ledare tycks outsinligt.Nå, historien är givetvis inte endast en produkt av idéer, ideologi och materiella förutsättningar utan också enskilda individers val och handlingar. I tider av maktkoncentration, personfixering och tilltagande demokratiskt underskott finns det kanske ett större behov än någonsin att förstå makthavares drivkrafter och omedvetna konflikter. In episode seven of our Manhunt series, we traverse a gritty and rebellious San Francisco in Bullitt (1968) alongside an oddly sleek and barren Paris in Le Samouraï (1967).Bullitt is famous for two reasons: Steve McQueen and the car chase. Like most famous films, its celluloid holds many more layers than its reputation claims. Bullitt was a leap forward for crime thrillers. Its naturalism, meticulousness, and postmodern plot made it a harbinger for the decades to come. There is no Chinatown without Bullit nor Heat. That alone makes it a remarkable and important film. The car chase is maybe the best ever put on screen, so that doesn't hurt it.On the other side of the Atlantic, Jean-Pierre Melville's Le Samouraï takes us into the calculated, Zen-like existence of a contract killer, played with masterful restraint by Alain Delon. Unlike the exposed id of Bullitt, Le Samouraï draws its power from a detached coolness, which deepens as the films reaches its crescendo. The film's manhunt is quietly relentless. The glitz and glamor of Paris and a life of crime are ruthlessly stripped away scene after scene until the isolated hero makes a final existential leap.

Can you think of an example from your life?Sometimes, it seems we're surrounded by idiots. And they're loud.  We worship confidence, arrogance, and status. Why are we surprised when the greedy become gluttonous?Why do we not honor traits like kindness, empathy, and connection? A lot of this is fear. We worry about what might happen if we interrupt, disagree, or speak our minds. The system is oppressive The system requires non-leaders to be complicit, to elect these leaders, and to value the characteristics that make them so bad at leading. These power differential relationships are not only common, but they also dominate. In one way, we are simply playing our role in the governance systems of human society. From another viewpoint, if we do not reject the undeservedly arrogant, we are complicit in their remaining in power. The good news is, that these authoritarians have no power if we can stop enabling.Taking the bone away from the pit bullIt makes perfect sense that the oppressors are drunk with power. We expect our oppressors to oppress. This power is just too much. Like heroin or iPhones, it is impossible to resist once you've had a taste. Once a person who values power, status, and money gains access to these things, it becomes a runaway train. The first step is taking away their power. But how do we do that?What are the alternatives?Our current societies are governed by the wrong values. We admire those who seek and master power, status, and money.  It is time we choose a more cooperative and less competitive approach. There are too few winners under our current competition models. What is voting if not a competition? A solution I propose frequently is simply not to elect anyone who wants to be in government.  To change anything, we must first take the bone away from the pit bull. Power is addictive and no one who has it is going to give it up willingly. Unfortunately, the system makes it nearly impossible for us enablers to do anything about it because we have no power. It isn't easy to leave an abusive relationship. It's a trap.  But we must take the power away. Ending the enabling slays the dragon. Help ourselves, help each otherThe first step is for those of us more fortunate to help ourselves. I preach about a practice that facilitates healing and includes journaling, therapy, meditation, mindfulness, and healthy living. These journeys are unique to each of us and, in my opinion, our responsibility. The next step is for those more able to help those less able. Some of us suffer less from oppression. The global north, for example, has gained all the benefits of using fossil fuels. This leg up can be used to help leverage smaller countries to build the necessary infrastructure to be able to care about things like government. Those of us not in abusive relationships can connect with centers designed to help abused spouses leave unhealthy relationships. We can help adults learn to read.  We help ourselves, then we can help each other. This nurtures connectivity and cooperation. It forms the foundation of a bottom-up takeover and redistribution of power.In my perfect world, all voices will be heard with equanimity. The one-dimensional, self-serving, obnoxious voices will be ignored by most rather than supported. We can get there by cooperating.It's the hardest thing we do because it is overthrowing the system designed to keep us complicit. This ain't gonna be easy.If you are enjoying this content, please tell your friends.

Una vieja disputa: ¿Son mejores las carreras de coches en los USA o en Europa? En este podcast vamos a analizar varias cosas, la primera, en qué consiste ser “mejores”. ¿igualdad? ¿Espectáculo? ¿sofisticación de los coches? ¿nivel de los pilotos? También vamos a analizar por qué son distintas y además, a hacer una dedicatoria muy especial. Y esta vez comenzamos por el final, por la dedicatoria. Pero que Rafael me ha emocionado y le quiero dedicar este vídeo. Rafael Corujo, venezolano, es socio del canal y me escribió un comentario donde me contaba que padecía una grave enfermedad y me decía: “Me consuelo y me distraigo con los vídeos de GH”. Y me pedía este vídeo. Así que quiero dedicar este video a él y a todos los garajistas que por una causa u otra, estén pasando un mal momento. En los albores de la automoción, muy a finales del S.XIX y comienzos del XX no había Internet ni TV, ni la radio era popular ni había revistas de grandes tiradas… solo periódicos. Pero los periódicos eran influyentes. Para hacerse publicidad las marcas, para demostrar que sus productos eran mejores que los de su competencia las carreras eran un buen reclamo. Pero a partir de este nacimiento digamos que “común”, las formas de entender la competición se separan. Y en esto tiene mucho que ver una frase que me encanta y que me oí por primera vez a mi amigo Luis Alberto Izquierdo, por cierto que sigue haciendo el consultorio online, que decía: “En Europa los automóviles fueron antes que las carreteras, en los USA fueron las carreteras antes que los coches”… En Europa se inventaron los coches, pero no había carreteras, sino caminos en muchos casos estrechos y sinuosos, porque gran parte de Europa es bastante montañosa… Bueno, Alemania es en general plana como un plato, por eso las grandes carreras nacieron en Francia. No es una casualidad que hoy día tres de las carreras más importantes del mundo se lleven a cabo en Francia: Las 24 Horas de Le Mans, el GP de Mónaco y el Rally Montecarlo, porque a estos efectos, el principado no deja de ser Francia. Se comenzó por cortar el tráfico en los días y horas de las carreras para finalmente esas carreteras de montaña convertirlas en circuitos, como es el caso de Le Mans, que una parte del circuito siguen siendo carreteras cerradas al público para la ocasión, o trazados tan famosos con Spa-Francorchamps o Nürburgring. Luego muchos circuitos nacieron inspirados en estos… En este vídeo en realidad nos referimos al automovilismo “Estilo Europeo” de la mayoría de los Campeonatos del Mundo oficiales, pues es el que se ha extendido más gracias a la FIA… En los USA, por su extensión, orografía y nivel económico no es que hubiese carreteras, pero sí había caminos mejor conservados y sobre todo una red muy amplia que contribuyó al desarrollo muy rápido del automóvil. En gran parte la sociedad americana, incluso el urbanismo de sus ciudades, se hizo pensado en los coches. Era una sociedad que no voy a decir que fuese mejor o peor, pero sí más moderna. Y el automóvil desde el principio fue más popular. Mientras que en Europa los conductores eran profesionales o bien los famosos “Chauffeur”, en los USA la mayor parte de los usuarios del Ford T, el coche que motorizo a América, eran granjeros, ganaderos, empresarios y personas de clase media o media-alta. Aún hoy en los USA tener permiso de conducir es casi un derecho y es más sencillo y barato que en Europa y se puede obtener mucho antes. En resumen: Buenas carreteras en su mayoría rectas, coches que ya eran rápidos y conductores poco preparados… o sea, el caldo de cultivo para los accidentes. No fue en los USA donde se implantaron los límites de velocidad, pero sí el país pionero en ligar la velocidad a los accidentes, son límites muy severos ya a partir de los años 60 y 70. Estas limitaciones produjeron un efecto rebote, un enorme culto a la velocidad. Y eso dio lugar a un tipo de competición muy distinto al Europeo. Con sus potentes coches, no muy eficaces en curva, los “piques” de los ciudadanos americanos eran de semáforo a semáforo. Y las carreras “de verdad” se hacían en circuitos ovales muy peraltados que tenían dos ventajas: Los coches podían alcanzar grandes velocidades y los espectadores podían ver el circuito completo… sobre esto volveremos. El ejemplo paradigmático de esto que te cuento es el Indianápolis Motor Speedway, sede de las famosas 500 Millas, la carrera con más afluencia de público del Mundo, sobre esto también volveremos, y que se inauguró en 1909. En Europa la competición era sobre todo un escaparate tecnológico donde las marcas podían mostrar sus avances y logros. En USA las carreras eran y son sobre todo espectáculo… Las carreras americanas en ovales cuentan con unos reglamentos igualan mucho a los coches incluso en la Fórmula Indy el chasis es único y solo hay dos motores distintos. Nada que ver con nuestra “tecnología” en F1. Y luego están los “Safety Car”. Cierto que en los circuitos ovales, sin escapatorias, cada toque hace que los coches se queden en mitad de la pista… pero también es cierto que los comisarios americanos están como locos por sacar un Safety y agrupar toda la carrera. Y no olvidemos a los dragster que “replican” en competiciones serias los “piques” entre semáforos, con un montón de categorías que abarcan desde coches casi de serie a prototipos de miles de caballos que sobrepasan los 400 km/h en solo 400 m saliendo de parado. ¡Esto sí que es intensidad! Resumiendo: Las carreras Europeas son menos emocionantes pero sus coches más sofisticados y los circuitos más retorcidos… si vas allí, solo ves “tu” curva, igual que en los rallyes. En las carreras americanas los coches son sencillos, generalmente los circuitos son ovales, las diferencias mínimas, puedes ver la carrera íntegra desde el propio circuito y comer hamburguesas… Pero no hemos hablado de los pilotos. Y vamos a hablar poco, porque está claro que los pilotos de las carreras “estilo europeo” de la mayoría de los mundiales, tienen pilotos de mayor nivel. Es un tópico, pero los pilotos de F1 que van a la Indy triunfan y en el camino inverso… no es así. ¿Os acordáis de Nigel Mansell? Tras ganar el Mundial de F1 en 1992 se enfadó con su equipo y se fue a “hacer las américas” en el seno del equipo Newman-Hass. Lo haré corto: A pesar de que muchos dijeron que Nigel no se adaptaría a los circuitos ovales, ganó el Mundial a la primera. Conclusión: Para mí las carreras tal y como nacieron en Europa me gustan más pero creo que tenemos mucho que aprender de la forma de ver las carreras los norteamericanos… y, por supuesto, también al revés.
