In this episode, Phil Treadwell talks with Michael Brennan about redefining leadership and making intentional impact. Michael emphasizes that leadership is a verb, not a noun; it's about taking action, not holding a title. He encourages listeners to "lead up" regardless of their role and to say yes to opportunities that create growth. They discuss how consistency builds trust over time and how small actions, like a thoughtful text, can make a big difference. Michael Brennan is the president of Nationwide Mortgage Bankers (NMB), overseeing sales and operations across 47 states. He leads the NMB Affinity Platform, a financial wellness initiative built on strategic partnerships. Previously, he was president of Movement Mortgage, where he helped grow the company to 5,600 employees and $33 billion in annual volume. Michael is also active in philanthropy, supporting global nonprofits and serving as a key partner in John Maxwell's EQUIP Foundation. 01:30 Meet Michael 06:20 It's Not How It's Always Been 10:15 Lead Up 13:20 Leadership is a Verb 16:55 Never Say No 22:05 Consistency Compounds 24:50 Part of the Impact 32:20 Send That Text Connect with Michael: Website | LinkedIn BE IN THE ROOM WHERE GROWTH HAPPENS: M1A Mastermind Group If you are enjoying the MME podcast, please take a second and LEAVE US A REVIEW. For more than 20 years, Lucian Kim covered Russia and Ukraine as a journalist. Now, the former NPR reporter is out with a new book that aims to explain the confluence of personal and geopolitical motivations that led to Russia's 2022 full-scale invasion of Ukraine. Putin's Revenge identifies key moments in the decades leading up to the invasion, including the 2004 Orange Revolution, George W. Bush's support of NATO membership for Ukraine, and Russia's 2014 seizure of Crimea. In today's episode, Kim talks with Here & Now's Robin Young about several turning points in the conflict, the evolution of Putin's position towards the West and Ukraine, and why Kim was initially drawn to cover Russia as a story of a collapsed empire. To listen to Book of the Day sponsor-free and support NPR's book coverage, sign up for Book of the Day+ at plus.npr.org/bookofthedayLearn more about sponsor message choices: podcastchoices.com/adchoicesNPR Privacy Policy

But what happens in the crucial days leading up to the conclave as candidates start to emerge. FRANCIS CAMPBELL is vice chancellor of Notre Dame University in Australia. In this episode of the Tactical Living Podcast, hosts Coach Ashlie Walton and Sergeant Clint Walton explore an essential skill for first responders: learning how to lead up (Amazon Affiliate). Leadership isn't just about rank—it's about influence. Many officers, firefighters, and EMS professionals have valuable insights and ideas but struggle to communicate them effectively to their superiors. You'll learn how to influence leadership without a formal title, ensuring your voice is heard and respected. This episode offers five practical strategies to help you navigate leadership dynamics, communicate effectively, and create positive change within your department. What It Means to "Lead Up": Understand how leadership isn't just about command presence—it's about guiding decisions, offering solutions, and fostering teamwork at every level. Five Strategies to Influence Leadership Without a Title: 1. Master the Art of Respectful Communication: Example: Instead of complaining about a department policy, present a well-researched alternative that benefits both leadership and the team. Why It's Beneficial: Shows initiative and professionalism while making it easier for leadership to take your ideas seriously. 2. Build Credibility Through Your Actions: Example: Be the officer who's always prepared, reliable, and solution-oriented—someone others look to for guidance. Why It's Beneficial: Leaders are more likely to listen to those who consistently demonstrate competence and responsibility. 3. Present Problems with Solutions: Example: If there's an issue with outdated equipment, research funding opportunities or grants before bringing the concern to leadership. Why It's Beneficial: Leaders appreciate proactive individuals who don't just highlight problems but also offer actionable solutions. 4. Develop Strong Relationships with Peers and Leaders: Example: Engage in discussions with leadership outside of official meetings, showing interest in department goals and initiatives. Why It's Beneficial: Building rapport creates trust, making it easier for leadership to consider your input seriously. 5. Be Adaptable and Open to Feedback: Example: If a superior challenges your idea, ask follow-up questions to understand their perspective rather than getting defensive. Why It's Beneficial: Demonstrates maturity, willingness to learn, and an ability to refine ideas based on constructive feedback. How Leading Up Improves Department Morale and Operations: Learn why effective leadership at all levels creates a stronger, more cohesive team. Why First Responders Should Take Ownership, Regardless of Rank: Explore how personal responsibility and initiative contribute to career growth and department-wide improvement. The Long-Term Benefits of Leading Up in Your Career: Understand how influencing leadership today can open doors for future promotions, assignments, and opportunities. Why This Matters: First responders don't need a title to make a difference. By mastering communication, offering solutions, and building credibility, you can influence leadership and contribute to meaningful change within your department. In this episode of The Responsive Lab, Stephen Boudreau and Carly Berna are joined by industry leader, Trent Dunham, for an exciting conversation about the world of modern fundraising and how to become effective leaders in an ever-changing nonprofit landscape. Trent begins by dissecting some of the large-scale (or macro) trends in fundraising today, and lists some of the struggles that nonprofits may be facing in our current economic climate, highlighting some tools that they can utilize to overcome these challenges – such as AI technology and automation. Trent goes on to talk about what it means to properly define ‘success' and how to prioritize your organization's goals in order to achieve that success, emphasizing how leadership plays an important role in both prioritization and execution in an organization. Later, Trent talks about what it means to ‘Lead Up' as a means of furthering your organization's growth ability to push through obstacles. Other Topics Include: – How communicating priorities effectively provides clarity for accountability – How to strategically execute a plan that has been prioritized effectively – How to use technology in order to scale your organization – How providing solutions to problems rather than listing the problems themselves can help steer your organization in the right direction – A mystery question at the end! Send us a textThe first stop of the primary season is in Iowa. It is an important stop on the pathway to the Presidential Nomination in both parties. In 1992, President George H. W. Bush was way out in front and his challenger, Pat Buchanan, decided not to contest him in Iowa, and on the Democratic side Iowa Senator Tom Harkin was running and therefore the Democrats decided not to invest to much energy there either. But we are going to start there in Iowa. Then move you over to New Hampshire where at this point in the campaign both front runners are hemorrhaging badly to their challengers. Bill Clinton gets bogged down in two personal scandals, one concerning infidelity and an Arkansas lounge singer named Gennifer Flowers, and the other one about his attempt to dodge the draft and steer clear of the Vietnam War. The result of both of these scandals is Clinton drops from a clear frontrunner to battling to stay alive with Tom Harkin and Bob Kerry on his heels. He will spend this week trying to stop the bleeding, and as we shall see on election night, he does. Then President Bush is in a tug of war with television commentator Pat Buchanan. Buchanan wants to put "America First", to stop getting into trade deals, and stop providing foreign aid. His main theme is that the elite, personified by George Bush, don't care about you, and make decisions to the detriment of the working class. He wants to "Make America First Again", sound familiar. That message is resonating in a New Hampshire then in the throws of a tough recession. In this episode, we will stop off in Iowa and then venture over to New Hampshire and the eve of the hard fought New Hampshire Primary and in both primary races they will serve up some surprises. Retailers are facing a tough equation as they head into the all-important holiday shopping season — this time over DEI initiatives. Companies are bracing for blowback related to policies around diversity, equity and inclusion and are hoping to avoid alienating customers who may deem the brands too woke – or not woke enough. Some are tapping outside advisors for advice on how to avoid criticism, while others are opting out of public events on the topic as backlash against equity and inclusion programs grows in the lead-up to the 2024 presidential election. CNBC spoke with a number of retail industry insiders, strategists and staffers who spoke on the condition of anonymity to do so candidly.

[SEGMENT 1-1] Election Runup 1 Where was all that enthusiasm for Harris we were told about? Colonial Metals Group [X] SB – Benny Johnson Thousands at her rallies. The Left attempted to tell us that Trump rallies were empty. I will discuss blatant lies more in just a bit. And as you already know, there were MANY. We were told that Harris didn't hire anybody, but then I see all the buses… [SEGMENT 1-2] Election Runup 2 [X] SB – Early voting update in PA 700k less than where they were in 2020 350K less than 2022 NC: Trump up over 50% Early voting, Republicans ahead in NC. Never happened Black turnout is WAY down. Same in Pittsburg and Philly 25-30% of those are voting for Trump. [SEGMENT 1-3] Election Runup 3 [X] SB – Andrea Mitchell blames misogyny for Harris loss Make it look respectable. Sponsors That's all the cabal can do at this point, because NOBODY believes Harris can beat Trump. Recap of Trump's history with Democrats You have known for months that Trump can't be beaten. Democrats dumped Biden partially because of Biden, but mostly because the public figured out that they couldn't lie Biden into office again. Nobody believes Biden beat Trump, but they sold that lie. HUGE MISTAKE. Democrats thought by defeating Trump in 2020 he would go away. But he's FAR MORE DANGEROUS today. Notice, they never tried to assassinate him while he was running or even when he served. They did mini-lawfare, and ultimately took him out in the bloodless coup. RFK Jr, Elon Musk, Tulsi Gabbard… Not dumb people. Trump signs being hidden. But this time is different. You FEEL it, and haven't wanted to jinx it. But if you KNEW that elections were fair, you would have thrown victory parties, and not watch parties. Superstitious, skeptical, burnt by the past, you refused to trust your gut. SERIES 3 EPISODE 3: COUNTDOWN WITH KEITH OLBERMANN A-Block (1:44) SPECIAL COMMENT: The selection of Kamala Harris's Vice President is a big story and I'm really interested and it could be Joe Biden and I'd go "Whatever You Want, Queen." The lead story today is ANOTHER poll explosion She's ahead in the Morning Consult poll 48-44. A week ago she was ahead by ONE point. Two weeks ago TRUMP was ahead by TWO points. That's a seven point swing since President Biden bowed out. They polled on six key attributes in seven swing states: she wins not too old in a landslide. She wins "mentally fit" in a landslide. She wins "less dangerous" in a landslide. She wins "cares about me" by as much as ten. She's tied with him on "more presidential." She's up. by three in SurveyUSA. CBS (which never had Biden ahead) has her up by one. Decision Desk HQ shows her improved in nine of its ten battleground states (the only one she didn't improve on? Virginia, where she and Biden were each up by three). For the first time even Nate Silver's projection says she has the better chance of winning the electoral college – 53% – and winning it by 282 votes to 255 for Trump – and has her up in the polls by one and nine tenths points, largely because HIS average of the polls in Pennsylvania has her up by a point and in Michigan by just under three. Nate Silver has Kamala Harris within six points of leading in… Florida. ALSO THERE'S THE VP THING. Reuters reported Tim Walz and Josh Shapiro are the finalists. It might be Mark Kelly in the mix, too. Sure great fine get Walz new younger glasses. End advice. AND NOW WE KNOW WHY RFK MADE THE BEAR VIDEO: Yes, sometimes you eat the bear and sometimes the bear eats you and sometimes when you try to get ahead of The New Yorker story about you dumping in Central Park the dead carcass of a bear cub you say another motorist killed, it turns out there were stories the bear had stab wounds, and oh yeah the magazine has a PHOTO of you mocking the dead bear and in it your fly is unzipped. B-Block (29:45) THE WORST PERSONS IN THE WORLD: TWO Supreme Court Justices. Gorsuch threatens Biden. Thomas takes more trip courtesy Harlan Crow Travel Agency. Elon Musk warns of civil war in Europe - for at least the fifth time in ten months. Does he own a civil war distributorship or something? C-Block (38:30) THINGS I PROMISED NOT TO TELL: The anniversary looms: my greatest scoop proves you can accomplish great things by doing nothing and just letting everybody else do all the work for you. I broke the trade of Wayne Gretzky to the L-A Kings – as important a moment as there has been in the history of the development of hockey in this country – by just answering the phone a couple times. I mean I didn't even have to leave my office. The Gretzky Trade And My Absolutely Unnecessary Role in Breaking It.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
