POPULARITY
Have you ever felt alone in seeing a problem? That feeling, a little bit like the story of the Emperor's new clothes, where everyone else is applauding – but there's an important truth that no one seems willing to speak. That's how my guest today felt, from a very young age, about one of the most influential ideas on the planet. That one idea is capitalism. According to the dictionary… Capitalism is defined as “an economic and political system in which a country's trade and industry are controlled by private owners for profit” Since the birth of the capitalism, approximately 200 years ago, the world's population living in ‘extreme poverty' has dropped from 94% to 9.6%. Yet, what also comes with that idea – the flip side to the capitalist coin – has been argued to be unchecked greed and the treatment of people and the planet as ‘assets' to be bought and then discarded. To put it lightly – it's a pretty powerful idea. Ray Sisodia was a young man growing up in India when he first came across the impact of capitalism - and to the conclusion that there had to be a better way of doing business than just surviving to chase money. THAT idea is Conscious Capitalism. Today's Guest Raj Sisodia is a founding member of the worldwide Conscious Capitalism movement, FW Olin Distinguished Professor of Global Business and Whole Foods Market Research Scholar in Conscious Capitalism at Babson College. He has written eleven award-winning books, including Firms of Endearment, the New York Times and Wall Street Journal best-seller Conscious Capitalism, Everybody Matters and his latest book ‘The Healing Organization: Awakening the Conscience of Business to Help Save the World'. LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/rajendrasisodia/Twitter: @RajSisodiaCC You'll LearnThe role of the Healing Leader post-COVIDWhy part of moving forward consciously involves firstly going backwards. Why capitalism can still be the greatest idea we've ever had and what needs to change in order to move forward.Raj's own journey of influence, what he's learned about creating and sustaining a global movement. On a personal note, this conversation honestly went NOWHERE I expected. I arrived with two pages of questions about the future of capitalism and left with a deep appreciation for the humility, grace, and courage of Raj himself. You know, in any journey of influence you are going to face your words head-on. If you teach patience, you will hit the places where you have none. If you teach courage, you'll find those moments when yours disappears. If you talk about healing organisations, eventually you'll need to face a healing journey of your own. Raj is a human being that has had the courage to do both. The courage to drive the new ideas and stories that move the world forward and the courage to re-examine the old ideas and stories holding him back. That's real influence. Thanks for tuning into this week's episode of the Inside Influence Podcast! If the information has helped you please subscribe to the show, and leave a review. After studying marketing and leadership strategies in corporations across the world, Raj Sisodia learned this truth: you don’t have to suffer in order to be successful. In fact, there is a way to be both wildly profitable and inexpressibly happy — and, according to Raj, the first step to achieving this is to become a conscious leader in all aspects of your life. So, how can you take concrete steps towards embracing awareness and selflessness as a leader today? In this episode of Next Wave Leadership, Raj Sisodia, the Co-founder and Co-chairman of Conscious Capitalism, sits down with Dov Pollack to talk about reforming business culture by embracing conscious capitalism. Listen in as Raj shares his journey towards the Conscious Capitalism movement, the problems with — and potential solutions to — American marketing strategies, and how Raj’s book, The Healing Organization, propelled his own path towards healing and growth. Rajendra Sisodia is an author, and the cofounder and co-Chairman of Conscious Capitalism Inc. He is also the FW Olin Distinguished Professor of Global Business, and Whole Foods Market Research Scholar in Conscious Capitalism at Babson College. His latest book, The Healing Organization: Awakening the Conscience of Business to Help Save the World, explores the idea of business as healing. He joins Kevin Monroe to discuss his book, and how its principles apply to organizations around the world. Epidemic of Silent Suffering Raj claims that the current crisis has only exacerbated underlying problems within the workplace and society: it has “made explicit what was already quite implicit and under the surface.” The faults in our systems have always been the unseen part of the iceberg. He shares statistics concerning stress-related deaths, overworking and disengagement, stating that it is evidence of an epidemic of silent suffering. Vulnerability has always defined us as human beings, he comments, but now it unites us. He and Kevin discuss their personal response to the current crisis. Raj says that he has been thinking about how he can serve. The Healing Organization A healing organization recognizes the role of business in the world. Raj believes human beings are put here to take care of each other. If you start a business, you could touch the lives of potentially thousands of people. Businesses which have the mindset of serving others and meeting their real needs are places of healing for those who work there. Employees leave work at the end of the day feeling better off than when they came in. They can also be a source of healing for customers and communities, as they provide goods and services that make a positive difference in their lives, rather than simply feeding their desires and addictions. Capitalism, Raj says, is the way in which we can cooperate with each other to achieve things we cannot do by ourselves, and come together with a shared purpose and shared values. Healing Leaders Unexpressed human caring is the most abundant underutilized resource in the world. Human beings have a need and desire to care: it brings fulfilment to our lives. If we can connect silent suffering and unexpressed human caring, we would have the opportunity for healing to take place, for both the receiver of care and the caregiver. Leaders must model the vulnerability and the willingness to express their needs. Kevin asks what differentiates regular leaders from leaders of healing organizations. Raj replies that leaders of healing organizations have a more expanded view of leadership; they recognize that leadership is the stewardship of the lives entrusted to them, and that the way they lead impacts the way people live. Leaders, however, cannot be healing leaders if they haven’t yet healed themselves. Kevin inquires whether every business can become a healing organization. Every saint has a past and every sinner has a future, Raj quotes. The Right Thing to Do Organizations shouldn’t decide to do the right thing purely because it may be good for business. Leaders must believe that taking care of people is the right thing to do in order to do it for the right reasons. The notion that the wellbeing of people is only an instrument which contributes to profits has to change. The business of business is people. True business creates value. This week’s distinguished guest is Raj Sisodia, Conscious Capitalism thought leader, international speaker, and bestselling author. Raj is the F.W. Olin Distinguished Professor of Global Business and Whole Foods Market Research Scholar in Conscious Capitalism at Babson College. He has co-authored a new book with organizational innovation expert Michael J Gelb, entitled The Healing Organization: Awakening The Conscience Of Business To Help Save The World. Raj chats with Marcel Schwantes about how for-profit businesses can become agents of healing for their employees, customers and communities. The word healing comes from two root words: wholeness and holy. Healing, therefore, is about reducing suffering, elevating joy and promoting healthy growth. [4:27] Work, as it’s traditionally viewed, has a high human cost. Raj is on a mission to show that we don’t have to kill people to make money. In fact, when our employees are happy and thriving, our businesses will prosper. [ 6:15] An example of a healing organization in Raj’s book is Greyston Bakery. Its founder Bernie Glassman started the bakery to “give people a first chance.” Their model is that they don’t hire people to bake brownies, they bake brownies to hire people. This open hiring policy has transformed the lives of countless people. [10:29] Raj says that we were put on this planet to care for one another. It’s what gives us the deepest satisfaction and happiness; it helps us heal. Business gives us the opportunity to care for each other at scale. [15:02] “Unexpressed love is the greatest untapped resource on this planet,” says Raj. [17:50] We should allow people to express love and be vulnerable about their challenges, Raj advises. Leaders modeling this make their employees comfortable to do the same. Suffering would then be replaced with joy and healing. [18:38] Strength, courage, focus, resilience, and discipline are desirable masculine qualities but they should be counterbalanced by feminine traits. “Out of balance masculine traits have caused a lot of devastation in the world,” Raj comments. We should be both tough-minded and tender-hearted, as Martin Luther King Jr said. [24:53] Raj says that the ultimate message of his book is to invite leaders to heal themselves. [26:00] It’s deeply ingrained in our culture to consider anything feminine as being weak. However, there is a strong correlation between so-called ‘feminine qualities’ and the traits of great leaders. When we elevate the feminine we will see many of our challenges go away. [28:05] Marcel asks if any for-profit company can become a healing organization. Raj says that they can by selling to their customers in a way that serves their wellbeing. Internally, a healing organization’s purpose should be to improve the lives of their own people, their families, and the community. [31:21] Raj talks about how his mentor Bob Chapman transformed over 100 businesses through his mission to touch the lives of as many people as possible. He says that when Bob Chapman shows up to invest in your business, you know there’s hope and a future for your company. Raj describes Bob’s work as a healing ministry. [32:33] Raj explains why he believes leaders still lead through fear. [40:09] Marcel and Raj discuss NKC, who says that: “Leaders driven by love will bring sustainability and healing to the business as well as for themselves.” [44:20] Healing organizations lead with love, innocence, simplicity, and truth. [46:12] A healing organization helps its customers engage in meaningful consumption. [48:04] Raj wants you to think about your own need for healing. “You are your most important stakeholder,” he says. Heal yourself and then bring that into the world. [50:15]
