Dear Listeners,It has been ten years since that calamity. Though you survived, the memory of flame-scorched rubble haunts your dreams each night. Closure slips away from you in the vagaries of time and, a decade on, you settle back into a relatively peaceful daily routine. It would be truly terrible if you were to die multiple times in one night through no fault of your own. It would really suck if you got pulled into a death game that had an unnerving connection to the most traumatic moment of your childhood. If something that awful happened you'd probably at least want some kind of good fortune to balance it all out. Maybe getting to know a cool knight with a sick sword or something. Yeah, a cool sword could make this all alright. This week we begin our four episode series on Fate/Stay Night, a tremendously popular and influential Visual Novel from Type-Moon and the first main entry into the vast and sprawling Fate series. Sara and Runa are joined by friend, fellow podcaster, and Fate enjoyer MK as the three of them begin unpacking the massive warehouse of material that is Fate/Stay Night (2004). Reading along in the recent remaster (2024) which is based on Fate/Stay Night's Realta Nua release (2007), this episode focuses on the Fate route which is the standard first route players experience when booting up the game. In this route, we initially follow the prologue and Rin Tohsaka, a highschooler and mage who summons a Heroic Spirit, a Servant who occupies a special Class and will be her chess piece within the Holy Grail War. After a few hours with Rin though, we shift to our protagonist's perspective: Shirou Emiya is a fairly normal high school boy apart from how he was the sole survivor of a catastrophic fire 10 years ago, and the fact that he, too, is a mage. He can only use reinforcement or strengthening magic though, which he employs to repair broken space heaters and the like for his school. One night while Shirou is at school after dark, however, he's cornered by a man in blue spandex with a giant red spear who kills him dead. It's alright, Shirou gets better - unfortunately his assailant follows him to his home where Shirou staggers backwards and accidentally summons a Servant, Saber. Looking up at this majestic woman clad in a knight's silver armor in the moonlight, Shirou enters the Holy Grail War without fully understanding how, why, or what he's supposed to do in this situation. The Fate Route of Fate/Stay Night focuses on establishing the core ideas of the game and its world, particularly surrounding Servants, Mages, and the Holy Grail War. A real, powerful magical artifact manifests within Fuyuki City and provides the power to summon Heroic Spirits of past Kings, Champions, Gods, Demons, or even Fictional characters from the past, present, or even future. These Heroic Spirits conceal their identity and use the moniker of their summoned Class as a pseudonym - Saber, Archer, Lancer, Rider, Caster, Assassin, and Berserker. Only a Servant may touch the Holy Grail, and only one Master & Servant pair may use its power to grant their deepest wish. In the Fate Route, we also see the game's first romance play out between Shirou and Saber with mixed results. In spite of its shortcomings, Fate introduces a wealth of information and details which we'll be carrying forward into our next episodes on the remaining routes of the game. Leslie Pagel is the Chief Evangelist of Authenticx - a conversation analytics company dedicated to improving the way healthcare companies engage with patients. In this role, she creates awareness across the healthcare industry of more efficient and effective ways for healthcare organizations to deliver on their customer objectives. With over two decades of working with customer experience teams, Leslie helps clients actualize the voice of the patient to show how these voices prompt meaningful action. Questions • We always like to start off by asking our guests to share a little bit about their journey. Could you share with our audience a little bit about how you got to where you are today? • What has your experience been I would say, let's use maybe the last 12 to 24 months, as it relates to what customers are expecting. You mentioned conversational AI as a way to do the data collection and less reliance on surveys. But what have the customers been saying? What are some of the trends that you've been seeing emerging? What are customers really looking for? • So, in terms of using conversational AI to be a better listening tool with customers, right? Could you share maybe an example, a real-life example for our listeners, that you've seen the conversational AI work in such an impactful way that it transformed somebody's life or group of people's lives? • What's the one online resource, tool, website or app that you absolutely can't live without in your business? • Could you also share with us one or two books that have had a great impact on you? It could be a book that you read a very long time ago, or even one that you've read recently. • Can you also share with our listeners, what's the one thing that's going on in your life right now that you are really excited about? Either something you're working on to develop yourself or your people. • Where can listeners find you online? • Before we wrap our interviews up, we always like to ask our guests, do you have a quote or a saying that during times of adversity or challenge, you will tend to revert to this quote if for any reason you get derailed or you get off track, it kind of helps to get you back on track. Do you have one of those? Highlights Leslie's Journey Leslie shared that her journey in customer experience started over 25 years ago before CX in customer experience was even a thing. She spent 20 years working with large global, primarily business to business organizations on a new strategy for creating competitive differentiation. And that strategy was the customer experience. And over the past several decades companies have grown to create a boardroom conversation around customer experience, because it is a very productive and effective differentiation strategy. What we see over the over the decades is the pace of innovation has continued to accelerate, which makes it really hard for companies to compete on product alone or services alone and no one wants to compete on price, so companies were looking for new ways of differentiating in the market and they turn to customer experience. And so, she spent 20 years, the first 20 years of her career working with companies on their customer experience strategy, which largely was informed from traditional or historical methods of customer listening through large survey programmes, Net Promoter Score programmes, customer satisfaction programmes. And as technology has evolved and artificial intelligence has become more mainstream, we're seeing a new method that companies are leveraging for listening to their customers, which then informs their customer experience strategy and that's conversational AI. So, when you take a historical look at customer experience listening or measurement, you see that the way that we capture customer input has changed, but what we capture and listen to hasn't, we're still very survey dependent. And in the last two years, she's been really focusing on helping business leaders realize a different source of customer insight and that source is not survey data, that source are the conversations that customers are having every day with businesses when they've reached out to ask questions, when they reach out to make purchases, when they reach out to use the website, customers are interacting in moments. And companies have an opportunity to listen into those moments and the technology exists. So, spent her entire career in customer experience is evolved more into a role today of helping leaders really listen to the moments of customer interactions instead of relying on survey data to keep their finger on the pulse of their customers. Using Conversational AI for Data Collection – What Are Customers Really Looking For? Me: So, you have quite a wealth of experience in that area. Now you're primarily in the healthcare space, right? Leslie stated that she is now, prior to working with Authenticx, she worked across industries, primarily focused on B2B. But then have over the past 5 years been really focused within the healthcare industry, working with payers, providers, being doctors, and pharmaceutical, manufacturers, pharmacies, and in that realm of healthcare. Me: What has your experience been I would say, let's use maybe the last 12 to 24 months, as it relates to what customers are expecting. You mentioned conversational AI as a way to do the data collection and less reliance on surveys. But what have the customers been saying? What are some of the trends that you've been seeing emerging? What are customers really looking for? Leslie shared that she would say, and this hasn't changed over the past 12 to 15 months, they've been saying this for decades. But customers, they are saying to the organizations that they do business with that one of the best ways of demonstrating care and concern for the customer. And by the way, in healthcare, caring and concern is essential in that customer experience. But customers have been saying that the best way to show me that you care about me is to listen to me, and to show me that you're listening to me by hearing what I'm saying and taking ownership of it and driving action in the business. So that's nothing new, that's been there for decades. The other thing that's not unique to healthcare, you can see it in any business is eliminating friction from the journey. But in healthcare, friction in the journey means a lot more, it means delayed care, it means not getting access to the care that you need. So, really looking at pockets where there is friction, and that friction is impacting the patient in their ability to get the care that we need. And that also impacts business and business outcomes as well. Me: Indeed, because at the end of the day, you're trying to build trust and loyalty and a higher level of retention. And if you're not getting what you're looking for, then they're probably not going to come back, especially if they have options. Leslie agreed exactly. And there are a lot of options out there, that's kind of why leaders turn to the customer experience to differentiate as companies are innovating fast, your product doesn't stand alone anymore. And so, they are looking towards other ways of building loyalty and the experiences is the way that is where they're turning. The Impact of Using Conversational IA Me: So, in terms of using conversational AI to be a better listening tool with customers, right? Could you share maybe an example, a real-life example for our listeners, that you've seen the conversational AI work in such an impactful way that it transformed somebody's life or group of people's lives? Leslie stated that the example that comes to mind immediately is they are working with a hospital system, and this isn't unique to hospitals across healthcare, there's a lot of focus on social determinants of health because social determinants research has found that social determinants have more of an impact on our health and wellness than healthcare itself. And so, there's a lot of focus across healthcare organizations on understanding social determinants of health and helping patients overcome those. And so, they do work with a hospital system and one of the questions that they asked them to explore in their conversational data was related to scheduling and why are there no shows? Or why are there reschedules? And one of the things that they found in studying just a single topic of scheduling appointments was that social determinants of health in 14% of those interactions were having an impact on getting to care, getting to the care that they need, they were impacting, rescheduling or missed appointments, as well. So, this hospital system through that learning, one, has a different appreciation and understanding when someone is calling in to reschedule, that it might not necessarily be because they're not feeling good, it could be because their caregiver didn't show up and they can't get to the appointment, or they're working three jobs and they're not able to get time off. So, through that insight, they have been working with their frontline staff to one, help in those interactions when someone is calling around a scheduling appointment or rescheduling to offer services that might help that patient in need. But they're also taking their insights that they've learned to the broader community perspective as well. Me: All right, so that's data driven decisions there for sure that would help them to enhance the journey of the customer. Leslie agreed, absolutely. App, Website or Tool that Leslie Absolutely Can't Live Without in Her Business When asked about an online resource that she cannot live without in her business, Leslie stated that there's so many tools and resources that she uses every day. She would say for the work that she does at Authenticx, which one of the things that she does is to take the bird's eye view of all of the healthcare landscape and all of the conversations that are coming through their platform and listen more at an industry level and macro level. And she relies on their own software to enable that perspective. So, that's one of the things that she wouldn't be able to do her job if she didn't have Authenticx because it's allowing her to listen at scale. This year, they'll have over 200 million healthcare conversations coming in through their platform, yes, 200 million. And there's no way they would be able to understand that data at scale, a human can't do that at scale. And so, she relies personally on their platform to allow herself and their team to do the research that they do to help the healthcare industry at a macro level. So, that's one she would say. More on like a personal professional side of it, LinkedIn comes to mind. She relies on LinkedIn to help spread the word to help open the eyes of what they're doing and how conversational AI is being leveraged in healthcare to drive outcomes, to drive business outcomes. So, that's another one that's more kind of on a personal professional side that comes to mind as well. Books that Have Had the Biggest Impact on Leslie When asked about books that have had a great impact, Leslie stated that she doesn't have the tattoo but if she were going to get a tattoo of a book, it would be this one it's called Conscious Capitalism, With a New Preface by the Authors: Liberating the Heroic Spirit of Business. Leslie stated that if she was at a networking event, chances are before they were done talking, she would talk about Conscious Capitalism. Conscious Capitalism is a book, but it is a book that articulates a business strategy, that is a proven business strategy with outcomes that benefit, not just the company in terms of profits, but also benefit humanity and help elevate humanity. And there's some principles in Conscious Capitalism as a business strategy that really resonates with her and that drive how she shows up in the world, both professionally and personally. And some of those are really that for business, purpose, and profit must co-exist. We can't just focus on driving profit without purpose, and we won't have a company if we don't have profit. But the two of those must coexist, it really is the essence of the responsibility of business is to have a higher purpose, and to generate profit for the company, for the employees, and to be able to invest back in the organization for growth, for customers. The other thing that really resonates with Conscious Capitalism is more of a shift in mindset from short term gains to long term gains, particularly publicly held companies are very focused on the here and the now and they think of the longer term opportunities and Conscious Capitalism is really more about focusing on the long term vision and outcomes and driving decisions in the here and now based on the vision and where the organization is going in the future. So, that would be her one book, Conscious Capitalism. What Leslie is Really Excited About Now! When asked about something she is really excited about, Leslie stated that she would say the thing that she's really excited about is, she feels like where conversational AI today is it's not known or understood. And so, the thing that she's really excited about is helping organizations and particularly healthcare organizations understand what conversational AI is, and understand how they can leverage it to drive business outcomes and patient outcomes. And so, they've got several things coming up that they're working on to help kind of spread the word. One is next, next month, they're going to bring together healthcare leaders from across all verticals, to their headquarters city in Indianapolis, Indiana, and have conversation around best practices for leveraging and listening to the voice of the customer. They're going to have conversation around the challenges that are present within the healthcare industry. So, she's really excited about that. One of the things that they know, in their work is that when they really listen to customers, they'll guide the way and they're bringing their clients and other healthcare leaders together for purposes of listening, so they can help them guide the way and they can help them achieve the outcomes that they're looking for their business and for their customers. Where Can We Find Leslie Online LinkedIn – Leslie Pagel Quote or Saying that During Times of Adversity Leslie Uses When asked about a quote or saying to she tends to revert to, Leslie stated that she doesn't know who to credit for this quote, but she guesses it's more of a mindset and that mindset is to, “Focus more on others than to focus on yourself.” And it's not to say that focusing on herself isn't important, because it is and that's very intentional in her life. But when she's in a place of struggle, or kind of not feeling it, just reminding herself of focusing on others more than she focus on yourself is something that really helps her redirect her attention and re-engage in the work that she's here to do. Me: All right, perfect. And I think that's even more relevant, that quote that you just shared, especially for the industry that you are in, because when it comes to healthcare, people usually are reaching out to organizations, or hospitals or clinics or doctor's offices because they need help, they're in pain, they're experiencing something that they're uncomfortable with and they need help. So, at that point, it's not about you, it's about them. So, that's a really good quote I think to have and to kind of remind yourself about, especially in the space that you're operating in. Leslie agreed, exactly. Me: Well, thank you so much, Leslie, for coming on to our podcast and sharing all of these great insights about the voice of the customer and the importance of listening. I think even as simple as it sounds, and as you mentioned, it's something that customers have want for decades, not just in the last 12 to 24 months, that we really should pay attention to the opportunities that we have, and that the greater tool that exists is conversational AI, and there are ways that we can integrate it into our everyday activities so that we can get a better understanding of what our customers are looking for. And that way we can really deliver that amazing experience that can hopefully help them to return again and again, and bring their friends and family, although we want them all to be healthy and be good and well. Raj Sisodia opens Act 2 reflecting on Mother Energy. From there, we riff on the foundations of Shakti Leadership, move on to one of the “great callings of our time,” cite cultural shifts at Microsoft under the leadership of Satya Nadella, and pay a short visit to Everybody Matters and CEO Bob Chapman's life- and leadership- changing epiphanies.Raj takes us to South America to set the scene for one of his own transformative experiences that led to a broad, important, multi-generational, extended family healing ritual back in India.Throughout our rich conversation, Raj invites us to look at ourselves, our families, our organizations and, by extension, our world, our place in it, and the opportunity we have to take responsibility for all of it… And ironically, the sense of peace and wholeness available when we accept his healing invitation. After a journey that takes us across cultures, organizations, internal journeys, healing from trauma, energetic realms, and plant medicine, we draw this extraordinary episode to a close with a powerful acronym: LIST.Raj Sisodia is Distinguished University Professor of Conscious Enterprise and Chairman of the Conscious Enterprise Center at Tecnologico de Monterrey in Mexico. Their 100% Grass Fed Beef Sticks are unlike anything else on the market. In fact, they were recently voted in Paleo Magazine as one of the top snacks of the year. The reason is that they are committed to making the highest quality, clean products that are free from problematic ingredients. Their beef comes from 100% grass fed cows raised entirely on natural grass pastures by family farmers right here in the USA. As a result they are healthy and happy. PaleoValley's Pasture-Raised Turkey Sticks Paleovalley Pasture-Raised Turkey Sticks were created to make healthy snacking easier. Their turkey sticks are made from turkeys who are allowed to live as nature intended... on organic grass pastures with plenty of sunshine, fresh air and room to exercise. The result of raising turkeys in such a natural way is a much healthier, clean protein with higher levels of vitamins, minerals, and omega-3s. Unfortunately, virtually all turkey in the USA is conventionally raised with a small portion being "free range" – a virtually meaningless term that simply means the turkeys were allowed access to the outdoors. However, most "free range" turkeys only have access to an outdoor dirt field with no pasture in sight. Their truly pasture-raised turkeys are given full access to outdoor, pesticide-free pasture with plenty of grass and insects for them to nibble on.

What exactly is Conscious Capitalism? It's a way of looking at business responsibly, ethically, and mindfully. It's a global movement that redefines how we look at business and asks us to look at not just shareholder value, but STAKEHOLDER value. Here's a bit from the Conscious Capitalism Credo:We believe that business is good because it creates value, it is ethical because it is based on voluntary exchange, it is noble because it can elevate our existence and it is heroic because it lifts people out of poverty and creates prosperity.Today, I talk with Frank Smith. Frank is the founder of Mosaic Personnel, a recruiting firm in Oklahoma City but he's also a leadership trainer and the leader of Conscious Capitalism's Oklahoma City chapter. Frank shares the definition of Conscious Capitalism and its four core tenets - and you won't be surprised to learn how empathy fits in nicely when it comes to leadership and culture. We discuss the relationship between recruiting and culture development, and some ways that companies big and small are creating intentional business cultures rooted in conscious capitalism. Key Takeaways:Even if someone has the same credentials, they may not fit at different companies. Conscious Capitalism is about elevating life through work, both internally and externally within an organization. Younger generations want to feel like they are making an impact in the world. Conscious Capitalism resonates with them as it gives them an environment where they can feel seen and heard and know they are making a difference. Curiosity is an underrated skill. It is the number one trait of empathetic people. As we get more and more polarized here in the US, the opportunity for civil debate seems less and less feasible. And yet, there is an organization that's more interested in what is right than who is right. A platform where you can hear both sides of an issue in an open-minded environment. Dr. Mark Skousen is the economist, bestselling author and nationally-recognized investment expert behind the longstanding Forecasts & Strategies newsletter and the producer of FreedomFest, an independent, nonpartisan festival where free thinkers meet to celebrate great ideas. He currently teaches at Chapman University, where he is a Presidential Fellow at the George L. Argyros School of Business and Economics. On this episode of The Wiggin Sessions, Dr. Skousen joins me to discuss the idea of gross output, explaining why GO is a better measure of economic growth than GDP. Dr. Skousen introduces us to the investing approach favored by the Austrian school of economics and describes why Austrian economists believe in Bitcoin and gold as a hedge against inflation. Listen in for Dr. Skousen's insight on adjusting your portfolio in the Biden era and learn more about attending the upcoming FreedomFest conference in South Dakota this July. Key Takeaways What's missing from GDP and why gross output (GO) is a better measure of economic growth How GO held up better than consumer spending during the pandemic Why the government should focus on getting businesses back rather than giving people money Dr. Skousen's insight on the benefits of globalization What differentiates the Austrian school of economics and how Austrian economists have influenced Wall Street Dr. Skousen's predictions around inflation and why Austrian economists believe in Bitcoin and gold How investors should adjust our portfolios in the Biden era How Dr. Skousen thinks about Reddit nation, Robinhood and the GameStop saga How big tech is becoming a threat to free speech and why we need the freedom to dissent FreedomFest's focus on civil debate that explores both sides of a given issue Connect with Dr. Mark Skousen Dr. Skousen's Website Forecasts & Strategies FreedomFest Connect with Addison Wiggin Consilience Financial Be sure to follow The Wiggin Sessions on your socials. Topic: Fate Stay/Night: Unlimited Blade Works Review While mom didn’t watch all of it, she actually kind of wants to now, just to see where the story goes. This isn’t a bad thing, if anything, another person who will finally understand my undying love for Saber. Okay maybe not undying love, but atleast sees these complicated characters and world for what they are. To help people follow along, here’s a list of the various characters that are seen throughout the series, to better allow you to follow along. Masters: Shirou Emiya A lead protagonist, and Master of Saber. He has a strong sense of justice and wants to be a hero, despite little to no aptitude for magic. While unfamiliar with the rules and true nature of events, he fights in an effort to stop all the fighting and end the war as soon as possible. Rin Tohsaka Daughter of a prestigious mage family, she is the Master of Archer, and tends to act as a Tsudere type character. (IE, acts very brash and brutish to the main character, before becoming friendly and loving with them later.) Rin continues to pursue the Holy Grail due to her family’s strong desire to reach the Root, and joins only out of obligation. Illyasviel von Einzbern She is from a prestigious Mage family and is the Master of Berserker. While she appears to be the youngest participant in the war, she is actually 18 years old, but takes the form of a ten to twelve year old child. She is actually a homunculi and Shirou’s step sister, for whom she has a conflicted relationship. She believes she was abandoned for Shirou, but in reality, her father was unable to return to the castle to retrieve Illya, leaving her to be lonely and pressured to perfect her magical skills. Shinji Matou Sakura’s older brother and Master of Rider. A chauvinistic and a narcissist, he openly treats Shirou with hostility and derision. He is has no real magical skill, as the Matou family’s magical bloodline has been diluted over the decades. This is what prompts the head of the Matou family to adopt Sakura, previously of the Tohsaka Family, and raise her to be the Matou’s next heir instead of Shinji. This prompts Shinji to take his anger and frustrations out on Sakura. Souichirou Kuzuki A strict teacher of Rin’s Class, he is the Master of Caster. While he does not desire the Grail, he becomes the master of Caster due to Caster killing her previous master and him wanting to help her. It’s implied that Him and Caster are potentially involved romantically. Servants: Saber Artoria Pendragon(King Arthur), the King of Knights, who was actually a girl. She a stoic and knightly figure, but brushes up against Shirou, who tries to save her and sees her more as a girl than a knightly figure. She is in the fight due to her desire to rewind history and stop herself from drawing the sword in the stone. Archer A mysterious individual who is capable of summoning sword and turning them in to Arrows to fire from his bow. He doesn’t remember what Heroic Spirit he is suppose to be, and often acts fickle and teasingly with Rin, and hostile with Shirou, who he dislikes. Despite being a long range class, Archer regularly uses swords he creates from his magic. Lancer Cu Chulainn(Child of Light), a Hero from the Ulster Cycle of Irish Mythology. His master is unknown, but primarily acts as a watchdog and assassin during the course of the war. Berserker Hercules, one of the greatest heroes in Greek mythology. He is deeply loyal to Illyasviel, but lacks emotions due to his Berserker class. His Noble Phantasm is known as his Twelve Labors, which represent his immortality; upon receiving enough damage that would otherwise kill him, he regenerates and loses one of his Labors(Lives). Caster Medea, an unfortunate priestess from the tales of Jason and the Argonauts. She is renown for her magical prowess, which surpasses most masters and magus of this age. Due to her killing her original master, and leaving only six known masters, she uses her magical prowess to obtain fake command seals and summon Assassin, thus becoming the seventh Master. Assassin Sasaki Kojirou, a mythical swordsman said to have faced Miyamoto Musashi in combat. Assassin is actually a false servant, as servants summoned by the Assassin class are all former owners of the name Hassan-i-Sabbah(Old Man of the Mountain). Because he was summoned under false pretenses by Caster, herself a Servant, he is bound to the Ryuudou Temple where both Caster and Souichirou reside, unable to leave the grounds. Rider Medusa, the Gorgon of Greek Mythology. Initially she is the servant to Sakura Matou, but due to Shinji Matou insistence, Sakura transferred her rights as Master to him. She still seeks to protect Sakura but act Loyal to Shinji’s orders and commands. Her Noble Phantasm is a Pegasus that she rides, hence of the Rider Class. Other: Sakura Matou A part of a rival Mage Family, she is a friend to Shirou and often takes care of him. She does this as her Brother is mean and cruel to Shirou, and she does it as penance for her brother’s actions. She primarily serves as a support character during the Fate and Unlimited Blade Works routes, but becomes a primary protagonist during the Heaven’s Feel route, where we find out how poorly she was treated and routinely tortured by the Matou’s magical training, and by Shinji. Kirei Kotomine An Observer from the Holy Church, he was a former master in the 4th Holy Grail War and acts as an impartial judge and moderator for the 5th Holy Grail War. He is described as a defective person: finding pleasure in the misfortune and suffering of others, but never openly seeking it for them. He acts as Rin’s legal guardian, and convinces Shirou to participate in the Holy Grail War. Gilgamesh The King of Heroes, ruler of Mesopotamia, and considered the first hero due to his record being amongst the first ever recorded. He was of the Archer Class during the 4th Holy Grail War, but survived to take on a mortal body following its conclusion. He acts as a 8th Servant during the 5th Holy Grail War. Gilgamesh is known for believing everything of value belongs to him, including the Holy Grail. His Noble Phantasm is known as the Gate of Babylon, a massive vault that holds all the treasures he collected during his life time, including all the prototypes of Noble Phantasms, which he launches like bullets and rockets at his enemies. Taiga Fujimura Shirou’s legal guardian and English teacher at the school Rin, Sakura, Shinji, and Shirou all attend. While she a comedic character, she is unaware of the magical nature of the events happening around her, and is oblivious to the events of the series. She plays limited parts in the various routes, and is primarily a background character.

Topic: Fate / Stay Night Tutorial Today, we dive deep in to one of my favorite Anime Franchise, the Fate series, specifically Fate Stay/Night and its prequel Fate Zero. I know that the series is very dense and large, especially when you consider all the spin offs and media that exists out there for it. And that’s before you get to ALL of the Sabers out there…. Let dive in! What is it? Fate / Stay Night, or the Fate Franchise, is a part of a large universe of characters and stories in the Nasu-verse, a fictional universe created by Kinoko Nasu of Type-Moon. Created initially as a Visual Novel in 2004, and the third major work of Type-Moon, the series was an immediate success and quickly spawned a massive franchise that dwarfs many of Type-Moon previous and future works. While the Fate Franchise is the most popular work, the Nasu-verse comprises of several series, including: Kara no Kyoukai (jp: Boundary of Emptiness / eng: Garden of Sinners) A series revolving around Shiki Ryogi, a paranormal investigator with the ability to see and cut the mystical lines of mortality in anything, and her friend, Mikiya Kokutō, a fellow assistant investigator who works alongside the powerful Sorceress Tōko Aozaki in her agency. Tsukihime (eng: Lunar Princess) Tells the story of Shiki Tohno, who like Shiki Ryogi, can see the mystical lines of mortality of anything and cut them, thus ending the their existence. The story progress as he faces vampires and changes depending on which heroine he chooses follow throughout the story. What is a Visual Novel? A Visual Novel is like a Choose your own adventure in book, though typically takes the form of visuals with characters standing up against a back drop/setting and a serious of dialog boxes express what the characters are saying or doing. Most games follow branching story lines which lead to various endings depending on the actions taken by the player. In most games, the Player takes on the role of the lead character and is given a limited pool of options to react or respond to when presented by events or situations in the game. An example could be a character asking if they look good, with the player being given the choice between various options to respond; and depending on the answer, will trigger a reaction from the character. Visual novels are popular within Japanese media as they are relatively cheap to produce and create, as most Visual Novels rely on beautiful still art of characters, their reactions, backgrounds, and occasional splash pages, along with minimal background music, and focus more on stories. Few visual novels rely on motion graphics or voice acting, and if they do, it is limited to an opening scene or trailer for the game. Most games tend to lead toward a particular demographic, and offer fan service for those demographic in an effort to get them to buy the game. Most Visual novels are of the Eroge, or Erotic, variety; which primarily focus on stories that have sexually explicit scenes and graphics depicting those scenes. Eroge games can range from Teen to Adult rating, with some game being straight Hentai, while others are more titillating and offer fan service. A popular theme among Visual novels tends to be Harem based games with a single character with multiple love interests of the opposite sex. History / Lore Fate / Stay Night, at heart, is a story revolving around Shirou Emiya, who unwittingly joins a secret Battle Royal involving six other mages and each of their servants in the Holy Grail War. As the name suggests, the ultimate prize is the Holy Grail, a creation of magic that can grants any wish from the winner of the War. During the time of Fate / Stay Night, this is the fifth incarnation of the Holy Grail War within the fictional city of Fuyuki City, on the south tip of Japan. The city was chosen for its strong ley lines, but also due to no magus or holy church involvement in the area during the First War in 1790s. Within the Fate / Stay Night, there are three different routes/stories that exist within the game, each of which change the nature of the story dramatically once they split off from one another. These include: Fate Route – Primarily Focusing on Saber and building the world/lore of the game. Unlimited Blade Works Route – Primarily Focuses on Rin Tohsaka and her servant Archer, and places more development of the various cast of character than the other routes. Heavens Feel Route - Primarily Focuses on Sakura Matou and her servant Rider, and focus more on the background behind the Holy Grail War, along with the darker aspects of the world that led up to the current events. One must complete each individual route in order to progress on the next route. While each route tells a different story and aspect of the world and events, they all use the same characters, who each have the same feelings and emotions, but differing motives as the story progresses. Each Holy Grail War consists of seven Mages and their Servants. Servants are summoned individuals known as Heroic Spirits, which take on the form of famous historical figures. These historical figures can be real life individuals or fictional individuals that actually did exist within Nasu-verse. Most characters range from various myths and stories, but most range from stories originating within Europe primarily. Examples of historical figures include: King Arthur Gilgamesh Alexander the Great Hercules Medea Medusa Gilles de Rais Lancelot Each Servant being summoned may be one of seven available classes of Heroic Spirits being summoned, with only one class per War, in order to make the war fair. Each servant is referred to by their class, in order for other servants and mages to not realize who the Heroic Spirit is and thus gain a tactical advantage. IE, might be known as Gilgamesh, but is referred to as Archer. Each class has benefits and weakness, some are based on strength, while others are based on tactical or strategic advantages or weakness. These classes include: Saber – A knight who uses Swords in combat, considered very desire-able class. Archer – A knight who uses ranged weapons, ie Bow and Arrows, guns, or any other kind of projectile. Lancer – A knight who uses a Lance, Spear, or Medium range weapons in combat Berserker – A strength based hero who dominates with overwhelming force Assassin – An rogue typically who is known for killing their opponents from the shadows or in a secretive manner Rider – An individual known for riding or driving a vehicle or creature Caster – A Magical Type of individual Each Mage has three Command Seals upon their right or left hand, which symbolize their pact with their servants, and are laid out artfully in accordance with the Mage’s style of magic. Each Command Seal can compel the servant to act or do as the Mage commands, with the more concrete and forward commands being the most beneficial to the Mage over more broad ranged commands. Mages and Servants may or may not work well together, as some Servant or Mage classes out right hating each other, while others are distrustful, and others are best bonds in the world. Most servants act in accordance with their Mages, as Mages supply the very mana necessary for the Heroic Spirit to exist within the physical world. A Mage is considered disqualified from the War if they lose their Servant and do not make a pact with a new Servant(One that has already been summoned), or dies during the war. As eluded to earlier, the true purpose of the Holy Grail War is not to grant wishes, but intended to harvest mana and magic from the servants that participate within the Holy Grail War, and then use it to activate the Greater Grail and reach a mythical origin (Root) of magic. The system however is fundamentally flawed, as the Greater Grail can only be held by a servant, thus limiting it to only granting wishes. However, during the 3rd Holy Grail War, the Holy Grail itself was corrupted by a rogue servant, thus causing the Holy Grail to be tampered and would not work properly regardless of the magic absorbed in to it. With the Main Story, includes a few notable characters: Shirou Emiya – Lead protagonist and Master for Saber. He has a strong sense of justice and wants to be a hero, despite little to no aptitude for magic. Saber – Artoria Pendragon(King Arthur), the King of Knights, who was actually a girl. She a stoic and knightly figure, but brushes up against Shirou, who tries to save her and sees her more as a girl than a knightly figure. Rin Tohsaka – Daughter of a prestigious mage family, she is the Master of Archer, and tends to act as a Tsudere type character. (IE, acts very brash and brutish to the main character, before becoming friendly and gentle with them later.) Archer – A mysterious individual who is capable of summoning sword and turning them in to Arrows to fire from his bow. He doesn’t remember what Heroic Spirit he is suppose to be, and often act fickle and teasingly with Rin, and hostile with Shirou, who he dislikes. Sakura Matou – A part of a rival Mage Family, she is a friend to Shirou and often takes care of him. She does this as her Brother is mean and cruel to Shirou, and she does it as penance for her brother’s actions. Shinji Matou – Sakura’s older brother and Master of Rider. A chauvinistic and a narcissist, he openly treats Shirou harsh and coldly, and often takes out frustrations on his sister. Illyasviel von Einzbern – She is from a prestigious Mage family and is the Master of Berserker. She is the youngest participant in the war, at only 12 years old. She is actually a half- homunculi and Shirou’s step sister. She is intended to become the Holy Grail upon the completion of the Holy Grail War, using her body as the catalyst for its creation. To Date, there have been animated version of all three routes. Fate / Stay Night (2006) – Studio Deen While the original Fate Route is fully realized, many fans considered it an inferior interpretation due to its animation issues and the later releases. Fate / Stay Night – Unlimited Blade Works Movie (2010) Studio Deen A singular Movie version of the Unlimited Blade Works Route, however, much like the previous work, it is considered inferior interpretation, as it glosses over a lot of the events and details from the game. Fate / Stay Night – Unlimited Blade Works (2014-2015) ufotable After the success of Fate/Zero, this is considered the superior version of the Unlimited Blade Works Route, as it more closely follows the route’s events, along with the superior arts and animation from ufotable. Fate / Stay Night – Heaven’s Feel (Presage Flower), (Lost Butterfly), & (Spring Song) (2017-2020) ufotable Released as a series of three films, ufotable returned to animate the Heaven’s Feel route and knocked it out of the park. Spin Offs The fate series to date has had a number of spin offs from the original game, some which are better documents in novels, video games, manga, anime, and/or other visual novels. Fate / Zero The Prequel to Fate/ Stay Night, it tells the story of Kiritsugu Emiya, Shirou’s adopted father, along with his servant Saber, as they participate in the Fourth Holy Grail War, just 10 years prior to the events of Fate / Stay Night. The prequel is considered a better place to start the Fate series, as it outlines the events of the Battle Royal and sets up the various Fate routes better when viewed later. It was initially started as a light novel series before being animated by ufotable in 2011. Fate/hollow ataraxia A continuation of the Fate Story 6 months later, however, from the vantage point of Bazett Fraga McRemitz, a mage sent by the Magus Association to participate in the 5th Holy Grail War. She is the original master of Lancer before he is stolen from her. The story takes place in the dream of Bazett and follows her and her servant, Avenger, as they replay through the events of Fate / Stay Night’s various routes. While it is a continuation of the story, it’s not the direct continuation of any particular route, and is left to open interpretation as to the true events that actually did happen during Fate / Stay Night. Fate/Prototype Considered the original Version of the Fate / Stay Night Story, it was the initial draft and documents for the series. It’s notable as it re-contextualizes a lot of characters, including making King Arthur a man and Shirou as a female with magical aptitude. It has only a short animation included after Carnival Phantasm, but sparked a lot of interest from the fan community. Fate/Apocrypha A true Spin Off, it re-imagines the Holy Grail War having been stolen during the Third Holy Grail War, and pits two warring factions (Red and Black) who each summon seven servants to battle against the opposing side. The Story primarily It’s notable as it introduces Mordred as the Saber of Red and the Son of King Arthur (despite Mordred being a girl too), but also introduces an 8th Class of Servant known as Ruler (Joan of Arc), a neutral party that acts as a mediator and official for the Holy Grail War. Originally a Light Novel Series, it was later animated by A-1 Pictures in 2017. Fate/EXTRA (Extella, CCC) Another true Spin Off, it re-imagines the Holy Grail War as a tournament with where the final victor will grant a wish. This started off as a dungeon crawling video game series in 2010-2011, with Sequels including Fate / Extella, and Fate / Extra CCC. It’s notable for having Red Saber, the first non-Arthurian variation on Saber, despite looking similar to Artoria Saber. She is actually Nero Claudius Caesar, the 5th Roman Emperor. It was animated in to a single series: Fate/EXTRA: Last Encore directly to Netflix in 2018. Carnival Phantasm Existing within the Nasu-verse, this is a light hearted, comedy affair. Carnival Phantasm re-imagines most of the characters with their personalities and faults dialed up for comedic effect, and includes various other character outside of the Fate Franchise, most notable Tsukihime. It initially started as a manga in 2004-2005 before being animated in 2011-2012 by studio Lerche. Fate/kaleid liner PRISMA☆ILLYA A magical girl variation on the Fate Franchise, this variation re-imagines Illya as a human girl who gains the powers of a Magical Girl. The universe takes influences from the Nasu-verse, but instead of summoning heroics spirits, people equip class cards and summon heroic spirits in to themselves and fight in the war. Illya uses her magic wand/stick to activate weapons and merge with various heroic spirits available to that class. The series is known for being very cute looking, but heavy on fan service and heavily implied sexual harassment of various characters. It started as a manga, and has been adapted to various seasons in anime from 2013 – 2016, with various movies after that. Emiya-san Chi no Kyou no Gohan (Today's Menu for Emiya Family) A light hearted affair, it imagines the Holy Grail War as not happening and instead various Masters and Servants living together peacefully. Each episode focuses on preparing a meal for dinner in the Emiya house, which often includes other characters in the Fate / Stay Night story coming to visit for dinner. Most episodes show someone cooking and going through the process to make the dinner or meal, with Saber as a self insert character having never seen most of the meals cooked. The light hearted and warm feeling shows a different side of the characters that more homely and healing. Home Work: Fate Stay/Night: Unlimited Blade Works CrunchyRoll Netflix
In today's episode, we cover conscious leadership with John Mackey. John is the CEO and cofounder of Whole Foods as well as author of bestselling Conscious Capitalism and Conscious Leadership. Being an effective leader is not just about leading the people around you, but being conscious of each individual and how you can help them grow around you, so what can you do to become a conscious leader, think about your competition in a positive way, and create an empowering environment at work and home? What to Listen For What is the difference between leadership and conscious leadership and how do you balance the two? How do you lead with love in the cutthroat world of business? How should you think about competition if you are a business owner so that you think of your competitors in a positive light rather than something that needs to be beaten? Why is it important for conscious leaders to have a strong vision and how can not having one lead to disaster? What 3 tips can you follow to learn from your mistakes if you want to be successful? What signals can you look for in prospective employees for high emotional intelligence? What can you do to create an empowering environment in your workplace? How can you respond to criticism in a healthy positive manner? Why is gratitude so important to being happy and what gratitude practice can you use to lead a happier and more fulfilling life? Being conscious of the people around you takes effort, even more so when you are also in a leadership position since you are relying on the people around you for your own success and so it can be easy to forget to treat everyone the way each individual wants to be treated. But nothing worthwhile in life is obtained with ease, and the effort you put into being a conscious leader will pay off in the long run when the people around you support you and do everything they can to help you succeed. Amy Heymans is Mad*Pow's Chief Experience Officer and one its foundersof. We talk about how the practice of design is evolving, the emerging role of behavior design, purpose-driven design, and making sure the problems designers are asked to solve connect to business outcomes. Show Host: Dawan Stanford Show Summary A love of art led Amy into a career as a designer. She started in web design during the dot-com bubble where she became passionate about user research, usability, and user experience. After the bubble burst, she began to freelance, working in partnership with a former colleague. One project led to another, and the two continued to work together until, eventually, they founded Mad*Pow, fueled by Amy's vision of design being used to improve the human condition. Their passion for creating positive change transformed them into healthcare innovation pioneers. Since its inception, Mad*Pow has been at the forefront of helping businesses across multiple industries create human-centered and purpose-driven solutions using design thinking, strategic design, and behavioral change design. Amy offers listeners her insight into the way design is currently evolving, what the future of design will look like, and how behavior change design is an integral part of that evolution. Listen in to learn more about: The evolution of design thinking and purpose-driven design Innovation in healthcare How designers are shaping business model design The business environment necessary for long-term innovation success Behavior change design — what it is, and how it's changing design Our Guest's Bio Amy believes that design can help improve the human condition. It was with that mission and vision that she founded Mad*Pow in 2000. Amy plays an essential role in Mad*Pow's visualization of a changed healthcare system in the United States. Her work with companies like Aetna, CVS, McKesson, and Fidelity has helped them improve the experiences their patients and customers have with them, leverage design to drive change, and facilitate human-centric innovation. As the chief instigator behind Mad*Pow'sHealthcare Experience Design Conference—now in its fifth year and expanded and rebranded as HxRefactored—Amy has successfully connected and networked disparate parts of a challenging and siloed system. As a speaker, Amy shares her vision and methodology at influential events such as Design Management Institute, UXPA, IA Summit, Partners Center for Connected Health Symposium, Stanford MedicineX, Health 2.0, and HIMSS. With her partners Will Powley and Bradley Honeyman, Amy's grown Mad*Pow's presence, client base, and revenue, leading to Mad*Pow's 2009 recognition as one of Inc. 500's fastest growing privately held companies. Mass High Tech, which named her one of its 2009 Women to Watch, has recognized Amy's passion, energy, and commitment, and she's been acknowledged as one of Boston's “40 Under 40” by the Boston Business Journal for 2014. How leaders are judged in a difficult time is not necessarily what they said or did, but how they made people feel. Leaders who are genuinely empathetic and concerned for the needs of those they represent will come across as honest, sincere, and authentic. In this interview, we speak of the essential inner game quality of emotional intelligence and how this, combined with self-awareness, creates greater social awareness and relationship mastery. When we think and feel into the bigger problems we as a human race, society, and business need to solve, it all comes down to relationships. Find the path forward to a socially responsible workplace and the world with Johanna Lyman. Johanna Lyman is the Principal Consultant and Practice Leader for Culture and Inclusion at Kadabra. She is a dynamic, energetic Leadership and Culture coach and consultant with nearly 30 years of experience in leadership development and culture change. She is adept at combining coaching, training, and facilitation to help clients build sustainably profitable businesses while creating deep meaning in their work. She believes that inclusion and diversity should be seen as the natural outcomes of building great cultures. Key Takeaways: [:01] Carley Hauck introduces the importance of cultivating greater emotional intelligence as one of the conscious inner game skills that will allow you to develop relationship mastery and connect with others on a greater level. [6:36] Introducing Johanna Lyman, who shares the experiences that led her to knowing why conscious leadership in business, integrity and recognizing our shared humanity matters to her. [10:53] The tools for inner work that Johanna has been engaging in to help her through this VUCA time include meditation, a social media fast, and recognizing the gifts of the pandemic and the lessons we can learn from them. [17:48] Emotional intelligence and the importance of being present in uncertain times to allow us to develop an increased sense of self-awareness. [23:14] These unprecedented times have given us the opportunity to change the world from a place of abundance or scarcity to a place of sufficiency. [27:53] How the flying trapeze and bouldering can teach us to let go of the things we are used to holding onto in order to move toward something better. [30:50] The four aspects of emotional intelligence as they relate to upping the inner and the outer game and our ability to lead consciously. [38:17] Everyone is feeling more than they’ve ever felt before in this pandemic, and the weight of the feelings is resting on leaders who have not been trained to manage it all. What can be done about it? Start with the Zoom In, Zoom Out practice. [42:48] How to refine the critical piece of emotional intelligence in all that we are learning in these unprecedented times. [46:08] Supporting leaders and workplaces in the important conversations that need to be taking place right now starts with embracing the fact that mistakes are going to be made. [50:12] The various levels of learning that can effectively create change, including addressing and unraveling racism. [55:37] Prioritizing people over the planet and protecting people of color so that we can save our planet and create a more equitable workplace for everyone. Welcome to the Shawn Jenkins Podcast, a podcast on how to build and grow software and cloud companies. As I was building my software company, I craved behind-the-scenes, real-world examples of how founders and leaders built their companies. I wanted to hear how they made decisions, overcame obstacles, survived difficult times, and went on to sustained growth. On my podcast, we will have conversations with leaders who are in the midst of growing their software and cloud businesses. We will hear their stories, dig deep into difficult challenges, work through complex decisions, and explore ways to celebrate successes. In this episode, we have a fascinating conversation with Dan Currin (@DanCurrin), the cofounder of OrgChartHub. Dan and I discuss his business model of building applications inside a partner ecosystem. In his case, that partner is HubSpot. We get into the advantages provided by this model and the opportunities to rapidly get up and running with your business. We also discussed the limitations of being in one ecosystem. Those limitations, however, do not seem to be stopping Dan from building the company and lifestyle he loves. I found this conversation refreshing, insightful, and a sign of a new wave of micro SaaS businesses to come. Please enjoy my conversation with Dan, and if you have questions that you would like to hear covered in future episodes, please email me at shawnjenkinsblog@gmail.com. Thanks and enjoy. Welcome to the first in our Podcast Showcase Series with Paul Shapiro and Toni Okamoto interviewing John Mackey. He started this little company, grew it, and then sold it to Amazon. You might know it as Whole Foods Market. Though Paul and Toni can tell you all about their guest, I can tell you a little bit about Paul and Toni. This super star duo is hosted by none other than Paul Shapiro, animal activist, author and now CEO of the Better Meat Co, and Toni Okamoto, who is a cookbook author, and the creator of Plant-based on a Budget, which encourages people that eating plant-based doesn’t have to be expensive. Toni was featured on What The Health and has a pretty viral youtube video where she and her business partner Michelle Cehn compare the Beyond Burger and the Impossible Burger. As many know, Paul and I met on the My Food Job Rocks podcast and through chance, I got the opportunity to found Better Meat Co with him. Paul chose Sacramento to be the HQ of Better Meat Co, not because of strategy but because that is where Toni lives, his fiance’s home town. I was happy about the location for my own personal reasons as well. As Paul learned about how I did my podcast through the many talks we’ve had, he was very impressed with the number of connections and knowledge I’ve amassed throughout a couple of years of doing this and thought it would be valuable and fun to do a podcast with Toni. Business for Good is a podcast that focuses on the businesses that solve humanities biggest problems and one of those problems being food! Today, we go into the mind of John Mackey, Paul’s friend, but also the CEO and CEO-founder of Whole Foods. Business for Good as many other episodes that focus on food, such as slavery-free chocolate and investors for plant-based companies. But they also have an impressive list of other guests such as coral reef revitalists, musicians who are making a sustainable impact, and… toilet paper companies where if you buy their products, they will build toilets in third world countries. Without further ado, enjoy the first episode of the Business for Good’s podcast, their episode with John Mackey. You can check out more of Paul and Toni’s episode at businessforgoodpodcast.com Shownotes As a student, John Mackey was an idealistic hippie who worked in a vegetarian co-op while studying religion and philosophy. He never took a business class during his whole academic career. In other words, he wasn’t exactly the guy people would’ve placed bets on to become a businessman, let alone one who’d launch a natural foods empire called Whole Foods Market that would get purchased by Amazon for $14 billion. (Note: John long ago stopped taking a salary and even donated all of his Whole Foods stock, so he didn’t see a penny of the sale.) Listen to John discuss with Toni Okamoto and Paul Shapiro his thoughts on everything from venture capitalists and labor unions to Whole Foods’ sale to Amazon and of course how to do good in the world via business. While some might say the act of being conscious and the practice of capitalism have little to do with one another, Whole Foods Market co-founder and co-CEO John Mackey believes differently. John discusses the consciousness, mindfulness, creativity and love that goes into running the billion-dollar business. A strong believer in the adage "follow your dreams," John shares his inspiring personal story and why he believes it is critical that we all strive to live more conscious lives. John also talks about his New York Times best-selling book, "Conscious Capitalism: Liberating the Heroic Spirit of Business."

Robb has spent his career working at the intersection of technology and sustainability in roles with Arthur D. Little, the National Renewable Energy Laboratory and several Silicon Valley startups. He holds a Masters degree in Engineering from Stanford and an MBA from UC-Berkeley. Top Takeaways: The water sector has amazing committed people. They want to do something meaningful. This extends to the technology-oriented folks–developers and engineers. For those young professionals that want to make a difference, there’s a lot to like about the water industry. Customers view water utilities on the same level as the other utilities they communicate with regularly. They expect a higher level of service and access such as real-time alerts regarding usage thresholds, leaks, and bill notification. Access to information isn’t just about bill pay and water usage. It also provides utilities the ability to communicate about other areas of concern for customers such as hydrant flushing. Robb gives a case study on (https://www.dropcountr.com/resources/digital-customer-relationship/) outside of Boston. At the 2018 WaterSmart Innovations Conference: Alliance for Water Efficiency (http://www.allianceforwaterefficiency.org/default.aspx) are teaming up to discuss the importance of communicating with your Spanish speaking population in your community. A more complete inclusivity requires delivery of information in a language that’s preferred by the customer. If you want to educate and develop that relationship then you need to be speaking the same language. Whether Spanish is a requirement or just a preference, it’s a pretty nice gesture. It’s more than a translated website, you can actively engage in the culture. “Strive to be more than a vendor, be an industry participant.” Robb Barnitt, Founder and Chief Executive at Dropcountr Resources: Scrum: The Art of Doing Twice the Work in Half the Time (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/1847941109/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=9325&creativeASIN=1847941109&linkCode=as2&tag=theh2duo-20&linkId=9152644631dea660e3f9d0cfadbeee68) by Jeff Sutherland Ad feedback Conscious Capitalism: the Heroic Spirit of Business (https://amzn.to/2Dp0BYW) by John Mackey and Raj Sisodia Tech resources: (https://techcrunch.com/) (https://news.ycombinator.com) (https://mavensnotebook.com/) Survey: (https://www.jdpower.com/business/press-releases/jd-power-2018-water-utility-residential-customer-satisfaction-study) (https://www.theh2duo.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/09/image.png) Sponsor: (http://water.mastermeter.com/the-essential-guide-to-financing-smart-water-projects?__hstc=6103788.f03d2f8a133aa3e4d2ccf03cb7dc7f64.1514478942066.1514574040855.1516406742564.5&__hssc=6103788.4.1516406742564&__hsfp=82336232) Show notes: [4:20] Robb’s origin story, from rural America to water tech startup CEO. As a student, John Mackey was an idealistic hippie who worked in a vegetarian co-op while studying religion and philosophy. He never took a business class during his whole academic career. In other words, he wasn’t exactly the guy people would’ve placed bets on to become a businessman, let alone one who’d launch a natural foods empire called Whole Foods Market that would get purchased by Amazon for $14 billion. (Note: John long ago stopped taking a salary and even donated all of his Whole Foods stock, so he didn’t see a penny of the sale.) Listen to John discuss with Toni and Paul his thoughts on everything from venture capitalists and labor unions to Whole Foods’ sale to Amazon and of course how to do good in the world via business. Maybe it was Gordon Gekko declaring that “greed is good,” or before that, Silent Cal Coolidge saying that “the business of America is business.” Or maybe it was simply the financial crash of 2008/2009? Whatever the reason, business today has an approval rating of about 19%...just about as bad as Congress. But why? Business has been the great engine of progress of the American experience. From the Man in the Grey Flannel Suit to the jeans and turtlenecks of Steve Jobs. As David Brooks put it today, “America’s greatest innovations and commercial blessings were unforeseen. They emerged, bottom up, from tinkerers and business outsiders.” So why does business get such a bad rap? Sure we idealize small business, but it’s big business that creates jobs, lifts people up and changes the culture. John Mackey has been working on this problem, first in his own business, Whole Foods, and now in Conscious Capitalism: Liberating the Heroic Spirit of Business. My conversation with John Mackey:
