The fantasy world was doing just fine. Wizards were arguing about spell slots. Fighters were polishing swords. Rogues were stealing absolutely everything not nailed down. Then somebody invented firearms. Now the wizard wants an arcane revolver, the artificer is building a rifle powered by dragon crystals, and the fighter has spent twenty minutes explaining why attaching a bayonet to a musket absolutely still counts as melee combat. Progress is inevitable. Chaos is optional. Players will choose chaos every time. Show Notes This episode dives into one of the most divisive and surprisingly fun topics in tabletop RPG design: firearms. We explore what happens when black powder, pistols, muskets, revolvers, and magical weapons enter worlds traditionally ruled by swords and spellbooks. The answer is not simply bigger damage numbers. Firearms change the entire feel of a setting. We dig into how guns influence worldbuilding, tone, and gameplay. A lone flintlock in a low fantasy campaign tells a very different story than enchanted firearms in a magitech world. The conversation expands into how technology reshapes societies, military power, adventuring groups, and even the place of magic itself. The episode also looks at practical considerations for GMs and players. We discuss balancing firearms mechanically, deciding how common they should be, and avoiding the trap of letting realism overwhelm gameplay. Sometimes the important question is not whether firearms belong in fantasy. It is what kind of fantasy world they create. The host (Remi Warren) explains why hunting guides almost instinctively say “reload” immediately after a shot, and why every hunter should build the same automatic habit—regardless of whether they think the first shot was perfect.Key ideasCorrect order of operations after shooting: Reload → reacquire/refind the animal → reassess → reshoot if needed. Many hunters do it backwards (“Did I hit it?” first), which wastes the small window where a follow-up shot is possible.Why it matters: Seconds lost to fumbling a reload or searching for the animal can mean:missing a clean follow-up opportunity,turning a quick recovery into a long tracking job,or losing an animal entirely.Guiding stories illustrate the point:A rifle client argues “no way I missed” instead of reloading, and loses a second shot opportunity.A bowhunter misses low, the bull stops again, and the guide has to push “reload” to get the second arrow off—this time it works and the elk is recovered.How to practice (so it becomes automatic)Rifle: Don't only shoot slow groups from the bench. Practice realistic field positions and deliberately train fast, smooth follow-up shots (reload + get back on target). Also practice at different scope magnifications so you can reacquire quickly.Bow: Practice shooting, nocking another arrow immediately, drawing again, and being ready to shoot—so the reload step happens without conscious thought.Main takeaway“Reload” isn't about assuming you missed—it's about being prepared. When reloading and getting back on target becomes muscle memory, you stay calm, make better decisions, and greatly increase the odds of a quick, ethical recovery.

Jack Nesbitt and Cameron Reid are coming in from the OHL. Expect JP Hurlbert to come in from the WHL. All four lines have depth and competition opportunities.    Segment 2 Projecting the 2026-2027 defensive roster. Need Henry Mews to take on a huge role, but can he be an elite defenseman? Ben Robertson, Asher Barnett, Dakoda Rheaume-Mullen, and Drew Schock will give the team an unusually high amount of depth. Michigan might add one or two more players on defense to round out the roster. Expect Jack Ivankovic to remain the starter at goalie but Stephen Peck has at least earned some starts.
