Contributing writer Jake Fogleman and I cover the early political and legal fallout from the Georgia High School shooting, including what it could mean for the Presidential race as well as the trend of criminally charging the parents of mass shooters. We also talk about a new political ad campaign launched by gun control group March for Our Lives and Ben & Jerry's targeted at voters in swing states. We wrap up with some original reporting on the upcoming NRA board meeting where the group is potentially set to vote on an internal reform program and consider separating from its longtime outside legal counsel, William Brewer.

When a once-promising young writer agrees to ghostwrite a famous physicist's memoir, his livelihood is already in jeopardy: Plagued by debt, he's grown distant from his wife, and is haunted by an overwhelming sense of dread he describes as “The Mist.” Then, things get worse: The physicist vanishes, leaving everything in limbo, including our narrator's sanity. Author and poet William Brewer joins us for an in-person reading and discussion of his new novel, "The Red Arrow," available now from Knopf/Penguin Random House. Recorded live at Taylor Books in Charleston, West Virginia, in August 2022. For more on William Brewer and "The Red Arrow," visit williambrewer.net or the publisher's page here. A mind-expanding, hypnotic novel about depression, psychedelics and, finally, love. It was a strange time. He felt like he was happy. It was strange because it wasn't so long ago that he was convinced the only way out of the depression that had crippled him since he was a child was death. But now, he is on a high-speed train, travelling from Rome to Modena, a failed novelist on the tail of a famous physicist whose memoir he is ghostwriting. The more of another man's life he writes, the more his debt to his publisher is paid off. But nothing would be possible, not the journey, not the writing, not his beautiful wife who is waiting for him at the hotel, had he not experienced the life-altering, life-saving treatment for the darkness which had been hovering since the chemical spill in West Virginia. As the narrator untangles the past in his bid to rewrite the future, he spirals across time, exploring memory, our sense of self and the ways we are connected. A devastating insight into depression, it's also a mind-expanding, exhilarating experience of the power of psychedelic therapy to transform a life.

This episode is a deep dive into the inspiration behind a masterful collection of poems. William Brewer has been touched personally and has taken up a mantle to write for all who have been harmed by the opioid epidemic. Specifically regarding West Virginia, Brewer brings a pointed critique of how the United States can erase states with a "culture of extraction". His lyrical style, amorphous writing style, and his personal opinions drive this episode into avenues of literature and culture previously unexplored on Chapel Phil. Hosting on this episode is Noah. https://williambrewer.net/about

I brought my mom onto my podcast, and you'll hear all about our arguments from my wedding, which included cake, videography, photography, and invitations. And believe it or not, we both admit that the other one was right! Today’s show is all about how moms and daughters can plan a wedding together in peace. As you probably know, the wedding tradition still is that the bride’s parents pay for the wedding, and with so much money invested, there’s going to be some tension – and even some arguing - between brides and moms. Usually when I’m planning a wedding, either the mom or the daughter are my primary contact. And they don’t always get along – sometimes they openly argue right in front of me and it can be pretty tense. I get it, wedding planning can be stressful, and I had a few arguments with my mom too when I was getting married. But whose wedding is it really? Let’s say the parents are paying for the entire wedding – does the mom get to make all of the decisions? What if those decisions aren’t what the daughter wants at all? So I talked to my mom about all of this, plus we talked about our own weddings, what happens to money that’s saved up if a daughter elopes, if we’ll ever get out of the tradition of a brides’ parents paying for a wedding, and finally I get to put my mom through the lightning round. At A Southern Soiree, we’ve been using Honeybook since February 2015. I think we were one of their very first clients, and it has truly been a life changer. They make proposals and contracts super easy to use on both our side and the client side. I think before Honeybook I would send proposals and contracts by email, and the client would have to mail the contract to us or fax it by efax. Proposals were in no way streamlined either, so this has made our lives so much better. As a consultant, whenever I sign up a vendor client, one of the very first recommendations I make is Honeybook. No need to complicate things – it works, it’s great…just get it. And if you follow this link, you get 50% off your first year of Honeybook, which is nice, but not nearly as nice as all the time you’re going to save.
