In this episode of Occupied Thoughts, FMEP Fellow Peter Beinart speaks with researcher Ben Lorber about the "bad-faith disinfo[rmation] attacks" against Hasan Piker and others, which cast critiques of Israel as antisemitism. Peter and Ben look at the competition between the Left and the Right to explain Israel's behavior and define anti-Israel politics, with the Left offering a structural critique of Israel, naming imperialism and ethnonationalism, versus the Right's focus on what they identify as essentialist faults with Jewish character and identity. Ben and Peter also discuss how bad-faith accusations of antisemitism make it difficult to hold productive conversations about antisemitism, Israeli policy, and other political issues, how to think about "calling someone out" vs. "calling them in" over political disagreements; and how to think about political strategies for both short-term and long-term goals.  Ben Lorber is a writer, researcher and movement strategist. He works as Senior Research Analyst at Political Research Associates, a think tank that works to understand and counter authoritarian movements, where he focuses on antisemitism and white Christian nationalism. He is co-author of Safety Through Solidarity: A Radical Guide to Fighting Antisemitism (Melville House, 2024). Peter Beinart is a Non-Resident Fellow at the Foundation for Middle East Peace. As progressives candidates have made electoral gains across the country over the past few weeks, Democrats are once again attempting to discredit the left by pointing to a poor showing with Black voters. For example, attempts have been made to ding Michigan's Abdul El-Sayed with this charge, even as polls show Black voters prefer him to his opponent, and the old "Bernie Bro" smear has even been trotted back out by Maine's Susan Collins . Jim Clyburn went viral for insinuating that Black electeds are justified in selling out because it's harder to fundraise from disproportionately low income Black voter bases, while Cori Bush is facing heaps of AIPAC-funded opposition laundered through a Black political opponent. Meanwhile, factions of the establishment-left are abandoning BLM-era causes like "Defund" in the name of "pragmatism" -- saying these issues hurt prospective DSA electeds. So what's the future of the Black left? I asked Yvette Carnell, co-founder of the ADOS movement -- African Descendants of American Slavery, to join Bad Faith to discuss what ADOS is and isn't, and whether there are opportunities for political allyship between ADOS and the Green Party, given both support reparations, single-payer healthcare, and other policies that corporate Democrats reject. Things Discussed: The Warde Report: Did they find anything? Apparently not. Do we get anything? Apparently not. Really? Eleven months of waiting and the answer is "nothing to see here?" Do we get a "report"? Does one exist? To avoid FOIA it's possible that the findings of the investigation were delivered orally so that they could not be used in litigation (e.g. Shiver's). That's a sad state of affairs, because we are interested parties who deserve access to the findings. The WSJ's thing: Claims Warde was aware of the relationship enough to warn Moore not to bring Shiver on a trip. Doesn't mean anything, unless you really want to stretch it, because the timeline shows the program conducted that investigation after it was brought to the university, and didn't have enough to do anything until Shiver came forward in December, at which point they fired Moore on the spot. Relitigating the scandals and "scandals." Craig says again he thought the Mel Pearson situation was handled correctly, which gets a lot of pushback. Seth says Warde wasn't playing the long game with the NCAA, and his indifferent approach to the buildup of Ohio State influence plus Harbaugh's inability to separate the little reportable stuff from the fights made all of it into a maximal storm over really miniscule events. The one thing that bothered in all of it was letting people into the building during COVID. That's a minor violation that should have been reported. The Bad Faith people—sparties, buckeyes, haters—don't need to be reasoned with. Just block and move on, because trying to reason with hate is a waste of time. Summary of status: They spent $X million(s) on an investigation, the results of which did not lead to the immediate termination of Warde Manuel, and which are not being shared. There is talk of a buyout, which means he's not getting removed now, and probably not for a year at least (there's 3 or 4 years left on his contract). There's clearly a faction that wants him gone, and clearly a faction that needs convincing, and this report did not do any convincing. I feel so....unsatisfied.
