Bronx-based Public defender & DSA organizer Delourny Nemorin recently launched her campaign to unseat Ritchie Torres in New York's 15th district. She weighs in on the rest of the field, including Michael Blake, who is emerging as an establishment-left favorite, why she's running, and the needs of the district. But first, she engages in an extended debate on the value of running to become a Democratic congress member when so many progressives before her seem to have been more changed by the system than the other way around. Does Rashida Tlaib provide an example of what is possible through entryism, or does she remain an outlier who, despite her ideological consistency, has not made the party more like her? How does Delourny interpret various squad members' pro-Israel votes, and how does she intend to insulate herself against whatever influences caused AOC to, for example, claim that Kamala Harris was "tirelessly working for a ceasefire"? What does Delourny make of Zohran's endorsement of Hakeem Jeferries as speaker of the house? And as a prospective colleague of Jefferies, does does Delourny agree that it is not the right time for a challenger? Subscribe to Bad Faith on YouTube for video of this episode. New York Magazine columnist and longtime knower of Zohran Mamdani, Ross Barkan, returns to Bad Faith alongside first time guest, Palestinian activist and founder of Within our Lifetime Nerdeen Kiswani, to discuss recent controversies around mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani following his historical win in New York. Why did Mamdani weigh in on Chi Ossé's potential primary against Hakeem Jefferies instead of sitting it out? If the DSA is concerned about divided resources, why didhe argue that now is not the right "time" for a primary on principle, and why did he go on to endorse Jefferies as Speaker of the House? What's the logic behind keeping Jessica Tisch on board -- especially after the recent ICE activity in NYC? And is Zohran's strategy of giving statements appealing to "both sides" -- criticizing an Israeli settler recruiting event at a NY synagogue while also discouraging protests outside of it -- a successful strategy, or does it simply serve to frustrate everyone? Many lefty guests over the years have raised concerns with defund as a slogan or as a movement goal, but rarely do they have an opportunity to talk directly to an abolitionist and expert like Alec. This conversation represents a real step forward toward the goal better understanding why "defund" was chosen as a label, why defund doesn't necessitate a trade off with public safety, the importance of breaking from reformist movements of the past, and the root of why so many ideologically aligned people bristle at the slogan.   Subscribe to Bad Faith on YouTube for video of this episode. Is having boyfriend embarrassing? Are we living in an era of "heteropessimism"? Are women over marriage? These questions have gone viral in recent weeks as the country continues to grapple with changing gender norms and the effect the right wing radicalization of men has had on women's' attitudes toward marriage and child bearing. This week, a new study showing that, for the first time, female high school seniors were less interested in marriage than male seniors provoked an online debate about whether this was a consequence of growing male conservatism, or alternatively, whether men were facing "bigotry" from women who were making broad and essentialist claims about men. Eighteen year old Zohran volunteer deemed "hot girl for Zohran" by the New York post found herself on one side of the argument, while Drop Site news journalist Ryan Grim found himself on the other. Bad Faith brought them together to hash it out: Whose fault is the male loneliness epidemic, and if the root of the problem is economic, how should the left express sympathy for victims of the root cause without lacking sympathy for the female victims of misogyny?   Subscribe to Bad Faith on YouTube for video of this episode. Ornstein shares his personal history working in the Senate since 1970, citing a loss of 'institutional patriotism' among Republicans and their complete subordination to Donald Trump. He criticizes current congressional leadership, particularly Mike Johnson, and highlights issues like the Senate's blind approval of Trump nominees and the failure of effective oversight. Ornstein also addresses the implications of a government shutdown, the misuse of the Justice Department for political retribution, and the need for an effective Democratic response. He ends on a somber note, comparing current political dynamics to the erosion of democratic norms seen in history, suggesting that the road to recovery is uncertain and fraught with challenges. How is it that Trump seems to have infinite power when Biden, during his trifecta, had none? Did Trump really just do what we were told is impossible: overrule the parliamentarian? Why are Democrats making this a fight about healthcare rather than the fact that the GOP has already effectively shut down the government through their DOGE activities? As Matt argues, oligarchic control over the media is impossible without media consolidation, and the Jimmy Kimmel cancelation fiasco is in some ways secondary to the bigger problem of an undiversified media ecosystem. Bedoya, who is also the founding director of the Center on Privacy and Technology at Georgetown University Law Center, broadens the conversation into one about the founding fathers' original conception of the corporation, and the need to impose limits due to its fundamentally anti-democratic potential. In this eye-opening investigation into the most remarkable points on the map, a single boundary might, upon closer inspection, reveal eons of history—from epic tales of conquest, treaties, and alliances to intimate, all-too-human stories of love, greed, and folly. Sometimes rooted in physical geography, sometimes entirely arbitrary, none of the lines we know today were inevitable, and all might have looked quite different if not for the intricate interplay of chance and ambition. By listening to the stories these borders have to tell, we can learn how political identities are shaped, why the world's boundaries look the way they do—and what they tell us about our world and ourselves. From the very first maps in Egypt to the Roman attempts to define the boundaries of civilization, from the profound shift in meaning of the Mason–Dixon line to the secret British-French agreement to carve up the Ottoman Empire during the First World War, and from the dark consequences of Detroit's city limits to the intriguing reason why landlocked Bolivia still maintains a navy, this is a singular look at human history—told through its most spellbinding border stories. Subscribe to Bad Faith on Patreon to instantly unlock our full premium episode library: http://patreon.com/badfaithpodcast This week, Briahna interviews Matt Taibbi about a narrow concern she's had with the Twitter Files archive: Despite the obvious value that Matt and other twitter files reporters have created by exposing links between the intelligence agencies and online censorship, is it fair to characterize Twitter's bias as against the right and indifferent to the left given how little we know about which documents have been turned over by Elon Musk and why?  Unlike Musk, most whistleblowers are not the heads of the organizations they're informing on. Does Musk's investment in and control over Twitter demand more journalistic scrutiny? Is it possible to characterize the files reviewed so far without making broader claims about about the total archive that, at this point, can't be substantiated? Has there been sufficient inquiry into bias against the left, and has their been sufficient disclosure about the limitations Musk has put on the journalists who've been given access to the archive? It's a difficult and nuanced discussion. Subscribe to Bad Faith on YouTube for video of this episode. Find Bad Faith on Twitter (@badfaithpod) and Instagram (@badfaithpod). Produced by Armand Aviram. Ezra Klein wrote in The New York Times that Kirk was "practicing politics the right way." Rachel Cohen wrote in Vox that she was "sitting shiva" for a man she described as saying "blatantly antisemitic things," and Ben Burgis offered that at least Kirk "didn't descend into personal attacks." Briahna, who also debated Kirk, felt differently. She discusses the hagiography of Charlie Kirk with journalist Zaid Jilani and whether the left is troublingly indifferent to anti-Black racism if delivered "politely." Note that this episode was supposed to include a lengthy conversation about Matt Taibbi's refusal to cover censorship by right-leaning institutions, but, alas, the conversation didn't get that far.
