English/German:Welcome to Klartext Triathlon International! From now on, Sebi and I will be speaking with international athletes. We're kicking things off with Canadian athlete Tamara Jewett.Herzlich willkommen zu Klartext Triathlon International! Von nun an werden Sebi und ich immer wieder mit internationalen Athletinnen und Athleten sprechen, den Anfang macht die Kanadierin Tamara Jewett.English:In today's episode, I have a great chat with Canadian triathlete Tamara Jewett, probably the fastest female runner in triathlon. Tamara has a fascinating sports background—she used to be a pro runner before diving into triathlon. We talk about how she made that switch and what triathlon means to her. Tamara also opens up about her earlier career as a lawyer, which she paused to go all-in on professional sports. We take a closer look at her recent races, celebrating her win at Ironman 70.3 Oceanside and her 11th place finish at the Ironman 70.3 World Championships. Tamara shares a candid experience from the Championships in Lahti, where a time penalty added a twist to her race. We discuss how athletes deal with setbacks like these and the emotions that come with it during critical race moments. We also dive into the competition between Ironman and the Professional Triathletes Organisation (PTO), and talk about the upcoming 2024 World Championship Series and triathlon's significance in Canada. Tamara shares insights into her training routine and connections with fellow Canadian pro athletes.Enjoy listening! Taylor Knibb was part of the silver medal winning Team USA in the Mixed Relay at Tokyo 2020.  She's no stranger to success, twice winning the Junior World Championships and being crowned U23 World Champion. She qualified for the Tokyo Olympics by winning WTCS Yokohama. And she really caught people's attention with some phenomenal performances on her road bike with aero bars. First on her Ironman 70.3 debut in Boulder to qualify for the Ironman 70.3 World Championships, and then again at the Collins Cup, where she beat Teresa Adam and the phenomenal Daniela Ryf. This athlete is going places! You'll hear:   06:45 What is Taylor doing in her bike sessions that nobody else is? 09:50 Why she is going to be changing her swim very soon 11:15 The influence of her mum, Leslie Knibb, who is a triathlon coach and successful age group triathlete. Taylor dropped her mum on the bike for the first time in 2012, as her mum was preparing for Kona! 15:40 Taylor talks about the first time Taylor broke away with Flora Duffy in a WTS race in 2017 'I was 19, it was very intimidating and she didn't say anything the whole ride' 19:35 About her training group in Boulder, under coach Ian O'Brien and why she spends a lot of time training with Jeanni Metzler. 21:00 About her Ironman 70.3 debut 'when I showed up to Boulder for Ironman 70.3 I had taped all of my gels to the top tube of my bike and apparently you don't do that in a 70.3 race. Apparently on the broadcast they were counting the gels I had taken because they could see the electric tape.' 27:20 I don't think I had expectations for this year. I was just focussing on one thing at a time, but the Olympics was the thing I wanted to do the best in, and I didn't so that has a bit of a dark cloud over it, but I was able to learn from it and I definitely don't want to make the same mistakes again. I am bummed about that. I don't want to make the same mistake twice. 30:20 Why she watches as much triathlon as she can 'I think I have watched every single World Championship Series race since 2009. I love watching the races I haven't been in and the ones I have been in and I think I learn more from watching them than racing them sometimes. I only learnt about triathlon in 2013 and I watched the races to learn about the sport as a whole. When I was a Junior I watched them to learn about the racing and now it's more about learning about my competitors and how the races pan out. 35:00 Her reaction when she found out she would be racing against Daniela Ryf and Teresa Adam at the Collins Cup. I had nothing to lose. But you can't say you're not scared lining up against Daniela Ryf, but it was also a huge honour lining up against her. "To be able to race her is so neat, I was just excited and grateful for the opportunity." 39:40 I felt bad for Daniela at the Collins Cup. I was just waiting for her to come past me. I went out way too hard on the bike and I wanted her to pass me because I wanted to see just how fast she goes, but hopefully some day that will happen. I still want to be better because I still made mistakes. 43:00 How she developed a competitive side with her brother when they were kids. 47:00 Why she is still trying to get better at switching off a bit and why it was easier to switch off from triathlon when she was University. Also this week... 57:00 GB Paratriathlete Fran Brown talks us through her 4th place finish at the Tokyo Paralympics. "It wasn't quite what I had planned." World class triathlete Paula Findlay's journey into the sport of triathlon began first as a swimmer which she been doing since she was 10 years old. Paula won the junior and senior national championships in 2008. She took another major step forward in 2009 when she finished third at the Under-23 World Championships. In 2010, Paula shocked the world becoming the first Canadian triathlete to win a World Championship Series event -- on the now-famous Hyde Park course in London, England. Paula at the time was just turned 21 and she was ranked No. 1 in the world. From late June 2011 through to the Olympics in London and most of 2013, a nagging hip injury limited Findlay to just five events, one of which she did not start, another of which she did not finish, and a disappointing performance at the London Olympics. A healthy Findlay is back to elite racing with some impressive results in both half iron man and iron man distance triathlons. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/dr-greg-wells/support

Since 2010, Gwen Jorgensen has been known as a top female athlete in triathlon after being named USA Triathlon's Rookie of the Year. She placed 2nd in the 2011 World Championship Series in London, earning a spot on the 2012 USA Olympic triathlon team.  In the following years, she wracked up countless podium finishes in the World Triathlon Series before winning Gold at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio.  She had a baby in early 2017 and later in the year, Jorgensen announced she'd be retiring from triathlon and focusing on marathon running -- with an aim to win Olympic gold in Tokyo 2020. On today's episode of the Triathlon Taren podcast, we talk to Gwen and her partner Patrick Lemieux (with some commentary from their son Stanley) about Gwen's transition out of triathlon and into running, her laser focus on Olympic gold, and how Taren put his foot in his mouth on his YouTube channel when Gwen first announced she was moving to marathon running. Overwatch Removing Any Mention of Starcraft from D.Va’s History

The Game of Nerds Podcast

Over the course of a couple of tweets, Michael Chu, Lead Story Developer for Overwatch,  has confused most of Overwatch's fanbase due to a lore discrepancy. According to him, D.Va isn't specifically a StarCraft pro gamer, only a pro gamer in general. This clashes with what literally everyone who pays attention to the lore has known from day one, but Chu waves it away as "a common misconception." Yeah, common. Common among the whole world, including Jeff Kaplan. In a recent Forbes interview, the creator of Overwatch himself stated that, "We have D.Va as a StarCraft pro." In case you're not caught up on Overwatch lore, here's the rundown: In the near future, humanity succeeded in creating sentient robots called Omnics. Unfortunately for them, Omnics immediately turned around and rose up against the humans that couldn't decide whether they were tools or people. In a move reminiscent of Pacific Rim, a kaiju-like Omnic emerged from the depths of the ocean off the coast of South Korea and began attacking. The military managed to repel the gigantic Omnic, but unfortunately it wasn't destroyed, merely forced back into the depths. After analyzing the battles it'd been in, it adapted to the techniques and strategies the military used and rose once again a few years later, ready to fight again. Up until one of those battles, the South Korean military had been using remote-controlled battle robots called MEKAs to combat the threat. However, one of the Omnic's adaptations was a signal jammer, rendering the 'remote' part of that useless. The military was forced to use piloted MEKAs, but they didn't have anybody within their ranks with the needed reflexes. So they turned to the pro gamers. D.Va was specifically stated to be the most elite StarCraft player in the world, rising to the top spot at the age of 16 and remaining undefeated in all competitions for the next three years. No other games are ever mentioned, and so it was assumed that StarCraft was her specialty. In fact, her "Raising my APM!" voice-line is a reference to the 'actions per minute' mechanic of the StarCraft series, basically determining how many actions a person can take per turn. Until recently, D.Va even had a page on StarCraft's World Championship Series website. The WCS is a place where bios of all the top players for StarCraft can be found, so the fact that D.Va's page specifically stated that "at the age of 16, [she] became the #1 ranked player in the world and proceeded to go undefeated for the next three years in all competitions," is a pretty clear indication that she was a pro StarCraft gamer. It also stated that she toured around the world for exhibitions and competitions, as using the Wayback machine to view the page can show. Unfortunately, that page has now been deleted. Now, since this issue has been brought to people's attention, Michael Chu has taken to the Blizzard forums to clarify further. "Misconception probably wasn't the right way to describe it," he said, "more like something that we haven't clarified properly. I think the best I can do here is give the backstory (har har) on how we got here: Going back to when we announced D.Va as a hero, we had been experimenting with using different methods of teasing new characters. We thought it'd be fun to use the StarCraft WCS site and slip D.Va in as she had a background as a pro gamer (this all happened before she was officially announced). At the time, I actually worried that it would be taken as canon, but I was hoping elements like the fact her preferred race was listed as "random" and the fact she couldn't have competed in the current series would help defray that. In hindsight, yeah... pretty confusing. D.Va is absolutely a world champion professional gamer which was what got her recruited into MEKA in the first place. However her best game wasn't StarCraft (which was what I was attempting to clarify). We imagined that she was most known and specialized in a game ...
