He was fortunate to even have a career, to begin with. Just after he started the sport of Triathlon the High Council for Sports in Spain revealed a cardiac anomaly. That finding led to a six-year battle between him and the sporting administrators in Spain to allow him to race internationally.   Since winning that battle, he has raised the standards of the sport for his entire career. Just as impressively, he's also been able to reinvent himself whenever new pretenders have looked set to take his mantle.   He's a man who has won more Triathlons than anyone else in the history of the sport. A career that has spanned almost two decades with 10 world titles over various distances and formats, including 5 ITU World Championships titles, 2 Ironman 70.3 World Titles, an ITU Long course world title, and an Xterra Off-road world title. Add to that a silver medal at the Olympics.   But he's far more than a champion athlete, he's one of the best men I know. We've lived and shared some epic training sessions together, and battled on the racecourse numerous times. And I'm honored to call him a friend.   Timestamps 2:52 - Interview starts 4.10 - Having a year with set-backs and where things don't go to plan is not new to Javier. He dissects the past 12 months with Greg. 7:38 - With 10 World Titles and an Olympic silver medal, Javier explains how proud he is of his career to date. 11:18 - Teaming up with Coach Dr. Dan Plews shortly after the Olympics, Javier and Greg discuss the deeply personal relationship that exists between athlete and how Dan's coaching has improved his performance. 18:02 - Javier is determined to come back and get healthy for the 2023 event program. Racing is not only about the great times and winning 19:55 - Having a coach with a sport science slant is exactly the difference Javier was searching for. In this episode of The Greg Bennett Show, Greg has a delightful conversation with Javier Gomez-Noya.   Javier is a very special return guest. He was on the show at the start of January in 2020, in episode 4. If you haven't listened, be sure to check it out.   He's a man who has won more Triathlons than anyone else in the history of the sport. A career that has spanned almost two decades with 9 world titles over various distances and formats, including 5 ITU World Championships titles, 2 Ironman 70.3 World Titles, an ITU Long course world title, and an Xterra Off-road world title. Add to that a silver medal at the Olympics.   But he's far more than a champion athlete, he's one of the best men I know. We've lived and shared some epic training sessions together, and battled on the racecourse numerous times. And I'm honored to call him a friend.   It's a privilege to have him back on the show   In this episode, Javier discusses who he thinks is the greatest triathlete of all time and what athletes have forced him to become better. Javier shares his thoughts on the fast bouncy shoes that are now so popular and the improvements in bike technology.   He describes some of his epic training days and shares his biggest meltdown.   The episode concludes with some tips on how to optimize your life and some fun quick-fire questions.   This was simply a really great conversation with an extraordinary man.     Discount Codes and Deals   Athletic Greens - a FREE year supply of Vitamin D AND 5 FREE travel packs with your first purchase by visiting athleticgreens.com/greg   Hyperice - Click https://bit.ly/3jzyFDa for exclusive offers on all Hyperice products or visit at hyperice.com and use the code mentioned in the show   FormSwim Goggles - formswim.com/greg for $15 off - The coupon will be automatically added to the cart. Mark is a 6-time Ironman World Champion and the only male to have won both the ITU World Championships and Ironman World Championships in the same year.  Back in the 80’s Mark was one of the “Big Four” with Dave Scott, Scott Tinley, and Scott Molina.  Apart from not having ‘Scott’ in his name he also did a lot of other things differently.   He ritually took 2-3 month off structured training after each Kona race, followed a different nutrition path to most other athletes (who as Dave Scott explained were mostly on the fashionable at the time, high carb/low-fat diet), and he embraced the spiritual side of health and fitness, hooking up with Huichol Shaman Brant Secunda to prepare for his big races.   Since retiring in 1996 he has continued on the healthy living path.  This is a key focus of our discussion today, particularly in light of the current COVID19 pandemic.  We discuss many subjects, including: Learning patience and discipline through years of swimming The benefits of a simplified training environment Mark delivers a short physiology lesson about how the body uses fat and carbs for fuel Talking MAF - Mark shares his frustrations at how slow MAF running was when he first tried it. Some of these achievements include being a 3x winner of the ITU World Championships, a Pan American Games Gold Medalist, and a dramatic come-from-behind victory at the 1995 Ironman World Championships. In order to have as long of a pro career as she did, she also had to battle through a freak storm window accident, being struck by an 18-wheeler, and thyroid cancer. Kris has been a competitive presence in triathlons since 2001. First as an athlete now as a coach. Kris is currently assisting with the Paratriathlon National Team and is a presenter for the USA Triathlon Coaching Education Department. Between 2010 and 2014 he served as the Official Age Group Coach for Team USA and accompanied them to the ITU World Championships around the globe. Kris is also a co-founder of the Leanda Cave Foundation helping to empower women through triathlon. Kris has coached athletes ranging from professional to first time amateurs. He strives to help people achieve the ultimate balance of family and sport in their lives. Today we lead off by taking about the many “shelter in place” orders and social distancing strategies to help flatten the COVID curve.  Kris shares how he is helping token his athletes focused, motivated and engaged when many upcoming races have been postponed or cancelled, swimming pools and gyms are closed and group training sessions are largely looked down on right now. While our social isolation orders won’t go on forever, some of the strategies he shares can be useful anytime. One Fun fact: Kris is a retired police officer. He shares candidly with me what being an officer meant to him and why he left, and what he took away from that experience that makes him a better triathlon coach. Finally we talk a bit about the Leanda Cave foundation that he is co-founder of. I think you’ll enjoy this chat with Kris.  Here we go. Episode 3: Transcript   Coming Soon... Train hard to race easy! That is Elite Athlete and USAT Level 2 Coach, Andrew Kalley's philosophy when it comes to triathlon. And that’s exactly what he does.  Andrew Kalley has qualified 8x for the ITU World Championship to represent Team USA.  He has 12 Overall Wins, including the NYC Triathlon, Stamford Triathlon, South Beach Triathlon, and the Montauk Triathlon.  Even when faced with a life changing diagnosis that most people would have given up and put training on hold, Andrew’s athletic, winning mindset and inspiring clients kept him going through it all. In 2014 he was diagnosed with Colon Cancer, but his training went on! Even while undergoing chemo, he still qualified for Worlds in 2015 (and was nominated to raise the USA flag at the Opening Ceremony. For the past 11 years, Andrew Kalley has been an elite athlete and triathlon coach for the most impressive tri team in the Northeast. Full Throttle Endurance based in New York City with over 100 members who have won the New York City Triathlon for 10 years since 2007, won the South Beach Triathlon every year since racing it beginning in 2007, and won the USAT National Team Championship 5x including in 2017. Andrew’s name is synonymous with the team.  He is also a personal trainer at my favorite gym and athletic playground, Chelsea Piers Fitness and recently launched his own national triathlon coaching and training company, Kalley Fitness. Today’s episode is a “must download” for all our triathlete listeners but it’s also a very inspiring story about mindset and dedication, even if you aren’t an athlete! Andrew talks about what it means to “train hard” not just literally training but attitude, motivation and dedication. Marni and Andrew sync up about race planning, Zone 2 training (of course) what’s a conversation about triathlon without the famous ZONE 2 convo, right?  Marni and Andrew also sync up about setting race goals, key races, and what fuels him for success! Jordan Rapp, ITU World Champion and Champion Ironman Triathlete joins THE BRINK OF MIDNIGHT PODCAST. A natural athlete, Jordan's diverse athletic journey started as an All-American High School lacrosse goalie, proceeded to rowing for Princeton, and, on hiatus from rowing, finally led to triathlon, where he has been a pro for the last 11 years. Winning several Ironman triathlons and winning the ITU World Championship are some of Jordan's professional highlights, but what's even more incredible is that most of these wins came after an incredible comeback story. On a long training ride, Jordan collided with a car in a hit and run accident, suffered serious injuries, and was left for dead bleeding out in the middle of the road. With the clock ticking and minutes to live, Chief Petty Officer Thomas Sanchez happened to be driving by, stopped and reached inside Jordan's neck to save his life. Jordan's comeback and willingness to work as hard as possible remind us of the best of the human spirit and how amazing things can happen when we look for ways to help each other out.
