Our guest this week - on a pod that you really should subscribe to - has taken it to the extreme, a 66-year-old psychiatrist who has run close to 530 marathons, almost all of those in the past decade. Before we get to him, (2:15) there's the quick recap of my San Diego CA marathon experience, (5:33) and a lesson in losing faith that had the Atlanta Braves proving everyone wrong, being resilient and winning the World Series. And hear my version of "Take Me Out to the Ballgame" before that. (9:40) Dr. Ken Fattman of Springfield MO has been a pacer for close to 225 of the marathons he's run. He talks about that passion for helping others, especially beginner distance runners, and what he does to distract or entertain them. (15:20) How did he get into running and then jump to 500+ marathons? It started with 1 mile. And after his first marathon, he took almost 30 years off until the next one. Through all the self-doubt, he's now proven he can do all things through Christ who gives him strength. Fatherhood is key to his story, (20:42) being a single dad, having adopting a baby boy who grew up to run with dad, averaging a half marathon a week for one year - as a 10 year old! Hear how his son is doing now in the Air Force. (28:10) Dr. Fattman waited until his 50s to get serious about endurance running, a hobby for this doctor that includes eating Little Debbies. He has advice on how to avoid injuries and what surprisingly causes his body to stiffen up. (31:45) Through all the hundreds of races, he finally just ran the Boston Marathon for the 1st time - and literally 1 day after running the 2021 Chicago Marathon! Dr. Fattman has some secrets to how he runs all these back-to-back or week-to-week marathons. He also gives us the finish times he normally paces, a job he volunteers for, to inspire fellow runners to meet their goals. By the numbers, (42:08) his accomplishments seem unbelievable, so we ask why he runs so many marathons, averaging 1 per week - for the past 9 years!! (45:25) There are lessons he's learned and taught along the way about faith, passion, self-improvement, which include certain Bible verses that apply to running and preparation. (48:55) His new goals involve the number 10, as in years. He explains, plus what he wants to do around the world. (50:20) His favorite races are some of the big ones you know, plus ET in Nevada, and an unusual one in 2012 called "The End of the World Marathon." (55:12) Our Parting Gift segment brings some inspiration from Jimmy Buffet, then my closing prayer. Thanks for listening! And please share it with your friends using #RunTheRace podcast. Also, write a quick review about it. For more info, go to www.wtvm.com/podcast/.
This week on the Dingers podcast we welcome Coach Ballgame -- one of the most positive and entertaining baseball coaches you will find. It's Blu-ray time again on the podcast. Erik Childress and Sergio Mims concentrate on just a few studios but a lot of titles including films from a silent film comedian. Sergio goes over some recent musicals released by Warner Archive as well as an Errol Flynn war film. If you ever wanted to see Strother Martin in a horror film, Arrow Video has one for you along with a couple of new 4K titles. One from Dario Argento is there for your Halloween viewing and the other is there to re-evaluate David Lynch's version of the adaptation being hyperbolized to a fault. Is the 1984 Dune as bad as its reputation or does a new sheen make its visuals as impressive as people believe the 2021 version to be? 0:00 - Intro 3:30 – Undercrank (Edward Everett Horton 8 Silent Comedies) 9:10 – Arrow (The Brotherhood of Satan, The Cat O Nine Tails, Dune) 55:08 – Warner Bros. (Mortal Kombat) 1:01:06 – Warner Archive (In the Good Old Summertime, Take Me Out to the Ball Game, Ziegfeld Follies, Objective Burma) 1:45:50 - Outro

Baseball is full of traditions, good or bad, that as a fan, you've got to take in stride if you go to a ballgame. There's singing (the anthem, Take Me Out to the Ballgame), there's strange people in costumes (the Chicken, the Phanatic), there is trickery (keep a decoy ball to throw back if you catch an opponent's HR), and there's more singing if you're team wins. Why do we do these crazy things during a game? Plus, Lars Nootbaar, the Bob Brenley Game (?) and a 1990 Fleer edition of Wax Pack Heroes. ONCE UPON A GENE - EPISODE 095 A Rare Collection- Skin in the Game with Adam Johnson, Nathan Peck and Marni Cartelli There's power in storytelling- for the listener and the storyteller. A Rare Collection is a monthly series featuring three people from the rare disease community, sharing a story with a common theme. Adam Johnson, Nathan Peck and Marni Cartelli share stories of having skin in the game. EPISODE HIGHLIGHTS Adam Johnson, DadVocate Adam made his way through the gates and into his field of dreams- Wrigley Field, home of the Chicago Cubs. He felt at home among forty thousand strangers, all his people coming together in one place, at one time for a common love and in support of a common hope. As the song "Take Me Out to the Ballgame" goes in Wrigleyville, fans root for the Cubs and if they don't win, it's a shame, but through dedication and persistence, Cub fans are still loyal fans through thick and thin. Adam shares that just as the Cubs have had bad days, he's too had bad days since he was diagnosed with a rare disease. Some days it seems he'll never win and some days the wins are among days of painful losses. The Cubs made it to the World Series in 2016 and won their first championship in 108 years. He holds on to hope that he'll step foot back in Wrigley Field with his children one day and that his rare disease will be cured. It's supposed to be hard. If it wasn't, everyone would do it. The hard is what makes it great. In spite of the losses, the victories along the way is what makes the hard great. Nathan Peck, CureVCP Nathan tells a story about being JV basketball in high school, having his front tooth broken off by another player. He was so angry that he threw the broken piece of tooth under the bleachers. But he got back in and finished out practice. Advocacy is about the skin in the game- having dedication, the want and desire to get it done together. Marni Cartelli, CRPS Patient and Advocate Marni credits football with saving her life. Marni was naturally loud as a child and her mom often said if she were the first born, she wouldn't have siblings. Her dad introduced her to football and she loved it. Marni and her husband share their love of football and have gone to an NFL game every year from the year they met until her rare disease symptoms onset. It's been six years since she's been able to carry on that tradition, four years since she tried to kill herself and three and a half years since her husband used her connection to football to help her back from the edge. Marni shares that her disease symptoms started and progressed very quickly. For months, she isolated herself, only seeing her specialists and husband. The disease progressed, leading to deeper depression. Marni's husband pushed to reconnect with her over football and it worked. Sundays eventually became less focused on the losses and treatment costs and all about dropped passes and crazy plays. Rich tips off the hour recapping the amazing ‘Valley Oop' game-winning play for the Suns in their Western Conference Finals Game 2 against the Clippers, and explains why as thrilling as the play on the court was the game became unwatchable because of the lengthy delays for official replay reviews. Rich reacts to the black eye MLB took last night after two embarrassing incidents involving umpires checking pitchers for foreign substances that resulted in a near brawl between Nationals' ace Max Scherzer and Phillies manager Joe Girardi, along with A's reliever Sergio Romo dropping his pants when he was checked by an ump. Rich wraps up the hour ranting against the changes baseball has seen over the years which leads Chris Brockman to come up with new lyrics for ‘Take Me Out to the Ballgame.'
