The End of Money and the Future of Civilization (Chelsea Green 2009) remains as relevant and timely today as it was when first published. Unfortunately, bound copies have been out of print for the past several years, but the Kindle edition can still be downloaded from Amazon and there is an active market for used copies. Having recently had the rights reverted to me by my publisher, I have been considering republishing a revised and expanded edition of the book in serial form on my website. I will add some material that relates to recent developments like Bitcoin, blockchain, cryptocurrencies and smart contracts that will elaborate and expand upon what I've said in my previously published articles, Bitcoin, Blockchain, and the end of money as we've known it (2022) (https://beyondmoney.net/bitcoin-blockchain-and-the-end-of-money-as-weve-known-it/), and Bitcoin, Blockchain Technology, and Crypto-Currency (2016) (https://beyondmoney.net/2016/04/25/bitcoin-blockchain-technology-and-crypto-currency/). Beyond the Matrix with Patricia Cori, a discussion with Tom Greco, originally aired Oct. 7, 2020 (during Covid-lockdowns): "We all know the global economic situation is on the brink of collapse. It is an unsustainable system, one that is barely standing - whether it is deliberately being taken down, or whether it is simply crashing with resounding finality. As governments rush to shore it up, we are currently, as my guest, economist Thomas Greco declared in this probing interview, in an inflationary economy AND a depression, brought about also by the "health situation" that has all but shut down societies worldwide. What will replace the dying economic matrix? Can we really create sustainable local, self-governing communities with our own people-based economies? Fascinating conversation...There's much to be learned here - so do your best to tune in to the end! Thomas H. Greco, Jr. is an educator, author, and consultant dedicated to economic equity, social justice, and community empowerment. He specializes in the design and implementation of private and community currencies and mutual credit clearing networks with a vision to creating sustainable local communities and healthy societal economies. Renowned International author, Patricia shares information on everything from health and well-being to philosophy, and current events, with an eye to informing and empowering her audience with motivational messages for individual and planetary healing, well-being, and success. Format is stream of consciousness directly, and also includes interviews with other new thought, alternative thinkers."
BeyondMoney.net Todd Boyle is a man with a very interesting and unusual life story. In this episode, he candidly tells us about how he grew up in a large Catholic family; served a brief stint in the US navy but didn’t like it and managed to get discharged; got involved for a time in the drug scene; went to college and then worked for many years as a successful certified public accountant. He eventually renounced that career in favor of full time activism to promote the causes of peace and justice. He has been a staunch opponent of the war in Afghanistan and the multiple covert and violent interventions by US forces in countries around the world, and in recent years he has been a tireless advocate for the homeless right here in America. Todd’s ideas for ending homelessness, and 50 IDEAS for Cheaper Housing are listed here. Listen in as we discuss some of the main contemporary issues and Todd’s ideas about how to get through the present deepening crisis with his own version of “walking away” (https://beyondmoney.net/2020/07/27/walking-away-from-the-new-old-world-order-into-the-old-new-world-order-part-i/). BeyondMoney.net The concept of the “credit commons” is something articulated at length in Thomas Greco’s 2009 book The End of Money and the Future of Civilization, along with a thorough description of how it can be reclaimed from monopoly control. In November of 2010, the International Commons Conference: Constructing a Commons Based Policy Platform Economy was sponsored by the Heinrich Böll Foundation, in Berlin, Germany. In this six-minute presentation, Greco points out that credit is a crucial aspect of “the commons” which has been generally overlooked. Reclaiming it is crucial to any attempt to promote social justice, economic equity, democratic government and a world that works for everyone. This group conversation, sponsored by the Praxis Peace Institute, was recorded online April 10, 2020. It covers such critical questions as: What is the essence of money? What are the functions of money? Where does money come from? How does money enter the economy? Who controls the issuance and flow of money? Why does total debt in the world keep growing? Is the system of money, banking, and finance stable, fair, sustainable? Are there better ways to “do” money? Why have local currencies not been more successful? Are there any success stories? Is there a “magic formula” for making an alternative money system work? It continues with a discussion of the history of local currency efforts in Sonoma County, California and a description of straight forward approaches to creating local liquidity that is independent of banks and conventional money.
This is based on a presentation given by Thomas H. Greco, Jr. In November of 2009, at the conference on Michigan's Future Energy, Economy & Environment, held at Crystal Mountain Resort in Thompsonville, Michigan. The recordings of that presentation have been augmented and adapted by Ken Freeman. This presentation is a comprehensive description of the "what" and "how" of transcending the political fiat money regime, and building a new equitable system of value exchange, and more than 10 years after the fact, it is more relevant than ever. BBX is one of the scores of commercial trade exchanges operating around the world today that provide their businesses customers with a way of trading with each other without the need to use conventional money. They do this by maintaining a ledger of member accounts on which credits from sales offset debits from purchases in a process called credit clearing. Together, the scores of trade exchanges operating around the world enable moneyless trades worth several billions of dollars annually. www.BeyondMoney.net www.BeyondMoneyPodcast.com beyondmoneypodcast@gmail.com In this episode, we explore the evolution of the commercial trade exchange industry, which over the past 50 years has proven the workability of credit clearing as a way of doing business without the need for money payment. Ron Whitney, who has long been at the center of this industry, shares his knowledge and insights about its current challenges, prospects, and opportunities, including a description of the benefits of trade exchange membership and the increasing use of Universal Currency (UC) to enable purchases and sales over an extended trade exchange network. Ron Whitney is the President and CEO of IRTA, the International Reciprocal Trade Association, which is the premier trade association of, and advocate for, the commercial trade exchange industry. Prior to assuming the leadership of IRTA in 2007, Ron founded and ran his own exchange for 15 years, and during his twelve year tenure as head of IRTA, Ron has managed to build up the association membership from 32 to about 100 today. Ron also has a BA from George Washington University and a JD from the Delaware Law School of Widener University. Often referred to as “barter exchanges,” the scores of commercial trade exchanges operating around the world today provide their member businesses with a way of trading with each other without the need to use conventional money. They do this by maintaining a ledger of member accounts on which credits from sales offset debits from purchases in a process called “credit clearing.” Together, the scores of trade exchanges operating around the world enable moneyless trades worth several billions of dollars annually. In this premier episode of Beyond Money Podcast, Thomas Greco discusses what money is, how it's "created", what is problematic and dysfunctional about the present money system, and what can be done to decentralize and democratize the way we pay for goods and services. This is an exciting hour, packed with a condensed history of banking and money creation, from the founding of the Bank of England, to the Age of Jackson, and our current era of the Federal Reserve System and the global network of central banks. Taking inspiration from the likes of John Kenneth Galbraith and E.C. Riegel, Greco describes how we the people can take back our money power, escape the domination by the global monetary elites, and restore true democracy by the improvement and proliferation of proven mechanisms of credit allocation and management. www.beyondmoneypodcast.com E.C.
