Matthew Garcia has been in jail for 26 years for second-degree felony murder. He didn't even have a gun, yet he has a life sentence. As an adopted child from North Philadelphia, Matthew has turned his life around in remarkable ways. He is a published author with a book called "Raw Reflections" and graduated with college courses from Villanova, St. Joseph's, Bryn Mawr, and Widener University. Matthew also created his own mentoring program called the Real Rap Program and has scholarships for at-risk youth with Councilman Kenyatta Johnson. Despite these achievements, he remains behind bars due to Pennsylvania's harsh felony murder law. This petition seeks to change the felony murder law in Pennsylvania to make lifers like Matthew eligible for parole. His case shares similarities with Derek Lee's case that the PA Supreme Court is ready to rule on, including 17 amicus briefs filed on behalf of individuals like him. Please support Matthew Garcia by signing this petition and advocating for fairer sentencing laws in Pennsylvania! If you would like to help Matthew out, the petition is below https://www.change.org/p/change-pennsylvania-s-felony-murder-law-to-allow-parole-for-lifers?recruiter=1338786924&recruited_by_id=1f98e0d0-13f6-11ef-8e42-110cd3ef6ae3&utm_source=share_petition&utm_campaign=petition_dashboard&utm_medium=copylink#FREEMATTHEWGARCIA

Profitable Entity Structures with Alex Langan In this episode of The Profit Answer Man, we sit down with Alexander Langan, an attorney and financial advisor who brings a unique perspective to wealth management and strategic financial planning. As the Chief Investment Officer of Langan Financial Group, Alex is well-versed in helping business owners build sustainable financial strategies. Our conversation covers the importance of aligning financial, tax, and legal strategies, the impact of business entity structures on profitability, and how business owners can adopt a Profit First mindset—even if they don't realize they're already doing it. If you're looking for ways to improve your business's financial health, ensure your advisors are working together effectively, and make smarter financial decisions, this episode is for you. In This Episode, You'll Learn: Why business owners need a cohesive financial team consisting of a CPA, attorney, financial planner, and a business strategist. How entity structures impact tax savings and long-term financial growth. The hidden financial pitfalls that could be draining your profitability. Why a Profit First approach can simplify financial management—even if you don't formally follow the system. How to set up multiple bank accounts to manage cash flow more effectively. How financial advisors and business strategists can work together to maximize your bottom line. Key Takeaways: Your Business Needs a Financial Dream Team. Alex emphasizes that business owners should have a CPA, attorney, financial planner, and profit coach who communicate regularly. Without alignment, owners can end up making costly decisions—like structuring their business in a way that benefits their CPA or attorney but hurts their long-term wealth. Entity Structures Can Make or Break Your Finances. Choosing the right business entity isn't just a legal decision; it's a profitability decision. Financial Planning Isn't Just About Investments. Most business owners think of a financial advisor as someone who just manages stocks and retirement funds. But Alex brings a broader perspective—financial planning should start at the business level. Optimizing tax strategies, structuring cash flow, and ensuring liquidity in business operations are just as important as planning for personal wealth. Profit First Is a Mindset, Not Just a System. While Alex wasn't formally using Profit First, he realized he was already following many of its principles. Even if you're not implementing Profit First exactly as written, adopting a cash flow allocation strategy ensures you're setting aside money for taxes, profit, and future growth before spending. Simplicity Wins When Managing Finances. A complicated financial plan is one that doesn't get followed. Whether it's investing, tax strategies, or cash flow management, the simpler the system, the more effective it is. Guest Bio: Alex Langan is the Chief Investment Officer of Langan Financial Group, a leading financial planning and wealth management firm. As a second-generation leader in the family business, Alex specializes in strategic investments, business finance, and wealth-building strategies. Beyond his work in financial planning, Alex is also a Board Member for multiple nonprofits and is passionate about helping business owners build long-term financial success. Conclusion: If you're a business owner struggling to connect the dots between accounting, legal strategy, financial planning, and business growth, this episode is a must-listen. Widener University Commonwealth Law School is launching a professional closet, a donation-based initiative providing free professional attire to law students. The initiative was launched by students involved in Phi Alpha Delta. The students realized other schools had professional closets, and it was something they needed too. So students reached out to the Dean of Career Advising to get it started. “She was very gracious that we were going to actually put it into form. So she advised us, you know, start reaching out to maybe like other, you know, the local bar association and just other outlets that maybe we can get donations from to go beyond just Weidner itself. So we took it from there and it's been really exciting to see it, you know, now coming to the ribbon cutting and kind of how it's built the community, “said Kira Meager, student at Widener university Commonwealth Law School. This initiative is especially significant as 90% of our 2024 entering class are first-generation law school students, and 32% are first-generation college graduates. With 170 incoming students, this resource will ensure that students have access to the professional attire they need for interviews, external external events, and networking events. “You know, when we initially came up with this idea, I mean, we kind of understood that so many of our professors make it clear that professional attire is a requirement of the profession. Whether you're in a courtroom, you're in an office. When you're whether you're arbitrating, I mean, a lawyer has to represent this kind of like position of being official and representing the law and in a respectful manner. And I think when it came to us with this idea, you just said, you know, not everybody has the means off the bat to have like a suit or a nice dress for these kind of things. But everyone is capable of it if they're given those tools. That's what we can provide. The students of the Commonwealth that don't have that, “said McFadden. Donations of gently used professional clothing can be dropped off at the Student Organization Building on-campus or at the Dauphin County Bar Association located at 213 N. Front Street, Harrisburg, PA between 9 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. on weekdays. Support WITF: https://www.witf.org/support/give-now/See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Content Disclaimer: This episode contains discussions about intimate partner violence that some listeners may find disturbing or difficult to hear. This episode marks the second part of our two-part series on intimate partner violence (IPV). In our previous episode, we heard from Kalena Brown, an IPV survivor who shared her journey of overcoming immense challenges and using her voice to educate and support others. In this episode, we dive deeper into the topic with Lizz Tooher, RN, MPH and Mac Taylor, who reference Kalena's story as they discuss IPV in Philadelphia and beyond. Lizz Tooher is a public health nurse and the Senior Director of Child Health and Education at the National Nurse-Led Care Consortium (NNCC), working closely with families raising children under five years old. Mac Taylor is a Paralegal with the Health Education and Legal Assistance Project (HELP MLP) at Widener University, collaborating with NNCC to support families enrolled in home visiting programs across Philadelphia. Home visitors, like those in the Mabel Morris Family Home Visit program, play a crucial role in screening for IPV and providing support to survivors. It's essential to recognize that IPV extends beyond physical violence, impacting survivors psychologically, emotionally, and financially. Lizz and Mac share their insights into the challenges faced by survivors, the importance of building trust and community connections, and the systemic barriers to accessing resources. Through their discussion, they shed light on the complexities of IPV and advocate for improved support systems. Join us as we explore the multifaceted nature of intimate partner violence and the role of healthcare providers and communities in addressing this critical issue.

I talk quite a bit on this podcast about "the expert trap" and how so many of us get stuck teaching and training and don't step into thought leadership. This applies not only to those of us who are entrepreneurs, but of course to all the academics out there as well (hand raised!). This episode is a treasure trove of insights for anyone passionate about making a difference through their work, particularly in academia or any field where expertise is a given, but thought leadership can make an even bigger impact. Did you know the United States Supreme Court has agreed to hear four cases pertaining to social media this term? One of the major issues is whether or not an elected official has the authority to limit speech on social media accounts by blocking critical comments pertaining to their work in office. We know government cannot prohibit your speech, but are elected officials required to permit all comments on their official pages, or can they censor them? What about their personal pages? Can the government pressure social media companies to take down posts the government seems “misinformation”? There's a lot to unpack with these various cases so we are delighted to welcome Michael Dimino, Professor of Law at Widener University's Commonwealth Law School for this very timely discussion.

There's not much people in the United States seem to agree on these days. That every American child deserves a quality education is probably one of the few exceptions. Where things get dicey, though, is how to pursue this goal. The role that school vouchers should or shouldn't play in the solution falls right at the center of the debate. What are vouchers? Why have they become such a politicized, hot-button issue? Dr. Zora M. Wolfe is the Associate Dean for the College of Health and Human Services at Widener University. She's also the Director, K-12 Educational Leadership & Instructional Technology, and goes beyond vouchers to look at other big picture issues affecting education in the United States. When we give up on our students, especially those in public schools, we relinquish our collective responsibility as stewards of a thriving democracy. After all, knowledge is power. And in a democracy, knowledge is also a birthright. Defunding our public schools, demonizing public school teachers, diverting public funding to private and religious institutions, deprives our kids — soon to be adults — of that power, and assigns to them less than first-class citizenship. To some highly-motivated (and well-funded) members of American society, that's precisely what would make America great again. Thus, from local school boards to the highest court in the land, public education is under attack. What's happening on the ground and in the courts, and what can we all do moving forward, to prevent a theocratic takeover of our secular schools? In our special Back To School episode we talk with Liz Cavell (Staff/Board member of the Freedom from Religion Foundation and co-host of the “We Dissent” podcast); Dan Mach (Director, ACLU Program on Freedom of Religion and Belief); and, for a local perspective, Chris Ullery, Extremism and Social Justice Reporter for the USA Today Network in PA). Thanks for listening! Now follow us on Twitter, Instagram, Facebook and Threads. And become a Patreon supporter at www.podcastunreasonable.com. It's a small price to pay to keep America from becoming a theocracy, dontchya think?
The College Essay Guy Podcast: A Practical Guide to College Admissions
In this episode we're talking about the Supreme Court's recent decision to strike down race-conscious admission and what the implications might be for colleges, students applying to those colleges, and the counselors who advise them. And what better person to talk about it with than Jay Rosner, whose entire career has been devoted to the intersection of law and college admissions. This is the first in a series where we'll be exploring the impacts of the SCOTUS decision from a variety of perspectives. Jay Rosner and I get into: What the affirmative action ruling practically means How it might impact college admissions, including for underrepresented students We address some students' fears about whether or not they should mention their race, or share experiences directly related to their race or culture in their college applications I ask Jay: “Who is the burden on here—students or the colleges themselves?” We also talked about how counselors should advise students For those of you who have never met Jay: As the Executive Director of The Princeton Review Foundation, he has developed programs jointly with such organizations as the NAACP, the Hispanic Scholarship Fund, College and Graduate Horizons (serving Native American students) and the Asian Pacific Fund. Jay's career has combined education and law, with an emphasis on student advocacy. He has testified before state legislative committees in California, Texas, Illinois and New Jersey, and as an expert witness in cases involving testing. Before attending law school, Jay was a public high school math teacher. Jay holds a BA from the University of Pennsylvania, a JD from Widener University, and is the proud father of two grown daughters. Play-by-play: [0:53] Intro [1:30] Who is Jay Rosner? [2:25] A brief history of race-conscious admission [4:52] Why is the Supreme Court decision such a big deal? [6:22] What does the ruling actually mean? [7:31] What colleges can and can't consider after the ruling related to race [9:49] How might diversity and inclusivity be affected on college campuses? [13:00] Should students even mention race at all in their applications? [15:39] Is the burden really on the students or on the colleges? [17:20] How can students speak to the ways race has impacted their lives? [18:50] Advice to counselors on guiding students on their college applications [21:38] Do colleges still want to enroll a diverse population of students? [23:36] What might colleges learn from the University of California, where race-conscious admission was banned in 1996? [26:45] Jay's thoughts about and hopes for the future [28:28] What are folks not talking about? [31:03] Final takeaways for students and counselors Resources: Example of How to Explain (Briefly) Context on Your Testing in the Additional Info Section of Your Common App AP Physics I I was the first student at my school to ever pass the AP Physics I exam. There were two issues during the test: 1) the test began late because the previous test (AP Spanish) ran long and 2) during the AP Physics I exam, the fire alarms went off and continued for about an hour (the second half of the test). Unfortunately, this was the only time the test was offered and I was nonetheless proud of my score. Highest SAT Score in My Class Scored a 1910 on old SAT (570 CR, 730 Math, 610 WR), which was the highest overall test score in my grade.
