Jake Thomas began his career in the fitness industry immediately after college. With a background in athletic training and a strong passion for working with kids and training athletes, he joined Forward Fitness and Parisi Speed School. Here he tells the story of how he went from Fitness Manager to proud Owner! After gaining valuable experience, he moved on to MVP Sports Clubs in Michigan, where he spent five years overseeing sports performance programs within the clubs. Wanting to return home, he found Razor Sharp Fitness and joined as the fitness director in 2013. Within a year, he was promoted to the role of General Manager, which he held for eight and a half successful years. He takes us through his journey of inquiring about the future plans of the business owners and their gradual inclination towards selling the building and the business. It's a great story of curiosity, candid conversations, and unexpected opportunities. There's also an important takeaway regarding the involvement of Jacob in lease agreement negotiations, where he had the chance to understand the impact on profitability and manage the business effectively. He also strongly highlights the importance of seeking professional advice and hiring a lawyer to navigate unfamiliar territory. Jacob's story provides tons of valuable advice (and should be required listening!) for anyone thinking about striking out on their own. On having the owners "open up the books" he states, "After about 5 or 6 years, they really opened the books to me. We had year end discussions of what that looked like, but it really was the stepping stone in regards to . . . building the trust between us. It was probably the number one starting point for me to make the negotiations go much smoother." Some key moments: Lease discussions informed by inside information; hired lawyer to understand lease terms. Attitude, honesty, dedication, great questions asked. Hired CPA, discussed acquisition numbers with owners. Improved trust and decision-making with owners. Club owner empowers team to grow people. Let go of personal feelings in decisions. A few key takeaways: Jacob recounts his conversation with the owners of Razor Sharp Fitness about their future plans and the potential sale of the building and business. He expresses his initial hesitation about becoming an owner but shows interest in understanding the process. Pete raises a question about the involvement of Jacob in lease agreement discussions and potential changes to maximize the value of the real estate. Jacob mentions his awareness of other lease agreements in the building and his need to hire a lawyer (as well as bring on a new CPA) to understand the new lease agreement. In this week's podcast episode, my podcast guest is Mark Seeto. Like most kids growing up in the Australian bush, Mark started playing sports as soon as he could. Fast forward to 2008, after years of working in Sales, Customer Service and Finance in Australia, the UK and Canada, as well as his dedicated Pilates practice, he knew he needed to start a career in something he felt truly passionate about and connected to. So he packed up and flew home to launch his career as a Personal Trainer at Virgin Active Frenchs Forest in early 2009. Understanding that the mechanics of movement is important, but learning that mindset, motivation and the power of relationships is what truly creates sustainable change, led Mark to discovering his own personal Yoga practice in 2010. In 2011 Mark became a Fitness Manager, and his passion for leadership and mentorship was born. He is now the Global Head of Yoga and Pilates for Virgin Active, not only aiming to grow participation in Yoga and Pilates across the globe, but supporting the growth and development of those who chose a career in these two healthful disciplines. He is also host of the Virgin Active Minds Podcast, speaking to global experts in the health and wellbeing world, including Sir Richard Branson himself. Derek Jameson: "I began coaching clients in 2007 with 24 hour Fitness and certified through NASM (National Academy of Sports Medicine). As the Fitness Manager, Event Coordinator, and Coach with The Phoenix Effect Los Angeles, I was able to assist the physical and mental well being of thousands via print, television, and such live events as Propel Lab's yearly fitness and music festival. This transformed into a deeper coaching style with life coaching and spiritual development. My aim is to combine science with spirituality, as it is my belief they are two expressions of the same. Bringing it into balance is the key. As a certified Law of Attraction Coach, I apply this and many other Universal Laws, with my life/soul coaching program. I provide my clients with the skills on attracting everything they desire and teach them how to release resistance and blocks in all areas of their lives. I am a certified QHHT Practitioner by the Quantum Healing Hypnosis Academy. Having studied under Dolores Cannon's method, I take clients into their "past" lives to uncover their life purpose themes and to clear any traumas that have carried over into this lifetime. These sessions are known to bring miraculous and instantaneous healing and just simply fun!" Margaret, Todd and Claire speak with Caterina Moda, plus size model and Instagram Influencer, and Leslie Ann Spicer, fascial stretch therapist. We chatted with Caterina about her rise as a body-positive role model and brand influencer, when so many young women struggle with body issues. Leslie talked about how the COVID-19 pandemic interrupted her business, and how she pivoted to online services. Caterina's Bio: Born in Mississauga, Ontario, I have been modeling since 2013. My modelling collaborations include retail, design, editorial, print and runway. Born in an Italian family, fashion and style have always been a huge part of my upbringing, and modelling, for me, is a natural extension of that culture. I love fashion, networking and anything that elevates the curvy woman. Leslie's Bio: passion lay in sport and exercise. I excelled at sports in high school and as the years passed, I became increasingly interested in learning about optimal fitness and the physical skills needed to improve athletic performance. I wanted to know how the body worked and the science behind it. My journey started at the University of Western Ontario, where I received my Bachelor of Arts degree in Kinesiology. In my four years at Western, I learned the core principles of anatomy, physiology and biomechanics of the body. Shortly after, I attended teacher’s college at the University of Toronto and completed a Bachelor of Education in Physical & Health Education. I also attained my canfitpro certification during this time, allowing me to work as a personal trainer in Canada. In 2008, I was hired as a personal trainer at a prominent fitness club and quickly advanced into the role of Fitness Manager where my responsibilities included hiring and developing new personal trainers as well as continuing to maintain a personal training clientele. Special Guest: Malcolm McPhail Group CEO of Life Leisure and Danny Drayson, Fitness Manager of Life Leisure Join us as we discuss the benefits of focusing on ‘preferred behaviours’ as a staff development tool. We will also look at why over-emphasis on traditional job descriptions could be de-motivating for employees, and possibly holding back your next star staff member. Malcolm McPhail firmly believes that helping staff to be “their personal best” is one of the most powerful employee engagement tools there is. So much so that on joining Life Leisure as CEO, he scrapped job descriptions and traditional evaluations in favour of a model where staff are recognised and rewarded for demonstrating principles that embody Life Leisure’s ethos. Through this behaviour programme any staff member, at any level, can become a company champion and be part of steering groups on business development areas. It’s an approach that saw our second guest, Danny Drayson, go from having no career prospects to being named the UK fitness industry’s outstanding individual of the year in 2017. Host: Jo Dodds
David O'Brien is Fitness Manager & Co-Founder of 5th Element Wellness in Melbourne. "One thing has really resonated with me over the last few years, and that is our constant search for a mono therapy to being fit and healthy. Yogi's, bodybuilders, it seems to be a one-method solution. Would it not seem more sensible to apply the approach that each method has its obvious benefits, and in fact actually complement each other perfectly? I have believed for many years now that a more rounded approach is needed in the fitness industry. Is training like a maniac 6 days a week the answer for everyone? For some people it may be. However, we need to stop putting everybody into the same one solution box. Do some people need to increase lean muscle mass? More than likely! Do some people need to implement stress-reducing measures into their lifestyle? Probably! However, one approach for one particular individual may not be the right approach for another. We believe balance is the key. Lean muscle increase, stress management, detoxification, nourishing foods, and flexibility help achieve optimal results. Take one of these out, and it seems that something suffers as a consequence. Focus on all combined and optimal health can be achieved." 5th Element Wellness; Website: https://www.5ew.com.au/ Facebook: www.facebook.com/5thElementWellness/ Instagram: www.instagram.com/5elementwellness/?hl=en Brooklet Springs Farm www.brookletsprings.farm/ SPONSOR: waiket0.pruvitnow.com/ Instagram www.instagram.com/stagvision/ Instagram www.instagram.com/stagryan/ Twitter twitter.com/stagryan Snapchat @stagryan Facebook www.facebook.com/WaiKeto/ Blog stagryan.com/

There has been a lot of media buzz in the last few weeks surrounding Jordan McNair, a 19-year-old University of Maryland football player, who died two weeks after being hospitalized following a team work out on May 29th of this year, and for good reason. To shed light on this tragedy, I decided to have my friend David Otey on as this week's featured guest. David is a Strength and Conditioning specialist based out of New York City. David is the 2015 Fitness Manager of the Year for Equinox and has been featured in several major fitness publications on the topics of strength and Conditioning. David recently wrote an article titled The Fine Line Between Building Toughness & Being Destructive after several current University of Maryland football players and people close to the team described a toxic coaching culture under head coach DJ Durkin and Strength and Conditioning Coach Rick Court before offensive lineman Jordan McNair's death (ESPN.COM). To be fair, in this episode we are discussing issues within the Maryland football program which are largely allegations at this point, with many conflicting reports. Regardless, a young man lost his life in pursuit of playing a game, which he probably loved at some point in his life. When I first started this podcast, I sought out to be the voice for athletes who weren't as lucky as me and I would be doing Jordan and his family a disservice if I remained silent on the incident. Jordan McNair lost his life after suffering from exertional heat stroke. If you remember back a couple of years I posted a series of episodes with the experts from the Korey Stringer Institute where we discussed everything there is to know about illness. After we here from David, you will hear an excerpt from Episode 38 with Dr. Douglas Casa, CEO of the Korey Stringer Institute and both a survivor and an expert on exertional heat stroke. In this part of the episode, we learn about the signs, symptoms and treatments for exertional heat stroke.

"I truly believe in earning your stripes and working all the positions you can—being the first one to put up your hand and say, ‘I’ll take on that initiative. I’ll take on that new responsibility,’ and not expect anything in return… It gives you more substance as a leader. When you’ve worked every position and you say to an employee, ‘I need you to clean this toilet,’ and they know that you’ve done that before and you’ll do it again, there’s a built-in respect.” Tonya Jacobs is the COO of Mercedes Club New York, a luxury health and fitness oasis boasting an elite personal training staff and unparalleled member service.
