He has a successful and fascinating YouTube channel, and has produced several modern editions of 18th and 19th century fencing and self defence sources, as well as being the author of The Gladiatory Art: The Lives, Writings, & Techniques of the Eighteenth Century Stage Gladiators. In our conversation we talk about how Ben got interested in the physical culture of the 19th century, and how his experience doing historical fencing made him realise that the people who designed exercises and physical training in the past had some insights that we are lacking in modern sports culture. Modern fitness is too specialised, whereas in the 19th century there was a much greater focus on holistic health, which would be beneficial to us today. Ben talks about his favourite piece of equipment, the Indian club, and the difference between historical Indian clubs and the modern varieties; they are designed with different ways of swinging in mind. He also explains the origins of the push up, and how you should do the original Swedish version. Another of Ben's research interests is Colonel Monstery, and this is a link to the book Ben wrote to verify Monstery's wild claims about how many duels he won and the combats he fought: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Self-Defense-Gentlemen-Ladies-Nineteenth-Century-Quarterstaff/dp/1583948686 https://www.amazon.com/Self-Defense-Gentlemen-Ladies-Nineteenth-Century-Quarterstaff/dp/1583948686 We go on to discuss the largely forgotten stage gladiators of the 18th century, who were men and women who fought with sharp swords (amongst other weapons) on stage, for real. Often resulting in hideous injuries, disembowelling, and even death. More links: One of Ben's mentors is Harry Allick, and here you can see his YouTube videos of club swinging: https://www.youtube.com/@lakelandviewer See Ben's fascinating videos on his YouTube channel here: https://www.youtube.com/@PhysicalCultureHistorians Early in the interview we mention the Jared Kirby episode. Here's the link: https://swordschool.shop/blogs/podcast/episode-165-sword-geekery-and-stunts-with-jared-kirby Ben mentions an essay by a Turner who is ranting against the trend toward specialization and production of champions in fitness and sport. We can't find the essay, but we have included a link to the following video Ben did, in which he shows and reads from the article extensively (begins around time code 7:47): https://youtu.be/oK__aaBLM78?si=0Q7kWhmXEvISTnS9 And finally! Hey, Hi, Hello, this is the History Wizard and welcome back for Day 17 of Have a Day w/ The History Wizard. Thank you to everyone who tuned in for Day 16 last week, and especially thank you to everyone who rated and/or reviewed the podcast. I hope you all learned something last week and I hope the same for this week. We're going to do something different this week. We've been learning about some, frankly depressing things. War, genocide, slaughter, ethnic tensions and cleansings. These are all important things to be learning about. Especially the ones that are happening in the world right now. But it is always important to remember to take care of ourselves. We need to take some time to breathe and remember that we are human beings with thoughts and feelings and that we require rest or we will, quite simply, die. So today, after our visit to the Alchemist's Table, we are going to learn about the history of juggling! Today's libation is called Herb Garden. It's 1 oz each of gin, elderflower liquor, and jagermeister. 2 splashes each of Orleans and Cardamom bitters, and a splash of lavender simple syrup. Shake well and strain into a glass with muddled mint. Top with lemonade and enjoy! So! Now onto the juggling. First let's get the obvious out of the way. What is juggling? Juggle is a verb and it is defined as to continuously toss into the air and catch (a number of objects) so as to keep at least one in the air while handling the others, typically for the entertainment of others. Though it also bears mentioning that what we will be discussing in this episode is more specifically referred to as toss juggling. Bounce juggling and contact juggling also exist as distinct disciplines. Moving forward I'll be using the general term juggling, but know that we are discussing toss juggling. The classic tool for juggling is, obviously, balls but you can juggle anything that you can throw. I've seen people juggle knives, flaming torches, chainsaws, music stands, bowling balls. Anything you can throw. Although, the three most basic juggling props are balls, clubs, and rings. The oldest archeological depiction that we have of juggling comes from ancient Egypt from around the 21st century BCE. There was some wall art in the Beni Hasan cemetery complex that appears to show 4 young women juggling balls. We say appears to be because without text based evidence describing the scene or the ability to talk to someone who made the art it's just a guess. But you can look up the wall art, and it looks like juggling to me. The next big piece of juggling in the historical record comes from the Spring and Autumn period of Chinese history and it is not only my favorite story from the history of juggling, but it is also one of my favorite historical stories to exist, full stop. Xiong Yiliao was a Chu warrior who fought under King Zhuang of Chu during the Spring and Autumn period of Chinese history. Ancient Chinese annals state that he practiced nòngwán, "throwing multiple objects up and down without dropping". During a battle in about 603 BC between the states of Chu and Song, Xiong Yiliao stepped out between the armies and juggled nine balls, which so amazed the Song troops that all five hundred of them turned and fled, allowing the Chu army to win a complete victory. Dude just walked in between two armies about to fight and pulled one of the biggest bluffs since the Empty Fort Strategy. But also, NINE BALLS!??!?! That's amazingly impressive. The world record for most balls juggled at a single time TODAY is only 11. The record was set by Alex Barron on the 3rd of April, 2012. Juggling 9 balls is still considered a massive achievement. I've never really been able to progress beyond 3. There's another story from the Spring and Autumn period of a man named Lanzi who was known to walk around on stilts that were “twice as long as his body” while juggling 7 jian swords. Let's put aside, for a moment, that jian swords are not weighted even remotely close to how modern juggling clubs or knives are and that they are far longer. The current record for most clubs juggled is only 8. It was set in 2023 by Moritz Rosner who managed a bare 18 tosses and catches before losing the pattern. Lanzi, by the way, was probably not the guy's actual name. Lanzi was often used as a general term for itinerant entertainers during this time. The Ancient Greek historian Manetho once described jugglers and acrobats thusly: “birds of the country, the foulest brood of the city.” Male and female jugglers jumped forward and backward over swords or tables; girls threw up and caught again a number of balls or hoops to the accompaniment of a musical instrument; others displayed an astounding skill with their feet and toes while standing on their hands. And the Greek historian Xenophon once had this to say about the performance of a dancing girl at a party hosted by Socrates: And at the instant her fellow with the flute commenced a tune to keep her company, whilst someone posted at her side kept handing her the hoops till she had twelve in all. With these in her hands she fell to dancing, and the while she danced she flung the hoops into the air - overhead she sent them twirling - judging the height they must be thrown to catch them as they fell in perfect time. The record for ring juggling, by the way, is only 13 rings and was set in 2002 by Albert Lucas who managed exactly 13 throws and catches. Now, many of these ancient historians were known to exaggerate, so it's unclear if these historic records are real, or if they were just picking numbers they assumed were impressive. If the former, it's wild that the records have increased by so little. If the latter, they were correct. Ancient Roman sources make mention of jugglers and juggling fairly frequently. They mention contact juggling with glass spheres a number of times and Sidonius Apollinaris, a Roman officer leading a legion in the French province of Niemen, allegedly wrote in his letters that he enjoyed juggling three or four balls as a hobby for his own satisfaction and to entertain his companions in the legions. The Boke of Saint Albans, published in England in 1486, contains one of my very favorite juggling fun facts. It mentions a “Neverthriving of Jugglers” as part of a list of collective nouns. This is hilarious and painful and it is nearly impossible to make a thriving wage as a juggler. Stewart Culin in Games of the North American Indians, a book that was written in 2012 lists examples of juggling among the Naskapi, Eskimo, Achomawi, Bannock, Shoshone, Ute, and Zuni tribes of North America. One example, quoted from George Dorsey, describes a game played by Shoshone women who juggled up to four balls made of mud, cut gypsum, or rounded water-worn stones. Dorsey describes betting contests in which the women raced toward an objective such as a tree or tipi while juggling. This is very similar to a modern day sport called joggling where participants juggle while jogging. From 1768 onwards, when Phillip Astley opened the first modern circus he included jugglers along with his equestrian acts, acrobatics, and clowns. And in 1793 when John Bill Rickets brought the idea of the circus to the United States and performed for George Washington he juggled while on horseback. So largely from the 18th century forward juggling has been heavily associated with the circus. There have been man firsts and exciting advancements made in the field of juggling over the years. From Jim Harrigan creating the concept of comedic juggling to Dewitt Cook inventing the modern concept of club juggling when he performed a routine using Indian Clubs. Indian clubs are a heavy wooden club that was and still are used as a strengthening and conditioning tool. They are much heavier and not weighted quite the same as modern plastic clubs. There have also been more weird stories, such as Enrico Rastelli who was born in Siberia in 1896. Widely hailed as one of the greatest jugglers of all time he was the first recorded person to juggle 10 balls, though he was never able to juggle 9. There was also Charles Hoey who was the first to juggle 4 clubs, though he could not stop juggling without dropping. When performing on stage the curtain had to be closed while he was still juggling so the audience wouldn't see him drop. Juggling has a long and delightfully quirky history. It's one of my favorite party trick, though one that I don't practice as often as I used to or as often as I should. Still, it's fun to do and fun to learn about. I hope you enjoyed learning about it, because next week it's right back into the breach. That's it for this week folks. No new reviews, so let's get right into the outro. You can't talk about physical culture during the Victorian Era without discussing “Muscular Christianity.” I describe how this movement developed in the mid-19th century, ways in which it was practiced within and outside the UK, and how it intersected with phenomena that are still with us today, such as nationalism, imperialism, and eugenics. ***** References Graham, Alex. “Friedrich Ludwig Jahn & German Nationalism.” https://counter-currents.com/2017/11/friedrich-ludwig-jahn-and-german-nationalism/ Heffernan, Conor. “Indian Clubs in Victorian Britain.” https://physicalculturestudy.com/2022/01/19/indian-clubs-in-victorian-britain/ Hughes, Thomas. Paul Wolkowinski Master teacher & mentor to so many people in the Gada, (original form of the mace) Clubs & Meels community shares the history & personal journey of training. Originally he started with kettle bells & was attracted to the ballistic & circular movement of them. In 2007 Paul researched what else there was to swing. Finding a book written about Indian Clubs, which is "still my bible to this day." he decided to try it out. Having a local wood turner create clubs for him. His first time holding them he thought to himself what do I do next. Continuing on this journey, he found steel clubs but didn't like the coldness of them. As Paul continued working with clubs, Gada he realized how essential breathing patterns were. Breathing sets a rhythm. He describes the movement of Heart shape circle, what they become & the components they integrate. In 2017 Paul was diagnosed with prostate cancer. Part of his physical therapy required movement that he realized was already familiar to what he had been doing with the clubs & Gada. His recovery was expected to take 2 years but with his prior training, he was cleared at 6 months. After going for a walk & having dry heaves, he came home & picked up a Gada. Swinging for a few mins, he felt Freedom of the chemo leaving his body. He continued swinging for 40 mins! With patience & “letting his ego go” he started light & brought his movement & strength back. Paul dives into the technical contributions of the Gada. Holding it upright, dropping it over your left/right shoulder, increases the weight as it falls behind, just to name a few. He shares how you can get creative in making a Gada when first starting out. He shares the history of Gada, Clubs, Meels & the difference between countries. Training would take place post Sunday church with everyone participating, men, women & children! "You have to become intimate, get used holding the weight. The closer it is to your body, the safer it's going to be.” When Paul trains, he looks at the WHY he did move with that swing or that direction. Go ahead and channel that inner beast (oh you know it's in you!) and wake up that Primal Movement through Animal Flow - Meooooooowwwww... Do you ever watch the "Discovery" or "Science Channels" to watch wild animals in their most natural habitats? "The Lion stalks it's prey," and we watch as that lion lays low the ground, tracking in silence, with the beautiful/dangerous prowess that only the lion possesses. How about the antelope with it's beautiful, delicate gait? How about that snake that slithers in sensual motions? This is all animal flow, and children tend to move this way when at play. As we get older, we're less in-tune to "playing" in our most primal states, and this is where animal flow and functionability training, and it truly connects mind to body in tapping into ourselves. The mundane workouts can get stagnant, and so can our bodies with efficiency. If you're really in for a challenge to test flexibility, strength, movement, focus, and coordination, go ahead and harness those primal instincts. The exercises, which emulate types of animals, along with Primal Weapons Movements, make for some unique, challenging workouts. The entire practice of Animal Flow has 6 components: Wrist Mobilizations, Form Specific Stretches, Traveling Forms, Switches & Transitions, and the Flows...there is something for everyone. The primal movements include the 6 primal patterns of moving your body via a: push,, twist,, pull, gait, squat, and hinge. Besides animal flow, my guest today will also talk about the tradition Indian Clubbell Training and it's multiple benefits on the body. Personal Trainer, Chanon Finley, knows all about this type of functional and "rather sexy" method of moving our bodies. Incorporating Animal Flow, Clubbells, and Stick Mobility with more traditional disciplines into her training ensures that every workout will be challenging and interesting. Chanon finds that using non-traditional movement styles makes it easier to break out of the typical idea of fitness being solely about losing weight or looking a certain way. Instead, she helps her clients embrace their strengths and progress with a body positive attitude, which results in both a more empowering mindset and greater overall happiness.PERSONAL TRAINER CHANON FINLEY BIO:Chanon Finley cultivates a mindful approach to daily life and fitness. She believes that movement is settling, puts you in touch with your body, and teaches you to be more present. Her business model has three components: - Working with private clientele, creating all encompassing body and mind programs oriented to their specific fitness and lifestyle goals. - Teaching virtual small group classes, creating a vibrant, supportive atmosphere of friends and family who train together.- Making movement accessible for everyone on her Youtube Channel. Creating engaging, dynamic follow along workouts for all skill levels. Chanon is insatiably curious. Skydiving, flying fixed wing airplanes, motorcycles, and traveling the world; Chanon is up for anything that will challenge her body and broaden her mind. During this episode of Vital Metabolic Podcast, hosts James Wheeler and John Parker speak with Kelly Manzone, who is an expert on training with kettlebells and clubs. Kelly talks about how she incorporates movement into her training, the importance of creativity, and how to get started with circular training. Episode Highlights: What inspired you to add kettlebells into your training? Kelly was the first to bring kettlebells into the New York Sports Club she was working at. Kelly battled infectious colitis for 3 years after a severe bout of food poisoning. Kelly sees kettlebells as a way to fill in the missing gaps. Accessory training doesn’t mean you have to lose your background, whatever that may be. How do you utilize these tools with your clients? Kelly uses different tools with different clients on a case-by-case basis. John mentions that training is not just about traditional approaches, there is an art behind it. How does working on stability vs mobility look in your training? Kelly is hypermobile, so she does feel like she works more on stability. When you are training with kettlebells, what are you thinking about? When Kelly is training for herself, she does it more intuitively, but she does have days where it is really structured. Kelly also talks about how she uses kettlebells with her clients and ways to be creative. Kelly likes to work on skill-based modalities with her clients. Kelly mentions that, with skill-based modalities, clients have to be trusted to practice on their own. They can’t only practice once or twice a week. How do people get started with circular training? Remember that your body is a moving unit. People have always been moving, pulling, pressing, etc. long before it was formatted by an industry. Kelly is more active on her Instagram. Kelly feels that there is too much comparison within the industry, and that it’s completely fine for people to have different training styles. It’s important for trainers to understand their strengths/weaknesses and areas of expertise, and know when to refer to someone else. Do you have anything else to share? Where can people find you? 3 Key Points: Kelly believes that creativity is a very important part of the training process. With skill-based modalities, you have to be willing to keep working on them at home. There does not need to be so much competition in the fitness industry. Tweetable Quotes: “Movement is its own language.” -Kelly Manzone “I’ve never been able to put myself in a box and describe exactly what I am. It’s because I’m constantly curious about what’s on the other side.” -Kelly Manzone “I train a lot of type-A personalities, and I want them to tap into feeling.” -Kelly Manzone Resources Mentioned: James’ Facebook Instagram Twitter John’s Facebook Instagram Twitter Kettlebell Gains Apparel code vital20 Kelly’s Facebook Instagram Website kelly@kmmoves.com https://www.indianclubsacademy.com/

In this new episode of the BikeJames Podcast I share my thoughts on Enduro Racing and how approach training riders for it. A lot of riders are making some common mistakes with their training and my goal is to help you avoid them while knowing what you did need to focus on to be successful at Enduro Racing. Click the link at the bottom of this post to stream or download the MP3 file for this episode. Remember that you can download the BikeJames Podcast through Itunes and Podbean as well. If you are a seasoned vet looking for an edge or a new racer looking for a place to start your training journey, then this podcast will have a lot of great info for you. Enduro Racing can be a fun and rewarding part of your mountain biking experience and with the right training plan it can be even better. Until next time… Ride Strong, James Wilson MTB Strength Training Systems Show Notes: Goal with this podcast is to inspire you to take your results into your own hands. With the right approach you can make dramatic changes in your performance. Enduro Racing gets scored on the DH sections, which makes them the most important. There is no bonus for transfer times so they don’t matter. Top Enduro racers come more from a DH background than an XC background. For them Enduro Racing is slower than their normal pace and for XC it is faster. It is easier to train slower for longer than to increase your speed. Big mistake riders make is training like it is an endurance event and not emphasizing where the points are really scored, which are the shorter DH style sections. In DH your strength-to-weight ratio and your technical skills are the biggest factors. This means they should be emphasized in your training. Enduro specific fitness includes having the anaerobic engine to ride as fast as possible on the timed stages while being aerobically fit enough to ride the transfer with minimal impact on the anaerobic energy system. In the gym this includes getting stronger and more mobile to improve strength to weight ratio and movement efficiency. This includes 2-3 days of strength training and 5-7 days of mobility work (can be as little as 10 minutes a day). Right now I like to get strong with Ramping Isometrics (great for Strength to Weight Ratio) and use tools like Indian Clubs and the Steel Mace to work on movement efficiency. I’ll mix in some “traditional” movements for variety but I’ve found that using them to get “stronger” usually led to getting hurt or having my training take away from my riding. Cardio Training = Breathing/ Make sure you are training your breathing. Domino Theory - Last domino is “cardio” but first one is breathing. The best cardio training you can do is trail riding…but only if you do it right. You won’t become a better Enduro Racer in the gym or on a trainer - it will only happen on the trail. Most Enduro racers waste their most precious training time by just going for a ride and calling it training. To be training it must reflect what you are training for, which isn’t a normal trail ride. Enduro training trail rides should include 2 types: Moderate Skills Focused Rides: These rides have you focusing on riding as smoothly as possible instead of trying to go hard and fast. They are a great time to pick a specific skill and focus on it. Avoid redlining for sustained periods of time and focus instead on using as few pedal strokes as possible. Get 2-3 of these a week. Hard Race Simulation Rides: These should reflect how you race, which includes transfers with climbs followed by timed sections. On the trail you should try to mimic the length of time you would ride a transfer stage while focusing on keeping your breathing under control and not redlining, which includes walking if you need to. You should also have some sections that reflect a stage and can vary in length. Rest if you need to but focus on putting down your hardest effort for those runs. In other words, instead of just riding “hard”, have some easy and hard sections. This may include lapping the same section if that is all you have access to to train on. Do 1 of these every 7-10 days. Some easy rides or days that you work on skills drills can round out your riding. If you can’t ride and have to do some “cardio training” I would encourage you to include some “cardio strength training” like combo drills or mace flows (Upper Body Cardio/ Grip Endurance). Watch out for programs that treat you like a roadie or XC rider with lots of long, sustained effort rides. If it doesn’t seem to reflect the realities of Enduro Racing and they can’t give you a really good reason why not then odds are they are trying to fit a square peg into a round hole. Enduro Training doesn’t have to be rocket science but you do need to apply some critical thinking to it. You have what it takes to be successful already and with the right training program you can unleash that.

In this episode of the BikeJames Podcast I recap the insights and lessons I took from the recent Perform Better Functional Training Summit. It was a 3 day event in Long Beach that brought in some of the best coaches in the industry to share their knowledge. You can stream or download this episode by clicking the link below. You can also find the BikeJames Podcast on Itunes. My Big 5 Take Aways: 1 - Leverage and Torque based tension are different than Compression based tension. This is why the Mace and Indian Clubs are more effective for “real world/ farm boy” strength.2 - The Glute Bridge/ Hip Thrust deserves a spot with Squat and Hinge as lower body movement patterns that need to be trained. Ramping Iso Bridge achieves the goal of the loaded hip thrust.3 - The hips are made to create and absorb force along multiple planes and they need to be trained that way. 4 - Keto is overrated and misunderstood.5 - Functional Training needs to evolve past the current “Correctives + Kettlebells” formula. Until next time… Ride Strong, James Wilson
