Diane Coyle is the Bennett Professor of Public Policy at the University of Cambridge. She is the Research Director at the Bennett School of Public Policy. Diane's latest book is 'The Measure of Progress: Counting What Really Matters'. Her own research focuses on productivity, the digital economy and AI policy, and economic measurement. She has been writing about the effects of digital technologies since her first book, ‘The Weightless World', in 1997. Diane is currently a member of the UK Government's Industrial Strategy Council, the New Towns Taskforce, and advises the Competition and Markets Authority. She has served previously in a number of public service roles including as Vice Chair of the BBC Trust, member of the Competition Commission, and of the Natural Capital Committee. Diane was awarded a DBE in 2023 for her contribution to economics and public policy. How well does the law serve women? That's a question Nuala puts to Brenda Marjorie Hale, The Rt. Hon. The Baroness Hale of Richmond, DBE a former judge who served as the first female President of the Supreme Court. She was the first woman and the youngest person to be appointed to the Law Commission, where she led the work on what became the 1989 Children Act. In 2019 she announced the Supreme Court's judgement that the prorogation of Parliament was ‘unlawful, void and of no effect'. The relentless conflict has triggered the world's worst humanitarian crisis for 6 million displaced women and girls. Cases of conflict-related sexual violence remain hugely under-reported, but evidence points to its systematic use as a weapon of war. Yousra Elbagir, Sky News' Africa Correspondent talked to Anita about the impact on women and also the role women play in providing support to the displaced.Are you a fan of words, their meanings and origins? The lexicographer Susie Dent, best known as the queen of Dictionary Corner on C4's Countdown, has created a whole year's worth of words, most of which you most probably never knew existed, in a freshly published almanac. It is called Words for Life and each day you can read an entry, digest its meaning and maybe laugh at its sound. Many children in care, especially those with Afro-textured hair, struggle to access proper grooming and cultural hair care. Emiola explains how free hair care can help black and mixed heritage children feel valued and celebrated. What are the issues that shape the lives of teenagers today? What are their concerns, pressures and influences? For their ‘Teen25 Summit', BBC5 Live in collaboration with BBC Bitesize have conducted a survey of over 2,000 13–18-year-olds, and the data reveals some worrying statistics for the mental health of teenage girls today. Professor Dame Carol Robinson is a scientist who was the first female professor of Chemistry at both Cambridge and Oxford Universities. She has been awarded scientific prizes from all over the world for her pioneering work studying complex macromolecules using an instrument called the mass spectrometer.Carol was drawn to science as a child growing up in Folkstone where she started collecting flowers and shells before moving on to breeding mice because she was fascinated by their genetic makeup. She grew to love chemistry in particular and pored over the periodic table in her bedroom.She left school at 16 and joined Pfizer, the pharmaceutical and biomedical company, as a laboratory technician. At Pfizer she began working with the mass spectrometer which measures the mass of all the atoms in a particular sample. She studied for an ONC and HNC in Chemistry in the evenings and at weekends and later gained a PHD in Chemistry from Cambridge University.She was appointed DBE in 2013 for services to science and industry. In 2021 she founded the Kavli Institute for NanoScience Discovery, an interdisciplinary science institute dedicated to studying structures and materials at an ultra-small scale.Carol has three children from her first marriage and lives in Oxfordshire with her second husband David. Professor Dame Ijeoma Uchegbu is Professor of Pharmaceutical Nanoscience at University College London and President of Wolfson College, University of Cambridge. She has devoted her career to harnessing the potential of nanoparticles – which are less than a thousandth of the width of a human hair - to take medicines to hard-to-reach areas of the body such as the back of the eye and the brain. Using nanoparticles in this way is said to increase the efficacy of medicines and reduce side effects. Ijeoma was born in London where her parents had settled from Nigeria. At 13 she moved with her family to Nigeria where she developed an enduring love of chemistry.In 2010 she co-founded a pharmaceutical company Nanomerics with her husband. The company is currently developing eyedrops to treat blindness and a nasal spray to target pain which she hopes will go some way to addressing the opioid crisis. Earlier this year Ijeoma was appointed a DBE in the King's New Years Honours List.Ijeoma lives in Cambridge with her husband Andreas. Guest: Karen Barbour Guest Bio: With nearly 40 years of surety experience, Karen Barbour founded The Barbour Group in 2002, a nationally licensed surety agency focused on construction bonding and advocacy, with offices in Maryland and Tennessee. TBG is a certified DBE, WBE, WOSB, and WBENC firm. Her advocacy sparked in the late 1990s when achieving a Federal Acquisition Regulation change permitting annual bond forms to support five-year contracts instead of one bond for five years, giving small and minority 8(a) firms the capability of bonding such projects. Karen serves on the U.S. SBA's National SBDC Advisory Board, MAA (BWI) Small & Minority Business Advisory Council, as Vice Chair for AMAC's Government Affairs Committee, and on boards such as Women Construction Owners & Executives and Girl Scouts of Central MD for over 10 years. Karen co-founded the Alliance for Hispanic Commercial Contractors, Party For A Cure, and the National Small Business Party. She continues to manage an exclusive surety bond program with Hensel Phelps Construction Co. that to date has bonded over $170,000,000 in subcontracts with no losses. Key Points: Early Career and Challenges as a Woman Started in the insurance and surety industry in the 1980s as one of the few women in a male-dominated field. She faced pay inequality and a lack of mentorship or grooming for leadership. Despite working 80-hour weeks, she wasn't offered ownership opportunities. Founding the Barbour Group After a successful career as a bond producer, she left to start her firm in 2002. Her motivation included economic independence, work-life flexibility, and family care (as a single mom and caretaker for her father with Alzheimer's). Passion for Cold Calling Loved the challenge and directness of cold calling. Used it to differentiate herself and prove her value in a field where women were not readily accepted. Emphasized understanding of construction and surety underwriting, which made her uniquely effective. Advocacy for Minority and Women-Owned Businesses A pivotal moment came in her 20s when she unintentionally walked into a minority contractors' meeting. Shocked by the industry's bias (her company directed underwriters to flat-out decline minority applicants), she left and began actively advocating for diversity. Worked to bond minority and women-owned firms, growing underwriting from $250,000 to $2.5 million in a year without losses. Personal Motivation and Values Grew up in a polluted, working-class neighborhood in Maryland. Experienced loss and hardship early in life (lost her mother at 11). Driven by empathy, fairness, and a strong sense of justice. Discovered later in life that her biological father was a neurosurgeon, which helped her understand her innate compassion. Diversity, Inclusion, and Economic Equity Emphasizes the importance of seeing and celebrating cultural differences, not ignoring them. Believes diversity brings better business outcomes and strengthens communities. Argues that systemic exclusion limits contributions from capable individuals and that access to capital and education are key. Community and Social Impact Initiatives Founded the Alliance for Hispanic Commercial Contractors to support minority businesses with financial assistance, consulting, and sponsorships. Created Party for a Cure, a nonprofit supporting children with neurological diseases. How to measure the good life? According to Cambridge University's Professor of Public Policy, Diane Coyle, quantifying progress doesn't involve traditional economic metrics. In her new book, Measure of Progress, Coyle discusses how economic metrics like GDP, designed 80 years ago, are increasingly inadequate for measuring today's complex economy. She argues we need new approaches that account for digital transformation, supply chains, and long-term sustainability. Coyle suggests developing human-centric balance sheet measures that reflect true progress beyond simple growth numbers.
