In this episode, I invite you to experience the chilling tale of "The Birds," a haunting story originally written by Daphne du Maurier. Set against the stark backdrop of a farmhouse on the southern coast of England, the narrative unfolds during the ominous transition from autumn to winter, where the environment seems charged with an unsettling energy. As I share the tale, I'll explore the deep themes of fear, survival, and the often-overlooked connection between humans and nature. As winter's chill descends, I set the scene—crisp air, a crackling fire, and the absence of the cheerful songs of birds that once filled the landscape. The protagonist, Nat, reflects on his farm life and the peculiar behavior of the birds in autumn, which stir a sense of unease in him. There's a hint of foreboding as we delve into conversations about the restlessness of the birds—a phenomenon that hints at something darker on the horizon. The tension escalates with the sudden change in the weather, setting off a catastrophic chain of events. After a peaceful day on the farm, night brings chaos as birds begin to attack unprovoked. I paint a vivid picture of Nat's desperate fight against these feathered foes—a visceral clash where terrified family members scramble for safety, each moment charged with primal fear. Imagery of bloody conflict and the grotesque detail of bird bodies littering the floor combine to create a scene that's equally horrifying and captivating.Throughout the narration, the audience will sense Nat's increasing paranoia and isolation as he confronts not only the physical assault from the birds but also the skepticism of those around him. The dynamics within his family unfold, revealing emotional strain and a longing for connection amidst fear. I delve deep into Nat's psyche, his struggle to protect his loved ones while grappling with his own fears and doubts. The onslaught intensifies as the birds gather in numbers, creating a palpable sense of dread. As I lead listeners through these harrowing moments, you'll feel the weight of existential questions—what drives nature to turn against humanity, and what does this signify about our place in the world? With each desperate attempt to secure their home against the relentless attack, the tension escalates until it reaches a chilling climax. In a poignant conclusion, I reflect on the frailty of human existence in the face of nature's relentless forces. As the birds' motives remain shrouded in mystery, listeners are left grappling with the implications of the narrative—the fragility of safety, the unpredictability of the natural world, and the haunting isolation that ensues in crises. It's a story designed not only to thrill but also to provoke thought about our relationship with nature and the dark corners of the human experience.Join me as we explore this riveting adaptation of "The Birds," a tale that compels us to question not just our fears but also the very fabric of our reality.

On a trip to the South of France, the shy heroine of Rebecca falls in love with Maxim de Winter, a handsome widower. Although his proposal comes as a surprise, she happily agrees to marry him. But as they arrive at her husband's home, Manderley, a change comes over Maxim, and the young bride is filled with dread. Friendless in the isolated mansion, she realises that she barely knows him. In every corner of every room is the phantom of his beautiful first wife, Rebecca, and the new Mrs de Winter walks in her shadow. Not since Jane Eyre has a heroine faced such difficulty with the other woman. An international bestseller that has never gone out of print, Rebecca is the haunting story of a young girl consumed by love and the struggle to find her identity. This is going to be Sarah's first read of this novel and we're so excited to head to Manderley for an adventure into the Gothic - a foundation of dark academia. In this episode we discuss:Villains and sympathising with villainsMaxim's obsession with Mrs De Winter's youth and innocenceWe discuss the power of weather and seasons acting as a character

Daphne du Maurier was a prolific English writer of novels, plays, and short stories resonant with what she termed "a sense of unreality." In this episode, JF and Phil discuss her great short story "Don't Look Now," which Nicholas Roeg famously adapted to the screen in 1973 in a film starring Donald Sutherland and Julie Christie. Recorded live at Shannon Taggart's Lily Dale Symposium on July 25th, 2024, the discussion takes a number of turns, exploring the ghost as an "image of itself," the phenomenon of "deathishness," the experience of derealization, the human capacity to break time, and grief as a rift in time. Welcome to "Friday Night Noir" on Vintage Classic Radio. This Friday, we're excited to present a captivating episode from the "Lux Radio Theatre," featuring a radio adaptation of Daphne du Maurier's thrilling story, "The Birds." Originally broadcast on July 20, 1953, this adaptation brings to life du Maurier's tale of unexplained and violent bird attacks in a small English village, a story that taps into the deep, primal fears of nature turning against humanity. Daphne du Maurier, an English author known for her richly atmospheric work often imbued with a sense of foreboding and horror, originally published "The Birds" in her 1952 collection called "The Apple Tree." The story is best known for its 1963 film adaptation directed by Alfred Hitchcock, a critical and commercial success that deviated from the original setting and plot details but retained the core premise of menacing bird attacks. This film is considered a classic in the horror-thriller genre and remains influential. The radio adaptation itself features a talented cast who bring the chilling tale to life, including Herbert Marshall who leads with a compelling performance. The Lux Radio Theatre was renowned for adapting popular films, novels, and plays, often featuring the original stars, and this episode is a prime example of their engaging, dramatic productions. Following the 1953 radio adaptation, the story's concept continued to inspire further adaptations and reimaginations across various media, including a sequel film "The Birds II: Land's End" in 1994, which unfortunately did not replicate the success of the original. The enduring impact of "The Birds" is also evident in various television shows and literary adaptations that have echoed its themes of nature's revolt against humanity. Join us this Friday to experience a masterful radio adaptation of a story that has thrilled and terrified audiences across generations. Tune in to Vintage Classic Radio for an evening of classic storytelling with "Friday Night Noir."

he story made famous by a later Hitchcock movie. Man at war against the birds. Escape brings you Daphne Du Maurier's story The Birds adapted for radio by Robert Wright. Set in a farmhouse on the southern coast of England, the autumn countryside around is desolate and bleak. Nat notices that the birds on the coast are unusually restless and that the land and sea birds are mingling together in an unnatural partnership. That night he is woken by a tapping on the bedroom window and discovers a bird trying to get in. When he goes to shoo it away there are half a dozen of them and they seem to be attacking him pecking at his face and eyes with their sharp beaks. This is a gripping tale which was previously portrayed by Lux Radio Theater on 20th July 1953 though this version is closer to Du Maurier's 1952 novel.

Episode 48: REBECCA Last night, we dreamt we went to Manderley again . . . but we really we just watched a classic movie about it. The 1940 Alfred Hitchcock mystery Rebecca is the subject of our podcast this week. Joan Fontain plays a timid young woman who married a mysterious, wealthy widower, Maxim de Winter, played by Laurence Oliver. When she returns to his famed estate, Manderley, the newly wed must confront long-buried secrets, the memories of a dead wife, and a creepy housekeeper, Mrs. Danvers (Judith Anderson). Rebecca is based on the best-selling novel by Daphne Du Maurier. It was released in 1940 and won the top prize at the Oscars (TM) for that year. It ranks #22 on our countdown.* Come back again next week as we rumble our way into 1961's West Side Story. Spoiler Alert: We talk about the movie in its entirety, so if you haven't yet seen it, check it out. Or not. That ball is in your court. *What is this list? We explain it in more detail in our Trailer and its Description, but as a high-level answer: we aggregated several different lists that rank the ninety-four winners of the Best Picture Academy Award in a rough attempt to get a consensus. It is not intended to be rigorous or definitive. It's just a framework to guide our journey through cinema history.

For October, we discuss Gothic fiction, one of the prompts on the Books and Bites Bingo Reading Challenge. Our picks have all the creepy mansions, women in the attic, and brooding characters you could possibly want. Not to mention fungi! Carrie's PickO Caledonia is a little-known classic that, according to the publisher, “has been compared to the works of the Brontes, Edgar Allan Poe, and Edward Gorey.” This atmospheric and witty novel opens with the death of 16 year-old Janet, who has been murdered in her family's dilapidated castle in the Scottish Highlands. Except for her pet jackdaw, nobody seems to miss her much: her family wants her quickly buried and forgotten. What follows is not a traditional mystery. Instead, the book goes back in time to tell the story of her sad and misunderstood life.Pairing: Cinnamon scones from Outlander Kitchen: The Official Outlander Companion Cookbook or, for a vegan option, Buttery Scottish Teatime Scones. Jacqueline's PickHave you ever felt strongly about a house? You do not know why but for some unexplainable reason you feel a connection or a presence? In the young adult novel Frost by Marianna Baer, main character Leena has strong feelings the first time she sees an old two-story Victorian house at the edge of her boarding school. But after Leena moves into the house with her friends, things turn sinister. If you enjoyed Rebecca by Daphne Du Maurier, you might enjoy Frost.Pairing: Aztec Chile Chocolate cupcakes.Michael's PickMexican Gothic by Silvia Moreno-Garcia is like Lovecraft meets Wuthering Heights. In 1955 Mexico, young socialite Noemi is sent to High Place after her father receives a distressing letter from her cousin, Catalina. In a crumbling manor on top of a mountain, she finds Catalina confined to her room due to “tuberculosis.” While her cousin rests during the day, Noemi roams the house and grounds, where she slowly uncovers some of the family's history and dark secrets–including their strange fascination with fungi.Pairing: Garlic mushrooms.

Elizabeth generously joins Caitlin for re-record of The Birds. (I forgot to hit record last time... RIP.) Elizabeth is a Birds expert, and she's my Hitchcock Blonde. We look at themes of disaster linked to female psyche, man vs nature, and some Oedipal monstrous motherhood. We also do a deep dive into the troubling production, most of which would not fly today. Tangents include: Nick at Nite, pregnant spiders, Reese's preferences, zoos, aquariums, and hamsters.

Stories of shipwrecks, smugglers and ghosts. Built in the mid-18th century, over the years many of the Jamaica Inn's patrons have been less respectable than most. The inn has a long history of being used by smugglers to hide away contraband that was brought ashore concealed in all sorts of things - potatoes, women's stockings and even a hollowed-out turtle. It is estimated that half the brandy and a quarter of all tea being smuggled into the UK was landed along the Cornish and Devon coasts. Jamaica Inn was remote and isolated so it was the ideal stopping place on the way to Devon and beyond. The inn was made famous by Daphne Du Maurier's novel of the same name published in 1936 after she and a friend became lost in fog whilst out riding on the moors and were led back by their horses to safety at the Inn. During the time spent recovering from her ordeal, the local rector is said to have entertained her with ghost stories and tales of smuggling...Today it still operates as a hotel and museum and local historian at the Jamaica Inn Karin Beasant joins the podcast to regale us with tales of smuggling off the Cornish coast.Produced by Mariana Des Forges, edited by Dougal Patmore and readings by Lucy Davidson.Find out more information about the Jamaica Inn.If you'd like to learn more, we have hundreds of history documentaries, ad-free podcasts and audiobooks at History Hit - subscribe to History Hit today! To download the History Hit app please go to the Android or Apple store.
