Maeve, the Celtic Magdalen, Finally Comes to Call

KnotWork Storytelling

Our Story  You must meet Maeve, the Celtic Magdalen, the heroine of the four novels in Elizabeth Cunningham's The Maeve Chronicles. From her beginnings on the Celtic Island of Women Tír Na mBán, to “Druid School” on the Isle of Mona, and then on to Rome, the Galilee, southern France, and then back to Britain when Queen Boudicca of the Iceni was battling for her tribe and her sovereignty, Maeve has see it all.  Her sensibilities are both ancient and modern, and make her one of fiction's most powerful, enduring characters.  Elizabeth reads excerpts from Magdalen Rising, in which Maeve meets the Cailleach and gets her first sex-ed lesson from her warrior witch mothers and from Red Robed Priestess, the final novel in the series. Our Guest Elizabeth Cunningham is a novelist, poet, musician, and counselor based in New York's Hudson Valley.  She is the author and illustrator of The Book of Madge, a graphic novel, and the source of her best known work, The Maeve Chronicles. Her earlier novels include The Wild Mother, The Return of the Goddess, and How to Spin Gold. Her debut mystery novel Murder at the Rummage Sale and its sequel All the Perils of this Night (which can also be read as a stand-alone thriller), and most of her previous novels, will be reprinted by Monkfish Book Publishing in 2023 and 2024. Visit Elizabeth's website: https://elizabethcunninghamwrites.com/ (https://elizabethcunninghamwrites.com/) https://bookshop.org/lists/fiction-from-ireland-and-the-celtic-world (Buy The Maeve Chronicles.) Our Conversation When I picked up the first “Maeve book” over a decade ago, I felt an instant jolt of recognition. I felt the same when I met Maeve's creator, Elizabeth Cunningham at a writing workshop a few years later. Since then, Elizabeth has become a mentor and guide to me, helping me birth my own book (and all of my creative endeavors!) In our chat, we explore: * “Sovereignty, Maeve, belonging to yourself. Your own terms. Sovereignty is your birthright and your inheritance.” * “A story is true as long as it's well told”:  the power of contemporary fiction to shape the imaginal realm. * How Maeve's story fits other beliefs about Mary Magdalene as disciple or as keeper of the divine blood line. * Maeve's origin story and how she was born of the need for a “human goddess”  * The romanticization of Celtic culture and Elizabeth's reservations about writing about the Celts once she learned of their brutality and penchant for head hunting * Representations of different kinds of sovereignty in women: as lover, healer, mother, disciple, brothel owner * Sex work, prostitution, and priestesshood * Maeve's first experience as a healer: a companion's botched abortion * What it's like to create a character who walks with you for more than 30 years: Elizabeth calls Maeve her Best Imaginary Friend Forever Our Music Music at the start of the show is by Beth Sweeney and Billy Hardy, a Celtic Fiddle and multi-instrumental duo based on Cape Cod, Massachusetts. The traditional Irish reel we play at the start of the show is called "The College Groves." https://www.knotworkstorytelling.com/episode/billyandbeth.com (billyandbeth.com) Join Us in the Heroine's KnotThe Heroines' Knot is an online community for creative creatures on the quest for self-expression & collective renewal. https://my.captivate.fm/www.marisagoudy.com/heroines-knot (Learn more and join us.) 1:1 Coaching Opportunities Marisa offers 1:1 coaching for Personal and Professional growth with her https://www.marisagoudy.com/healing-for-heroines (Healing for Heroines) packages. The festival opens with a meet-and-greet reception for filmmakers, council members, and filmgoers, beginning Saturday, at 5 pm with fine food and drink served at the Manor House Restaurant. After the reception, the celebration will move across the street to the Lynwood Theater. Saturday night's headliner will be Steve Stolee's tour de force documentary, One Man's Treasure, about the Bainbridge Island Rotary Auction and Rummage Sale that began as a small-town fundraiser to build a library and has grown to gigantic proportions and international attention. An engaging short comedy, The United Guys Network, from Vancouver filmmaker, Tabatha Galat, will close out the evening. Sunday, at 9:00 a.m., another exciting day of movies begins with a rich variety of offerings, including a very surprising “sneak” documentary and a who-done it involving a prodigal sister, the practice of Yoga, and a painting by Salvador Dali. Film fans will not want to miss this exciting weekend of documentaries and drama, comedy and mystery, and a sneak-peek about a very unlikely relationship. Full passes and single movie tickets are available, and can be purchased by going to the Arts and Humanities Bainbridge website: www.ahbainbridge.org. Bainbridge Island is a community that loves its library, and library users have a treat in store when this year's "Refresh" project expands the library's meeting room and improves its facilities -- in keeping with their slogan "A vibrant space for everyone". In this 16-minute podcast conversation, Bainbridge Branch Manager Rebecca Judd and Bainbridge Public Library board president Eric Petersen describe how excited they are about the improvements that will be constructed this year, between March and this Fall. The Library will remain open throughout the construction project. Some services will move around the building as the project proceeds. To keep up with the changes, check the Bainbridge Library website and the KRL Bainbridge branch website that describes library services and events. They explain our Library's innovative working relationship -- a public-private partnership -- between the Kitsap Regional Library system for staffing and services that we support through local tax levies, and the private nonprofit Bainbridge Public Library that thrives on local donations for the ownership, maintenance and operation of our library building. Eric describes the funding of this $1.2 million improvement -- with about $1 million coming from contributed dollars accumulated over the years in the Library's reserves, plus $100,000 coming from a major Bainbridge Rotary Club donation from proceeds of the annual Rummage Sale. It was the first Rotary rummage sale almost 60 years ago that produced the funds to initially build the Library. Other large funding sources include Friends of the Library Book Sales, and grants from Bainbridge Community Foundation and Kitsap Community Foundation. Dollars from local citizens in the One Call for All red envelope campaigns are also vital for annual building operations. Pacific Heights Construction (PHC), which built the LEED energy award-winning Art Museum and the green-built Grow Community, won the construction contract. In this 18-minute podcast, we meet the enthusiastic and convivial executive director of the Children's Discovery Museum of Bainbridge, Susie Burdick, who this week starts her one-year term as President of Rotary of Bainbridge Island. Susie brings decades of experience leading nonprofits in theater, culture, and human services. And she's obviously inspired to take the helm of the local Rotary chapter, which has a well-deserved reputation as a very active local service organization that supports so many good causes -- both locally and internationally. Susie starts by sharing the excitement and inspiration she gained by attending an annual gathering of Rotarians last month, where about 45,000 people from over 180 countries gathered in Seoul, Korea. She explains how that experience has uplifted her vision of what's possible, and how an organization can do so much to make the world a better place. Susie also announces the exciting news that the Rotary's remarkable annual fundraising event -- the Auction and Rummage Sale that took place on July 2nd -- set a new fundraising record. All of the net proceeds of the big one-day sale will support community nonprofits, plus beneficial local programs and international humanitarian causes. This was the third successive auction chaired by Tom McCloskey, who was named the Bainbridge Citizen of the Year by the Chamber of Commerce. Later in this conversation, Susie talks about what she's learned from her years of leading the Children's Discovery Museum ("Kidimu"). She also shares a personal love story about what brought her to Bainbridge in the first place. Throughout this conversation, Susie offers touching insights about the workings of organizations that are out to make the world a better place. Some traditions define a community. For our island, the combination of the Rotary Club's annual Auction and Rummage Sale, and the Grand Old Fourth of July parade and celebration, are two unique and defining events. And this year they coincide in the same long weekend -- on Saturday July 2nd and Monday July 4th. In this podcast, we learn about the remarkable uniqueness of our island's Rotary Club Auction and Rummage Sale from Tom McCloskey, who is in his third year of chairing the annual auction and loves what this charitable event does for the community. In this 15-minute conversation, Tom takes us behind the scenes and explains the many ways this remarkably large and much-loved event benefits the community and charitable causes. Tom points out that all of the net revenues from the annual Rotary auction and sale benefits the community -- through the Rotary's annual community grants to local nonprofits, the funding of large community projects, more than a dozen scholarships for local graduates, and multiple international projects. None of the proceeds are used for the Rotary Club's own operating budget. In the podcast, Tom gives us the run-down on this year's dates: Friday June 24 to Wednesday June 29th (8am-8pm): drop-off your donated household or business that are underutilized with the curb-line volunteers at Woodward School; Friday July 1st (5pm-8pm): scout out the items you need on Preview Night at Woodward Saturday July 2nd (8am-2pm): Auction and Rummage Sale, at Woodward School. Hear from Tom all about the makings of an event that attracts over 5,000 shoppers and is staffed by 120 Rotary members and 1,400 community-wide volunteers. And learn additional details - including what can and can't be accepted for donation, and the availability of pickup at home for those with special needs - on the Rotary Auction web site.
