Season 5, Episode 234 The Evolution of Cool: What We Loved Then and What's Trending Now Nostalgia always finds a way to trend. From bumpin' bass in your trunk to custom AI avatars flooding your feed—what's cool evolves, but the vibe stays the same. Let's take a ride through the decades and catch up on what's hot, what's history, and what's happening right now in pop culture, rodeo, and the wildest wildlife headline you didn't know you needed. From Fax Machines to 3D Cartoon Avatars Then: Remember the days of waiting in line at the office fax machine, praying it didn't jam? Or spending hours crafting a MySpace page with custom HTML? Now: We've moved on to creating 3D cartoon versions of ourselves using AI and ChatGPT to share on TikTok, Instagram, and Snapchat. It's not just for kicks—these avatars are now brand mascots, profile pics, and conversation starters. 25 Years Ago: CD Players & Subs in the Trunk In the late '90s and early 2000s, if your ride didn't have a Pioneer deck and a couple of 12-inch subs in the back, were you even cool? Authorities uncovered a treasure trove of over 300 protected species, including eagles and falcons. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service called it "an unprecedented display of arrogance and disregard for federal law." Busted: $900,000 Fine in Largest Taxidermy Bird Sting in U.S. History According to OutdoorLife.com; A Georgia man has been fined a whopping $900,000 in what authorities are calling the largest taxidermy bird bust in U.S. history. Dr. John Waldrop of Cataula, Georgia, was sentenced this week for illegally trafficking thousands of rare and endangered bird mounts and eggs from around the world — including some species possibly extinct. Federal agents say Waldrop smuggled over 1,400 bird mounts and nearly 2,600 eggs between 2016 and 2020, using fake shipping info and even recruiting his farm's caretaker to help hide the shipments. His massive collection included protected eagles, rare parrots, and songbird eggs — many of which didn't have the permits required by law. Some of the birds and eggs were from species so rare, no U.S. museum has them, including three eggs from an Asian shorebird with only around 1,000 left in the wild. Officials say Waldrop created demand that fueled illegal poaching across Africa, Asia, and South America. Waldrop pled guilty, was fined $900,000 and will serve three years of probation. His caretaker got six months. Authorities say the case shows just how seriously wildlife trafficking is being taken — and how much it can cost when the law is broken. When you receive a fibromyalgia diagnosis, it's natural to wonder if things will ever get better. With the lack of fibro education in medical schools, many of us received our diagnosis alongside a statement that we “just have to learn to live with it”. With such a bleak prognosis, the road ahead becomes much more difficult than it needs to be. The good news is, we can all feel better. A fulfilling life with fibromyalgia is possible, and recognizing that makes a significant difference. Far from the doom and gloom statements many of us have encountered, there's so much you can learn and do to improve your fibromyalgia symptoms. Even if you think you've tried it all, there's always something else to try. Today, Tami is joined by fibromyalgia educators and advocates, Dr. Ginevra Liptan and Sharon Waldrop. If you have ever felt alone in your fibromyalgia or frustrated at the lack of awareness and resources, this episode is for you. Note: This episode is not meant to be medical advice. Don't forget to take of yourself. We as women, take care of everyone else first. Kids, family, jobs and put ourselves last. Pay attention to your body. Feed your soul with what makes you happy. Make sure to give love to yourself tooI am very familiar with the whole medical process, so I kind knew what to expect. I don't like needles so have learned a few tricks along the way (like hold your breath and plug your nose to avoid tasting the saline when your port gets flushed). In their longest and most ambitious track to date, “The Oak,” Graham and The Band Upstairs take listeners on a sprawling sonic journey that encapsulates everything great about Americana music. At 7 minutes and 48 seconds, the Atlanta-based band, led by singer-songwriter Graham Waldrop, weaves a tapestry of introspective storytelling, lush instrumental layers, and a sense of timelessness. It's a deeply personal song for Waldrop, but like any great folk narrative, it's left open for interpretation, inviting listeners to find their own meaning in its winding lyrics and meditative mood. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/wewriteaboutmusic/support

"What overtly having categories does dramaturgy of CATS itself is that there is a particular outcome of winner or loser that happens at the end of every song." This bonus episode features the creative team of the Perelman Performing Arts Center reimagined production of CATS set in a ballroom which is appropriately titled: "CATS: The Jellicle Ball". Like me, many of you have been obsessing over this new production. I originally spoke with one of the directors Bill Rauch in July of 2022 when I first got wind of this potential new production which was just a reading at the time and the PAC wasn't even open yet. Nearly 2 years later, I'm joined by directors Zhailon Levingston and Bill Rauch as well as music supervisor William Waldrop to discuss what you can expect from this new production. We recorded this episode two days before the team started rehearsals and discussed how this incredible production is being brought to life. This is an episode you won't want to miss. “The victory's already yours, you just have to show up.” - Jon Waldrop This Real Talk is packed with wisdom on perseverance, leaning on your Higher Power and community, and how gratitude paves the way for life-changing opportunities. I had the privilege of chatting with my close friend and incredible trailblazer, Jon Waldrop. Jon is a Managing Partner at Kasowitz Benson Torres LLP in Silicon Valley. He is a highly respected and recognized patent and trademark litigation lawyer, representing industry-leading companies such as Google, Uber, and Cox Communications. Here are key highlights from this episode: Early aspirations and change of course: Jon initially sought to become an engineer. However, influenced by the people he admired and the profound role his family's preaching heritage played in shaping his communication skills, he was drawn to law. Journey to law and belief in a bigger purpose: Jon shares his belief in God and the importance of trusting one's intuition. He reflects on his journey to becoming a lawyer, stressing the importance of recognizing signals from your Higher Power and trusting in the plan laid out for you. Power of faith, meditation, and positive influence: Jon credits his success to the vital lessons his parents taught him, unwavering support from other key figures in his life, and his deep faith. He discusses the power of prayer, meditation, and the influence of positive people around him. Overcoming challenges and embracing authenticity: from being a child of divorce and experiencing the effects of racism growing up in Alabama, to dealing with imposter syndrome at Harvard, Jon opens up about his struggles. He explains how overcoming these adversities shaped his beliefs about perseverance, authenticity, and self-belief. Reframing failures and embracing full commitment: after a series of attempts to control his life direction, Jon decided to fully commit to his role as a lawyer. He discusses how this complete dedication led to professional success and personal fulfillment. Technology is in a constant state of change, especially with new innovations in healthcare happening every day. But it's not always easy to know what's out there, or to get your product to market. In today's connected world, it has become more important than ever to have a community that you can chat with, learn from, and bounce ideas off of. Networking is in. But how do networking events in healthcare bring value to the industry? On the latest episode of I Don't Care with Host Kevin Stevenson, guest Hays Waldrop, Founder and President of the Institute of Healthcare Executives and Suppliers, discusses the foundation of IHES and the importance of networking in the healthcare field. Waldrop's ‘Aha!' moment came when he was working with a start-up in healthcare that had a product catered towards those with learning disabilities. While the doctors and healthcare professionals loved the product, so too, did schools. So when he saw the superintendents and leaders of school districts gathered to network and chat about different products, he had a realization: why wasn't this happening in healthcare? So, over the course of 20 years, Waldrop networked to form a conglomerate of healthcare professionals. “We've got a CEO group, I've got a supply-chain group, and also a pharmacy group, and so we come together and it's a live-event business and we connect providers and suppliers in this environment.”The two also discussed…1) The different events IHES holds and how it creates a positive learning environment2) What type of sessions and networking events there are and who attends3) What the criteria are for adding in newer suppliers and start-ups“You know, if you're just the same old ‘me too' commodity, that's not real attractive necessarily, they're necessary and yeah we clearly have those…but it's always cool when you have a new technology, something different that the executives perhaps have not seen before or maybe they're doing it just differently…,” said Waldrop. Hays Waldrop has over 25 years of experience in the healthcare industry, having first started working in Territory Sales for Biomet, an orthopedic implant company. After working with a few start-ups around the dot com boom, Waldrop formed IHES, a group of three networking and learning platforms for healthcare executives and suppliers. He is a graduate of the University of Tennessee, Knoxville.

Our guest this week, Jayne Moore Waldrop traded legal briefs of a law practice for her writing journals in an MFA program. Her first book, Drowned Town, is a novel in linked stories about the families who lost their homes in the 1960s when President Kennedy announced the creation of Land Between the Lakes, a national recreation area that resulted from damning several rivers and taking land from residents through eminent domain. Jayne explores what the meaning of home becomes when one's home is now underwater. Her book was selected as one of the best southern books of 2021 by the Southern Review of Books. Jayne has changed gears once again, this time to tell a picture book story for children titled A Journey in Color: The Art of Ellis Wilson about one of the great artists of the Harlem Renaissance, native Kentuckian Ellis Wilson, who won two Guggenheim Fellowships but has been virtually unknown in his home state. Jayne teamed up with acclaimed Nashville artist Michael McBride to create a book that helps give Wilson his due but also inspire children to follow their dreams. And stay tuned to our social media accounts because we will be giving away one hardback copy of Jayne's novel Drowned Town for one lucky winner. In this story, a peasant family has a son. His mom doesn't want him to waste his life, so they take him out to get educated. Through a bit of chance, the Devil is the one to educate him, but only if the father can recognize his own son. After he does, the Devil is on the look out to get the kid back under his control.
