In this episode, Jessica makes Natasha watch Daybreak, a Netflix apocalypse show that is scary-similar to The Last Kids on Earth. (We're talking the same zombie-survival town map, the same gathering our friends vibe, and the same monsters and zombies in one apocalypse theme.) Listen as we discuss Sam Dean the Supernatural-themed John Green protagonist, our flashback king Josh, and Angelica the bomb girl. Natasha comes up with some wild fanfic that I personally vote we force them to write, as it would be a very fun apocalypse story to read. And then I try to come up with any answers at all for our usual questions given that I remember extremely little about this show. Will Natasha survive the apocalypse? It wouldn't be an episode of epiphanies if we didn't have at least one queer ship that never happens to gush over and boy do we. Dive in with us as we "spoil" this show (there's not much to spoil, it is just a sitcom in the best of ways), reveal our opposing opinions on what makes an episode the best episode of a show, and basically plot out the next two to three seasons of this show for Netflix. That's right, Netflix, if you're reading this, we've got these seasons written and ready to go for you. Just send a cheque our way and the deal is done. You don't need to listen to the episode though. Just trust us. We did a good job. We definitely didn't make everyone in the show queer and throw away the whole over-arcing plot of this season in favour of our queer revival. We would never do such a thing, Netflix. We are good and trustworthy people who do not only watch shows and conduct hostile takeovers of them to make everyone queer. That would be insane. This week on Episode Epiphanies, Natasha makes Jessica watch Cowboy Bebop, a noir-style anime that... well, it's a noir. That's it. That's the show. That's this episode. It's a noir. We discuss how much Jessica dislikes noirs, how they are definitely not cowboys, and then we probably spend way too long mourning when cigarettes were cool. There is just no inanimate object that can equal cigarettes in symbolic weight. If you've got an alternate, please let us know. Because we are struggling writers that need to understand how to create homoerotic tension without cigarette sharing. Cigarette sharing is where it's at. But if you don't want to talk about how much we miss the ideal of cigarettes as the ultimate symbol of being Cool & Sexy, we also discuss the typical problems of 90s animation and the fact that Spike almost certainly has sex in this show. Our discussion leads to the differences between losing actors in live-action versus in cartoons and how Ally McBeal and Crazy Ex-Girlfriend actually share a lot of similarities. At the last second, it's revealed that Ally McBeal is the source of the famous dancing baby meme and we blow Natasha's mind. Will the famous baby be enough to keep Natasha onboard? All of that probably sounds great and philosophical. But that's not us. Really, we're here because Wei Wuxian is hot. He's really evil and he's really stupid and he doesn't want to admit he's evil but, you know, he's hot. And isn't that what television is really about? Being horny for cartoon characters? Jessica does her best to convince Natasha that the Point of this show is to Hate Everyone, be Confused by the Tone, and be on No One's Side. You can all guess how those arguments go. We also answer the important questions, such as whether Beck is actively trying to have no passwords on her devices? How many people can you really lock in a glass cage and subsequently kill before it gets cliche? And, of course, why is everyone trying to fuck Joe? We ask questions like: Is it possible to be a dragon-human hybrid in this world? Does the king know how obvious it is that he's sleeping with the High Mage? Is dark magic really all the bad if it looks cool and also gives you an evil elf lover who lives inside your mirror? We mainly focus on that last question, to be honest. This episode is full of shocking revelations such as learning that this show is not about Adults Being Adults but about young adults screwing up a lot and revealing that the archetypes the characters embody in the pilot do not match up with the general pop culture idea of who they are. (Like? Joey's hot? Joey??? Yeah. He is. Fight me.) We have a great time chatting about how this, admittedly old, show has aged, whether or not Ross is a bad person, and how the queer representation in this show has its ups and downs. (Patterson's dad is canonically Bill Nye. He is not played by Bill Nye. He is, in fact, Bill Nye.) Our inability to like Kurt, understand the plot, or stop calling one of the characters by the name of a Survivor player is probably quite confusing, but we like to think it's endearing and entertaining. Will Kurt ever stop being a tired cop stereotype? Is the throuple the finale promised really canon? How does a drug that wipes your memory slowly work its way up your brain stem in an attempt to make you forget how to breathe?
