“There's nothing wrong with Ellen. It's just that she loves too much.” We watched “Leave Her to Heaven” with our friend Emily Ollero Jones from the podcast “Female Driven,” and we're still trying to figure out a way to get Gene Tierney that Oscar. This Technicolor psychological thriller really has everything: melodrama, film noir, allusions to Greek mythology, and most importantly… that face! Not a soul can clock. Gene Tierney is really serving it up throughout this movie, and we just have one thing to say - congratulations on that face. Gene's femme fatale portrayal of Ellen sets the standard for Black Widows for years to come. Let's face it - Ellen Berent Harland threw herself down the stairs so Amy Dunne could, well… “Gone Girl” herself. So many “women's pictures” owe a great debt to “Leave Her to Heaven.” Would we have Divine's impeccably decorated Baltimore home in “Polyester” without it? Fred Downie, the elderly man who'd moved to Southern California to live out the rest of his years under the care of Helen Golay and Olga Rutterschmidt, had died under mysterious circumstances. Even so, his death was ruled an accident and there was nothing to stop a man from giving his fortune away. Although Fred's case was off the table, in March 2008, the Black Widows were going on trial for the murders of Paul Vados and Kenneth McDavid. Prosecutors felt fairly confident in their case. After all, they'd linked Helen and Olga to the crimes in more than one way. Though, their case was largely built on circumstantial evidence. Confident or not, the state likely didn't see the defense's strategy coming. Helen's attorney was about to tell the jury who REALLY killed Kenneth McDavid, and it wasn't going to be Helen or Olga. Let's just say it was Helen-adjacent. Following their 2006 arrest for mail and wire fraud, the LAPD and the FBI continued trying to build a murder case against Helen Golay and Olga Rutterschmidt. They'd found some evidence during raids on the women's homes, but everything collected up until that point still wasn't enough to build a murder case. The FBI continued trying to find anything to tie Helen and Olga to Paul Vados's and Kenneth McDavid's death. Soon, investigators pieced things together and found themselves in a position to charge the women with murder. It all came down to rubber stamps, a Post-it note, and evidence found on the undercarriage of the Mercury Sable seen in the surveillance footage on the day Kenneth McDavid was killed. The Black Widows were headed for trial, and spectators were in for a wild ride. Poison artisans Giulia Tofana and Gironima Spana took all the power held hostage in their time by men and placed it in the hands of women. Join us as we go deep into the rise and fall of the world's most infamous poison and sought after skin care line: Aqua Tofana. Last week we told Guilia's story and this week we tell Gironima's. Gironima Spana was a savvy business woman who took the recipe for Aqua Tofana and created an empire run by women for women. Empires however, have a tendency to fall. In its own time the Spana Prosecution as it came to be known was a sensational, news worthy event, but after the pope locked away all the documents from the trial, the true story of the women poisoners of Rome disappeared and all that remained was a half baked legend. Thankfully the documents resurfaced over 200 years later and they revealed a nuanced, intelligent and incredibly dramatic tale that we cannot wait to share with you. David Bowie once described aging as “an extraordinary process by which you become the person you have always been.” We want to think of this as a nice sentiment, right? In this extra spooky episode, Kelley and Emily explore the stories of women who decided to be on the darker side of herstory. First, Kelley covers Maria Swanenburg, a serial poisoner and perhaps one of the most prolific female serial killers of all time- too bad we don't know much about her. Then, Emily returns to her home state of Illinois to tell the story of Polish immigrant, Tillie Klimek who had eerily accurate prophetic dreams of her husbands dying- but was she a psychic or a calculated killer? Get ready spooky bitches, because it's time to wine about herstory!Support the show
On Monday August 21'st 2005, two Onodoga County NY police officers respondrd to a 911 call from a woman named Stacey Castor. Stacey presented an unusual story about her husband locking himself in their bedroom and refusing to come out. When police kicked down the door and made their way into said bedroom, they discovered David Castor, facedown on a filthy mattress, completely naked, dead. A glass of bright green antifreeze sat on his bedside table. It seemed pretty obvious to everyone what had happened. David completed suicide, leaving his devastated wife and their blended family of three behind. Something just wasn't right about this crime scene though, and it would take 3 years for officers to find out exactly what it was. In this episode we explore the slow and painful process of antifreeze poisoning, naked suicide and why it's a red flag, Black Widows of all kinds, and the story of a woman who seemed to have everything but chose to destroy it all.... twice.
