Helen Golay and Olga Rutterschmidt looked more like retirees than ruthless killers, but prosecutors said the two women spent years building an elaborate life insurance murder scheme in Los Angeles. Their victims, Paul Vados and Kenneth McDavid, were vulnerable men living on the margins when Golay and Rutterschmidt entered their lives with offers of food, housing, and help. Now, today we are going to talk about a place most folks in Pickens County avoid like the plague: the crawlspace. Let's be honest. Unless your water heater acts up or you need to shut off a water valve, you probably don't spend a whole lot of time thinking about that dark, damp area under your floorboards. But just because it’s out of sight doesn’t mean it should be out of mind. Up here in the North Georgia hills, our red clay holds a mountain of moisture, and that dark, humid underbelly of your house is absolute prime real estate for some of the nastiest critters in Georgia. I've been shimmying on my belly through the dirt under Jasper homes for decades, and let me tell you, I've seen it all. If you were to grab a flashlight and pop your head down there today, here are the most common bugs you’re likely to find hiding out. 1. Subterranean Termites (The Silent Destroyers) These are the kings of the crawlspace, and they cause more damage to Georgia homes than fires and storms combined. Because they have soft bodies, they can’t handle the open air—they need constant moisture to survive. They tunnel up through our red dirt and build those little pencil-sized mud tubes right up your concrete blocks to reach your wooden floor joists. Once they’re in, they eat your home’s structural framing from the inside out, completely silent and completely hidden. 2. Camel Crickets (The Creepy Jumpers) Folks around here call them “cave crickets” or “sprickets” because they look like a cross between a cricket and a spider. They love dark, damp, undisturbed places. They don’t chirp, but they have one incredibly unnerving habit: when they get startled by a flashlight, their defense mechanism is to jump directly at you. If you have a damp crawlspace, you can easily have hundreds of these leggy critters hanging upside down from your subfloor. 3. Wolf Spiders and Black Widows (The Hunters) Where there are crickets and small bugs, the predators will follow. Crawlspaces are a haven for spiders. The big, furry Wolf Spiders don’t spin webs; they run across the dirt floors hunting down their prey. They're harmless enough, but they’ll give you a heart attack if you aren’t expecting them. The ones you really have to watch out for are Black Widows. They love the quiet corners of a crawlspace, particularly near the access door or vents, where they build messy, tangled webs to catch unsuspecting insects. 4. “Waterbugs” (Oriental and Smokeybrown Cockroaches) Around here, folks love to politely call them “waterbugs,” but let’s call a spade a spade—they’re giant cockroaches. Unlike the little German roaches you find in kitchens, these big boys prefer high-humidity environments with plenty of decaying organic matter. A damp crawlspace is their paradise. The trouble is, when the crawlspace gets too crowded or the weather turns dry, they follow the pipe cutouts straight up into your bathrooms and kitchen sinks. 5. Powderpost Beetles (The Wood Borers) If you look up at your floor joists and notice tiny, perfectly round holes—about the size of a pinhead—accompanied by a fine, powdery sawdust, you’re looking at the work of powderpost beetles. Their larvae live inside the damp wood under your house, slowly chewing through it over a period of years until the wood loses all its structural integrity and turns to dust. Natasha discovers that every Widow is biologically unable to harm Dreykov because of a pheromone lock, so she deliberately breaks her own nose to sever her sense of smell and overcome the conditioning. Dreykov attempts to escape while the remaining Widows attack Natasha, but Yelena releases the antidote gas, freeing them from Dreykov's control. Natasha copies the locations of Widows stationed around the world from Dreykov's computer as the damaged facility begins to collapse. She rescues the remaining antidote vials and frees Taskmaster. Natasha gives the viral and the locations of the remaining widows to Yelena so she can rescue the others.  Natasha goes to free the imprisoned Avengers. Fred Downie, the elderly man who'd moved to Southern California to live out the rest of his years under the care of Helen Golay and Olga Rutterschmidt, had died under mysterious circumstances. Even so, his death was ruled an accident and there was nothing to stop a man from giving his fortune away. Although Fred's case was off the table, in March 2008, the Black Widows were going on trial for the murders of Paul Vados and Kenneth McDavid. Prosecutors felt fairly confident in their case. After all, they'd linked Helen and Olga to the crimes in more than one way. Though, their case was largely built on circumstantial evidence. Confident or not, the state likely didn't see the defense's strategy coming. Helen's attorney was about to tell the jury who REALLY killed Kenneth McDavid, and it wasn't going to be Helen or Olga. Following their 2006 arrest for mail and wire fraud, the LAPD and the FBI continued trying to build a murder case against Helen Golay and Olga Rutterschmidt. They'd found some evidence during raids on the women's homes, but everything collected up until that point still wasn't enough to build a murder case. The FBI continued trying to find anything to tie Helen and Olga to Paul Vados's and Kenneth McDavid's death. Soon, investigators pieced things together and found themselves in a position to charge the women with murder. It all came down to rubber stamps, a Post-it note, and evidence found on the undercarriage of the Mercury Sable seen in the surveillance footage on the day Kenneth McDavid was killed. The Black Widows were headed for trial, and spectators were in for a wild ride. Life in 1800's Liverpool, England was rough. It was a port city with a high population of hard-working immigrants all trying to make ends meet. However, some were more desperate than others to ensure their living was made. Catherine and Margaret Flannagn, two Irish sisters who owned a boarding house, found themselves in the middle of a dark network of women who took advantage of insurance organizations after the death of a loved one. This network, which became known as the “Black Widows of Liverpool”, discovered the quickest way to a paycheck was with some arsenic and a compromised conscious. On Monday August 21'st 2005, two Onodoga County NY police officers respondrd to a 911 call from a woman named Stacey Castor. Stacey presented an unusual story about her husband locking himself in their bedroom and refusing to come out. When police kicked down the door and made their way into said bedroom, they discovered David Castor, facedown on a filthy mattress, completely naked, dead. A glass of bright green antifreeze sat on his bedside table. It seemed pretty obvious to everyone what had happened. David completed suicide, leaving his devastated wife and their blended family of three behind.
