I am honored to have the amazingly talented Producer/Songwriter/DJ @venessamichaels Michaels on for the first episode of 2023! I caught up with Venessa a few weeks ago and had SO much fun chatting with her. We were vibing the entire time and the conversation was truly A1. In 217 we discussed: -Journey Into Music: Venessa and I shared stories from some of our first DJ gigs and discussed how crazy of journey it's been as a DJ. Her mom actually pushed her to start DJing and she quickly realized that this is exactly what she was born to do after her first gig. She continued to build her name on the west coast and began to release music under her self-coined genre "2090". -Discography: Venessa has a DENSE discography of originals, remixes, collabs and features that is truly and unapologetically her. Her sound is so unique and fuses genres effortlessly with each production. She gave us the backstory on tracks like "Creme Brulee" with Kaleena Zanders (The GOAT), her remix of Gallant's "Weight In Gold", and how she produced the theme song for Dreamworks/Netflix show "KIPO and The Age of Wonderbeasts". She can do it all! -"Sent From Saturn": Venessa is set to release her first studio album "Sent From Saturn" later this month and recently put out the first single "Spirit of Mine" featuring Luck. We went deep on the creative process she took while creating this album and the meaning behind the project. It was truly amazing to hear her talk about how it all came together and why she chose to create an album rather than blast out singles. Can't wait to hear it! She is also a SUPER talented DJ and performer who's played at Coachella, Splash House and toured across the country for years - I'm absolutely dying to see her. There wasn't a second of silence in this interview and the energy was on fire. We laughed, we cried (kinda but not really), got real and above all had fun. linktr.ee/sherminthebooth

HEY EVERYONE! 14th Episode of Season 2. It's Pride Month in America! This will be overall a more of a lighthearted conversation with more political and societal theory tossed in the end. I was lucky enough to have some people to share pride with me this time, but if you are not as lucky as I am but you still have the ability to access LGBTQ content online, then I highly recommend engaging with as many safe spaces and content as possible, especially as positive representation can actually be comforting and healing, especially for us queer folk who often find our community and families outside of our birthplace. Recommendations I forgot to mention are "The Owl House", "She-Ra and the Princesses of Power", "Adventure Time" and "Kipo and the Age of Wonderbeasts". Feel free to search Children LGBTQ+ representation for more lighthearted, happy and friendly representation. Ooh and definitely read, " D'Vaughn and Kris Plan a Wedding". Such a good book. Thank you Hellen for the recommendation. I talk a little bit about Lesbophobia and the need for lesbian safe spaces. My tongue gets twisted as I work through my unfolding thoughts on people's reaction to gender specifically the idea of a gender trinary (and how that operates in POC cultures fairly well but could be corrupted in a capitalist western society, the way the need for women's liberation from economic oppression and abusive households was corrupted by eventually becoming tied to girl boss culture instead of the end of patriarchy and full liberation for all women, not just rich ones). Lastly, what would a genderless future look like? Hmm, share your thoughts on Twitter @YsaPlatform FUN FACT: The first Pride March was in October in South Africa and the first pride celebration took place in February in the UK. Nowadays both countries also commemorate the Stonewall Riots in addition to their original celebrations.

Chris Copeland is uniquely himself. Born and raised in Chicago, IL, Chris grew up inspired by graffiti, comics, his siblings, and was moved to tell stories with pen and ink from a young age.   Chris moved to LA in 2009 where he would break into animation as a storyboard artist at Warner Bros Animation. After years of successfully navigating around the industry and learning storytelling at various studios including Marvel, Cartoon Network and Titmouse Animation to name a few, Chris had his directorial debut on the hit Netflix show, "Kipo and The Age of Wonderbeasts" at Dreamworks. He then served as a co-showrunner with his brother Justin on Robert Kirkman's “Invincible” animated tv show for Amazon, before they both returned to Dreamworks Feature Animation as co-directors on a feature in development as well as co-supervising producers on two new TV series in development at the studio.   In this episode of Masters of Storytelling, Maya talks to Chris about the value of living authentically, why diverse teams lend to more interesting stories, and why we should all be more like peaches.     For more information about Chris Copeland and the Copeland Brothers: https://bit.ly/3uybOiM    For more information about BRC: https://bit.ly/3B4RDKB    Follow BRC on Instagram: https://bit.ly/3a9OJsu

Sydney Mikayla talks playing Trina on "General Hospital", voice acting in the Netflix show "Kipo and The Wonderbeasts", future aspirations, and a nerve-racking audition for the books!                          About Sydney Mikayla:Mikayla stars as Trina Robinson on the award-winning series General Hospital, which is currently the longest-running daytime drama in production. As part of the new generation of teens in Port Charles, Trina has formed a tight bond with Josslyn Jacks and Cameron Webber as they navigate the ups and downs of life. She is a hard-working intern who has become close with former mobster Ava Jerome (played by Daytime icon Maura West) while working at her art gallery. Loyal viewers were excited to see Marcus Taggert (played by Réal Andrews) return to the show after a long absence, and were shocked by the revelation that he is Trina’s father.                         She also is also bringing her talent to the world of voiceover. Mikayla can currently be heard in a lead role as Wolf in Kipo and the Age of Wonderbeasts, an animated series that follows a young girl who has been thrust into an adventure on the surface of a post-apocalyptic Earth. Her character is the deuteragonist who works alongside Kipo and is described as “tough-as-nails.” The cast also includes Sterling K. Brown, Dee Bradley Baker, and Deon Cole to name just a few. The show is streaming now on Netflix. Mikayla will also be recurring as Olivia on the new Nickelodeon live action puppet comedy The Barbarian and The Troll. The show follows Evan, a bridge troll in search of adventure, and Brendar, a fierce female warrior, on a quest to defeat the evil demon who has imprisoned her brother.                     Mikayla got her big break starring as Gabby Douglas in the Lifetime movie The Gabby Douglas Story. The movie chronicled the journey of Olympic gymnast Gabby Douglas, the first African American ever to be named Individual All-Around Champion in artistic gymnastics at the Olympic Games. Mikayla’s moving performance earned her a Young Artist Award for Best Performance in a TV Movie.                                                              Sydney's Social         Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/officialsydneymikayla Twitter: https://twitter.com/SydneyMikayla                                Follow the show on social media!                 Instagram: https://instagram.com/thanksforcominginpodcast/                 Twitter: https://twitter.com/tfci_podcast                  Facebook: http://facebook.com/thanksforcominginpodcast/                    Theme Music by Andrew Skrabutenas
