Hi there. This is Natasha. Jessica usually writes these descriptions, so I don't really know what I'm doing. Um... in this very special 50th episode, we watched Netflix's Pretty Smart, which is basically just what would happen if a Disney Channel original show was allowed to make dick jokes. It's also kind of like Merry Happy Whatever, which was a show that Natasha actually really liked. Will she enjoy this show, even if the premise sounds... pretty questionable? Will Jessica ever find the himbo repairman that she needs? Will any of our beloved listeners buy us a shed for Christmas after listening to this episode? These are the important questions. You would never be able to have an entire sitcom focused around a holiday like Christmas with weekly episodic television. A show celebrating the same holiday for 4 to 6 months doesn't make much sense. Fortunately, due to the Netflix format where an entire season drops at once it's a lot easier to make something like that happen. Unfortunately, the result of that is this weeks show, "Merry Happy Whatever". For whatever reason Netflix still hasn't been able to knock a sitcom out of the park. The show follows Don (Played by Dennis Quaid) The head of the Quinn household as all his children return home to follow their annual Christmas traditions. Routine becomes a little complicated when his youngest child Emily brings home her boyfriend Matt from California for the holiday. Will Merry Happy Whatever follow the same fate as the past Netflix original sitcoms S1E1 has covered or will the holiday spirt take over for the five this week? Listen as they do a deep dive review of the show's pilot episode, "Welcome, Matt" www.S1E1POD.com Starring: Dennis Quaid, Bridgit Mendler, Brent Morin, Ashley Tisdale, Siobhan Murphy, Adam Rose, Elizabeth Ho, Hayes MacArthur, Garcelle Beauvais, & Tyler Ritter

This week on Episode Epiphanies, Jessica makes Natasha watch Single Parents, a sitcom about, well... single parents. We're flipping the script today by letting Natasha hurt Jessica's feelings for a change as they drag one of Jessica's comfort comedies for having an (admittedly) messy pilot episode. We discuss the downfall of needing a pilot episode in a sitcom, playing to stereotypes to make quick connections for your audience in a short show, and if you can really make a stranger a Tinder profile in an instant (this should be a competition on a dating show tbh). Listen as Natasha defends Will as the "fun parent" and tries to understand why they like Merry Happy Whatever but find this show uncomfortable. We're all gonna sit down at Graham's juice box bar after this one and have a little drink. Adam Rose has lived the acting life in Hollywood since he was 9-years old, making his debut opposite Robin Williams and Julie Kavner in Woody Allen's Deconstructing Harry. With over 55 tinsel-town projects to date he's played roles on the sets of luminary directors and actors with credits that include The Sopranos, Veronica Mars, Netflix's Santa Clarita Diet, Supernatural, Merry Happy Whatever, and so many more. He's worked with Matthew Broderick, Matt Damon, Mark Ruffalo, and Anna Paquin, to name a few. As a writer, Adam sold his first pilot, PISSED, to Warner Bros. His short film, QUEEN, which he wrote and directed, screened at over 50 film festivals and won several awards. But back in 2009, he intuitively knew that social media would change how the world consumes content forever. At a time when most of his celebrity peers turned their noses up to anything "online," Adam began cultivating fans outside of his Hollywood projects. Today, Adam has amassed an enormous social media following, with over 3.7 million followers on TikTok and nearly half a million on Instagram, not to mention his growing YouTube. He's one of the most beloved creators with A-list brand deals, known for his viral comedy sketches, dances, and "lovely" wife, a character he plays opposite himself. In this episode, Adam and I unpack the question, "What drives the other: Does the traditional career drive a social following, or does a social following drive your traditional career?" It's an interesting debate. We dive into the story of digital identity and the famous blue cardigan that his fans are obsessed with, and how his community reacts to his content. Adam shares his content strategy, secrets to creativity, production schedule, and a typical day in his life. The whole episode is like a hug in your ear, full of warmth, comedy, and advice. *** This episode of LEAVE YOUR MARK is brought to you by Ever/Body, a New-York based cosmetic dermatology business that exists to thoughtfully support every body along their beauty journey. “What we deal more in the second season with how your online persona and your real-life persona sometimes can't help but be at odds with one another. In the first episode back we get into how women are treated, how women in relationships are treated online. In a later episode, we deal with how women are or are not allowed to express their anger online as content creators. So it's something we talked a lot about in the room. That fracturing of self, that even in a goofy show that's very lighthearted and entertaining, it's something that we do discuss and try to sneak little tidbits in there.”Ali Schouten is a showrunner, executive producer, and writer who is quickly establishing herself as a creative on the rise as her formidable talent and artistic versatility continue to make waves. “In developing Harper's character, it felt like just very realistic. We're in a major city that's very liberal, that's very creative, that this would be someone who would be a stylist, who would not necessarily need to have a coming out story because maybe they aren't from a background where… She might have come out as pansexual when she was 13. That probably didn't need to be said. Carly wouldn't be someone you needed to sit down and hold her hand and say, “I've got something to tell you.” That this is someone who would say, “Oh, cool, my roommate brought home a woman.” Or, my roommate brought home someone nonbinary. That's not something that we have to discuss. And Laci has talked a lot about how there is a place for that in a lot of shows and it's really important to have art like that, but it's also equally important to have shows where it's not this big deal coming out scene. That these are people just existing joyfully and living their lives and pursuing their dreams and relationships. That's equally valuable. I think we really felt that with the nature of the show that was the opportunity we had. It's such a joyful show that why not just show someone dating who they want to date and who they connect with.”Ali Schouten is a showrunner, executive producer, and writer who is quickly establishing herself as a creative on the rise as her formidable talent and artistic versatility continue to make waves. In this very special bonus episode, Natasha and Jessica celebrate the holidays by having an in-depth discussion about Merry Happy Whatever. I hear what you're asking: didn't they already do that last week? But last week they were only talking about the pilot. All bets are off now, because it's time to discuss an ENTIRE SHOW. This discussion covers the soullessness of Christmas movies, the ability of characters to solve their problems in record time, and a surprisingly thoughtful coming out story. Does Natasha watching this show mean that Jessica has won the podcast? Will there be more post-epiphany bonus episodes in the future? It's impossible to say, but enjoy this one just in time for the holidays! This week on Random Telly Vision, we're watching Merry Happy Whatever! The antidote to Elf and other upbeat Christmas films and tv, Merry Happy Whatever is a dark grim drama set in a department store grotto. All the staff are miserable and it shows. Not really. This is actually the comedy about a large family returning home for Christmas. We hope you enjoy our confused conversations about Merry Happy Whatever, series 1, episode 5!
In this episode, Jessica forces Natasha to watch Merry Happy Whatever, aka the merriest, happiest show on Earth. The two of them discuss Matt's shoes, Matt's hoodie, Matt's status as a "bad boy rocker boyfriend" and whether or not Matt is made of bread. If Matt is wearing it, we probably talked about it. The conversation ranges from our love of Sean Jr., our love of Kayla's fish, and our love of the cheesy holiday Disney rom-com vibe. Did I mention we love this show? Or is that a misdirect to convince all you out there who only read this text and don't listen to the episode that Natasha is full of Christmas cheer? You will have to listen to find out. (Anti-disclaimer: Last week, Daddy Dagur was not our fault. This week "Daddy Don" is entirely Natasha's fault and solely her responsibility for bringing into the world.) Stick around after the outro to hear our super-secret and important bonus discussion.
