The students who are disappearing from college campuses the fastest are those from the middle-class, not low-income, families. The share of those from the middle has fallen at four-year institutions, while the share of students from the lowest-income and wealthiest families has risen. Colleges are trying to stop the trend. In the national pursuit to create better high schools, we seldom turn to art schools for inspiration. But innovation can be found in our conservatories. That’s what I found when I spent a semester at an art school.
The urgency of protecting LGBTQ youth has now been revealed. A positive school climate boosts student achievement. It includes a system of supportive and caring teachers, a safe learning environment, student connectedness and parental involvement. Since conditions like these support the interests of a school’s major stakeholders, it is very important for them to know if they’re in a positive climate. That’s why educators need to measure school climate, according to “Research Synthesis of the Associations Between Socioeconomic Background, Inequality, School Climate, and Academic Achievement,” a new study in Review of Educational Research, a peer-reviewed journal of the American Educational Research Association.
Funding problems still plague Louisiana’s benchmark scholarship program and none of the proposed ideas are solutions. The Taylor Opportunity Program for Students (TOPS) scholarships can’t cover the nearly 51,000 students who receive some form of TOPS aid while it falls $72 million short of the $300 million it needs for full funding. The sad truth is that we will need to reduce the number of students receiving TOPS scholarships. What is unacceptable, however, is excluding low-income students from that number.
